- In this video, I talk about how band members get paid in general. Of course, I can only speak for myself based on my own experiences in the matter.
I also discuss an ongoing issue among bands and its members, specifically in the matter of finance. I give my friend as an example of this matter.
Pretty much, the theme of this video is to address the somehow "taboo" issue of money and how it must be divided among band members and how addressing this issue from the get go can contribute to a more harmonious professional relationship!

Same as Arnel Pineda, He gets an equal cut from the journey band even he's just a replacement. That's how they respect the presence of each other on the band.

Ganda nung concept niyo ng TF distribution. I was part of an amateur cover band before and it was very different because of the manager (rhythm section gets percentage of the entire fee ---- but this is for a different discussion lmao)

THANK YOU this video helped my mood! :D I totally agree. If everyone contribute to the band it should be equally split between members. I have heard that drummers an bassists ain't getting paid the same way which I don't really understand. Of course I can't speak for others but I practice A LOT to maintain a tight beat and keep the speed up which is required in the genre I play. A live show wouldn't be the same if missing any of the members :)
Just watch and hear it now. this is a very content specially if other bands are still struggling of dividing the pie.

I think it’s fine. It’s not like he’s missing just a couple of gigs or something. He migrated to another country so there’s that higher level of uncertainty on when he can play with the band.

I have a band where I play bass and sing and post our shows on social media get 99% of the gigs and not only that but i am also haul the PA when the location doesnt have one. Typical two wedge monitors, two mains mixer and power amp, mic stands, mics all that stuff.
Yea its very tuff cause I also haul my bass rig as well. I arrive early to start setting up all the stuff.
How would you recommend splitting payment if it was you?
I honestly hate dragging so much stuff its very stressful but I do it so the show happens. Last gig the total amount made was 350 with a three peice band. Each guy got 100 but i set a side $50 extra for PA use.
Wish i can split up evenly but it seems not fair since I have all that extra work. Advise would be appreciated.

Here’s how I would do it… I would go by percentage assignment so that regardless of dollar amount, everyone knows where the money is going.
Off the top, I would take out a 10% finders fee for finding the gigs. I would give an equal share for the PA system (which would cover acquisition of the gear as well as the labor cost and storage cost of it).

If i have a band, i would suggest we paid like an employee. Everyone involve has a fixed salary. For examole, every member gets 100k per month. Then minus the sss, philhealth, pag ibig, etc. Then the rest of the money from gigs will be the band fund. And just in case a member has to leave the band, he will get his share from the fund
That’s an awesome idea! We just went the route of “board members” then from our “equal shares”, we were free to hire our own employees.

Ganyan ang ginawa ng bandang Queen; it doesnt matter who wrote the most hit songs basta everybody gets an equal share at yung music catalogs nila ay pag aari ng lahat and the royalties are equally divided kaya sa huli ay walang demandahan; unlike Spandau Ballet na nag karoon ng lawsuit dahil hindi inayos mabuti ng mag split-up yung grupo

Question, what if we're still an up and coming band starting to make a name for ourselves? For example prods and organizers who haven't heard of us yet invites us to an event (or rather us and we haven't made a name yet in the scene? Should we be able to ask for a fee, or do we first show what we got before we ask for monetary payments? Thank you!

Its a team system thats good.... but i quit (wordly) Band when i was young nkita ko hirap at laging away sa banda... how ever i see ur band r sticking together... But 4me i ( work alone) lol famous word sa movie.. i continued my Engineering work abroad now in US... & still play but in Church's Praise & Worship team...

Omg! Introvoys! I watched your concerts that was when I was in University! Kahit san kayo sunod kami! My gosh ang allowance kasama ang band nyo s budget, Ilang lunch at dinner ang tinipid para s tickets lol...no regrets! I still listen to all your songs and I still have the photos way back when... magazines and posters my gosh Bakit ganun noon, nothing beats the classic
I think if the member is absent he or she will not get paid cz her share will go to the sessionist..and of course the vocal parts or back up parts that this absent member was doing , in his or her absence the other members will make an effort to do..
That’s a pretty good point. However, my issue here is beyond the session rate and the efforts done by the other band members... in the absence of backing tracks, where does the rest of the absentee band member’s share go?
He must incur all expenses resulting from his absence but he must also take home whatever is left from his share of TF.

Every band is different. Parokya has been in the industry for a long time and it works for them on the system that they are doing. Buwi agrees to that process so it’s fair game.
IMO, The absent bandmember who is absent, for whatever reason, should still have his cut. I remember this thing happened with one american bandi will no longer say which one, one guy quit the band. But since he was the founding member of that band, he asked that he should be given a cut from the earnings the band is making. They even went to court and the judge ruled that he be given a royalty since they were still using the band name wherein he was one of those who formed it
AMEN!!!! In the case of my friend, he's still part of the band. Sabi ko nga... if the rest of the band are not keen on giving him his share... they should just kick him out. Di nila magawa because it'll make them all look bad.

as an amateur SKA band composed of 10 members + roadies + rental van, only the van driver always gets the big cut in every gig..

Yes he or she should be compensated. Remember, there is an associated cost to booking a band. You have to spend for gas or commute, prepaid phone card or phone bill, dinner, etc.
Or you guys could encourage each other by giving whoever books the band a 10% commission. Then, divide the rest of the money EQUALLY after all the expense.

I am the only one kasi who is a full time with this kind of work,all of my bandmates have their own full time jobs in their line of field.. I was the only most of the time answering inquiries on our fb,text, email, etc.. My wife was our manager before but due to some reasons she quits and so no one entertains our client till I decided to take over her job... some of the members kasi thinks its unfair since I am part of the group... Can you please give me a piece of advice how to handle this problem? God Bless
Jeffrey Joaquin if you are the designated manager of the band, you should get a commission from whatever you book for the band... minimum of 10% up as high as you agree upon.
Now, since money will always be a sensitive topic, make sure you are up front and transparent about ALL TRANSACTIONS involving your band and band mates.

Yes. Only because someone wasn’t honest about it. Otherwise, it shoulda have to be an issue. The bottom line is that everyone should agree on how the money will be divided so that there are no ill feelings and miscommunication in the future.
