I think the reason why the hinge is tougher than a macbok is because it has a touch screen. with a loose hinge display, as you touch it, it's gonna wobble too much. I don't mind opening a laptop with two hands, it's not like I don't have an arm or something.
Thanks Andrew! I'm a Web developer that's getting ready to go from 4 monitors to 1 as I hit the road fulltime in an RV and I think this video just made up my mind. Going to pull the trigger on a 512gb model today! BTW, tried watching a couple different reviews before ultimately landing on yours. The information your provide is on point with what consumers are interested in... without all the fluff. Good Job!!
man your narrating voice is way more pleasimg to listen to in this video rather than the other ones, Thanks for noticing the feed back! also sick intro and review!
Excellent Review!! In fact, this was one of the most helpful laptop reviews I have seen in a while. I just ordered my XPS with 1 TB of SSD and 32 GB of RAM. Especially after watching this video, I'm really looking forward to getting it in a few days.
Amazing Review ever!!!! So professional. You covered almost everything Hardware plus their perfomance, I particularly liked your themperature and sound review which is really outstanding Great job.
This is a very well done review. I'm currently using this laptop - the 1080p, non-touch screen variant. This laptop is the most impressive piece of hardware I've ever owned. I really can't find anything to complain about.
+Michael Rebong I got the 512 SSD option - I have no 1TB mechanical drive in it. I have never measured the battery life, but for casual use, (i.e. not gaming), I would say it has at least 4 hours of use. Don't quote me on it.
Is there a way to disable the nvidia GPU and just use the intel internal graphics so I can save some battery while I'm on the go? I just want to play some very non demanding games and really need 3-4 hours of battery life is that possible? thanks
+YuriFineart The Nvidia Optimus technology can switch between integrated and dedicated GPU on the fly. In the Nvidia Control Panel (Manage 3D settings -> Program settings) you can also force an application to use the Nvidia or the Intel GPU, so it will be switched automatically, when the predefined game launches. Also the integrated graphics should be used by default, when in energy safer mode. Another method to additionally save performance is to use v-sync ingame. By activating that "feature", the fps will be locked to 60 and the GPU will not run at 100%, but just as high as needed to get to the 60 fps.
+Capone2412 this does not seem to work reliably in the XPS 15 9550. I can select the global setting to always use the NVIDIA High Performance GPU (instead of auto-select or Integrated), but for whatever reason it still does not turn on by default. Has anyone with this same laptop been able to corroborate? Having it for 2 weeks now, it does not seem to work as it should...
By far the best review I've seen of this, thanks! Some say the mousepad double-finger scroll is terrible browsing in Google Chrome, have you tried that?
Hi, I am considering this laptop and also the Macbook pro 15 retina... Can't decide, I like the Mac environment but kind of disappointed that they are still using DDR3 and poor graphic card... It's a real tool for me as I am a web dev =) and i would like to be able to use it on the train... Any advice ?
I have the half terabyte version and I was seriously considering a 15" MacBook Pro because of the similar price points of about $2,300 but so far i'm happy I went with the XPS 15, but there's two things that I've encountered 1. the space bar is inclined more towards me so I have to press it farther up to get an accurate press, and 2. the speakers, although loud have this metallic or tinny sound to them at points that's very noticeable. other than that I love this computer!
Thanks for your detailed review! Could you plz check if your screen will get red tinted when you view from right corner side? Because me and a handful ppl got the viewing angle issue.
Thanks for providing a great & insightful review. One question I have - can the Nvidia 960M in this PC support the Geforce Experience app and it's video capture capabilities (e.g. desktop capture / gaming capture)?
I would always recommend V-sync off as unless you are getting constant screen tears it is not worth the extra delay in the image being displayed. I would also like to add it is a big no no to have V-sync on when doing a bench mark. Other than that this is still a very good review and I like your style.
Umm I believe that to be more of a problem with your computer it seems. You may want to get it checked out. I have ran modern titles before with a Athlon II X4 640, 4GB RAM, and a 9800gt (which in today's terms is not that good of a performer) and have had zero problems running with and without V-sync.
Mine will be here tomorrow. I7 with 1 tb SSD. I hope I didnt make a mistake. Im reading some negative things driver wise about this unit. We will see. Great review, I hope my unit lives up too your review. Oh yea...With 4k touch! God I hope I didnt make a $2,300.00 mistake.
great video. one minor comment, at around 6:02 you say GPU temp was 83 celcius, the screenshot you show was actually 93, which is not that low. on that token, any chance you saved the screen shot of maximum and minimum CPU speed? my theory is that the XPS 15 throttles more than others due to aggresive power and temp settings. the price to pay with a small chasis is less pace for ventilation, hence higher temps, hence more need to cap CPU. in a way you might have seen low temps, because BIOS is constraining the CPU, that is the reason of my question.
You are looking at the wrong thing. Check the panel on the left it has several columns min max and average tempt in the row of gPu it says 93. The 83 on the otter on panel is not max but current.
Holy crap that thing is sexy, I would totally pick it up now, but I need money for other things. I'll have to keep this guy in mind a year or so from now when I'll be needing a new lappy. But HOLY shit is that nice.
hey Andrew great review I had been debating between surfacebook and xps 15, in my eyes xps 15 clearly excel in many ways as I had read my reviews about ppl having difficulty with surfacebook. my question is I'm not a gamer at all so I don't care for the top of the line gpu, however I love the infinite screen of xps, the base line model is not a touch screen so which model is next step up to get in xps with touch screen option thanks
If you were to disable the touch screen and turn down the resolution to 1080p (on the UHD version) can we expect a longer battery life closer to the FHD non-touch version (17 hour)?
thats not how it works.. the 4k display will still draw the same amount of power.. if you really care about battery life your best bet is the 1080p version. In actual use it should get about up to 4 hours more usage then the 4k version. The 4k averages 6 to 7 hours and the 1080p is 9 to 10 hours
Hows its conditions now? Im gonna get one after see the reviews and comparisons. But one thing pulled me back was the problems including noisy fan sounds, rattled sounds and the machine wouldn't turn on after a certain times? I need your help
Anyone know if the issue where the processor speed is scaled back when you go into battery mode, but doesn't reset to normal when you plug back in, has been fixed? Seems like a major issue...
I just ordered mine with 4k display and order status is showing in production but worried after watching some videos as people are complaining about display , sound and many other issues.

Really good, concise review. But then again all of the reviews you did, that I've watched were.
Keep it up bro.
Excellent Review!! In fact, this was one of the most helpful laptop reviews I have seen in a while. I just ordered my XPS with 1 TB of SSD and 32 GB of RAM. Especially after watching this video, I'm really looking forward to getting it in a few days.
+Eric Ewers Thanks for the feedback and support. :)

Looks and sounds like a promising notebook. The bezel on the screen is just stunning everytime I look at it.
Thanks for the video, Andrew.

+Dominic Martini Oh yeah, this notebook is top notch.. :)
+Dominic Martini Did you get the model with 1TB+32SSD? What's your battery like?
+Michael Rebong I got the 512 SSD option - I have no 1TB mechanical drive in it. I have never measured the battery life, but for casual use, (i.e. not gaming), I would say it has at least 4 hours of use. Don't quote me on it.
+Dominic Martini this is the FHD 86 watts model?
+Michael Rebong The one I got was 84watt, 1080p
That was a great review Andrew! Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work. Cheers! :)

Wait a minute, I read somewhere that the RAM was soldered to the board and could not be upgraded on the XPS Infinity models....
Great review! Hey are you having any problem with scaling? Or do you just keep it at 200% at all times?
Wow, that picture at 4:40 has to be 10 years old.
I found this review hard to watch because the guy sounds like an airplane attendant.
Lol omg he does
When can we expect the reviews of the HP pavilion 13-s128nr x360 convertible??
Really liked your review. Please compare the new Dell XPS 15 inch with latest released Macbook Pro 15 inch!
Nah Pat I think Dell XPS 15 2016
Nah Pat better screen better GPU better keyboard

It was more to show how well it runs. Low performance computers lock up when V-Sync is on. Trust me, i'd know

would you get the 1080p version of this ? same specs but just 1080p or is 4k really outstanding ?
Is it possible to use it as a monitor? If I would want to connect a console to it, like PS4/xbox.
How good is this laptop to handle heavy Photoshop files? Need help please. Thank you
+Zinat Ibrahim It can handle Photoshop with ease.
+Rachel Reid This is Dell XPS. You are looking at Inspiron. The processor is much slower compared to i7 6700HQ found in this.

Hello Andrew, Compare Y700 to LenovoY700, which one is better pricing?
I just ordered mine with 4k display and order status is showing in production but worried after watching some videos as people are complaining about display , sound and many other issues.
Same as me bro! Mine has been in production for AGES! I was told it would reach the shipped stage on the 18th but it still hasn't changed.
Mine is showing expected delivery date of 4 December , when you ordered?
I ordered mine on the 21st of October and it is estimated to arrive on the 25th of November.
Sad so it means mine will be after 4 December
Just got an email now from dell. My order has shipped and will arrive on Monday.
i had a xps 15 and it had an awful view angle! so i retourned it after 2 weeks... now im waiting for the next one

Hi Andy
I have been looking at the XPS 15, and here is my dilemma. The new XPS 15 that has the intel corei7, does not have the 4k display, which I want. The XPS 15 with the 4k display has an intel core i5 and has touch, this touch feature is not that important to me.
Do you think they will offer the intel core i7 with 4k next year? Why wouldn't they put the i7 with the 4k display? Or why would wouldn't dell offer the 4k display on all the XPS models?
Thank you
+leo ll They do offer, by default, 4K to i7.
Michael Rebong on the website it offers an i5. I think you have to upgrade to the i7 according to the Dell chat agent I spoke to.
The prices range from 999 to 2200 $USD, 2k/4k, memory, and i5/i7 are all options. Anyone can get the 4k touch with the i7 but if your local store does not offer that version they may try to sell you something else. Usually Amazon shows the most model options, and both Cnet and PC mag have reviews on the 4k touch with the i7.
I've been hearing a lot of issues on forums about this laptop, is it worth the risk?
