This show was literally just a primetime Soap Opera for kids and pre teens.
JT's death was unforgivable still not over it either. He and Liberty were close to getting back together. 😥

There are loads of episodes that remind me of 13rw, like when they were trying to find out who assaulted Zoe. It was only a 2 parter but I enjoyed that more than I enjoyed watching most of 13rw, degrassi is that good (maybe I’m biased 🤷♀️)
I still get choked up about Cam. He was such a good character. Him and Maya were so adorable together. Gosh I still remember watching the episode. Just constantly crying. Degrassi Next Generation was was such an inspirational show to grow up to. High praise 🙌.

Someone will get drunk (twice), someone will go to labour (twice), there will be a fire (twice), Someone will have a gun (twice) and someone will be shot (poor adam), someone will rip your dress off, your date will cheat on you with your friend (dick move liberty), there will be knife crime and don't get me started on the boiler room, and much more. So yeah. NEVER go to a school dance

As a kid Paige’s trial always made me feel uneasy especially knowing Dean assaulted her and got a way with it
Fast forward I was in the the same position as an adult and got that same smug reaction from the guy who assaulted me

Out of all these moments, Cam’s suicide hit the hardest. That poor baby was under so much pressure. If your struggling, know that there’s always a reason to keep going. Never give up🧡
That hurt. And what really got me was his gf storyline in Next Class when she said she didn't know who she was anymore. That hurt so much.
Hey It's Noreen her overdose scene had me in tears! Watching her mental health deteriorate was so hard to watch

She didn’t get assaulted! It was traumatizing of course but he just smells her hair and threatens her because Spike and Snake get there first :)

Episode 1 was already dark! Emma almost being taken advantaged. For me the saddest episode was when Jimmy got shot. Why? I didn't really feel about it but when his drawings later on showed it still affected him.
While not my pick, I do agree with number 1 though. What makes it more painful was that it came without notice.
People say it's too shocking but it keeps in line with the Show's tone. "Anything in life can happen"
The day Jimmy got shot and JT's death, to me will go down on my top five most darkest DTNG episodes. I've been watching this show since I was 10 back in 2003 even though it started in 2001. I grew up with JT, Emma, Manny, Toby, Paige, Spinner and of course Jimmy before he became known as Drake. Jimmy and JT were the OG's of the next generation and to see their lives be changed forever was heartbreaking because even though they were at times goofy and immature, they were lovable guys. I get teary eyed. 😢

I started watching in 2002 and was in 10th grade at the time. JT's death still gets to me and I've watched it at least 15 times....maybe more. I've binge watched the first 7 seasons a lot
A heartbreaking moment in Darcy's storyline that I'm glad was shown in this video was when she said, "It's not possible, I'm not the sort of person that happens to." That's such a prominent example of how society teaches us to blame the victims rather than the rapists. Darcy thinks that because she was a "good girl" who was saving herself for marriage and was barely ever promiscuous in any way (other than the MyRoom page) that she should be safe from someone taking advantage of her sexually. When the reality is, rapists are evil and they don't care who you are, how you look or how you act, because they just want to hurt people. And the only person who is EVER at fault is the rapist themselves. Because there is absolutely NO excuse to ever do that to someone. But the way Darcy felt is unfortunately realistic for a lot of victims. Degrassi was such an accurate, precise and realistic show and was way ahead of its time as well.
I wish they had an episode where Paige, Darcy, and Zoey can talk about their experiences so they don't feel alone. Society is going to blame how they dress or the fact that they were at a party but at least they could heal together.
JT's death is even more painful when you go back and watch the show again. He had a promising future as either an actor, a fashion designer, or a veterinarian. He could have excelled at any of them but his life was sadly cut short.
I feel like Eli's breakdown during his play or destroying his car to try and get Clare back should definitely be on the list
Exactly! Eli crashing his hearse for clare was soo fucking dark. And then Clare hearing it on the phone 😞😞😞

Degrassi: The Next Generation was definitely my coming - of - age show.
Im on the degrassi marathon for 2 wks now. Season 5 now. The older degrassi is way better seasons 1 to 7!
Courtney B I think it just depends on the characters you grew up with. If we’re being honest, the characters of the newer seasons are just replicas of the older ones (ex: Clare is like almost a carbon copy of Emma except with a religious side instead of a environmental side) so if you didn’t grow up with them, you don’t care for them as much. Although I’ve watched every episode, I still prefer seasons 10-14 since I grew up with those characters but the older seasons were also really good but I didn’t have the same connection.
Yes for sure! like after the introduced the new kids and the OG's went off to college the show just got lame after that

I remember when JT died. I was crushed. I might’ve been a little too young to watch this show but I had such a crush on JT. I forgot how much I missed this show.
The scenes that traumatized me the most were JT’s death, Marco getting jumped, Adams death, Cams death, jimmy getting shot, and Spinner shaving his head.
Cams suicide was easily the worst one for me. Seeing Dallas's reaction of rage and everything. It was just heartbreaking.
Fiona's being beaten up by her boyfriend would get an honorable mention from me.
And me. Seeing her get thrown down the stairs was horrible.

Pretty much made dark and dramatic the same thing. There were much “darker” storylines left out of here. I agree emmas dad storyline was dark, but they should’ve included janes molestation storyline. That’s one of the darkest. Craig laughing at the funeral, Craig’s hotel breakdown, Eli crashing the car (if they’re gonna add Cam) Darcy’s online photo stalker, and so much more.
What about an earlier one like way earlier somebody got something thsr is dammm near u on your way out type of shiy
The actor who played Rick did a masterful job.
Two other dark moments or storylines were Eli’s in season 10. His girlfriend had died a year prior and he was struggling with depression and hoarding and almost died after crashing his car because he was so upset after Clare tried to break up with him. Actually if you think about it Eli in the season 11 was dark too. He was struggling with his meds and wanting to get Clare back. That speech he made during his play was is one of my favorite scenes of the show.
There’s so many dark plots that it’s hard to mention them all...
Emma having anorexia, Ali and her abusive French boyfriend (I don’t remember his name), Eli having bipolar and giving the sad monologue on stage that the audience believed to have been scripted but it was actually his meltdown...
Paige’s trail, Jimmy getting shot , Craig standing in front of a train, and JT dying had me breaking down in tears. Especially since I was a victim of sexual assault.
Very surprised that there was no mention of Zoe’s sexual assault video. The way that all played out was pretty dark

Kads Brezi ehhh that’s debatable. But since the list also included Cam’s suicide (a storyline that took place the season before Zoe’s sexual assault) I figured any storyline from Season 1-14 would be fair game 🙂

people just exhibit the similar Disney fans attitude when they grow older.. that "Disney stops being good when ended".. like pretty much every generation said that

am i the only person who thinks the 2 part episode “jane says” should have at least gotten an honorable mention? i mean she was molested by her father a little girl and kept it secret until eventually blocking it from her memory only for him to come back. she then has to horrifyingly put the pieces of the traumatic events together in her head while living in the same house as him and it becomes so bad for her that she gets wasted one night and another night leaves and sleeps on a park bench all the while her mom and brother want to be a big happy family again. she then remembered what had happened and had to tell her brother and mom in an attempt to save her young niece from her father. i don’t know but that sounds kinda dark to me.
I totally agree. As someone who's a survivor of CSA, that episode was so raw and real to me. And helped me realize that I'm not broken and that I will heal

I disagree, he's one of Degrassi's most realistic and significant characters. He's great not because he's bad but because of how real he is.

Correct me if i'm wrong but you're saying that boyfriend abusers, school shooters and mental health is not a common issue( because clearly Rick is suffering from some sort of mental health issue). I very much disagree with that. How many school shootings occurred in the U.S. in recent years? Also, even though it's not out in the open i'm sure many teenagers have been abused by their boyfriends either physically, emotionally or sexually. Myself being included. That is why i think Rick is a great and significant character. Because he helps bring awareness to these issues that many people ignore.
@@carolynharris4519 By "great character," they're referring to characters who are well-developed and/or last a long time on the show. Like Paige, for instance. She's a great character because in season 1, she starts off as a stereotypical mean girl, but then evolves into a kinder, more well-rounded and complex person with each season.

I agree and his fateful action were still felt long after he ended his life, like in Spinner's anxieties, for example and lets not forget about Jimmy Brooks.
Definitely one of the best shows around that time.

@@gabthang8 The show is essentially no longer continuing. Next Class did not get renewed by Netflix, all of the crew, including actors, directors, are no longer part of the show, and even the set was sold. There just has been no official announcement, but it's very unlikely the next class will continue.
@@Damnjackie288 Degrassi was always better as a cable show. Tuning in every Friday on "The N/Teen Nick" was my jam. Next Class, the show appeared to have lost its soul and creativity.
Emma’s online relationship in season 1 & her eating disorder should’ve been here, same w/ Liberty giving up her baby. Least in honorable mentions
I know the shooting and JT's death are classic dark moments, but Cam's suicide always shook me to my core. Bitter Sweet Symphony is such a cold, depressing, harrowing episode that makes me sob every time.

Back when I was in high school watching this show and now as I binge reruns on Pluto, I’m just amazed at the level of emotional intelligence all of the cast had when they portrayed their characters. The newer version just doesn’t have that gene sequoia😩

I'm happy this show crossed over to the states when I was younger. Though at the time (being the ignorant person I was) had no idea this was Canadian. I' ve never heard of Wasaga beach when Sean mentioned going to it and I was like "where the hell in America is this?" lmao

Definitely. There's a lot of dark moments that could be on there, such as: Wheels hitchhiking and almost getting molested, the creepy substitute teacher Mr. Colby, Shane's traumatic brain injury, Claude committing suicide, Dwayne becoming infected with HIV, Wheels' parents getting killed by a drunk driver, just to name a few.
I definitely agree. And Wheels driving drunk and Liz harassing Erica over her abortion. And Liz being molested as a child

I wish this included Next Class, only because there's one moment that would've made the list. Everyone who watched Degrassi NC agrees that Maya's depression and attempted suicide is among the darkest, most well-executed Degrassi moments.

Honestly, most of this show was pretty dark. That's why I liked it. It helped me better understand things I experienced and how to handle things around me.
Degrassi The Next Generation is the best out of the entire run of Degrassi, from the beginning in the late 70's till today. The storylines, acting, directing, were all on point. And thank you for making J.T's death #1. I still get emotional watching the clip.

not really i watched at a young age too because my sister used to watch it she got me into it then i started re watching all the seasons as a teen

I'm now 28 watching the show again after over a decade and man.. Going thru ptsd I never knew I had. I'm like 15 of these characters all in one.
I always found fionas alcoholism pretty jarring.some of the most uncomfortable scenes on that show.but this list is pretty accurate

A lot of these moments were very significant to me as a child watching this show on television. It made me realize I wasn’t alone. I was able to relate to a character who went through the same situation as I did.

J.T.’s death Cam’s death and Adam’s death hurt me on a spiritual level
How was Adams death only a mention? I haven't watched this show in years. Even find it annoying now. But that scene made me cry my damn eyes out. Along with Claire, Eli, and Holly J, he was my favorite character.
I’m currently in the middle of a rewatch and I’m on season 10 (all the episodes are on UA-cam). This show gets me emotional.
And I haven’t gotten to Cam’s Suicide yet. That event made me the most emotional during my first tenure watching the show.
Still kinda sad they have every season UP to 10 on the official channel in hd... hoping they add the rest soon ;-;

Eli and Clare finding Cam made the whole storyline even more impactful for me, two of my favourite characters of the whole show
being a degrassi junior high fan, seeing shane like that hurt me so bad. we really had to see him breakdown as a person and its heartbreaking.
I do find it funny that everyone knows as "drake" is someone I just think of as that kid on Degrassi.
