Thanks for this super clear tutorial. Today I overhauled my forks too following your instructions and it was really a piece of cake. Before watching this video I thought it was quite complicated, and it looks like that, but if you follow the step by step approach it’s done in an hour or two. Vielen Dank!
To enter the damper rod with rings in the tube, use a drink-can-made-slider-funnel, it works great and you don't need expensive BMW materials. To slide the tube into the outer tube, go from the other side, this way the rounded top slides easy trough the slider sealing.
It's amazing how easy to service this old fork is. Yet the setup inside is not far from modern forks, the Monocle says. I hope you enjoy and learn something from the video.
Hallo Bikedogtor, Tolles Video, vielen Dank! Darf ich dich fragen, welches Anziehmoment du bei der M8 Mutter, bei Minute 9:50 verwendet hast? LG Gerhard
Thanks for the fork anatomy demonstration. I have never done this, but what about the length of the springs? they settle over time, often differently, and might cause imbalance and flutter in the worst case. And which direction did you put the damper holes? I think they should point sideways (outward).
I didn't measure the length of the springs but you are right, this should be done and after so many years they may need to be replaced. My bike won't be ridden mich so that's not a big issue, although the front feels way too soft.
@@bikedogtor1663 There is a UA-cam channel called "Brooks Airhead Garage" with a couple of videos with fork assembly. In one he mentions a cheap BMW tool that guides the three small rings into place. In the other he mentions an update from Race Tech that improves the dampening so that reacts better during fast curves (nice to have the wheel stay on the ground through bumps). He is generally very thorough. Another good UA-cam channel is boxer2valve, but maybe you know all this already.

Thank you for your comment. That's exactly what youtube is for. Of course it's complicated but you can learn how to do things.
At 7:47 the rubber buffer is going in upside down. Try it the other way, it fits much more naturally.
Thank you, maybe your comment helps other people. Mine is done now :-)
I have a newer water cooled BMW but have always been interested in the older air cooled bikes. Thank you very much for this video!

That again for this Brilliant Tutorial, I have just done one leg following your instructions 😊
Always nice to see when my videos help. Thanks again
Aren't there any bushings in the forks these models?
Nope
Ich hätte noch eine Frage.
Müssen die Bohrungen im Standrohr, die man bei Minute 5:11 sehen kann, beim Einbau eine genaue Position haben?
LG Gerhard
thank you for posting!
Thanks very much for your excellent Tutorial.
I hope you can do your own service now :-)
Hopefully, I have just received the internal parts for the and will buy the springs when next month's wages drop in, lol.

Danke für deinen Kommentar. Das Drehmoment weiß ich leider nicht mehr.
Dear Bikedogtor, where did you find all the revision parts for the fork?
I ordered everything from a German online shop

My spring measured 555 mm.
Do you have a list of all the gaskets and so on that you need for a rebuild?
No sorry, I ordered a rebuild kit from a dealer in Germany
@@bikedogtor1663 do you know the name of the dealer?

10:00 When lying to yourself hurts less than buying wrench socket set #43 you'll never use again :D
Haha exactly :-D
