The Oyo Empire was a Yoruba empire of what is today Benin and Western Nigeria (including Southwest zone and the western half of Northcentral zone). The old Oyo 'empire' was the largest and best-known of the Yoruba kingdoms. Located in the savannah below the bend of the river Niger in the Bussa-Jebba.

Madam, with sincerely , I enjoy and appreciate what you do. As an historian, you know well that there were different existing kingdoms (Ijebu, Ijesa, Ekiti etc, etc). The Oyos were often called Yariba by traders from the Sahel. As an historian, you also know how and why the name Yoruba was generalised by most of these kingdom pre almagamation of Nigeria and the individual roles of HRH Ladigbolu Alaafin of Oyo, HRH Sultan of Sokoto, HRH Emir of Kano, HRH Henshaw (Obong of Calabar and HRH Abubakar Shehu of Borno in the 1914 almagamation treaty and how the treaty was signed.
Ma, you were not correct when you said Aarre Ona Kakanfo was the head of the Yoruba army. Correction: The Bashorun (Prime Minister) was the head of the Oyo/Yoruba army (larger) whle the Aree ona Kakanfo was the head of the Alaafin's esos' (Alaafins smaller personal army) who was truly a small Chief, equivalent to the rank of a Baale. While i agree with you that the title Aare Ona Kakanfo is higly politized today, you were very emotional immediately you digressed from the script and spoke about the Alaafin and the selection of Aare ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland. This is the 14th Kakanfo, while HIM, Oba Adeyemi II (late) appointed Bashorun MKO and Otunba Ganiyu Adam during his lifetime. Its not correct to say "maybe the present Alaafin wants to arrogate to his office powers to which he is not traditionally entitled or he has simply not taken the time to study the history of his position". You said that, " you are surprised why, the Alaafin has been met with little of no resistance"? Madam, suddenly you have forgotten that every Alaafin is a warrior king that sits on the throne of Sango?
Professor (Madam), once the Oyomesi selects a new Alaafin and he is initiated, can you may lead all Yoruba kings and nobles to challenge the new Alaafin on this Kakanfo title or to lead us to approach the Nigeria Court? That is the reason for our silence.
On what is known as Lagos State today, you may recall that the Ibadan war camp (warriors) not only defended Ota from aggressors, they defended the Awori towards the coast and beyond to Popo kingdom while they collected tributes for the Alaafin. If not, the Yoruba could have had less land territory as of today.
My take on this: Today Oyo is not superior and should not be superior to any other Yoruba kingdom. We are all one people, from ile-ife. However, history should not be narrated with emotions. Keep up your good work and soar higher ❤❤.

Really i am an American Yoruba descendant but u have both Roots in Nigeria and Kenya as well as Ghana Congo and sierra Leone as well as north Africa. I always wondered exactly how i have Kenya and distinct Maasai ancestry. I've seen Ghanaian s with Kenyan ancestry they never knew about, and i do know that people were taken from east Africa as well. But i really would love to know if my ancestry is from the slave trade or is it a more deep relationship before the arrival of Europeans. I've also wondered if i was possibly Luo or Kikuyu but i have no idea of where to even start!

Thank you very much ma 😊 for this beautiful story. I personally think our King's nowadays no nothing about the seat they occupied they think they're unquestionable and so therefore do whatever they want. And the people of the town or city they ruling over do not bother to question their authority. My grandma(may her soul continue to rest in power)used to tell me a story of how old women would go to the King's Palace naked to protest their concerns if he's getting power drunk. They do not cowardly leave him alone and say he has power over everything like we do today.

Amazing information providing clarity of our heritage. What might be seen as the misuse/politicisation of the Arae Unokakanfo might just be an evolution of the position, like traditional titles, the world over. However, a useful situation would be to have some of these titles written into the constitution, as traditional titles are under the offices of state governors looking for votes, so is open to abuse.

We are Tatarian. We builtMapo ( Imo Opo Elere) Hall in Oyo and Iseyin.
I am a seed of the Tarta Ancestry.
We hailed from the Atlantic Eons of years ago. This history is too recent to define us. Oodua is not the same as Oduduwa. These recent historical accounts should be discarded.

You're just saying rubbish. Aare ona kakanfo is the head of army of Yoruba land ( said by Alaafin when installing Gani Adams), why Basorun of oyo is the the head of all yoruba chiefs and oyo Army only. Basorun Ayoola himself said it is only Alaafin he can prostrate for he can't prostrate for any other king even ooni, as he is the head of all yoruba chiefs. That's the evidence
I'm a crown prince of oyo
So you can argue with me
      Whatever
And another rubbish you said was.....
      Oyo is not superior 😂😂😂
      That got me Laughing
Oyo will ever be the greatest kingdom in Africa
Alaafin was like the president during colonialism
All colonial master use to regard him as the head of all the land
They use to bow and prostrate to him

Ancient Yoruba are Ibo tribe, when Portuguese destroyed Benin empire. They brought Edo people into Nigeria, they formed Benin city which some uneducated people mistakenly took to be the ancient Benin empire today. All the cities of Ancient Benin empire prior 1400AD was broken up into pieces from Modern Ghana pass Nigeria and old obas were sold into slavery or killed and new oba which are the foreigners or Bastards children mixed with white people that were living among us were installed by Europeans as new Oba in various places to separate the Ibo tribes from each other, the Ibo people of ife moved out with Allafin into Oyo to avoid slave raiders while some ran back into the east to avoid slave raiders of Portuguese and Edo, Ijaw, itshkiri e.t.c, Hundreds of years later, languages has been changed different times and Ibo people has been separated, some people forgets their origins and historians are talking nonsense and writing lies on Wikipedia, the people that came into Nigeria in 1400AD upwards as slave traders are now living among us and lying and saying that they are the founder of ancient Benin Empire. Edo is not Benin abi is Fodio Nigerian? most of the kings installed in the new kingdoms formed around 1400ad to late 1800AD are foreigners, slave traders and savages.😮
