  • Prof. Dr. Michael Custodis from the Department of Musicology Münster conducted two interviews with the guitarist and composer @SteveVaiHimself regarding his classic recordings in Finland. Now we want to take a look at his recording sessions, and we ask us the questions how does Steve Vai communicate his sound? How does he correct errors in the studio? And how does he manage to capture the perfect moment?
    Enjoy!
The interview was recorded on 20.08.2022 in Tampere, Finland.

It’s unfortunately telling that such great educational video has so few views. Still, thank you so much for your efforts, it will remain as a reference for aspiring composers of all ages for years to come!

That’s a very interesting video within an orchestra and the analysis of Steve Vai’s music. I understood the stuff with the explanations of the Passion and Warfare’s harmonics. 😍

Fascinating set of videos on a composer-process from Vai who can leverage stardom and rockstar wealth to show how composers do their work. Wish Vai were more 'literate' though in order to verbalize the many answers to your questions. Vai is always lacking in that regard.

By the way is the name supposed to mean the voice is now small and the voice is now still ("the still, small voice"), or is it supposed to mean the voice is continuing as small and previously was also small ("the still-small voice") ?

Disagree. Listen to his interviews with Rick Beato and Kip Wanger. He's articulate and very enlightening. Particularly loved the Kip one.

@@mosstet alright I watched part 1,2,3 of the kip winger interview with steve vai and 90% of it was metaphysical b.s. as typical for Vai. Only in part 3 is there any slightly deeper discussion of composition techniques and winger mentions using species counterpoint, to which steve vai says "species what? what's that?" OMFG. steve vai is a complete airhead when it comes to music theory. I cant comprehend what he learned at berklee school of music when Vai attended there but he sure did not learn anything fundamental about music. It is such a letdown to repeatedly be reminded that Vai has no clue what he is doing or writing. Vai should have studied music, actually studied music, and become musically literate, as I said originally, he is completely LACKING in that regard. In the winger interview, Vai mentions several times about his composition, that he was challenging himself to write "non-rhythmic counterpoint" . There is no such 'real' music theory term as that, "rhythmic counterpoint" or "non-rhythmic counterpoint", and to describe his technique that way, really carries very little meaning. Vai needs to go back to school (a real school, not Berklee) and become a literate musician.
As for a beato-vai interview, I am sure it is beato's typical nonsensical verbal diarrhea with his self-promoting garbage so don't want to watch that.
