  • On today's episode of Breaking the Backlog, we take a look at the influential classic sci-fi shooter System Shock. One of the recognizable giants of first-person games, this title by Looking Glass Studios helped to define the modern FPS as we know it today. As it approaches its 30th anniversary and with the remake (supposedly) coming out this month, I wanted to see if the original game would still hold up in 2023!

Have you played System Shock before? Are you looking forward to the remake? Do you think the remake's actually gonna come out this month? Let me know!

System Shock was a game I heard about but never really looked into it. Seems like many people are finally giving this game a shot. This video may have pushed me to add this to my backlog

I will need to check out this remastered version you played. I played System Shock waaaaay back in the day at my cousin's house in the middle of the night and we were TERRIFIED by Shodan (big fan of Shodan). It definitely isn't a horror game, but it felt like it hahaha. I'm very excited for the remake and would love a new SS game in the future. Give me more lady AI villains!

Man, I think you hit the spot, this is one I'm really afraid to tackle out of fear of not liking it myself

Great review, though a few important notes:
    1. Only the last two levels don't have any conversion chambers. However, they litter you with first aid kits, meaning it just feels different.
    2. SS: EE most important addition aside from mouselook and resolution is picking up items by the middle mouse button HUGE TIMESAVER
    3. Oh, alt+backspace for reload, ctrl+backspace for reloading other ammo type

Thanks for this, good info to know! I swear there wasn't a conversion chamber on Floor 3, but it's very likely I missed it

You also always get a game over death in Beta Grove, whereas dying in the other groves will revive you back if you have Level 06 revival stations reactivated

System Shock was one I had in my sights as a 16 year old. Sadly, classic Cyberspace doesnt treat people who have a history of epilepsy very well. Remake is shaping up to fix that.

29 years later and hearing Shodan's voice still makes the hair on the back of my neck rise! In all my 46 years of gaming, she is still my favorite villain.

This game is sweet. I thought the same thing as you when I first played it, but actually ended up getting hooked. The control scheme and UI was unorthodox but in a good way, it added a challenge and felt fulfilling to be able to learn and understand them

Even in my 20s, this is still the most terrifying game I've ever played.
Also, remake was goated beyond belief

Glad I found your channel, Banjo is one of my favorite IPs from when I was a kid and I loved the way you broke down the whole series. I've still got plenty of your content to catch up on but it's been consistently great so far. Hope to see you soar to new heights this year!
