How aerodynamics help make a car go faster

- If you are a fan of car racing games, you are probably aware that car design and aerodynamics play an important role in a car’s speed. That is because car design makes up the aerodynamics of a car and speed is not the only factor affected by aerodynamics.
Also, aerodynamics is not only important for a fast car but also for a standard passenger car; in fact, you might be surprised to learn that some of these passenger cars have a better design in terms of aerodynamics than a sports car. Before going into more detail about the topic, let’s start with answering the basic questions: “What is aerodynamics, and what affects the aerodynamics of a car?”
You probably do not notice while you are walking down the street or driving at low speeds in your car, but the surrounding air displays resistance to you or your car. Actually, any solid object moving through the air is met with this resistance, and the study of the interactions between the air and these solid bodies is called aerodynamics. A car with good aerodynamics cuts through the wall of air in a more efficient way. Two separate forces make up the aerodynamics, and there are special techniques and materials used to test the aerodynamics of a car.
If you would like to learn more about these techniques and how automotive aerodynamics is measured, this video is here to answer your questions. Apart from learning technical information about vehicle aerodynamics, you will also learn interesting details such as why designers chose certain shapes like “raindrop” as well.

A very good example is the mg ex 181. With only a 290 hp 1.5 liter inline 4 it reached 395km/h (245mp/h) in 1957. After that they tuned the engine up to have 300hp in 1959 and it reached a top speed of 410km/h (254mp/h). It has a drag coefficient of 0.12.
The first question. It really depends on what aspect of aerodynamics you’re talking about. If you only focus on drag coefficient. Then race cars are the worst in aerodynamics. But if you look at the use of aerodynamics and downforce. Then race cars are better than every road car. They are designed to make as much downforce as possible at the expense of more drag and “dirty air” behind it
Agreed, elementary explanations, but its a start..
Why do you use full stops when you should be using commas?
That's why F1 has drs
I love to learn more about car engineering 😅😅
What is my favorite (relatively) aerodynamic vehicle? Unquestionably the Chevrolet Corvette. A sports car that needs downforce, massive tires, and air ducts everywhere for cooling, etc. (hard to achieve a low Cd. with these requirements!). A stupid-fast car with V8 power that easily achieves over 30MPG if driven accordingly, looks gorgeous, surprisingly practical, reliable, and (relatively) easily obtainable. 'Murica 🇺🇸
Nice efforts you put in to make these videos 👍
How about F1 cars!?😁
F1 cars have alot of drag, like alot. The drag co-efficient of an F1 car is literally 0.7. That’s worse than a minivan. BUT, let me explain why it has alot. Downforce needs drag to function. And downforce is very important on cornering speed and lateral grip.
@@andreigabrielmarayag5716 yeah you're right. And that's why the drivers must be really hard on the brake when they lose its front wing.
Iskandar Ali Mubarok yeah, front wing gone, alot of downforce gone. Imagine oneday the FiA banned front wing changes, itll be a lame sport now lol
@@andreigabrielmarayag5716 straight outta donut media?
@@roshanpradeep8532 most of it is
An F1 can literally drive upside-down thanks to downforce or in this case up-force
Yes and No
@@DhruvKumar-us5eq that's funny 😂. Wdym by that
No it cant
@@fullstrbull it theoretically can. No one's conducted the experiment in real life though
@@prajwalchavan4781 firstly the center of pressure has the be at the exact location of the center of gravity through x,y, however the CoP changes with velocity as its exponential meaning that point is not at a consistant point.
secondly the tyres need enough weight/grip to be able to maintain the constant speed which it wont with the excess drag being produced
Very Nice, Informative Video. 👌
the penguin is very aero and hydro dynamic i think.
Nailed the intro with the BMW E26 M1, 3.5 inline 6 symphony😍
Super cool
I would like to see the bmw M1 at 200 mph vs mini van at 200 mph test raindrop shape vs arrow shape.
Adipoli❤️👍
DS Survolt. Guess it's more of a show than drive, but that was my best Asphalt 8 car and I explored about it
This video gave me a spark for engineering
i am still waiting for someone to put Meredith effect into automobile designs
Nice video by interesting engineering
Tesla Model S at 0.208 drag coefficient is currently the aerodynamic champion!
give two reasons why this wedge shape allows the car to move as fast as possible
Are Ac Consume More Petrol/Diesel than petrol consumed in air drag due to open windows of car
To answer your question at 0:07, none of the above. The gen 1 Honda Insight is the most aerodynamic of them all.
The honda wasnt a choice lol, only the race car and minivan
@@andreigabrielmarayag5716 r/whoosh, lol
remember, the drag coefficient doesn't matter too much if there isn't enough downforce to keep it from flying off the track
The lambo terzo millenio is my favorite aerodynamic car.
My favorite is a 93 Volvo coefficient of .31... And a 2000 bmw 740il ... Good times...
What about F1 race cars cd value...?
worse.

It's a shame to not mention CYBERTRUCK..😂😂😂
Didn't even thing about the amount of sharp edges on that thing! Time to cancel my preorder lmao
i like things related to car
My favourite aerodynamic car is Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4 doors!
actually the EQS beats the Aclass with a CD of 0.202. The Hyundai ioniq 6 has a CD of 0.21 and the Mercedes EQXX has a CD of 0.17, although i dont think the EQXX is a production car, but this actually beats the Volkswagen XL1 (whic has a CD of 0.186) which was previously the car with the least CD
How about the cd of Rolls Royce Cullinan? 🤔
So is a raindrop the most aerodynamic shape possible?
how to calculate the drag coefficient of a car without computer?
Drag force=(1/2)*rho*velocity^2*area*drag coefficient. If you know everything else through wind tunnel testing and measurements, you can solve for the drag coefficient via algebra
@@gabedarrett1301 thank you so much
Great video, I liked how you described these concepts! Though I find it strange how a video about automotive aerodynamics doesn't even mention Aptera 🤦
Is This possible?
Aptera has drag coefficient of 0.15

It a bit hard to know, it could be many cars. Looks like some kind of concept, maybe a hyundai coupe or the lights wich looks like the one on a genesis g35

Sienna does not have more aerodynamic design than M1. It has smaller drag coefficient which is basically drag divided by area. Since Sienna has significantly higher frontal area it has a smaller Cd but it has higher air resistance at the same speed than M1!!!
