Homeless family living in a small RV with no bathroom or water using social media.

  • I really don't know where to begin with this story so I'll start at the beginning. Although this interview is taped in Dayton, Nevada, I first meet Kerry and his family months ago on Twitter.
As I think about this family I get emotional. I cannot imagine raising a child in a small RV with no bathroom or running water. This family's life is far from easy, but together they keep fighting, and together they stay grateful for the little things.
Kerry has become the biggest evangelist for the We Are Visible community. He even collected cans to pay for printing cost to distribute flyers at a local homeless connect day Not sure any church or homeless services organization has done that.
Kerry is always thanking people on Twitter and keeps engaging new homeless people who join the community. I am grateful for Kerry because he's championed We Are Visible into so much more than what I ever imagined.
When I started We Are Visible [wearevisible.com] I envisioned homeless services helping homeless people via social media. But something far better has happened. Homeless people are encouraging and helping other homeless people.
What I also never imagined was a 13 year-old homeless boy connecting with me on social media. Keifer uses his Sony PSP to get on Facebook. He leaves me little notes because he does not have a keyboard to type on. Often just a "hi" or "huz" he'll leave on my wall. Completely wrecks me every time. It's because of this young boy that I have a new vision for We Are Visible that I made public at 140 Conference in Los Angeles
One night Sabrina tweet me that Keifer took my Facebook profile photo and replaced Tony Hawk on this video game. It was at that moment I knew I had to visit this family, so this last week I flew into Reno and drove to where their RV is parked.
I took the family out to eat. This was the first time this family has been out to eat in over two years. We went to Keifer's favorite restaurant. It was a wonderful night. You can see some photos here: www.flickr.com/...
I have to say that I fell in love with this family. I've worked with homeless families for years, and although each and every family I want off the streets, I have never felt such passion, or felt so powerless, in wanting Kerry, Sabrina and Keifer a better life.
If you know of anyone in or near Carson City, Nevada, that can help Kerry find a job please contact them. He wants to work. They will hopefully have housing soon, but the battle is far from over.
This family has taught me lots. All Keifer wanted when I visited was a bag of fortune cookies for a class project. I spent a few hours with them and helped them get outside of their crisis for only a moment. I so wish I could do more.
And to be really honest I am flattered that Keifer replaced Tony Hawk with my ugly mug, but Tony Hawk is way more awesome than I'll ever be. Wouldn't it be great if Tony Hawk went to visit Keifer? I think so, and I'm sure Keifer will put Tony's photo back. The media attention alone with hopefully get the local community to help this family. Call me a dreamer but stranger things have happened. Why not tweet Tony Hawk [ / tonyhawk ] a link to this story.
I want the best for this family. They are amazing, and although I spent only a few hours with them, I think I left my heart in Dayton, Nevada.

The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.

I lived in a camper for 2 years with my mom, brother and POS lazy dad. He uprooted us from our home in NY and we basically rolled in on fumes to VA. We lived in our station wagon for a few months then a tent for 6 months in a camping ground. We had to pay 25 cents for 3 minutes of a shower at the campground and we had to build fires to cook whatever we had from food pantries or other homeless families offered. He stumbled upon an abandoned camper and we moved into it. It was in the hills so no one bothered us and he snagged electric somehow from a nearby house... We had to fill huge hugs with water every other day to bathe and cook... This whole time my mom was working as a CNA trying to save money to get us an apartment.... He took her money all the time because he was lazy. Winter's sucked in the mountains and we used a kerosene heater for warmth... Worst few years of my life... My mom finally got us out of there and into a house. Dad went to jail for a money scheme and she took the chance, we moved back home to NY. He got out of jail and went back to the house to find us gone taking only what we could fit in a SUV. He sold our toys, TV, my mom's whole collection of Disney movies, our new boom boxes mom got us for that Christmas just a couple months before, even our beds.... My mom went back to VA with a moving truck and saw everything was gone. She cried seeing only a couple boxes of her personal stuff like pictures and dishes left scattered across the house. She came home and got us new boom boxes and started replacing her Disney movie collection that she wanted to give to me when I grew up. It's a sad life living like this family has, but you can only go up from there. I hope they're doing great and appreciate everything they have, this situation did that for me. I'll never take for granted having a roof over my head or the luxury of showering 10 times a day if I wanted.

I am dying of the lung disease and I don't have much money and I feel bad because my own family lives in a run-down house with no furniture my two kids sleep on the floor on a mattress and there's only one recliner the house is empty with no furniture and I used to be sad that when I die I'm going to have to know that my family is going to have to die in that state and there's nothing I can do about it my mother is a breast cancer survivor who is crippled from her legs and my stepfather is a crippled veteran as well and I asked God why why do my two kids and my niece have to grow up like that living in that house but then I think to myself and I see videos like this and it makes me extremely grateful that at least we have a roof over our head even if we have no furniture I always told myself I didn't want to die sleeping on the floor like an animal when I go I want to go with some dignity at least dying on a bed sleeping on the floor is very painful for my lungs but you know what at least we have running water and a roof over our head and a bathroom to use no I feel really crappy after watching this because there's people that have it way worse and I pray that God blesses them my heart goes out to this family

great thinking to get that trailer that was an excellent idea and for only 200 bucks better than sleeping in a ditch or on the street certainly much more secure , so many people on hard times, to be honest I just wouldn't have thought of without seeing these videos so filming the subject does work in raising awareness which otherwise might not be there it just reminds the rest of us how cushy our lives really are and the most basic and important fundamental in anyones life is a roof over your head

I have been homeless 3 times in this life...the hardest part is always being on the go...never able to just relax for a bit...ones guard must be maintained at all times..socks are so very important..i used to dream of a new pair of socks..so for those that don't know..giving a pair of socks is everything...every time I had a full time job as well....i worked my way back into housing...
I finally was stable...but at the age of 22 in was hurt on the job and became disabled...perscribed fentanyl for my pain...but after two years was tried of feeling stupid so I stopped the meds cold turkey..luckily no withdrawal....docs were shocked but to me if one takes it for the proper use them it really is fine....my ignorance...as my docs later told me I was part of the 5% of the world's population that can't get addicted to opiates...the university of Washington decided to take my DNA to study and try and find a cure for opiate addiction...
Well I did force myself to work till my body shut down due to my disabilities...and forced with very few options....
Was approved for SSDI to make the story short....bit due to my age and only getting half the average in benefits as well the average person...i was looking at a return to the streets...
But I found out I can still collect my benefits anywhere in the world except for 13 countries...so I did some research..and moved
I currently find myself able to maintain an upper middle class lifestyle..supporting a family of three for around 800 dollars a month...in my city one can rent a two bed single bath for 100 a month...i see my doc for 10 dollars an office visit once a month and my meds are 60-70 a month...a live in maid is 100 a month plus their basic hygiene needs and food...my house in a gated community is 211 a month at a 15yr mortgage...my sons private school is 600 a year plus books and uniform...a meal at a fast food type is about 2 dollars...
I have lived here now for a solid 5yrs and the comfort of never having to worry for bills is amazing...i know I may be asked and before I get beat up in the comments please just understand that my choices may not be the best.course for everyone or you...but for me it was...and just trying to express the knowledge to others who may find themselves look at the future I saw for myself before I moved...
I know it may or will be asked...so I will say..i am in the Philippines...and although I picked this country it may not be best.for you..so if you find yourself considering this option..use your time and research what may fit your needs best...if anyone has any questions my email is motto966@yahoo.com...i have considered doing a blog of my experiences but am on the reserved side personality wise and not very tech savvy...please keep any comments on the positive side and thank you for taking a moment to read a portion of myself...i hope all find their niche in this life that leads to having the security, the community and well being we all deserve..

Some of my best and worst memories are from a time when my dad was out of work. We were nowhere near homeless, but it meant that he was home every day. Picked me up from school. Had a relationship with me after years of being gone for work when I woke up and went to bed.
Working at a low income housing project it really hit me that some of the poorest people are the richest of this world. When we don’t have gifts and snacks to bribe, we give love and encouragement. When we don’t have money for toys, we create experiences. We are the most adaptive species, but we have adapted to capitalism and the degradation of family unit.
To this family I say that now you may look upon your situation with disdain, but when you are back on your feet you will look back fondly on the times and proximity with one another that grew from your hardship. :, )

Future homeless people should get a vehicle they can live in, with the money they have (if they have any) before they move out of their house. One of the biggest issues with America is the fact that capitalism has allowed the housing market value to out weight the cost of living pay. Pay just can’t keep up to the every rising prices of literally everything, including houses.
