Great discussion. Enjoyed it . Judy visited Dublin in early 50’s for two weeks .She wowed the audiences in the theatre royal, with her voice and sing interpretation. She would chat with the locals and pop into the bar near the royal. On “cottage for sale “ song I think Peggy Lee did a magic version 👍

My mom was a Judy Garland fan so I grew to enjoy her. I became a Liza fan as well. Love them both so much. My own daughter somehow became a fan of Edith Piaf. Many Americans don't know Edith Piaf so when I explain who she is, I say she's the French Judy Garland.
Kauai! Oh yes, Judy and Liza are terriific. Edith Piaf a legend too! Welcome! Nice to have you with us! I've been a Judy fan for 60 years and a Piaf fan for 50, and would say that Judy was privately a barrel of laughs and had a tragic public image she encouraged, whereas Piaf REALLY was tragic. Piaf was even shorter than Judy! Both had powerful, beautiful voices, but otherwise- to me- not foreign versions of each other.
@@akrenwinkle You're correct because you know the two well, but for me it's a simplistic answer I give to people who have no idea who Edith Piaf is. They're both iconic, celebrated singers who existed around the same time, sang similar types of songs, had problems with drugs/alcohol, died much too early (at the same age), etc.
@@KauaiSis I know you're providing a thumb-nail for toddlers to introduce them to Piaf, and believe it or not, they nothing about Judy except for "Oz," and many don't know Liza is her daughter. Still, I find it misleading; their differences were more than their similarities.

Why would "respecting Judy Garland" be jolting or upsetting to her fans? Schulman is a brilliant essayist, but some of the things he says, his viewpoints/perspectives strike me as bizarre. In my opinion (as a lifelong Judy Garland fan), I find it ironic that host Jim Masters displays more compassion, insight, and understanding of Garland than Garland "authority and historian" Schulman does here.
Hi BroadwayGuy! thanks so much for watching this episode of The Jim Masters Show! entertainment, lifestyle, celebrity talk show series. Hope you enjoy more from our series! I think Lawrence was sharing that he isn't an "obsessed fan" but an admirer and coming at it from the point of a music historian, critic and producer. He focuses on her musical career versus other aspects of her life. Judy Garland was wonderful and gone way too soon. We all loved her. Come join us again! Great to have you with us!
He is obviously a fan but dislikes the connotations of that word. His use of ‘respect’ doesn’t align with what he says next about his obsession to listen to everything she did.

I thought this interview with Lawrence Schulman was going to be different and focus on her career and voice, and her talent. It started out that way and then he started to talk about her addition and her other problems. We all know that, I've read 6 Biography's, and other stuff. His seems to admire her 3rd husband and manager Sid Luft. Yes, he was able to get her concert career started in Europe and then the USA. going after her film career ended at MGM studios. Then he and Judy helped make A Star is Born at Warner Brother's studio. After that didn't do well, for many reasons, and they lost the money they invested. Sid Luft her wonderful manage mismanaged their money, didn't pay taxes, and gambled a lot of it away. They also had marital problems due to both. of them. There was a lot more drinking and Judy was hospitalized with Hepatitis. When they divorced there no money. I think he was a better husband and father, than a manager. The author I never heard of and he sounds very negative about her personal life. He also does doesn't seem to appreciate Judy's daughter Liza Minnelli's talent. He doesn't mention her other daughter Lorna Luft, who is not that well-known and or famous as her mother and sister. I will not be reading his book, and this was disappointing on so many levels.
In this book, he focuses on her music career and not all the other things many people know about Judy. There are also younger generations who don't know much about her so learning is a constant. His book is not a tabloid book or that of a super fan. It is his observations as a music critic and author. Thanks for watching.
So there's more to Judy Garland than The Wizard of Oz all thanks to this man. Well done!
Thanks for watching and enjoying this episode of The Jim Masters Show and for your comment!
Golly, Judy did something besides The Wizard of Oz? Who knew!! 👶
