I suspect there was an issue on the line via Guildford, so they had to divert the service via Basingstoke, only calling at the most key stations along the way.
Exactly, trains via Guildford overtake the ones via Basingstoke, but the longer route is there to serve the line through Hedge End and Botley, and give them and Fareham, Portchester and Cosham a direct service to Waterloo
Indeed, although I guess it could be convenient as a backup. Its generally not one of those services that particualrly intended to be travelled from end to end, simply because theres a better alternative.

I live on the Portsmouth line and I wouldn't recommend the Portsmouth harbour via Basingstoke go via Guildford faster and better..
