  • The best country music artist meets the best acoustic guitar player. Cannonball Rag from Nashville, Tennessee, 6/16/07. This performance opened my ears to Tommy Emmanuel. Thank you Mr. Paisley!

    @darthfrylock To be fair, Cannonball Rag is a staple of Tommy's set, style, and practice regimen. Brad probably worked the song up just for this occasion to have the honor playing with Tommy and to showcase his incredible talents. Paisley's albums and concerts are loaded with tasty groovy licks.

      timbowabo absolutely. Paisley is as fine a telecaster player as anyone out there and he is probably better than most

      James Ryan Agree 100%. Paisley has a huge repertoire of nifty tricks he invented plus a gift for melody and timing few can match. His solos on that Telecaster can go to otherworldly planes far beyond the country genre. He even does this in his Christmas music. I rate Brad as the “Nashville cats’” counterpart to Jeff Beck. Here’s a track in which Brad is responding to famous rock riff challenges from a DJ. Eventually Brad quits fucking around and dives into Van Halen’s “Hot for Teacher”. He’ s got some chops!

    • @johnmoyle4195
      @johnmoyle4195 4 роки тому +6

      No.
      Tommy Emmanuel is a far better player, even on the Telecaster. In fact, he was barely known here in Australia until he quit The Bushwhackers in the 1980s and went solo on Telecaster.
      In the late 1990s he went back to acoustic almost exclusively and then buggered off to America because all our great music venues were booked up with DJs and most Australians fell in love with American “R&B” bullshit.
      Thanks Yanks.
      Tommy Emmanuel is far more experienced, faster and more refined as a musician and composer - his music actually has something to say other than “ever-body lookit me!”

      @@johnmoyle4195 Your loss has been the world's gain. I've been able to see Tommy 5 times, and every time he proves why he is probably the best acoustic guitar player on the planet.
      That said, why you dissing Brad Paisley? He more than held his own.
      And you know Tommy has said his brother Phil was actually the better player.

    I don't know why there are always so many haters commenting on everything. The truth is: Tommy Emmanuel is a fine human being. He has a heart filled with love, and it comes out in his playing. Nowhere will you find ANYONE who has met him saying an unkind word. Never.
    As a big surprise to me (where have I been?), Brad Paisley did a damn fine job on guitar! He was not intimidated, or didn't show it. And his playing was just great.

      Dear Mr. Walis, I appreciate your respect for all the other unnamed wonderful guitarists. I really do. That is why I NEVER say someone is the "best" at anything. I prefer to think of it as they are all great at something. Frankly, I disagree with the comparisons (who is "better") of guitarists! If I love the way someone plays, I try to just appreciate him or her, without all that comparing.

    As I browse through UA-cam watching Tommy's videos there are two things which always reach out and touch me. The first is the utter joy Tommy shows when he plays. The second is that while Tommy has the talent to play circles around just about anyone, when he shares the stage with another player, he plays with them, often taking the "secondary" role and letting them take the staring role. I have yet to see Tommy live in concert struck with how much a gentleman he seems to be.

    • @dannymay3433
      @dannymay3433 3 роки тому +2

      Tommy spent many years in the 'secondary' role with his brother Phil Emmanuel R.I.P. (search for videos of the two together...it's electrfyiing). Phil was every bit the player Tommy is but was more of a lead guitarist so that's how they played together, Tommy on rhythm, Phil on lead. Phil used to intrduce Tommy as the best rhythm guitarist in the world....and he wasn't kidding.

      Phil was as good as Tommy but his specialty was electric guitar & he was voted the worlds' fastest picker. Check Tommy & Phil playing "Nashville Express"& "Cumbanchero" & also Phil flat picking Jerry Reeds' "Lightning". Here in Australia we called Phil "The Wiz" because he was absolutely brilliant. Phil & Tommy were both self taught & neither one of them learned how to read music. The Legends from Downunder.

    This is a world class display of musicianship from both Brad and Tommy. Simply incredible. It's cool to see Brad challenged because 90% of the time he is the best guitar player on any stage he is on. You can tell he is pushing himself here to keep up with Tommy. What impresses me is how he manages to play Cannonball Rag with a flat pick, which is something even Travis didn't do. That is extremely difficult. Such a cool video!

    • @guibox3
      @guibox3 7 років тому +1

      Keep in mind that Brad 'chicken picks' with his other fingers. Tommy does the same. When they need to really flatpick, they use their thumbpick as a regular pick and alternate back and forth between their fingers and the solo pick.

    Tommy Emmanuel is absolutely one of the greatest of all time, and yet, he is one of the humblest talents as well. He genuinely loves playing with others and reveling in THEIR playing, not his own. And, as great a singer/songwriter as Brad Paisley is, he's an even greater guitar. Great show!!!

    Thing about Brad Paisley is that he was winning guitarpicking competitions when he was 12. He is, in my mind, one of the best that REAL music has to offer, whether it's country or not. And, of course, what can one say about Tommy Emmanuel, except that he's a god in the picking world and will be for many years to come. Many pickers only wish that they could do what he does, like he does it.

    I would say that I can't believe there would be any negative comments on two musicians as great as these guys but this world has proven there always will be. People wonder why music isn't what it once was, but it has never been subject to so much "know it all" criticism before. The real life of a Professional Musician is nothing like American Idol, The Voice or {fill in the blank} Has Talent. Musicians who have been around long enough to "get over themselves" awake to find themselves part of a brotherhood. Something I think many of the commenters here will never know.

    I was never quite sure if Brad would be up to the task of keeping up with Tommy on one of these blazing-fast tunes -- but my faith is restored! Killer pairing with these two! ♫♪

    I'm 55, not much gets my attention these days, BUT Brad Paisley is one of a rare breed that can sing, pick, and write good tunes, And with Tommy, well it's otherwoldly good. Brad has the sense of humor too, much like Jerry Reed, who never seemed to put enough of his guitar playing in his songs.

    I could watch Tommy even without the great guitar playing. He makes the best expressions. What a stage presence! Not many people can play circles around Brad Paisley but I think Tommy just did. Wow! Both are class acts.

    Two guitar masters. How can anyone not like this? Even though Tommy isn't as famous as Brad he is definitely known in the guitar world as one of the absolute best of all time. I've had the fortune of seeing both of them play live. They're both the nicest guys you'll ever meet and it was a real privilege each time I saw them play.

    • @nreRagnaros

      Not famous? I think people outside US don't know Brad, Tommy is famous all over the world and gives over 300 concerts a year, on every freakin continent. I would say overall TE is much more famous, especially in the guitar community and world wide, than Brad.

    • @tylerroberts5994
      @tylerroberts5994 8 років тому +1

      Can you read? I didn't say not famous. I said not as famous. Don't get me wrong, I'm one of the biggest TE fans there are but I'm realistic. If you still want to debate that.. go look up facebook likes or itunes downloads for both of them and then come back and tell me who's more famous. Tommy and Brad are both famous all over the world not doubt. Brad plays sold out arenas in large cities. Tommy plays a lot of smaller venues in even more cities. Either way.. if you ask someone on the street if they know who Brad Paisley is vs Tommy Emmanuel.. I think we all know what they outcome would be 9 times out of 10. Tommy is a hero to a ton of guitarists including myself.. but so is Brad. If you fail to understand that both are great for various reasons, then I feel bad for you.

      @nreRagnaros 7 років тому +1

      Well sorry if I got you wrong. Ask someone on the street outside North America. No one has ever heard of Brad Paisley. And I wouldn't equate fame with sold albums in the US. And I never said anything about that Brad is not great. TE is it anyway, we two might be the biggest fans of him :D

      Agreed, Tommy is probably the most technically gifted player on the planet. My response may have been a little harsh. Sorry about that. Good to know there are plenty of people really passionate about his playing.

    alway amuses me that we compare talent.I always think its the beauty of the guitar playing that catches my ear.john fahey was such a player,competant a player as he was I,m sure in todays climate of competition he would not be noticed(his hayday was about 1970)but his playing was sublime mixed with poetry and humour of the song title.He was a true trailblazer in his time and many a guitar player was spewned in his shadow.cant say i mis him because i never knew him,but he was a great influence

    That is just sick. What wonderful players. Brad Paisley is a great player, to be sure, but Tommy Emmanuel is from another planet. He just seems to get better and better, and I've never seen anyone who can match his ability to play so many different songs and styles with such virtuosity. It's just a treat to see and hear this kind of musicianship. If you don't like this, you aren't human.
