The is the follow up video to "Making a Deep Pipe Irrigator" ( • Making a Deep Pipe Irr... ) which shows you how to install this type of irrigation after the plants are in place.
What a handy tool to make. I couldn't find any galvanized pipe in my useful pile, but I will pick some up somewhere. These videos are so useful Nevin, thank you.
I use 2.5" or up to 4" pvc, three to four feet deep. I cover the top with some screen from a screendoor. I water regularily. My trees grew tap roots over 4 feet deep and into the pvc pipe. Explosive growth. Between the top and the bottom of the pipe, is a nutrient stack of top soil, leaves, grass clippings, mushroom compost, and a little 12-12-12.
@Nick-xu7gq no. You want to make the tree go all the way down with the tap root. If you drill holes, it will get some of that water earlier. For fresh planted trees, get a 5 gallon bucket. Drill a 1/16th hole in the bottom of the bucket along one side. Put that side against the trunk and fill the bucket to the max. It will get the 5 gallons of water over about 90 minutes
Great advice especially the shade cloth & pvc collar as opposed to the pvc cap. But to add to your setup you could insert long necked glass or plastc bottles with water in the exposed pvc pipe in times of drought. I have done this filling the inserted pvc pipe with gravel up to the length of the neck of the inserted bottle & this has enabled the plant to get a slow released deep root watering .
Alternative idea: One could install a well screen point with a Filter sock or Filter Sleeve covering the screen to keep fines (clays, sands, silts) from passing into your pipe. Install using a soil hand auger. Put a female slip by female NPT on the surface end of the well screen riser pipe. thread a male cap to seal. thread a male NPT by female hose thread coupler in when use, and thread your garden hose into this fitting to fill.
Hi, thanks for the video. My question deals with how far out from the center of the tree (lime, and lemon) should I place the deep pipe irrigator? I am planting young trees from a 2-3 gal pot.
You can ALSO use the same PVC pipe as a DRILL by simply making one end having sharp multiple teeth. That can easily be done with a Hack saw or a power saw. Also you can make the same pipe as an auger by using a RE-BAR through a hole in the upper end. It does work.
You should really buy a power planter it costs around a hundred bucks and would save you hours of hard digging. That said, do you think a vertical pipe like this one would bring enough water for a tree? I have an established fig tree that consistently doesn't have enough water. Thanks for your videos they are full of good ideas.
Also this device can be used NOT only for water but for fertilizers of all kinds..Esp: Phosphate and Potash which will help the roots grow much better and stronger

My pleasure, Jude! :-)

Thank you so much. Just what I needed. Planting trees today!
In Wyoming we've been having record WINDS, even for us. I need to deep water so they don't get knocked over.
Thank you 😊 great 👍 video 🇺🇸
My pleasure, glad you liked it! :-)
Many thanks for the video some good points that I will use!
Thanks! I'm glad to hear you have found it of use, it is always nice when someone lets you know the stuff you put out s appreciated! :-)

Hi Joe, I generally put them in around the dripline of the tree, so that is where the edge of the leaf coverage is.

Not in our soil, pretty hard clay, it needs the steel pipe to get it into the ground. In sandier soil maybe.....

These are more for use while establishing trees and shrubs :-) and, my pleasure!

Yes, that is true, provided it is not too concentrated.
Why would you have to run the pipe that deep when the roots aren’t that deep in the ground?
How do you prevent dirt clogging the holes on the pipe?
Hasn't been a problem so far!
