Actually I’ve wanted to get started on UA-cam, wanted to use davinci resolve but could never find any decent tutorials on it, thanks for this. Going to even build my own davinci console in the coming weeks now I know how to use davinci.

I REALLY appreciate you making sure this is a "starting from ground 0" video! I find that too often, people will make a "getting started" video for something that was probably intended to be for someone literally just starting out but ends up being more for people who are already familiar with the basics. I've also found that sometimes, the most beginner-level questions are the hardest to find answers to lol. people who already have some experience never bother specifying and complete beginners probably become too scared to ask.

I can find loads of videos on how to learn DaVinci Resolve. Where you differ is you are an outstanding teacher, and you make the learning process fun. I truly appreciate you being here to teach DR. I made the switch since Filmora screwed me out of my "lifetime" license.
Wondershare. The new Adobe. Why am I not surprised? I'm glad you switched to Davinci Daniel, because Davinci Resolve is FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!. Yes there is a steep learning curve to it I won't lie, but it's worth taking and investing the time to learn.

I bought the lifetime license after watching one of your videos about a year ago. But after 6 months I switched to DV myself. But we have been conned by Filmora isn't there a legal avenue we can go down to get our money back ?

Sweet. Was working on a video for work. They asked what I was using, and I mentioned I'd switched to Resolve because of the BS fee you have to pay to keep getting just bug fixes after 12 months with Vegas Pro. The owner asked how much Studio was and when I told her, she told me to buy it for myself and expense it. So I ordered the Speed Editor with the free Resolve Studio license and paid the $100 difference. Now I've moved up to the Studio version with the speed editor. Only problem? Sooooo much to learn !
Watching this again 3 months later. After doing an hour or so of DaVinci Resolve learning every few days I know understand 90% of what is gone over in this video. Great video to come back to , helps to firm up some concepts .
I was introduced to you because of your Fillmore debacle, I subscribed because of your personality. I’m newish to editing and went straight to Davinci Resolve. So this video is going to be right up my alley.
This video may be the answer to my prayers, as I’m editing drone video using iMovie, and running into sluggish playback issues, making it impossible to do my work. I will download DaVinci, with all its advanced features, and see if it will “resolve” these issues. Thanks to the both of you for a very thorough beginner’s tutorial by a much qualified instructor. This is a superb intro to DaVinci Resolve. I’ve been trying to get my head around it for a few weeks now. This format of ‘student and teacher’ works very well for me. This is the first time I’ve ever watched a two and a half hour video on UA-cam from start to finish! Thank you so much.
A note about Performance and Proxies DR is a resourse hog - this is not bad design but simply because it is powerful! Many people will get performance issues. The simplest way to solve the problem is by using proxies. There are two ways to do this, but since DR 18, there is a separate Blackmagic Proxy Generator which is also in the free version. You can set that up to "watch" a folder. Anything you put in that folder, it will create a proxie in the BG. These smaller files run beautifully and have solved all my performance issues. However, in colour grading, it uses the original file, which is good!
I started editing videos in Filmora 3 years ago learning a lot from your videos. 1 year after i moved to davinci resolve . For the price is the best software for editing and effects. Now I started to learn blender, I’m happy to have saw your videos that permitted me enter to this beautiful world of video editing.
Subscribed. Looking forward to some good Resolve videos from you. 25:39 actually you can change the scaling on Resolve's UI now. Preference>User>Ui settings>UI display scale. 26:17 for proxies, I wouldn't recommend using optimized media anymore in 2022, Resolve now comes with a proxy generator which is by far the most seamless proxy workflow I've ever seen, it's a separate app and the free version also comes with it. Would highly recommend it to checkout instead of using proxy media. 43:43 you can actually do that without making a copy of the 16:9 timeline. In the cut page, on the top right corner, you can change the aspect ratio of the timeline. For more intuitively keyframing the positing, rotation and scale of anything in your timeline, you can use the onscreen widget, it's on the bottom of left corner of your viewer. And speaking of Fusion. It's a beast of it's own. It's been around the 80s and been used in thousands of movies and TVs shows and used to cost 6k before BM bought it and now it comes inside Reolve for free. That's insane. That's highly professional tool used to make movie quality VFX at your finger tips for free. The standalone app runs better on PC and your analogy was absolutely right Daniel, it's basically like a pipe stream and the footage is like water flowing lol. Nodes are industry standard for VFX, it has been since the 80s and still is with Nuke and Fusion. Casey Ferris has a great free course for Fusion. I love Reaper as well btw. My preferred DAW.

This is the editing software I've always used for pc. I looked at others including Filmora years ago and chose DaVinci. So far the free version has everything I've needed. I'm glad you've decided to do this video 👍

Well after watching the second half after my dinner last night i have to say that i learned a lot about the cut page, a page where i have always really skipped. what would be good is if you coud mark multiple in and out places then just drag the windows when it has gone through all the clips, maybe you can but not herd or seen it. (when in cut page in source view with the tap)
Thanks for segmenting the video into it's specific parts. On something this long it's great to be able to jump to the part you're interested it. IF POSSIBLE record and upload these sort of things in native resolution. The text is really difficult to read otherwise and is pretty important in this case.
Thanks for this video. It's helping me jump into a new program. My needs have always been met by Pinnacle Studio Ultimate - up until now. I record with OBS in an MKV format. I'm now recording different audio to dedicated tracks. As far as I can tell, Pinnacle only recognizes track 1. I've had to use Audacity to export the other tracks and then import them into Pinnacle Studio. DaVince, no problem. It simply sees them from the word go!
I hope you two will conmtinue to do collaboration videos on Davinci and help explain things like, we did this function in filmora, heres how we do it in davinci. that kind of thing would be most helpful for a lot of us who were still trying to improve our filmora skills to adapt over to Davinci. Dude, love the rocking music!!! You taught me how to use Filmora and I am so glad that you are helping us learn and make our channels better. I do have a question. While I was using Filmora, I could actually record my screen and Where I could actually record myself while playing... Is that offered thru DaVinci Resolve? Or at least record my screen, as I am a gaming channel. Or is there a recording program that I could use as well?
I used to be a Filmora lifetime user for a few years now. I had bought the license because it was a very handy tool to edit my dashcam videos, wich were the main thing on my channel then. Then V12 came and all this license debacle happened. I have recently deleted it from my system and am now crossing over to the DaVinci Resolve world. Not going through the hassle of mailing Wondershare, asking if they will please restore my account. Thank you for your videos. I've been learning a lot from them. keep it up.
I think if you are already working on a project it makes sense to open in the cut page, The media page is only important when creating a new project, because then you have to prepare your various clips and sound files.
You have more functionality in the edit page than the cut page, as I see it. Cut page is great just for roughing out your edit but has no fine tuning capabilities. Worlds great with the Speed Editor
@@Daniel_Batal Indeed, I work most directly in the edit page after I have finished cutting the right pieces in the media page with in and out! I have indeed learned a lot from Jay for which I am very grateful The Adobe programs became too expensive even though I still use Photoshop! In the meantime, I find Davinci Resolve very user-friendly, but still have a lot to learn, especially in fusion.
If your going to buy the Studio version if you can afford it, I would suggest buying it bundled with the Black Magic Speed Editor Keyboard. I really like it and you get a discount over the total price. Beware tho you can also get the speed editor keyboard without studio bundled. Which is what I did. I brought studio off someone that had the key spare after buying the speed editor and they already had studio.
Yes it is VERY MUCH worth the time to get over the learning curve. For 2 months in Feb,March my productivity went down doing the switch from adobe and I did take sales hit of 20% but April on my pructivity went up 25-30% at least as once you learn Reolve and fusion it is solid and almost magical. But I am coming from Adobe suite and I used Premeire and AE extensively. If your needs are simple maybe sticking with what you know is fine. If just simple cuts one camera editing no FX then I can understand someone not wanting to waste time changing apps.

I transitioned to Davinci Resolve from Sony (now Vegas) Movie Studio three years ago. I still kind of like Movie Studio for editing some projects, but Davinci is the first program I open for day to day video work. I Love Davinci's color grading. Their user interface is also laid out well.
I really wanted to try DaVinci, but there was an issue loading files from my media section onto the timeline when I tried it, and it became unusable for me :( I didn't known how to fix the issue, so am back to Filmora for now. I would like to figure it out and switch for the future, someday.
Welcome to resolve! I have been using it since v14. When My coworker and I went to DC for a training with Blackmagic, it was obvious they wanted to be known for more than the color grader of choice to a full blown suite. The Blackmagic reps and trainer were very accessible after the event and we still are in contact with them. Good luck and I know you will be finding more great tools after using it.
Daniel, the single biggest issue facing users/potential users of DaVinci Resolve is play back, with videos lagging, stuttering, etc. I have the latest version of DaVinci installed, and have watched and followed the instructions of countless videos explaining how to make videos play back smoothly but to no avail. I think you'd do a great service to users of DaVinci if you could do your research and make a video that explain how to REALLY achieve smooth play back. By the way, I have a Dell 15 3000 Inspiron with 16 GB RAM (upgraded) and intel i3 core. I presently use Filmora (version 11), with which I have edited quite a few videos in 4k with no play back issues. Once the videos are rendered in Filmora they play back smoothly often even with full resolution.
I found this channel a while ago but wasn’t too into editing back then. After the filmora incident happened, I found the channel again and am very glad that I did. I can now begin my editing journey with a good start and have a good content creator - editor relationship with my friend.

Daniel and @jaylippman, thank you so much for this video! It's given me enough confidence to try Resolve as a replacement for the software that shall not be named. I reckon it's going to be a challenge to get my head around, but now at least I have a solid foundation and know where to look if I get stuck. Also, you guys make a great team. 2½ hours is usually a big ask of my attention, but the two of you held it and I feel like the knowledge actually went in (apart from the Fusion bit, but the concept of nodes is a radical change from what I know anyway). Just stumbled on your previous video about the "lifetime subscription" issue and that was the first time I saw your channel. this being the second video I viewed, and its about learning resolve and I started happily laughing for obvious reasons.. Best of luck and have fun. I moved over from premiere, to FCPX to Resolve. I will tell you as a side note, Last year I dug into Fusion and im hooked. Its really not as scary as it looks. node based compositing is amazing and once you learn it youll never go back to layered compositing. What we get with the free version of Resolve blows me away, but I bought the studio version because even just the noise reduction alone is worth it. Happy New Year and keep on keeping on
Daniel this was FANTASTIC. Special thanks to Jay and you for doing this. I downloaded Resolve and plan to use it to edit a video for my UA-cam channel sometime next week, after Christmas. In fact I still need to shoot the video first but I think from what I’ve seen I can still do most of what I’ll need to do. I’m also planning on trying Final Cut Pro again if Apple lets me try it for a month again. Since I’ve been using iMovie it may be an easier transition for me but I’ll see.
Final Cut Pro is great on Mac. Lightning fast 4k edits. DaVinci is also built natively on Apple architecture and runs really fast on the new M1’s. (Filmora 11 isn’t, needs the Rosetta wrapper)
@@Daniel_Batal I’m leaning toward Final Cut Pro but before I commit to $300 I want to make sure it’s the best choice for me. Quite frankly your video today caused me to lean more in that direction. Since I watched it I found another UA-cam video that showed how to import iMovie videos into Final Cut Pro allowing the video clips to be fully editable which is fantastic.
I have started with Premiere, than switched to Final Cut once I got my iMac but when I got a Macbook M1 I again switched and this time for DaVinci Resolve. Did 2 short films in 4k, filmed with Blackmagic camera (amazing value) and edited from Blackmagic RAW. It worked wonders. I have FCX installed but never opened it again after diving into DVR. Oh, and my M1 is a MacBook Air, not even a Pro. I have the free version of DVR and I`ve tried the paid one on a friend`s and the only thing I might miss is some of the advanced color correction tools but for everything else, you don`t need to spend a dime. Also, as an important note - Blackmagic cameras are there right next to RED when it comes to quality and price is basically a tenth of it and it comes with a free license for DVR Studio (the paid version).
I downloaded Davinci Resolve tonight and all I can say is: where has this been all my life 😂 I've been making graphic arts and editing videos since 1995 and it's so simple to use yet overflowing with awesomeness! It's definitely my go-to for my UA-cam videos now!
I think you will all enjoy using Davinci Resolve. I have been using it for over a year and recently paid for the studio version I was so impressed by it. I get the feeling that you will be treated way better by Black Magic Design than some of you have been recently. @JayLippman is a great ambassador and is well worth subscribing to 👍

I will say I love Davinci Resolve, my only issue I had was when it went updated to version 16 or 17 they disabled the ability to use multi-gpu rendering/compiling unless you went to Studio. I feel that they are comfortable with having a true free version, and once you are comfortable and want further features you will buy a license. They also sell hardware that works in coordination with Resolve (color wheels, etc) that they sell along with their Black Magic cameras, that they have other income streams. So basically, this is a professional camera company, that wants people to have access to full featured software to use their hardware to its full potential. :) But that is just my thoughts on their reasoning.
Dan - a question if I may - DaVinci is exceptional editing software, but doesn't look like it can record. What do you use to record? OBS, Camtasia, or?
A noble effort Daniel. Thanks for letting us know about the Filmora license. Have to say, I would watch all of this except I can't see a thing your guest is demoing as the screen resolution is way, way too high. You should have him set his screen at HD resolution and then we can all see the buttons he's pushing and read the captions. A bit of an amateur mistake on his part. Still, you should have caught it. We all live and learn. Thanks again for posting.

It definitely feels scary at first, Pia. But once you start using it, suddenly the workflow is amazing. I'll be talking about it more and trying to show creators other options.
I also switched for Filmora to DR. I did mine before the upgrade issues. l still use it for things that DR can't do that l need, but just outgrew the software & needed more control over my project settings. I've seen both videos you guy have done & l have gotten a great deal of knowledge about what to do. Thank you so much for these & pleeease do more. Keep it up.
Great intro guys, but in the future can you set your screen at a lower resolution. Some of us are looking at this on our ipad, our 13 inches laptop, and we try to figure out where you clicked. Nice to see that there is no background music in your presention. Thank God.

Hi Daniel, I just installed DaVinci using your link. Is there a work around to upload my Filmora works in progress or mp4 files to DaVinci? DaVinci can't "see" those files on my computer. How can I get the two programs to "play together well" for this transition? BTW: Thanks for your great content. I was impressed by how you handled the recent Filmora issues. I was already considering switching before all this happened.

This would of been really good if he would of zoomed in like he said he was going to using his shortcut key, couldn't see a thing, it was all blurry. Hi guy's, love the content you all produce! Really enjoying watching through these tutorials. Your videos really resonate with me and you make it all look so simple and easy to understand! I am completely new to video editing but I chose Davinci for its endless capabilities. Definitely a steeper learning curve as you mentioned in the video but there are so many assets and tools built right into the suite, even for the free version, which is what I am using to try and start creating UA-cam videos from live streams I produce on Twitch. Although, I am definitely having a big struggle getting the software to work at all. My pc specs are well above the minimum system requirements and am not sure how to fix the issue. I've tried pulling in .mov and .mp4 files into the pool but as soon as I create a new timeline and add the clips into it the program freezes up and crashes. I realize that a lot of it has to do with render cache but even after I followed the steps in the video to correct and optimize my clips the problem still exists. I did notice when I open task manager I see that my RAM usage is really high(peaking from 75%-90% usage as if there was a RAM leak). Is there a particular file format or size that I should be using that works better? Is there a file size limit when adding files to media pool? Most of the video files average 2-4 hours of footage but have some files that run upwards of 12-14 hours but I need to edit them down which is a big reason I chose this software over others. Is there some additional steps that I need to be taking? If you all have any advice it would be greatly appreciated. Trying really hard not to get discouraged.

Resolve is within reach of hobbyists like me. I bought the Studio version after using the free edition for two versions. I’m delighted, but make extraordinary simple stuff
I started using Resolve after seeing Adobe go subscription and when FCP decided to make some changes that I didn't like. (I was actually using Final Cut Studio from way back when.) Resolve is a great NLE for even just making a short video to send to someone.
I am amazed you haven't taken a look at PowerDirector. It's sort of similar to Filmora (I have both), but PD is so much more intuitive and runs on far lesser hardware. I also use the free version of Davinci, but only for colorgrading as PD is a little weak there.
I actually have. I thought it was decent but I tend to run very advanced edits even within Filmora. I'm usually pushing Filmora harder than anyone which is why I find its faults in update performance before most users. PowerDirector is solid, no doubt. It just didn't feel like a giant step in any direction away from what Filmora does. But... great software option for anyone trying to find something that fits their workflow.
I tried PowerDirector but the tutorials and other resources to learn to use the program are terrible. I spent a good week trying to get spun up but just to tricky. Obviously I am not a pro editor but probably more like most folks in this area.

As for tutorials, there are 2 major UA-camrs that regularly publish them; PowerDirector University and The Sharper Turtle. I really cant understand how you can call PD tricky, I tried pretty much them all and PD is far and away the best because its simple to use and is higher intuitive and comes with a massive library of effects.
Hi Daniel, first thing first I have learned so many editing skills from your filmora videos and I have recently been going through all the videos on your channel about the lifetime filmora licenses. What I actually intend is the fact that I started using filmora because it was easy to use and had bundle effects which made my job easy. Now all this being said this means I am not good with software and that was the whole point of using filmora. I want to move to Davinci resolve and I would be learning from you because you make it easy to understand. My question is does davinci resolve have effects just like filmora, so that would help me ease up on learning and I could start right away or there is a learning curve?
I remember the day our Adobe rep came in and told us that while Adobe would grandfather their last pay in full suiteCS6? I believe. the future versions would be by subscription only. As a reseller we had to call our corporate customers and tell them the good news. Very few were pleased with the idea of paying a monthly or yearly fee. That was the start of subscriptions, (outside of the antivirus cos). Microsoft and others soon followed. Sorry to hear about Filmora but glad you are digging Divinci they are growing and not too difficult to pick up.
I downloaded DaVinci but it was too complicated and overwhelming for me so I purchased Filmora 11. I'd love to learn how to use da Vinci since Filmora made a huge horrible business practice, I don't trust them moving forward thank you ❤️. Happy holidays!
I used Power Director on my Android until you suggested resolve. Switching to Resolve is the switching from a Pinto to a Ferrari effect for me. That said, Resolve is an awesome Ferrari. This video has been a great help because the free version looks exactly like what you're working with here.
Yeah, they really do give away almost the entire software in the free version. You're mostly missing some advanced features, a larger library of transitions & effects and GPU acceleration. But the free version is NO joke
I think what should be emphasized is that the paid version extra features are primarily related to collaboration - meant for studios hiring a lot of people who simultaneously work on the same big project. If you're on your own, you'll never miss them. If you collaborate with 1-2 people in video editing, you can still do without. DaVinvi Resolve is an ad product for Blackmagic Design hardware: turn amateur into prosumer and once your crappy studio equipment ceases to fit your needs, you'll buy stuff that meshes seamlessly with software you're used to.
That's an excellent point and an excellent business strategy on their part. I will keep at DaVinci Resolve until I hit my head on the limitations a few times... then I'll happily pay for it. I believe they have AI stuff that would be prized by a single user as well. You sound like you know the program well. I wish they told us how to apply that color correction to all the other clips. I'm sure it must be easy. Do you know how?
@@thanksfernuthin You won't hit your head on Resolve limitations anytime soon, or in mid-range term. It's hardware they sell - pro cameras, editing consoles, audio equipment etc. And it works perfectly well with free Resolve. It's 3rd party hardware that gets fiddly if you want it to cooperate.

I REALLY appreciate you making sure this is a "starting from ground 0" video! I find that too often, people will make a "getting started" video for something that was probably intended to be for someone literally just starting out but ends up being more for people who are already familiar with the basics. I've also found that sometimes, the most beginner-level questions are the hardest to find answers to lol. people who already have some experience never bother specifying and complete beginners probably become too scared to ask.

I can find loads of videos on how to learn DaVinci Resolve. Where you differ is you are an outstanding teacher, and you make the learning process fun. I truly appreciate you being here to teach DR. I made the switch since Filmora screwed me out of my "lifetime" license.

Sweet. Was working on a video for work. They asked what I was using, and I mentioned I'd switched to Resolve because of the BS fee you have to pay to keep getting just bug fixes after 12 months with Vegas Pro. The owner asked how much Studio was and when I told her, she told me to buy it for myself and expense it. So I ordered the Speed Editor with the free Resolve Studio license and paid the $100 difference. Now I've moved up to the Studio version with the speed editor.
Only problem? Sooooo much to learn !

I was introduced to you because of your Fillmore debacle, I subscribed because of your personality. I’m newish to editing and went straight to Davinci Resolve. So this video is going to be right up my alley.
This video may be the answer to my prayers, as I’m editing drone video using iMovie, and running into sluggish playback issues, making it impossible to do my work.
I will download DaVinci, with all its advanced features, and see if it will “resolve” these issues.

This is a superb intro to DaVinci Resolve. I’ve been trying to get my head around it for a few weeks now. This format of ‘student and teacher’ works very well for me. This is the first time I’ve ever watched a two and a half hour video on UA-cam from start to finish! Thank you so much.
A note about Performance and Proxies
DR is a resourse hog - this is not bad design but simply because it is powerful! Many people will get performance issues. The simplest way to solve the problem is by using proxies. There are two ways to do this, but since DR 18, there is a separate Blackmagic Proxy Generator which is also in the free version.
You can set that up to "watch" a folder. Anything you put in that folder, it will create a proxie in the BG. These smaller files run beautifully and have solved all my performance issues. However, in colour grading, it uses the original file, which is good!
I started editing videos in Filmora 3 years ago learning a lot from your videos. 1 year after i moved to davinci resolve . For the price is the best software for editing and effects. Now I started to learn blender, I’m happy to have saw your videos that permitted me enter to this beautiful world of video editing.

25:39 actually you can change the scaling on Resolve's UI now. Preference>User>Ui settings>UI display scale.
26:17 for proxies, I wouldn't recommend using optimized media anymore in 2022, Resolve now comes with a proxy generator which is by far the most seamless proxy workflow I've ever seen, it's a separate app and the free version also comes with it. Would highly recommend it to checkout instead of using proxy media.
43:43 you can actually do that without making a copy of the 16:9 timeline. In the cut page, on the top right corner, you can change the aspect ratio of the timeline.
For more intuitively keyframing the positing, rotation and scale of anything in your timeline, you can use the onscreen widget, it's on the bottom of left corner of your viewer.
And speaking of Fusion. It's a beast of it's own. It's been around the 80s and been used in thousands of movies and TVs shows and used to cost 6k before BM bought it and now it comes inside Reolve for free. That's insane. That's highly professional tool used to make movie quality VFX at your finger tips for free. The standalone app runs better on PC and your analogy was absolutely right Daniel, it's basically like a pipe stream and the footage is like water flowing lol. Nodes are industry standard for VFX, it has been since the 80s and still is with Nuke and Fusion. Casey Ferris has a great free course for Fusion. I love Reaper as well btw. My preferred DAW.

Well after watching the second half after my dinner last night i have to say that i learned a lot about the cut page, a page where i have always really skipped. what would be good is if you coud mark multiple in and out places then just drag the windows when it has gone through all the clips, maybe you can but not herd or seen it. (when in cut page in source view with the tap)
Thanks for segmenting the video into it's specific parts. On something this long it's great to be able to jump to the part you're interested it. IF POSSIBLE record and upload these sort of things in native resolution. The text is really difficult to read otherwise and is pretty important in this case.
Thanks for this video. It's helping me jump into a new program. My needs have always been met by Pinnacle Studio Ultimate - up until now. I record with OBS in an MKV format. I'm now recording different audio to dedicated tracks. As far as I can tell, Pinnacle only recognizes track 1. I've had to use Audacity to export the other tracks and then import them into Pinnacle Studio. DaVince, no problem. It simply sees them from the word go!
Yeah, I've been really liking Resolve. The Fairlight page (which is basically their built-in DAW) is pretty decent.

I do have a question. While I was using Filmora, I could actually record my screen and Where I could actually record myself while playing... Is that offered thru DaVinci Resolve? Or at least record my screen, as I am a gaming channel. Or is there a recording program that I could use as well?
As far as I know (and I'm still new on this), Resolve does not have a screen recorder.

I used to be a Filmora lifetime user for a few years now. I had bought the license because it was a very handy tool to edit my dashcam videos, wich were the main thing on my channel then. Then V12 came and all this license debacle happened. I have recently deleted it from my system and am now crossing over to the DaVinci Resolve world. Not going through the hassle of mailing Wondershare, asking if they will please restore my account.

I think if you are already working on a project it makes sense to open in the cut page,
The media page is only important when creating a new project, because then you have to prepare your various clips and sound files.
You have more functionality in the edit page than the cut page, as I see it.
Cut page is great just for roughing out your edit but has no fine tuning capabilities.

The Adobe programs became too expensive even though I still use Photoshop!
In the meantime, I find Davinci Resolve very user-friendly, but still have a lot to learn, especially in fusion.
If your going to buy the Studio version if you can afford it, I would suggest buying it bundled with the Black Magic Speed Editor Keyboard. I really like it and you get a discount over the total price.
Beware tho you can also get the speed editor keyboard without studio bundled. Which is what I did. I brought studio off someone that had the key spare after buying the speed editor and they already had studio.

Yes it is VERY MUCH worth the time to get over the learning curve. For 2 months in Feb,March my productivity went down doing the switch from adobe and I did take sales hit of 20% but April on my pructivity went up 25-30% at least as once you learn Reolve and fusion it is solid and almost magical. But I am coming from Adobe suite and I used Premeire and AE extensively. If your needs are simple maybe sticking with what you know is fine. If just simple cuts one camera editing no FX then I can understand someone not wanting to waste time changing apps.

I transitioned to Davinci Resolve from Sony (now Vegas) Movie Studio three years ago. I still kind of like Movie Studio for editing some projects, but Davinci is the first program I open for day to day video work. I Love Davinci's color grading. Their user interface is also laid out well.
The color grading is definitely incredible. The Fusion page is insane. Just working my way through it now.

I really wanted to try DaVinci, but there was an issue loading files from my media section onto the timeline when I tried it, and it became unusable for me :( I didn't known how to fix the issue, so am back to Filmora for now. I would like to figure it out and switch for the future, someday.
Welcome to resolve! I have been using it since v14. When My coworker and I went to DC for a training with Blackmagic, it was obvious they wanted to be known for more than the color grader of choice to a full blown suite. The Blackmagic reps and trainer were very accessible after the event and we still are in contact with them. Good luck and I know you will be finding more great tools after using it.
Daniel, the single biggest issue facing users/potential users of DaVinci Resolve is play back, with videos lagging, stuttering, etc. I have the latest version of DaVinci installed, and have watched and followed the instructions of countless videos explaining how to make videos play back smoothly but to no avail. I think you'd do a great service to users of DaVinci if you could do your research and make a video that explain how to REALLY achieve smooth play back.
By the way, I have a Dell 15 3000 Inspiron with 16 GB RAM (upgraded) and intel i3 core. I presently use Filmora (version 11), with which I have edited quite a few videos in 4k with no play back issues. Once the videos are rendered in Filmora they play back smoothly often even with full resolution.
I found this channel a while ago but wasn’t too into editing back then. After the filmora incident happened, I found the channel again and am very glad that I did. I can now begin my editing journey with a good start and have a good content creator - editor relationship with my friend.

I reckon it's going to be a challenge to get my head around, but now at least I have a solid foundation and know where to look if I get stuck. Also, you guys make a great team. 2½ hours is usually a big ask of my attention, but the two of you held it and I feel like the knowledge actually went in (apart from the Fusion bit, but the concept of nodes is a radical change from what I know anyway). Just stumbled on your previous video about the "lifetime subscription" issue and that was the first time I saw your channel. this being the second video I viewed, and its about learning resolve and I started happily laughing for obvious reasons.. Best of luck and have fun. I moved over from premiere, to FCPX to Resolve. I will tell you as a side note, Last year I dug into Fusion and im hooked. Its really not as scary as it looks. node based compositing is amazing and once you learn it youll never go back to layered compositing. What we get with the free version of Resolve blows me away, but I bought the studio version because even just the noise reduction alone is worth it. Happy New Year and keep on keeping on

Daniel this was FANTASTIC. Special thanks to Jay and you for doing this. I downloaded Resolve and plan to use it to edit a video for my UA-cam channel sometime next week, after Christmas. In fact I still need to shoot the video first but I think from what I’ve seen I can still do most of what I’ll need to do.
I’m also planning on trying Final Cut Pro again if Apple lets me try it for a month again. Since I’ve been using iMovie it may be an easier transition for me but I’ll see.
Final Cut Pro is great on Mac. Lightning fast 4k edits.
DaVinci is also built natively on Apple architecture and runs really fast on the new M1’s. (Filmora 11 isn’t, needs the Rosetta wrapper)
@@Daniel_Batal I’m leaning toward Final Cut Pro but before I commit to $300 I want to make sure it’s the best choice for me. Quite frankly your video today caused me to lean more in that direction. Since I watched it I found another UA-cam video that showed how to import iMovie videos into Final Cut Pro allowing the video clips to be fully editable which is fantastic.
I have started with Premiere, than switched to Final Cut once I got my iMac but when I got a Macbook M1 I again switched and this time for DaVinci Resolve. Did 2 short films in 4k, filmed with Blackmagic camera (amazing value) and edited from Blackmagic RAW. It worked wonders. I have FCX installed but never opened it again after diving into DVR. Oh, and my M1 is a MacBook Air, not even a Pro. I have the free version of DVR and I`ve tried the paid one on a friend`s and the only thing I might miss is some of the advanced color correction tools but for everything else, you don`t need to spend a dime.
Also, as an important note - Blackmagic cameras are there right next to RED when it comes to quality and price is basically a tenth of it and it comes with a free license for DVR Studio (the paid version).
I downloaded Davinci Resolve tonight and all I can say is: where has this been all my life 😂 I've been making graphic arts and editing videos since 1995 and it's so simple to use yet overflowing with awesomeness! It's definitely my go-to for my UA-cam videos now!

I will say I love Davinci Resolve, my only issue I had was when it went updated to version 16 or 17 they disabled the ability to use multi-gpu rendering/compiling unless you went to Studio. I feel that they are comfortable with having a true free version, and once you are comfortable and want further features you will buy a license. They also sell hardware that works in coordination with Resolve (color wheels, etc) that they sell along with their Black Magic cameras, that they have other income streams. So basically, this is a professional camera company, that wants people to have access to full featured software to use their hardware to its full potential. :) But that is just my thoughts on their reasoning.
Dan - a question if I may - DaVinci is exceptional editing software, but doesn't look like it can record. What do you use to record? OBS, Camtasia, or?

A noble effort Daniel. Thanks for letting us know about the Filmora license. Have to say, I would watch all of this except I can't see a thing your guest is demoing as the screen resolution is way, way too high. You should have him set his screen at HD resolution and then we can all see the buttons he's pushing and read the captions. A bit of an amateur mistake on his part. Still, you should have caught it. We all live and learn. Thanks again for posting.

I also switched for Filmora to DR. I did mine before the upgrade issues. l still use it for things that DR can't do that l need, but just outgrew the software & needed more control over my project settings. Hi Daniel, I just installed DaVinci using your link. Is there a work around to upload my Filmora works in progress or mp4 files to DaVinci? DaVinci can't "see" those files on my computer. How can I get the two programs to "play together well" for this transition? BTW: Thanks for your great content. I was impressed by how you handled the recent Filmora issues. Definitely a steeper learning curve as you mentioned in the video but there are so many assets and tools built right into the suite, even for the free version, which is what I am using to try and start creating UA-cam videos from live streams I produce on Twitch. Although, I am definitely having a big struggle getting the software to work at all. My pc specs are well above the minimum system requirements and am not sure how to fix the issue. I've tried pulling in .mov and .mp4 files into the pool but as soon as I create a new timeline and add the clips into it the program freezes up and crashes. I realize that a lot of it has to do with render cache but even after I followed the steps in the video to correct and optimize my clips the problem still exists. I did notice when I open task manager I see that my RAM usage is really high(peaking from 75%-90% usage as if there was a RAM leak). Is there a particular file format or size that I should be using that works better? Is there a file size limit when adding files to media pool? Most of the video files average 2-4 hours of footage but have some files that run upwards of 12-14 hours but I need to edit them down which is a big reason I chose this software over others. Is there some additional steps that I need to be taking? If you all have any advice it would be greatly appreciated. Trying really hard not to get discouraged.

Resolve is within reach of hobbyists like me. I bought the Studio version after using the free edition for two versions. I’m delighted, but make extraordinary simple stuff

I started using Resolve after seeing Adobe go subscription and when FCP decided to make some changes that I didn't like. (I was actually using Final Cut Studio from way back when.) Resolve is a great NLE for even just making a short video to send to someone.
I am amazed you haven't taken a look at PowerDirector. It's sort of similar to Filmora (I have both), but PD is so much more intuitive and runs on far lesser hardware. I also use the free version of Davinci, but only for colorgrading as PD is a little weak there.
I actually have. I thought it was decent but I tend to run very advanced edits even within Filmora. I'm usually pushing Filmora harder than anyone which is why I find its faults in update performance before most users.
PowerDirector is solid, no doubt. It just didn't feel like a giant step in any direction away from what Filmora does.
But... great software option for anyone trying to find something that fits their workflow.
I tried PowerDirector but the tutorials and other resources to learn to use the program are terrible. I spent a good week trying to get spun up but just to tricky. Obviously I am not a pro editor but probably more like most folks in this area.
@@mountainbikingfortherestofus Im sorry you didn't get on with PowerDirector. As for tutorials, there are 2 major UA-camrs that regularly publish them; PowerDirector University and The Sharper Turtle. I really cant understand how you can call PD tricky, I tried pretty much them all and PD is far and away the best because its simple to use and is higher intuitive and comes with a massive library of effects.

Hi Daniel, first thing first I have learned so many editing skills from your filmora videos and I have recently been going through all the videos on your channel about the lifetime filmora licenses. What I actually intend is the fact that I started using filmora because it was easy to use and had bundle effects which made my job easy. Now all this being said this means I am not good with software and that was the whole point of using filmora. I want to move to Davinci resolve and I would be learning from you because you make it easy to understand. My question is does davinci resolve have effects just like filmora, so that would help me ease up on learning and I could start right away or there is a learning curve?

I remember the day our Adobe rep came in and told us that while Adobe would grandfather their last pay in full suiteCS6? I believe. the future versions would be by subscription only. As a reseller we had to call our corporate customers and tell them the good news. Very few were pleased with the idea of paying a monthly or yearly fee. That was the start of subscriptions, (outside of the antivirus cos). Microsoft and others soon followed. Sorry to hear about Filmora but glad you are digging Divinci they are growing and not too difficult to pick up.

I downloaded DaVinci but it was too complicated and overwhelming for me so I purchased Filmora 11. I'd love to learn how to use da Vinci since Filmora made a huge horrible business practice, I don't trust them moving forward thank you ❤️. Happy holidays!

I used Power Director on my Android until you suggested resolve.
Switching to Resolve is the switching from a Pinto to a Ferrari effect for me.
That said, Resolve is an awesome Ferrari.
This video has been a great help because the free version looks exactly like what you're working with here.
Yeah, they really do give away almost the entire software in the free version. You're mostly missing some advanced features, a larger library of transitions & effects and GPU acceleration. But the free version is NO joke

I think what should be emphasized is that the paid version extra features are primarily related to collaboration - meant for studios hiring a lot of people who simultaneously work on the same big project. If you're on your own, you'll never miss them. If you collaborate with 1-2 people in video editing, you can still do without.
DaVinvi Resolve is an ad product for Blackmagic Design hardware: turn amateur into prosumer and once your crappy studio equipment ceases to fit your needs, you'll buy stuff that meshes seamlessly with software you're used to.
That's an excellent point and an excellent business strategy on their part. I will keep at DaVinci Resolve until I hit my head on the limitations a few times... then I'll happily pay for it. I believe they have AI stuff that would be prized by a single user as well. You sound like you know the program well. I wish they told us how to apply that color correction to all the other clips. I'm sure it must be easy. Do you know how?
@@thanksfernuthin You won't hit your head on Resolve limitations anytime soon, or in mid-range term. It's hardware they sell - pro cameras, editing consoles, audio equipment etc. And it works perfectly well with free Resolve. It's 3rd party hardware that gets fiddly if you want it to cooperate.
