Chronicles is underrated, and maybe rightfully so for its context at the time. But I still love it, it's still a fun set of tomb raider romps. Maybe it's more akin to a very good TRLE custom level editor game, which is why it seems so sub-par for a mainline release
Never thought a Tomb Raider game would have a lot of references to some of Arnold Schwarzenegger's movies, but that was still pretty cool to know about as a Arnold fan. Love all the history of the areas in the game too. Can't wait for more Tomb Raider videos.
the railgun effect is a fairly common trope in the quake series aswell. with the whole blue energy corkscrew the natla magnums are the same model in the first game, as they have from memory one blue and one red N on the backs of the slides.
I love when you bring Tomb Raider to the channel, your unique way of bringing curiosities, facts and easter eggs usher amazing details on the game. Tomb Raider is my favorite franchise from the video games and along with Resident Evil, these were the first two experiences I had with PlayStation in the fifth generation, I was totally hooked up and fell in love after only had played on SNES and Sega Genesis. Chronicles is the easiest game on the classic series and it lacks the enchantment the previous entries had, but turn out being a good game, just the least inspired.
I love it when Ink Ribbon takes the time to compile these fascinating secrets, lore and Easter egg TR videos. They make me appreciate Tomb Raider as a whole even more than I used to. Especially when I find out all this stuff I didn't know about the game years later. And the fact that half of the games little Easter eggs are based on real life stuff or in movies makes me love it more. Can we give this man a round of applause for doing this extensive research on this and making interesting videos for us? 👏
I love the Ireland section, it's so special and immersive. I understand that some might feel a not-tomb-raider setting, but once you accept that it's not what you expected, you may enjoy it. This chapter not only had its unique atmosphere and folklore, but also its own videogame genre. It's not really a platformer, nor an action game, it's more like a pure puzzle solving game. In fact these levels could be easily converted into a traditional point and click gameplay, in which you simply move from one screen to another and interact with objects and think of relevant item associations to make the story progress. It feels like the intersection of Tomb Raider and Monkey Island.
Chronicles is actually my favourite game. It was the first TR game i actually owned (on Dreamcast!) I had played bits of the others at my friend's growing up but didnt play it long enough to really get into it. So when I got Chronicles I absolutely loved it. Very nostalgic for me!🤩
I've absorbed so much classic TR over the years and it genuinely surprised me how of the info in this vid I hadn't already heard! In particular to the FMVs and some of the dates! Fantastic work loved it! Ps I petted my dog for you
In my old Chronicles CD case from back in the days was the level editor included. That one had a demo level where you start inside a pyramid (it shows pretty much all the stuff you can do with the editor). Goal of the level was to make it out of the pyramid and i always read that level as how Lara got out of TR4 alive.
I loved Chronicles; it really was the piece that tied everything together with classic Lara. It also had some of the greatest comedic moments. I'll never not laugh at Zip saying: "Lara! Lara! You broke??? Ahh, you ain't dead is you?!"
It's been 3 years since we came across your channel due to TR and I'm so glad we did.🥰 Your videos & livestreams are always fun to watch and every year we are looking forward to Tomb Raider Month. 🥰 Can't wait to watch you streaming the remasters😍 Kind regards from your special fans from Germany & of course also greetings to your cat😉
One of my favourite TR’s! I have such good memories of playing this one. Also the Ireland levels were so spooky! The hanging tree…the demon horseman and that hideous mermaid thing used to give me the creeps 😂
I have a vague memory of zip having some unused audio in the game. one of them was him freaking out and yelling "close the door! Close the door quickly! Close the door quickly!" I found this by going through the audio on my pc as a kid lol
I think this one has to be my favourite. Mainly because it was the first one I played through properly and I just loved the Ireland levels. I'm curious if anyone had the same issue though: first time around, back when you couldn't just go to UA-cam or Google solutions and had to go out and buy game guide books etc, I got to the old windmill and encountered the water demon but didn't realise you just had to swim a little lower to avoid him and get the shiny coin to use as a trap later. I would always swim towards him and trigger the cut scene where he winds you and you have to dart to the surface for air. I swear I spend so long exploring every nook and cranny of the whole area trying to find something I'd missed 😅
I had the same issue and I played with parents so three people couldn't figure it out. My most hated level to this day. Followed by the one where you have to upgrade the bike in TLR.
Love this one too man, beat it with my buddy in one night when I was a kid, good memories, it’s fun to see the love for this one, it’s busted but awesome
Chronicles is such a unique game in the franchise for a lot of different reasons, some good, some bad. Being the last one on the original platform before PS2, being split into separate stand alone levels, introducing new moves and weapons that would never be seen or used again in the franchise. It has a kind of melancholy feel to it; it was the end of an era for Tomb Raider on PS1 and to be honest Lara was still ‘missing’ in this game. We only saw flashbacks of her in old stories while people reminisced about her - kind of how fans did in real life missing when the games were good and less stale for ideas. It’s also hard to look back and think anyone involved enjoyed making this game when all they wanted was for her to go away. So many developers over the years have admitted that Chronicles wasn’t given any effort or much time resulting in glitchy textures, half empty levels where Lara is basically alone going from A to B and a very confusing timeline on all the stories and where they should fit. Even the ending was left open and never picked up on or corrected in Angel Of Darkness.
Really fascinating to hear the Tintin influence on this game - fuels my theory (that I've never seen confirmed anywhere but would LOVE to know) that the symbol of the Fiamma Nera in TR2 is a homage to the symbol of the Kih-Oskh brotherhood from a couple of Tintin books (Blue Lotus and Cigars of the Pharaoh)
I like it too. Guess the hate has something to do with the episodic, incoherent storyline, the lack of vehicles to control (save for the diving suit), lots of bugs, difficulty level, loading times and the overall shortness of the game.
The TRLE community was seriously one of the most fantastic things to come out of this franchise, and I wish other developers would have taken a cue from it. People *want* to keep their favorite games alive, just for the love of it. Modding communities are proof of that.
It's amazing the game plays as well as it does, you can really feel how strung out and tired the devs have gotten by this point. Really wish they'd been able to do something like putting a new team onto Chronicles while the veteran devs worked on a survival horror, there were genuinely good ideas in the Black Isle levels.
Didn't they change most of the team for each game before that? The only crew member shared between TR1 and 3 was the composer but I am not sure how many people switched after.
I have one of the journals they mailed out, I thought I was sent it as I was registered with Sony (They sent me all sorts of stuff, like Christmas wrapping paper with Tags, Advets for games on X-ray sheets, Cardboard Masks. a Rorschach Test, And yes I still have it all lol). This is the first time I've seen any refernce to it aside from the one I have.
I've just looked it out and there's more than I remembered, there's a letter and photo from Lara as well as the Journal pages, There's also a postcard to enter a competition to win the 'Scarab of Darkness' by answering question's based on the journal pages, I am so curious as to what it was. There arn't any pictures of it and again I can't find any reference to it anywhere.
Now I understand why they delayed the trilogy remaster for February 14. I assumed it was so they can have a cheeky Valentine's Day marketing campaign. Nope it's just Lara's Birthday haha. Still clever release date.😆
never understood the hate for this game. its maybe not the BEST but it was fun for me. it's like a fun bunch of add-on levels. like custom fan-made stuff which can be incredibly entertaining. here's hoping they remaster this and revelations.
One thing I keep wondering after so many years: you mention in the video that the couple we see at the beginning at Lara's funeral are her parents, but they died years ago, at least according to classic Tomb Raider lore (until Square Enix butchered it with the survivor trilogy). I know the developers were exhausted to say the least but this is a big discontinuity error.
As far as I know, her parents were never dead in the classic timeline. All we know about them is that they disowned her, that's it. Iirc they are dead in the legend trilogy tho
They disowned her in the classic era, they didn't die. That only becomes a thing in the first movie and then CD used that as an idea to establish their story in LAU ~
@@danielmastroianni5772 Yeah. The rich explorer daddy issues lara, is the Hollywood/Angelina Jolie and the legend ones. The original Lara, was just a rebel that stood to her parents and decided to carve her own adrenaline filled path of tomb raiding. Totally different characters
