Tommy is the finest interpreter on the guitar, as a Certified Guitar Player, he's one of the very best ever. I saw him play 2 days in a row, and I strained to hear the slightest imperfection or blemish in the sound, and I never did. He's amazing, sensitive, explosive, and wonderful. A must see for all guitar players and musicians of all kinds.

Taking Jimi Hendrix for example, he did not do well here in the States and then they welcomed him with open arms in the UK. Or bands like led Zeppelin who did not really catch on with the UK audiences but then came over here to the States and broke big really quick. I guess the person is without honor on their own land.

Phil was also a great player as well and a real character...had a collection of snakes in his home that he would haul out and introduce to his drunk guest.

Matteo Mancuso is the Tommy Emmanuel of the 21st century, but Tommy, well, he is a gift from God. Nobody ever listens to him play without being drawn into the amazing sound.
I've got a bit of his music. Amazing player. re Dragon, this part needs correcting: Dragon are a rock band which was formed in Auckland in January 1972, and, from 1975, based in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
Sydney recording studios had Phil and Tommy on speed dial. When recording a band, if the lead guitarist couldn't get the lead parts right, rather that wasting hour one of the Emmanuels would be called in to revord the lead part (using the lead players guitar si it sounded right) then they could head off home.

Absolutely nailed it! That's cool that you're able to get that influence. My dad was a pro jazz pianist who listened to Earth wind & fire and Tower of power. I grew up thinking the basic chords all had extensions and had to be played in a very funky fashion lol
Indeed, and furthermore, the more I play (keyboards) the more truly I find that it's far more important WHEN I play each note, than what the note is. Whether I'm backing, vamping, accompanying, or soloing.

I saw Tommy playing in a popular King's Cross bar (I forget the name of the bar but it mostly featured jazz and fusion bands) the night after Jaco Pastorius sat in with his band. I asked Tommy how it was and he was really pissed off because Jaco played drums instead of bass.
How cool was that! It is pretty funny though - I could see how Tommy would be frustrated because no matter how good Pastorius is at any other instrument, one cannot help feel shorted if he didn't play bass for them. That's a funny story - thanks for sharing that!
As an Aussie, we grew up with the Emmanuel brothers, and we all knew, even Tommy, that Phil was the better guitarist. While Tommy has evolved into the consumate maestro, Phil was content to stay in Australia, play some gigs, with anyone, hang out on the Sunshine Coast north of Brisbane, be with his girl and drink beer..... that was enough for Phil. Both LEGENDS in their own right.......................

In researching this, I always went out of my way to check out Tommy's work but doing these types of videos forces me to dig into their life - and I'm like wtf? Why have I not heard of Phil, this guy was a beast on the guitar! It makes sense the way you put it though - he didn't want the extreme limelight and one cannot blame him. Yep Phil was always lowkey, loved a drink, some hooch, supported local talent, always had a smile on his dial, loved his missus and kids,and just preferred staying close to home. He had a taste of the O/S limelight but just wasnt his thing. Tom on the other hand cant live without a stage, he LOVES it, breathes it, LIVES it.... Chalk and cheese really but Brothers in Arms AND Fingers. If you search youtube theres a few gigs of Phil and his playing was on another planet. @MBKMA69 oh I definitely went down the rabbit hole with Phil - I've been so blown away by Tommy's playing, it is undeniable the influence that Phil had on him. Opened up a whole brand new world for me - Phil was top-tier level, but a lot of people have not had the pleasure of enjoying his work. I tried to get a bit of that into the video at least in an effort to drop a few jaws and get them introduced. No problem - I really like your take! I'm hearing from a lot of Tommy fans, and even Tommy himself I think should be much more well-known than he is. There are a lot of people who were unfamiliar with him coming in and checking it out too, anyway I can spread the word on both of the brothers I will.
To be honest with you I never heard of this man. I'm going to find out who he is because he sounds fantastic. I'm actually embarrassed cause I thought I knew most players. Shame on me for not knowing who Tommy was.
Definitely go easy on yourself.... I have been playing, performing and listening to tons of players over more years than I would like to admit and yet I only heard of Tommy Emmanuel last year. The late introduction is actually what makes it even a cooler experience, I think anyway. I'm glad I could bring new folks like you on board - Tommy rocks!

His playing definitely isn't for everybody, when he gets excited he plays faster and when he wants to go to a real poignant moment he slows it down. It's kind of a wacky dynamic if you want to walk into a particular meter. Conversely I guess that's why a lot of people like his playing because he uses dynamics both rhythmically as well as in volume. I appreciate your take on his playing!

Instead of exploring the musical riches of a song, he turns a song into a musical charicature intended to impress audiences with his techniques as opposed to serving the message of the song."Hey look everybody! I can play the Minute Waltz in only 27 seconds!!" Hes a showman, not a musician. If you want to see a sideshow demonstration of how to play The Rolling Stones Satisfaction while brushing your teeth or typing into a typewriter all within two minutes at a furious tempo, Tommy is your man. Hes the Evel Knieval of music. Is he a great musician? Hell no.

Yep. Dad was a pro folk player. I started off backing him up and singing harmony. You need the rhythm and ear training that rhythm guitar teaches.
Absolutely nailed it! That's cool that you're able to get that influence. My dad was a pro jazz pianist who listened to Earth wind & fire and Tower of power. I grew up thinking the basic chords all had extensions and had to be played in a very funky fashion lol
Indeed, and furthermore, the more I play (keyboards) the more truly I find that it's far more important WHEN I play each note, than what the note is. Whether I'm backing, vamping, accompanying, or soloing.

I saw Tommy playing in a popular King's Cross bar (I forget the name of the bar but it mostly featured jazz and fusion bands) the night after Jaco Pastorius sat in with his band. I asked Tommy how it was and he was really pissed off because Jaco played drums instead of bass.
How cool was that! It is pretty funny though - I could see how Tommy would be frustrated because no matter how good Pastorius is at any other instrument, one cannot help feel shorted if he didn't play bass for them. That's a funny story - thanks for sharing that!
As an Aussie, we grew up with the Emmanuel brothers, and we all knew, even Tommy, that Phil was the better guitarist. While Tommy has evolved into the consumate maestro, Phil was content to stay in Australia, play some gigs, with anyone, hang out on the Sunshine Coast north of Brisbane, be with his girl and drink beer..... that was enough for Phil. Both LEGENDS in their own right.......................
What a comment! That is a great way to sum up Phil. In researching this, I always went out of my way to check out Tommy's work but doing these types of videos forces me to dig into their life - and I'm like wtf? Why have I not heard of Phil, this guy was a beast on the guitar! It makes sense the way you put it though - he didn't want the extreme limelight and one cannot blame him. Absolute pleasure GMS..... Yep Phil was always lowkey, loved a drink, some hooch, supported local talent, always had a smile on his dial, loved his missus and kids,and just preferred staying close to home. He had a taste of the O/S limelight but just wasnt his thing. Tom on the other hand cant live without a stage, he LOVES it, breathes it, LIVES it.... Chalk and cheese really but Brothers in Arms AND Fingers. If you search youtube theres a few gigs of Phil and his playing was on another planet. @MBKMA69 oh I definitely went down the rabbit hole with Phil - I've been so blown away by Tommy's playing, it is undeniable the influence that Phil had on him. Opened up a whole brand new world for me - Phil was top-tier level, but a lot of people have not had the pleasure of enjoying his work. I tried to get a bit of that into the video at least in an effort to drop a few jaws and get them introduced. No problem - I really like your take! I'm hearing from a lot of Tommy fans, and even Tommy himself I think should be much more well-known than he is. There are a lot of people who were unfamiliar with him coming in and checking it out too, anyway I can spread the word on both of the brothers I will.

To be honest with you I never heard of this man. I'm going to find out who he is because he sounds fantastic. I'm actually embarrassed cause I thought I knew most players. Shame on me for not knowing who Tommy was.
Definitely go easy on yourself.... I have been playing, performing and listening to tons of players over more years than I would like to admit and yet I only heard of Tommy Emmanuel last year. The late introduction is actually what makes it even a cooler experience, I think anyway. I'm glad I could bring new folks like you on board - Tommy rocks!

I know he’s a awesome guitarist . Perhaps the best. But I can’t hardly listen to him play due to his embellishments and timing
His playing definitely isn't for everybody, when he gets excited he plays faster and when he wants to go to a real poignant moment he slows it down. It's kind of a wacky dynamic if you want to walk into a particular meter. Conversely I guess that's why a lot of people like his playing because he uses dynamics both rhythmically as well as in volume. I appreciate your take on his playing!
Tommy is a sideshow freak. Instead of exploring the musical riches of a song, he turns a song into a musical charicature intended to impress audiences with his techniques as opposed to serving the message of the song."Hey look everybody! I can play the Minute Waltz in only 27 seconds!!" Hes a showman, not a musician. If you want to see a sideshow demonstration of how to play The Rolling Stones Satisfaction while brushing your teeth or typing into a typewriter all within two minutes at a furious tempo, Tommy is your man. Hes the Evel Knieval of music. Is he a great musician? Hell no.
