    You must have read my mind. I have tied flies for years without a bobbin holder. Now I know how to make one (was too cheap to buy one). Thanks Paul!

    For the people who don't have the materials I substituted them with big paper clips, a plastic tube lollipop stick, some decoration wire and glue, works all the same

    hey if any body needs a hair stacker your can take a pipe cutter or saw and cut the neck of a .308 bullet casing then chop the neck and the bottom of a .223 or 5.56 and put it inside the .308 and put tape at the top of the 223 where u want it to stop.

    the thread came free from my sister, the beads i found in draw, the q-tip or ear bud came out of the bathroom, the glue i paid £2.00 i don't know how many drops are in the tube so lets say i used £0.05, the spinner wire cost £0.25. It is still working a year on but i am think of making some improvements. Cheers

    Thank you, I was wondering where to buy one of them fly bobbins, didn't realize they were that easy to make

    Your righ,t i am cheap.But I find it more interesting that i have lost the urge to buy solutions. Last night i made a spinner blade and as I was cutting out the metal with snips I remembered watching a video of a machine that stamps out thousand of these blades per hour. What ever I make there will probably be a machine that can do it faster and maybe better, i fear the invention of the fully functioning sex robot. So i will keep my $1.69 and my bobbin holders, but thanks for the kind offer.

    I just made one using the wire from a large whisk I found for 25 cents at a garage sale. I used small hobby brass tubing for the shaft. Wrapped the shaft and arms in small copper wire and secured with CA glue. Works like a charm. About $1 to make it. Thanks again for the idea.

    Bobbins have jumped up to almost $30 apiece here in the states. I'm going to try your method. I think I'll use a little heavier steel stock and some tiny brass tubing with a plastic seed bead CA glued on one end to keep the brass tubing from cutting my thread. Thanks for posting.

    Metal. The light touch of fine grit sanding paper reduces of risk of sharp edges cutting tying thread. After you remove the ball point head, wild sharp edge appears.

  • @haakonjohansen

    cool! But what when you have to apply a lot of tension to the thread? Like when you're tying down deer hair etc, won't the soft tube from the q-tip bend alot?

    dont cut it, just bend the wire in half, then bend the point down so the tube sits flush, will make the whole deal stronger, if you get brass pipe you can solder also, you can also bend ears in instead of beads in a pinch...good vid though

    • @PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman
      @PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman  6 років тому

      yes your right, this was my second attempt i figured that out after making a few, i used brass pipe from the model shop and line it with ear bud tube and melt the ends so they roll up into a lip , i did go so far as putting a drag on one with a spring and washer , but I don't use them that often these days, i do not do well messing with fluff, thanks

      Altex lan with the money he saved on making his own bobbins he could buy more material or other things with the extra 5-10$. It's not called being poor, it's being frugal.
