Not only is the voice luscious and beautiful in colour, it is so supple and limber! We were so lucky he existed in a time when he could be recorded and become truly immortal.
@mbutchard I have several LP/CD reissues of this which all play at 1.41 (just the actual recording, not lead in/run out). This posting is about 1.36 so it is fast by about one per cent. Enough difference for an experienced ear to hear. The speeds of early 78's varied a great deal and even by 1930 were still inconsistent. I slip up once in a while, but usually don't have the means to always be dead accurate.
Incredible voice, but is the pace deliberately this speedy or is it just because of the old recording? I was not sure about it after listening... I think it ought to be so...
Of course, the best version of this serenade...Hehehe....If Pinza were alive, and in activity....who would care of a guy called Dmitri hvorostovsky? DH's version of this serenade is a joke...A JOKE!!!! DH can' t sing Don giovanni!!! quell'uomo dei capelli osigenati è un fiasco, signori!Un invento della publicit'a! Ankhsnammon(Nina)

Gorgeous, glorious sound and wonderful charm and suavity.
Pinza is indeed one of a kind :-)
Glorious indeed!
Perfection.

Although sounding a little harsh, I would agree with the above.
right!

If the date listed above (1930) is correct he would have been in his prime. When do you thnk this was recorded?
does enyone now the notes for guitar?
The final notes of his phrases are often alarmingly flat, and his intonation over all is dicey.

Um, the record is playing too fast, making it a semitone too high and distorting his true sound.
Not a good recording to form opinions about him.
what a ridiculous and cheessy comment
I like Ramey better.
Ramey is a huge fan of Pinza.
Had Pinza already taken "DON GIOVANNI" into his repertoire in 1930?
E chi se importa! And who cares!
