I so adore the 80's Sci Fi aesthetic. This film and Alien could definitely take place in the same universe.
I love it too
It used many sets from Alien for it's production, so yeah, it could well be in that same time frame no doubt. Very good film.
@@Joesmovietalk wow I didnt know that - thanks
@@jeffjames3111No problem
I have had the same thought, and yeah i love the 80's Sci Fi aesthetic too.
RiP Sean Connery this was a underrated movie.
Definitely worth checking out, especially for the gritty 80's sci-fi environments and cinematography too 👍
Definitely worth checking out, especially for the gritty 80's sci-fi environments and cinematography too 👍
Outland looks like it could take place in the Alien universe.
I agree. I've often thought that Outland, Blade Runner, Alien, and Aliens all existed in the same universe.
Identical look
Alien Theory uploaded a video about that today .
Had MANY people from the original Alien working on it.
@@44excalibur Firefly and Serenity should be counted as well.
Love this movie, it has one of my favorite monologues, which is when in the racket ball court Connery explains to the nurse why he's not backing down. It's a very endearing moment for the character, it shows how ashamed he feels for the fact that everyone chose him because they think he's a coward who would given in to the corruption, and how much courage he's discovering he really has.
You wrote that so beautifully I was moved by your comment.
Ukkkipppä
Love how this movie is grounded in realism. At least they tried really hard to make a Space Western, look realistic. I like how everything looks worn out and used. Much like Alien and Star Wars before it.
It is really a clever remake of the classic western High Noon. The story is very much the same only it is set in outer space.
Apart from the fact that you wouldn't inflate and explode in zero atmosphere. 2001 got it right with the airlock scene.
As an 18 year old I don't enjoy the crap they are giving us today, I like these 80's movies instead, this Outland looks a hell like a lot like Alien. I'm gonna watch it
The Expanse
Outland was awesome!
It's good that coddled zoomers like you break the stereotype.
you'll love it its great amazing production design
Why mention your age ?.
great movie,really underrated
I remember this came out in 70mm and one of the movie poster tag lines was, "It's High Noon at the end of the universe" Cool flick
It's crazy how underrated this movie is and was back when it came out. I can see how this future is possible the way humans always exploit wherever we go.
Unfortunately, it was overshadowed by a blockbuster bonanza which was out at the same time: Raiders of the Lost Ark (the very first Indiana Jones movie). Also, Chariots of Fire, which won the Oscar for Best Picture.
Desmond Ryan at The Philadelphia Inquirer called it: "A brilliant sci-fi Western. In many ways, Hyams has made a film that is more frightening than Alien, because he surmises that space will change us very little and the real monsters we are liable to encounter will be in the next space suit."
This movie does something incredible to me. It's getting even better and better with every rewatch.
If you love Sci-Fi Movies with a dark and dirty Set-Design like Alien, Blade Runner and Moon 44... you have to watch this Movie!!! ♥️
I was enthralled when this came out, with so many classic sci-fi movies dropping at this time. Empire Strikes Back, Alien, Blade Runner, hell, even throw in Temple of Doom. Since back then, I could never understand why no one's ever heard of it.
how the hell is blade runner a classic? oh give over!!! I remember watching that a very long time ago and I thought it was a load of bollocks
I’m ashamed but literally just heard of it today and I loooove scifi movies. About to start it right now
@@David.L291 Blade Runner is incredible...... story, the sets, effects.... especially for the time!
This movie man.....Such an incredible experience. And the doctor had me in stitches with her dialogue. She's probably my favorite female character in any film ever. The people making strong female characters nowadays can learn a thing or two from watching this movie.
Frances Sternhagen and she won the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress
I had the biggest crush on her character when I saw it...
...still do
Underrated movie. I loved it. A must see for hard-core Syfi fans
40th anniversary today.
RIP Sean Connery.
This is more or less a remake of "High Noon", just in space. But I liked it.
One of many "Space Westerns". But quite good.
Yes, it didn't get much hype at the time, but it works well. Not too far- fetched technically, and Sean Connery well cast.
I wouldn't go that far so. There are certainly some resemblances, but it only really becomes high noon-ish about 2/3 into the movie. I think the story stands well enough on its own.
tuttt99 The most memorable being "Battle Beyond the stars". It even had Robert Vaughn as a space gunslinger. :-)
Yes...it is High Noon, in space. Sean Connery did brilliantly in this film. Peter Hyams directed this work. Worth a place in your collection!
Farewell Sir Sean Connery you were the first and the best James Bond. This flick was very underrated and was just as good the Alien film series were in my opinion. I love the commentary at the end. Said in the spirit of the Most Dangerous Game. "Man is the most dangerous animal of all." That just might always be true. Time will tell as it does with all things in life.
Great film and had a fantastic soundtrack.
This movie was great. It was basically 1880s Old West America in Space. Sean Connery made a great uncorruptible sheriff being the Hero taking on the assassin villains hired guns by the company to get him because he was messing with the bottom line or their company profits. Great movie. If you liked Old West or Spaghetti western movies you'll love this one.
I didn't really like this film but I did like Connery. He didn't feel like an invincible action hero. He felt like a hero but somewhat burned out.
This always reminded me of ALIEN. Same music, Technology and feel to it. You could almost imagine the freighter Nostromo docking at IO. ConAm being a similar corporation to Weyland Yutani. Brilliant movie.
It's set much earlier than Alien, so I think of it as a prequel.
RetroRobotRadio. I Absolutely agree. It actually does feel like a prequel. :-)
@@RetroRobotRadio would be cool too see some Seasgon androids in this movie
@@calvinprime maybe the corporation started using Androids as spys to stop after incidents like this.
@@RetroRobotRadio hmm i agree
Solid western in space, Sean C., amazing!
This movie deserves a sequel
Now that we've lost the great Sean Connery, I couldn't help but think of this relatively obscure movie for him and yet it was every bit as entertaining and thrilling as Alien. It was the first time I could actually disassociate Connery from Bond and he played the role well. And those exploding heads inside helmets! Dang!
Beautifully filmed, SUPERB cast and great story. The coolest thing is so few know this top movie exists.
Saun Connery was such a Handsome guy
RIP 🙏❤️
Not many people know this outspace version of High Noon, but it's great as an intense entertainment directed by an early Peter Hyams
Connery knows how to go beyond the limitation of his character
I really hope that someday, they bring out a Blu-Ray of this Film and showing us "Behind the scenes"-Footage of this Classic!
To me it's an underrated Film. It deserves better than just one single Disc with a lousy Trailer or Audio-Commentary
0:18 I always liked the preparation room where everyone got ready to go down below, looks very practical.
Watched it the other night. Never seen it. Definitely one of Sean Connerys best films! 👌
Everybody here in the comments are saying it was one of the most obscure Connery movies but in '81 the ad was always on tv in Canada. Saw it on tv later in '84. Not a classic but a pretty good movie. Was actually surprised how steeped in realism this was. A space-mining company on one of Jupiter's moons seemed plausible SF (in the not-too-distant future a la Blade Runner) back in the 80's, lol. 40 years later and we're no closer (like BR). Maybe in a 100 years.
This looks like a fun movie! Plus it's got Sean Connery and Peter Boyle in it!
Very cool movie. Slow paced, but still quite cool. I remember seeing these ads when I was a kid back in '81.
If it weren't for the fact that it was made by Warner Bros....this movie could've been a spin off of the ALIEN series. The corporate future certainly seems the same. And Jerry Goldsmith's score (which seems to start out just like ALIEN) fits this film well.
i'm really enjoying finding all of Peter Hyams films - After re-watching "Capricorn One" again recently (i do that every few years... it's a child-hood thing- this movie made a big impression on me when i was so young.. it creeped me out...probably the 1st time i realised our governments _would_ do that sort of thing), I started looking up all of his other movies! There's some real GEMS!
The slow deliberate pace was perfect. Trying to make a slam bang action film would have ruined it
@@weswolever7477 Completely agreed. I love movies like this, and Blade Runner/Blade Runner 2049. Slow burns, but well worth it when the action beat does kick in.
Beautiful, atmospheric movie. Definitely watch it if you love the aesthetic of 80's futurism such as in Alien. The third act is a bit cheesy and underwhelming, but the rest of the movie makes up for it.
R.I.P Sean Connery and Peter Boyle
And Francs Sternhagen
Great film. Should be shown on TV more often IMO.
I liked this movie a lot. It’s become one of my favorite films of all time. A future when mankind lives far beyond the Earth - their greatest enemy will likely still be themselves.
maybe one of the most underrated movie of this era... Not a single cheap scene, and a successful inspired "Alien" ambiance
The Expanse used got a lot of their ideas here.
Excellent film, definitely has that realistic look like the first ALIEN film - one of Sean Connery's most underrated film roles!
This trailer brings up memories. This is a cool movie. Basically, it is a space-adaption of the classic western "High Noon" but why not? The plot is good and it works in a nice dusty town of the old west on earth same as on a nice squalid mining station on a Jupiter moon a few millions kilometers away. And Sean Connery did a fine job as always.
This came out the year before I came out of me Ma and it's been a movie I've always wanted to watch, I finally got it and I'm going to watch it in VR tonight while I'm 'sitting' on a space station with Jupiter and some of it's moons in the background at the VR space station cinema or I might just watch it in my own VR cinema, either way I'm looking forward to it.
Masterpiece!
Hah!!! '...you're dealing with _grown-ups_ here!...'
Very underrated movie
Very good
This feels like an A L I E N film but without the Aliens.
R.I.P. Frances Sternhagen. You were wonderful in this movie!
the ultimate enemy....is still man
still sticks with me.
Connery at the time of this movie would have made a great Bayaz, the First of the Magi
Just picked this up on DVD so stoked to watch it tonight
I hope you enjoy it
2023 nearly and we cant get any films like this anymore or any of the 80s style films ie the last star fighter was a great adventure film set on earth and in space. There has to be young boys and girls sitting in some far outback writing great stories and fantastic ideas.. Hollywood has become lazy and dry of ideas 💡
At 2:21 I expected a classic Bond quip! Perhaps: "I always thought your ego was a little... over-inflated!"
Saw this movie over 40 years ago. Watched it again, recently, and notice a few things that I never noticed back then. First of all, the story takes place in the 21st century. We're well into the 21st century and there is no sign of us having a mining colony on the moons of Jupiter. Secondly, all the computer stuff like when Connery is checking things on the computer or the doctor is doing her analysis. It is very much 80s computer technology. It must have been hard for them to imagine back then what computers would be like in the 21st century. Also, the old school telephones.
An excellent space western. Vintage sci-fi.
"The Ultimate Enemy still... Man".
Woman, or possibly trans.
Still......true
In great horror and Sci FI the people are always the most dangerous
I saw this in the theaters when I was 11 and can’t forget that poor guys face expanding like a balloon. >pop!
Frances Sternhagen is my grandmother
she was great in this, watch the movie if you haven't!
Your grandma totally rocks.
I'm going to buy the blu ray just for her and Sean Connery. Both fantastic performances and a very underrated movie.
Loved her in The Hospital!
Oh wow she was great and I miss her very much.
2:24 oh yeaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh
One of the most amazing movies I saw as a kid. Thank you for it.
How have I never heard of this movie?????????
An underrated mostly unknown sci-fi gem
Always reminds me of "Serpico (1973)" meets "High Noon (1952)" in space.
High Noon in Space...
Love this movie.
And YES...
It's in the Alien universe.
great suspense movie - much better than the critics give it credit for-
a classic.
Frances Sternhagen is very good as the Doctor
VERY VERY UNDERATED........
This movie is not bad; all it needs is to be digitally remastered and space scenes and some tech scenes to be redone in CGI and it can go back in theaters.
Rest in Peace Sir Connery
Excellent film...
now i know where sigorony weaver took the inspiration for her part in the movie avatar, for the scientist part..
its the same behavior as the woman doctor on this outland movie
very good old sci-fi movie.
There's a alot of glorious beards in this movie
R.I.P Sean connery ❤️💕
I'll see Outland eventually.
I say see it soon its really good
High Noon in outer space. The definitive Space Western.
One Giant leap for mankind, One Tiny Click for what ever the hells left.
If that's HD, I'm the ghost of Sean Connery
I want this in HD
I think it is available now.
Rip, Sir Sean Connery
Connery looked good with the beard at 52 yrs old better than 42 in the Anderson tapes . The guy looked better with age .😂
This was a great film
RIP Sean Connery.
Why is it I never heard of this film till now... and it's the same vintage as me...
... man, I feel old yet happy all the same. Hate to be some git born in this day and age and have nothing cool to share the year with.
Ugh, I need an ad blocker
I don’t care what anyone says but I really miss Peter Hyams films. I know A Sound of Thunder was garbage but after seeing this trailer I really miss this guy making films
It's surprising that Sean was only 51 in this film
It's basically High Noon in space. Good flick.
RIP SEAN CONNERY
Sean RIP😢
R.I.P. Sir :(
Outland could be a prequel to The Expanse.
En colombia, vino con el titulo de, atmosfera cero, buen film..de los 80's..👍
I saw this movie 40 years ago. It is still truthful. Replace amphetamine with lithium for car batteries and you have the 21st green movement.
Robots won't need drugs.
Same universe as the Alien franchise...I would like to think!
40Years ago, yesterday❗
Feels like a dead space idea with unexplainable death in it for a while.
I thought that too I was thinking about Dead Space when watching it.
An outer space 'High Noon'
This looks good dang
What's up with the creepy music at the end. Sweet movie by the way.
A great double bill with Blade Runner
This is a great movie, as someone already commented "High Noon" in outer space. I've never cared for the horror genre, whether on earth or in space, so the "Alien" franchise didn't appeal at all. This is Sean Connery at his best.
