Fun fact: Bulma's name comes from Romaji "Buruma" that means Bloomers (a type of gym shorts worn by Japanese girls at school), so that's why she's kind of embarrassed about it.

Yeah, so many people think of Dragon Ball as a prequel series, but it's one long continuous series that got broken in half due to a marketing ploy by the anime studio. Skipping it is missing a huge part of the story. And it's great, too.

I was honestly so shocked when I heard the news because I've had this on my schedule for around 3 weeks. I was supposed to start reacting to it last Friday, but due to internet issues I postponed it to Sunday. I heard the news about his passing on Friday, so I would've been right in the middle of watching when I found out the news if it wasn't for the internet issues :((
life can be funny sometimes... I debated whether or not I should still start it so soon, but all the fans of the show seemed to think I should go ahead with my plans as they were. I am excited to keep watching this legendary show by the amazing Akira Toriyama 🙏

Me too. I grew up with the dub, since it is much more popular in the west, but i'm currently on my second watchthrough in jaapanese, and it's so much better. Especially the script. The voice acting in the english version is pretty good but the script has almost always been subpar.
Just rewatching Dragon Ball after the recent sad news. Shows still such a vibe and the old art style and inking methods give it such a nostalgic timeless feel. Goes to show the importance of solid artistic direction and how well it can stand up to the advancement of time.

Baby Goku is one of the cutest thing ever , I love the way his mouth shaped when you look from the side x'3
Goku is actually 12. He just looks younger because was still in that Dr Slump faze where he made a lot of his characters very short and stumpy
Here in Latam dragon ball is a classic, Goku has two voice actor in latam, one is Laura Torres for his child version ( and the child version of other two characters) and the second is Mario Castañeda for his adult version ( these is the one that people from latam associates Goku more).
if you noticed. Nami character was inspired by bulma on early stage. and ofc. we all know luffy character was inspired by early goku.

Goku inspired a lot of shonen protags, but having never watched Dragon Ball, the similarities between Bulma and Nami are crazy! Such a clear inspiration.
Well Luffy is also quite likely inspired by Sun Wukong and Goku being based on him is extremely obvious.

Actually, the Japanese reading of 孫悟空 is Son Goku and the Chinese reading is Sun Wukong.
Early versions of Dragon Ball include parodies of Journey to the West, but halfway through the story becomes completely independent.
First time I see someone noticing this similarity too, Nami was definitely very inspired by Bulma and if you take Nami's personality and combine it with Hyori's body you basically have a version of Bulma in One Piece haha
I've never been huge into the Dragon Ball series, but I do have a ton of nostalgia from it. Just seeing the art style reminds me of my childhood.
My brother and I actually had this show on DVD back in the day. It was the first anime we'd ever owned other than Spirited Away.

im so happy that i was born just at the right time to grow up watching Dragon Ball, everytime i watch the original Dragon ball it takes me back to when i was a kid watching it with my sister. The first Dragon Ball is my favourite because it has so many funny moments and its not to serious, even tho DBZ is probably better for most people and about dragon ball Super... yea i dont like to talk about Super. thanks for the reaction it's fun to watch someone watching it for the first time, also ur very easy on the eyes 😪

Falconer dub is iconic I don't know why'd you would think sub is better. In DBZ sub his voice doesn't match his body. Subbed Goku is a muscular man with the voice of a child it sounds weird.

Dragon ball is such a phenomenal series and even tho more anime has come out through the years, this series has just something that many others just don't and i just can't pinpoint what it is. Sometimes i think It might be just nostalgia but then i see newcomers to this series like you that still can enjoy it even tho it's an old show and it is just so nice.
I watched this series in tbe latin American Spanish dub since it's where I'm from and the show is really big here, so the ost and everything is soo nostalgic and iconic to me coz you're watching the Japanese version and those were kept the same in here 💜,glad you finally get to experience this anime!

Love that you're watching Dragonball! Still my favorite series. Was massively addicted 20 years ago, always fun to see new people getting into it.
That said, I do have one ask. I'm mainly watching on my phone and the subs are nearly unreadable. Extremely small and faint, making it a bit tougher to follow along. If you could blow them up a bit that'd be great. 🙏
"Dragon Ball Z" changed the anime world which starts after the original airing of dragon ball's 153 episodes or in the Dragon ball Manga at about chapter 195.

God it is so nice to find someone that's actually watching the Japanese version. That English version always grates on my nerves with its constant talking during parts that are silent in the Japanese version and script changes and all that.
And if this is your first time seeing the franchise, it is great that you're actually starting from the beginning instead of a third of the way through (which is where Z starts (which is what they rename it at the seventh saga in the anime. In the original comic it's just called Dragon Ball all the way through what the anime calls Dragon Ball and what the anime calls Z)).
And just so you know, Toriyama has practically nothing planned out for the story. He's always making up new stuff as it goes along.

This work is from about 40 years ago, so there may be expressions that seem impossible today, and the pacing is entirely different from the present. However, back then, society was more tolerant in almost all aspects. In Japan at that time, VCRs were not yet widely spread, and watching television broadcasts was the only option. However, most students adjusted their lives to match the broadcast times, and every Wednesday at 7 PM, they would sit in front of their TVs, captivated by the shows. One thing that can be said without a doubt is that Dragon Ball changed the world of manga and anime. Without Dragon Ball, many of today's anime would be quite different.
maybe more tolerant in Japan but definitely they were less tolerant here in the US, lol. The show had to be heavily censored in the US.

THANK GOD you’re watching this in Japanese because Dragon Ball is notorious for having such an incorrect dub and most westsern fans seem to always recommend people to watch the dubs even though they were never accurate to the manga or Japanese (which the dub actors have also gone on record stating they agree with)
So thank god you picked the Japanese version. You’ll be able to get the true Dragon Ball experience. Hopefully you have a blast with it

This is why I love Animaechan ♥️, I don't hate English Dub watchers for the record , but there's just something with Japanese Dub that makes it like have a "Original Feeling" and because its in its original language , 90% of the time , I will understand more of the Anime's "Important Details" about the Story or the Plot (90% because sometimes there's translation problems), and the voice acting seems natural not like in the English Dub where the tone of their voice just goes "Upward" every time they end their sentence , and it makes my face cringe when I hear it😂 .

I was late to loving Dragon Ball. Never watch it on my younger age in 2000s and got to see the DB Super in 2015 and I really hooked after that. And I manage look back at the OG and DBZ.
