  • "I bought this farm just over two years ago; the number one thing I looked for when buying it was the amount of cover. This tract is only 80 acres; it's mainly timber, so you've kind of got to deal with the cards you're dealt when you go into a small tract like this. My whole goal is to improve what's already here." - Shawn Luchtel
Shawn Luchtel of Heartland Bowhunter and Joel Taylor of the Midwest Land Group perform Timber Stand Improvement (TSI) on Shawn's newly-purchased 80-acre tract of land. Follow along as they use the onX Hunt App's aerial imagery and Shape Tool to determine the areas with the thickest canopy and create a plan to thin out the softwoods on Shawn's new parcel. In doing so, they not only improve the habitat from a wildlife standpoint but also increase the value of the property. TSI creates more food for wildlife by allowing more light to reach the forest floor, as well as eliminating competition for hardwoods such as oak and hickory.

Amazing video! Love the information and the tools you all provide! Keep up the good work! On X has helped us scout for turkeys this spring and as new elk guides in KY we look forward to taking advantage of it during summer scouting and during the fall!

Just wanna add to the statement made about “some states may pay you to do these practices” some state agencies may, but the USDA NRCS will pay a cost share on implementing these practices through EQIP (Environmental Quality Incentive Program) and CSP (Conservation Stewardship Program). They might also cost share on getting a forester or biologist out to your property to develop a plan.
Also, the good folks at Land and Legacy have tons of info out especially about the benefits of disturbances, early successional habitat and young forest.

This is interesting timing. I am in Southern Alabama, visiting my mom from Southern California. She has 40 areas of land. It also binds up next to a hunting club land. I am very interested in this. for I will be inheriting the land at some time.

What a nice job..but I prefer Husqvarna to Stihl when using saws professionally. Liked
