Well done mate good video. You are the only person who has actually read up before doing the video. Good that somebody who is making the video knows the real history of this magical and mystical place for a change. I generally have to correct alot of people and tell them the real story. There were tales of drunken debouchery and revels at shindigs that the owners hosted at the hall that used to go one throughout the night. There are 5 springs that fed the well which is the rectangular pool at the rear of the wellhouse. The wellhouse itself may very well have once been used as a baptistry. The water that flows through is said to have healing properties especially for people who have eye ailments. Pilgrims used to stop at this place and rest when on their journey to Whalley Abbey. The water that used to pour out of the mouth of the lions head inside the wellhouse flowed into a cistern at each side. There is a narrow channel down the centre where the water flows also, with stone seating at either side. There may once have been stained glass in the windows at one stage. The age of the spring could be as old as time itself and could well have once had a holy dedication (possibly St Leonard) that has been lost in time. The place is said to be haunted by a spirit of a kneeling cavalier praying for the end of a battle, and many other spirits. There is a story that the son of one of the many owners of the hall, fell in love with a peasant girl in the village. The father was not pleased and locked his son in the wellhouse over night. He was visited by many spirits and by morning the son had gone mad. Another story is a person sheltering from heavy snow in 1920s was chased into the woods in the dark of night by a spectre. As entertaining as these stories are to listen to, I dont think there are any malevolent spirits present here today. I believe there will be spirits here, but i think they are nothing but peaceful just like this amazing little place. All the best from lancashire.

Thanks. I wish I could have picked your brains before I did the video. Makes me want to go over again. I live in Coppull and my mum lives in Bolton. Means I go through Belmont on my way. Might turn left instead of right as I come over from Rivi on Friday for another wander.

I’ve just realised that Hollinshead Hall was built in the same year that America gained independence.
