Gaisal became an Horror Spot. No Trains stop in Gaisal, other than any signal issues. Many passengers in that route have seen the Accident of 1999, repeated by their own eyes, when they reach at that spot. It is just like Begunkodar Railway Station. Even I believe that there is something over there.

Bohut khub Subham,main ASSAM se hi hu,aur jab yeh durghatna hui tab main sirf 15 saal ka tha Aur sirf laasye hi laasye dikh raha tha,mujhe yaad hai NF rly ne kuch hi logon ki tasbir lagai thee lekin jab v sunta toh log bolte ki Mera Koi nahi raha.

2:48 This is wrong. Only the ICF coaches for general/unreserved compartments didn't have cushion padding. Sleeper and AC classes had cushion padding, I would say that the upholstery was better than the new coaches.
I was in Dumdangi Oil India, clearly remember the incident. Those days Awadh Assam was one of the fastest between Old Delhi and GHY after north east express. Morning walk pe gaya station to that was the first time I saw two trains stationary on same tracks. Dont remember the train names, 1st loop was left alone for Releof train to pass. TV nahi tha dekhne ke liye and news suna Pointsman se ki Gaisal pe durghatna ghati hai awadh aur mail pe. Saw the scrambled coaches been taken away on a BFR a couple of days later.
Must have been a horrible sight. It's gives me chills down the spine about the extent of horror this case presents.

Very sad..one of my friends brother was the Alp of Awadh Assam express and at that time he was just 23 years. He was based in Howarh Division ER. But due to staff problem that day he had to duty in Dibrugarh section which was completely a new section to both the pilots and the guard..so they cannot even identify the route they were simply driving baaed on the GPS installed in loco this is another reason why the crew cannot identify the route
Same problem happen with Colomandal Express at Jajpur Road Railway Station. Goods driver of Eastern Railway was running Coromandal Superfast Express of South Eastern Railway.

Mere khayal se 1999 me single line hua karti thi ghaisal section pe aur tb k WDM2 engine me ACD(suraksha kawatch) nahi thi jo ki aajkal k engines me lage dikhayi detein hai. NFR ki ye durghatana sabse khtarnak me se ek hai. Engine k lights be ache nahi hote the, jahan aajkal halogen bulbe with good reflector hain,. 2 saal Pehle ki baat hai, ek train black diamond express wrong line pe chalet chalet lagbhag 80-100kms chal chuki thi, thandi Mausam ghana kohra tha Kolkata-dankuni-burdwan section me, bohot der baad driver ko ye bhanak lagi ki gari galat track pe chal rahi hai, credit jata hai gateman jisne ye station master ko suchit kiya, fir kuch samay baad use wapas laya gaya pichle station me au sahi track pe rawana karaya. Warna aisa ek aur hadsa hota.

My grandfather was a loco pilot on that time but after the accident he was informed to take relief trains on spot....he told that the scenario was really worst all dead bodies are lying here and there and he also told that one of his cholegue i.e driver of Brahmaputra mail on that day,his body parts was totally separated and only his hip parts was identified,they identified it by getting his id card on his back pocket in his pant.....he also told it was his worst experience in life......babies,women,old men and women all are dead......
Not correct, the body of the driver of Brahmaputra mail was identified by his daughter not by his ID card but by recognizing the small pocket comb which he used to keep in his back pocket.

Shubham jee next day morning I was supposed to travel to new Delhi from NJP by north east express. I would like to correct some information. During those days NFR mein arm signal hua karta tha so automatic red hone ka sawal hi nahi hai
First of all in the year 1999 there was single line between Kishanganj and NJP. Also, Gaisal station is not a remote location. This station is right next to National Highway 31 so the station was highly accessible.
The wreckage of the accident stayed there for a long time. Saw it even after a long time while going to NJP. Truly horrible!

Bro you haven't tell all the story, at the time of the accident there was track doubling work and upgradation of interlocking system
was going on and due to that many interlocking points are set manually and trains are running on single line track with crossings in each station. At the time of the accident awadh assam express was waiting for crossing at the gaisal station on wrong track and the station master didn't realise that he has given permission to the brahamaputra mail to enter on the track where awadh assam express was waiting and then it collided head on with awadh assam express on that track that's how the accident happen.
Actually track interlocking was going on at that time in Kishanganj but after Kishanganj that train should have been put back onto the correct track but due to callousness it was not done. And driver thought he had been diverted because of line work and proceeded on the wrong track. Court found that staff of Kishanganj and Panjipara were guilty. It was not fault of Gaisal but of ASM Kishanganj.

If this same accident would have happened on LHB trains, what would be the approximate death toll? Same / ~50% / ~25% / ~10% / much less. I am just looking for a ballpark number. From the pictures on the India Today webpage, it seems that the coaches climbed on top of one another - a scenario that the LHB coaches would be able to avoid.

I was new ASM in Assam ,only 3 months old as Station Master that time, Dn Brahmaputra Mail did not started from Guwahati ,it originated from New Bangaigaon,the passenger from Guwahati,Rangia who have reservations brought to NBQ by bus,but the train started before last bus arrived NBQ,the passenger of Brahmaputra Mail querled with SM of NBQ and asked him to brought back the train from Kokhrajhar,the train would passed the Kishaganj station if they don't quarrel with SM of NBQ .The sm of NBQ also should not despatch the train before all buses from Guahati arrived.Anyway I think that this was the greatest train accident which happened in this planet, because in up Avhad Assam express the roof of train also use to be full.I think about 2000 people died due to this accident.
