      Narrowing down the patient's irritants that could cause the sores can be difficult but starting with the possibility of changing the toothpaste is a good start.

    I used to get canker sores all the time (a few times a month; sometimes 2-3 at a time!). I was told that I probably lacked some vitamins and minerals (everything was fine in my blood work). I did some research, and I came across SLS. After I switched toothpaste, I maybe get a canker sore once a year. It is such a relief! Thank you for this video, Dr. Greger.

      Canker sores come form eating animal products,high sugar,and processed foods. It also comes from not brushing your teeth enough. Bad bacteria build up is what causes the sore,especially if you bite your lip by accident,the bacteria now has a wound to infest.

    I hope someone sees this. I think SLS strips a protective layer off lips as well. I've had decades of cold sores, extremely dry or chapped lips during the summer or winter. I could never get around it. I found Vaseline helped mitigate it to a degree, but it was a constant battle of dry/chapped lips, cold sores and slightly cracked corners that made it hard to talk or eat. I thoguht it was an allergy to the sun, wind, alcohol, a bunch of different foods, and so on. A year ago I stumbled on the SLS allergy theory and took a shot since I had nothing to lose. I am so, so, so happy to say a year later, SLS free in my soap, shampoo, toothpaste and mouthwash that my life has changed drastically.

    I started working at a smoothie bar nearly two months ago. About 3 weeks ago, the skin on my hands became red, itchy, and extremely dry. This is sometimes normal for me since I have sensitive skin and eczema. This week, I had open wounds and blood- my hands hurt all throughout my day and made getting to sleep very difficult. I could barely use my right hand from the pain at points. I changed my lotion and hand soap but it did nothing for me. Finally, I decided to investigate everything at work.
    The second ingredient in the dish soap used at my work is SLS and nearly 30% of the dish sanitizer used is ammonium chloride. I am astonished that the employees are not required nor even suggested or trained to use gloves while washing dishes or fishing them out of the sanitizer.
    i feel ashamed to have not come to this realization sooner, but I'm shocked that I was never made aware of this danger.
    SLS is also commonly used in shampoos :o It's insane what we use on a daily basis. I'm happy to finally be making the change to less harsh toiletries, cleaners, and cosmetics.

      You also need to be aware of anything Citrus you come in contact with. I bar tended years ago. Prepping the bar entailed cutting limes, lemons and oranges. The constant contact with citrus oils will burn away your cuticles and skin. We called it Bar Rott. The citrus may be the original cause while the soap is just making it worse. The citric acid does the same with teeth and gums after drinking citrus juices. Rinse you mouth with water after drinking juice. SLS free soap for your hands.

      Veinous I blamed the ingredients that I researched and found out cause skin corrosion. The other ingredients were either not noteworthy or not listed.
      After taking the detergent and sanitizer out of my life, my hands healed.
      How is this conclusion that SLS and ammonium chloride corroded my skin based on research and personal experience illogical?
      If you'd like me to list out all the ingredients and you can look them up yourself, just let me know. I'm not here to blaspheme, just to share my experience with taking SLS out of my life and how helpful it has been as someone with skin issues. Obviously most of my coworkers have little to no issue with it, but I was the one that did.

    • @orbweaving
      @orbweaving 7 років тому +1

      How am I not sure? I have been using the same lotion for 4 years and the same hand soap for 8 months. On the day my hands began to corrode, I had been soaking my hands in detergent and sanitzer for around a half hour to an hour every day. I think it's quite likely that this is the source of my skin irritation. When I researched the ingredients from these two solutions, these were the chemicals proven to cause corrosion AND they were the most abundant ingredient and the 2nd most abundant ingredient. If I had reason to believe that my wounds were caused by something else in the solution, I would be an outlier in accordance to research done on those chemicals and their reactions with skin. This makes me think it's unlikely, so I attributed it to what makes sense. No, until I actually go through and do an experiment myself in which I purchase all of these chemicals isolated and put them on my skin, I won't be able to say with 100% certainty that it was SLS and ammonium chloride that corroded my skin, I think that's incredibly unrealistic. I'm not publishing a paper here, I'm just writing a UA-cam comment about my perspective.

    • @natureasintended

      Pineapple burns the mouth when under-ripe, aside from other fruits causing problems when under ripe. Ripe pineapples may not be available outside of the tropics.

      erm u can age ripen them lol

    • @natureasintended
      @natureasintended 7 років тому

      Unlike with some other fruits, leaving pineapples to age ferments them (making them less acidic), rather than ripening them.

    • @Albopepper
      @Albopepper 7 років тому +5

      Pineapple contains an enzyme called bromelain. It's a proteolytic enzyme, a type helps our bodies digest proteins. Which is fine in our stomachs, but our mouth has no natural protection, so the proteolytic enzyme can react with the oral mucous layer. Add to that, the pineapple's acidity, which is around 3.2-3.5 on the pH scale. So the bromelain compromises our protective oral mucous layer, then the acidity of the pineapple causes extra irritation.

      Whenever I eat pineapple here in California, it burns my mouth pretty badly if it's more than a few bites, but I was in Hawaii recently and had the super ripe local pineapple every day, I was probably eating half a pineapple per day and I had absolutely no mouth irritation. Another reason I need to move to Hawaii, haha

    I never heard of the SLS-cancer connection, but when I used to work at a health food store, people would come in for SLS-free toothpaste because their mouths would break out in sores when using it. Some had horrific experiences with it and it took them a loooong time to figure out what it was. You go to the dr and they are like..."well its NOT the toothpaste, let's look elsewhere."

    I used to have canker sores on a regular basis to the point I got a prescription to smear on at first notice of one to clear it up (it worked amazingly well) However, since converting to a plant-based diet a couple of years ago I've had only one. Also, plaque buildup has gone from needing a cleaning every 4 months to almost none. You don't believe it until you live it. I haven't switched toothpaste yet, but will as any unnecessary irritation is just unneccesary. Happy Friday everybody!

    I suffered with mouth ulcers my whole life - the norm for me was to just live with them - at any given time, I would have 3 - 4. Then one day, about two years ago, my dad found a remote website forum and told me to avoid SLS toothpaste. I was sceptical since NOTHING had helped up to that point and to this day, I only get them when I bite my lip! When I first started using it, I had canker sores all around the inside of my mouth, my tongue and back of my throat felt sore, and I could swear my sense of taste diminished. I stopped using it at first, only because it stung my mouth not because I thought it was the cause of the problems. When the problems went away I started using the toothpaste and again and lo and behold! The problems came right back, even faster. Needless to say, I threw that toothpaste away. I wonder if the SLS concentration was higher than I was used to, because I was using Pronamel without a problem previously.

      I have the same experience as you. Switching to no tooth paste (brushing but not using any toothpaste) hasn't made the sores stop, but it causes them to not be nearly as bad. There is definitely another factor that causes them, in my case most likely auto immune, so i dont know if ill ever truly be able to get rid of them alltogether, but stopping the use of irritating SLS toothpastes definitely make them more bearable.

    This is intriguing as irritants over time can lead to cancerous cells as the inflammatory response damages some cells. As the cells reproduce, newer cells, if still in the presence of various irritants can potentially mutate. If the cell cycle is disrupted, cancer can indeed be the result.

    I make mine own paste. I make a year's supply. You can reduce the scale to fit your mix.
    I take 2.5lbs of xylitol and add it in a large bowl for mixing, and also add one full cup of food grade diatomaceous earth (ONLY FOOD GRADE!!!!!!!! - AND DO NOT BREATH IT IF IT GETS IN THE AIR!!). I mix it up and add liquefied coconut oil just enough to make it into a dry-ish paste. Then I add essential peppermint oil a little at a time fully mixing and then tasting the mix so it's altoid strong.
    I then pack it all up into mason jars, and I use a half teaspoon when I brush. I also like to work a bit around my mouth right after eating because the xylitol kills off the bacteria that is reproducing like crazy thanks to the food I just ate - preventing my mouth ph from dropping into cavity producing territory.
    I always had very sensitive teeth, and they would ache periodically on their own throughout the day, but two weeks after using this paste - the aching vanished. My dentist raves about my hygiene, and I've been doing this for around 5 years.
    Thanks to Dr Gregor, I will probably add amla to the mix next time as well. And in my opinion, xylitol is not fit for human consumption, but it's good for killing bacteria and spitting out!

      I'm looking to get my hair to grow as long and intact as possible, so I avoid sulfates in shampoos so I don't get split ends and greasy scalp. it's so bad that almost 100% of shampoos and soaps/showergel in the market (especially in big brand grocery stores) contain sulfates. only few people know it's drying to the skin and hair. many people get itchy dry skin after showering, not knowing how to prevent that. it's just expected by the people that a shampoo has to bubble. big brands won't risk selling a sulfate-free, non bubbling shampoo that would put people of when they don't even know that the bubble come form the drying sulfates themselves...

    Dear Dr. Greger,
    Can't you somehow debunk Dr. Eric Berg, who claims that a ketogenic diet is the only possible diet to stay healthy and lean long term and that a vegan diet makes you more prone to kidney stones?
    And unfortunately it all seems scientifically and medically backed up.
    I think it is sad and horrible that he makes people think that they need to eat 4 eggs and a certain amount of animal every day to stay healthy.
    Do you know his channel? It is pretty big and popular and in my opinion bad for animals and environment.
    And I would really like to know whether he is right with his claims about ketones being the best and cleanest fuel for the body.
    Kind regards
    Stef

      Bee Stein Dr. Greger has done various videos on high fat/high protein low carb diets vs lower fat/lower protein higher carb diets which related to Atkins, Paleo, and ketogenic diets. I found a video by Dr. Klaper about ketogenic diets, as well. Do a quick YT search and check Dr. Greger's NutritionFacts playlist on YT for categorized videos under certain subjects/themes.

    • @gwynedd1
      @gwynedd1 6 років тому

      He already failed to do so in several uncharacteristically babbling interviews. As to the good Dr. Greger, he has a vegan bias. This is shown on what he chooses to study. However as to the studies themselves he narrates them rather fairly it would seem and quite coherently. He had no actual data to back up his low carb skepticism and it showed.

      "Let me make it simple for you. He's a chiropractor who is trying to get
      rich selling supplements and books. Do the math. Thank you for your vote
      and continuing support."
      Pfft what are you a communist? You work with the bare minimum amount of sustenance while conforming to a perfect ethical state of being? There are 100 people on the planet who can operate on that kind of economy.
      The supplements act as a medium for donation. The business model is quite excellent for both parties. If he did not get any results , then he would have been out of business long ago. If you don't agree with him or fail to find satisfactory results, one may not visit his channel or buy his goods. However the problem it seems for you is that his protocol does achieve results. I am not a mind numbed fool who thinks hundreds of thousands of people's personal experiences are hallucinated. I am quite sure I have not hallucinated either. Its not the only means to an end, as I am sure many of his followers may think, but it is a means to a btter end than the SAD diet.

    I use sls toothpaste whole my life since I was a little kid I actually used to swallow it and i never never never ever got that sort of reaction the things that are being said about sls are bullshit the only thing that sls does is stripping your natural protective layer and natural oils so if you are familiar with dry skin or exceem that layer is needed but if you have normal skin theres no.problem using a sls product cause that layer can build up alot of bad bacteria and sls can remove that bacteria, cause the natural oils return back in to your skin in no time but i dont recommend sls if you have dry skin or a rash.
    Try using a sls free body wash if you have some rash or dry skin and when all your rash and dry parts are gone try taking some vitamins so.the blood flow through your body produces normal amounts of natural oils again and then its safe for you to use sls again.
    The best always is to choose voor a natural sls by that I mean a natural product with already alot of natural oils in it like rituals or olay or shea moisture etc.
    The common sls dove body wash can be irritating because it doesnt contain any good oils.
    If you have any further questions I can help you.
    Ps. I have experienced rash and I still do untill this moment the fay I began using sls free products my rash is less irritating and when i use the sls it just gets more dryer but I know when this rash is gone and i have normal skin again its no problem to use sls body wash but dont forget to follow with some skin oils after the shower or a good natural lotion or body cream.

      Nikolay Nikolov I went vegan, whole food plant based, I don’t even need toothpaste anymore. Idk if it’s the bacteria in meat or the bacteria in your saliva and body breaking down meat but I don’t have bad BO anymore after my body got used to it and allowing my body to flush out all the other bullshit it had in it. Very big blessing besides the energy and health I experience, even mentally. You have to go about it the right way but it’s worth it. Don’t be one of those vegans who thinks they can eat anything vegan that’s processed garbage, there’s no health benefits in that. Might as well continue to eat meat if that’s the case.

      it really depends on what brand or preparation you use. when I first tried zero-waste lifestyle, I brushed my teeth with clay. my teeth weren't hurt, but they weren't pearly white like with regular toothpaste. baking soda gave me mouth sores. now I use a vegan fluoride toothpaste, my teeth are white and strong as ever. haven't researched wether or not fluoride is sure or not, I've heard there is discord on that topic, but I haven't researched scientific papers yet. maybe Doc Greger's next videos will be n that topic.

    I've created my own homemade facial moisturizer and it uses a type of emulsifying wax that has sodium lauryl sulfate, everytime I put it on my face it would go red and burn constantly, at first I've ignored it thinking okay it might be an astringent effect but it turns out it's extremely irritant to the point it hurts a lot. now I'm back to basic ingredients to avoid this fancy emulsifying wax whose ingredients can be very toxic for our skin microbiome

    This was a bit of a pointless video really. Canker sores aren't that big of an issue, and SLS is mostly replaced by SLES (less irritating) in many products anyway. I think titanium oxide seems like a bigger concern in toothpaste. I'd rather see some more information on actually carcinogenic additives (of which there seem to be plenty) or intermittent fasting or so.
    Out of all the pressing and currently heavily discussed matters in food and nutrition right now, why pick something relatively insignificant like SLS?

    • @theanemicproblematicvegan7998
      @theanemicproblematicvegan7998 7 років тому +2

      it's not as important as what's usually in Dr Greger's videos, but it still should be known. soduim laureth sulfate (even harsher that lauryl sulfate) as basically present in any soap/showergel or shampoo in my country. lucky for you if it isn't the case in your region. sulfate free soaps/shampoo are hard to find for me in m region, I buy them on the internet. many people get irritated dry skin and don't know it's caused by sulftaes in the products they cuse.

    • @A_A828
      @A_A828 7 років тому

      If I understood correctly SLES (sodium laureth sulfate) is supposed to be milder than SLS, but yeah, I live in a country where almost everything contains SLES as well. I do try to avoid it, I just think it's not that pressing of a matter right now.

      Vladimir Yuvachov I'm waiting for the information on intermittent fasting videos as well... but I do like these shorter tidbits of info scattered amid the serial cliffhangers. Toothpaste is something the majority of us use multiple times a day, so this information is highly relevant for the majority as well as bring a simple change people can make. I already knew about it, thru research after a personal experience with mouth desquamation, which was both scary and disgusting.

    • @aarushchaubey516
      @aarushchaubey516 3 роки тому

      @@aarushchaubey516 Heh, to be honest, I don't remember making this comment, I must've had a bad day... Sorry for being a sourpuss. And looks like the EU has finally started looking into banning titanium dioxide as a food additive, so hopefully soon that will be a moot point anyway.
