It became Rea's first major success in UK, peaking at #2, behind Michael Jackson's Bad, and spent 46 weeks in the charts, achieving Platinum accreditation. It reached the Top 10 in six other countries, including New Zealand where it became a number one album.
"Let's Dance" was released as the first single and, like the album, became a major hit for Rea in UK, peaking at #12. In tone with the success of the album, "Let's Dance" became a major hit in New Zealand as well, peaking at #2. The other singles released from this album were "Loving You Again" (UK #47), "Joys of Christmas" (UK #67) and "Que Sera" (UK #73).

Lyrics:
On the restless road to nowhere
There's no certain peace it seems
Desire to keep on moving
till the river of dreams
Is it just 'cos someone told you
Is it just because you found
Old freedom feels uneasy when duty is around
When allegiance asks the questions
Old freedom twists and turns
And chokes on codes of honour
On the sword of no return
And it's the curse of the traveller
The curse of the traveller
Got a hold of me
And it won't let you be
And in sleepless nights
You'll call her name
And feel loneliness cold to the bone
And when the daylight breaks
This old tired heart aches
To be such a long way, such a long way from home
And you cry for the harbour lights
But you'll never be free
Of the craving for refuge
And the call of the sea
Always wanting to sell up
But always needing to buy
So till the road leads to somewhere
And that river runs dry
It's the curse of the traveller
Ain't gonna let you be
The curse of the traveller
And it sure got a hold of me.

One of my absolute favorites. Chris has that haunting style that never leaves you.
I have been listening to Chris Rea since the mid 1980's. He is far and away my favourite artist and one of the most underrated. I'm just continually amazed that, just when you think he's written his greattest song of all time, a few years later he comes along with a new song that makes those other great songs seem pretty ordinary. The words Great and Legend are so loosely used these days, but when you associate them with Chris Rea, he is both of those and has been for a LONG time!

I find myself back again, after a long hot summer. Wishing I was on the Oregon Coast again. I both love and hate this song. It reminds me of places I can never go back to, and a love I've never had. This video is shot in and around New Port Oregon. My most favorite place on the West Coast. Songs good too.
I have been enjoying Chris Rea’s music since 1987 when I first encountered ‘On the beach’ as the de facto national anthem of the Cook Islands. 33 years later I still love to hear his music - currently from ‘Still such a long way to go’ - playing in the pickup as I have a midday ice cold beer down by one of my creeks. He has given me great pleasure from his music over the years, and I thank him greatly! 🍺🍺🍺 Garth in New Caledonia
ck him out on yt in 78...playing piano and singing "fool if you think its over"...
Garth Perry. Same here. Discovered him bc of ON THE BEACH. STARTED RESEARCHING HIM. Shocked at the huge catalog of music from him. Addicted ever since. He is a beautiful sensitive anomaly . He creates an AMBIENCE all his own like no other. Love ❤️ him.
Same story but stared with The Road to hell 🤘🏼

@@karinirisirene Chris Rea's music has kept me going through many a trial. Shed many tears, danced with happiness in happy times and wrote emotional poetry, all because he said " we all have creativity in us, but we do not tap into it. He has always been my inspiration since the eighties.

There are just some artists that are top rate due to strong songwriting, and musicianship and Chris Rea fits that mold. Very underrated artist but the more I listen to his music the more I appreciate his talent.

my kind of music changed suddenly when i heard his song Blue Cafe!
C'est juste!
Having spent most of my life on the road, criss-crossing North America, I really connected with this song. This excellent video is going up the rugged coastal highways of California & Oregon. I know both well on two-wheels (one of the Top 10 motorcycle roads in the world), four, and six (the big "Bob-Tailed" cargo truck I one summer drove for a travelling Christian Rock Fest & Ministry). I have a number of times been over the multi-arched bridge going into Newport, Oregon, where I one trip spent several days and thought about not leaving. Just sitting here all the time these days has had a bad effect on me. Yes, it's the curse of the traveller. I just wish I could somehow hit the road again.😕
That guitar at four minutes...just sublime.. and that breathtaking solo at the end..😁 Wonderful....😊
My 5 years old son adores Chris Rea and the majority of his gorgeous songs. Often runs to me Mummy, open Chris Rea Blue Cafe .

Thanks for uploading this. I am from the States and I have been a fan of this incredible musician for the last 13 years. I "met" Chris back in 1978 when his record label released the single "Fool if You Think It's Over" from his debut album "What Ever happened to Benny Santini?". I know he hated this version and when he released "Still So Far to Go: The Best of Chris Rea in 2009 he re-recorded the song. UA-cam has re-introduced a lot of artist that I may have heard from long ago who where from the UK but got a distribution deal here in the States. What I was guilty of is I didn't pursue his music any further. Back in the 70s the radio was still king introducing new music to a wider audience. I don't know why but as far as I can tell none of his other songs were released in the States. So I just forgot him. About 15 years ago I was just randomly choosing videos to watch and I noticed that Chris was a guest singer with Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings. He performed a killer blues number and I rediscovered his music. I started watching a lot of his music videos then I downloaded " Still So Far to Go: The Best of Chris Rea in 2009. That sealed it for me.
Do you know the location where this video was shot?
It has to be his homeland in the North East of England. Chris has been suffering with ill health recently, i too love his music . My late beloved and i saw him on his Road to Hell tour, what a great musician he is.
@@jeancollins2009 I know he had his pancreas removed due to his bout with pancreatic cancer. I saw a short documentary on all the pills he has to take because of the pancreas removal. I did not know that he had suffered a stroke in 2016. Strokes can really change your life. He has gone through so many health challenges. I have had a few myself two heart attacks.
@@lockedin60 Hi James, so sorry to hear of your health issues, keep your chin up and follow doctors orders. Iost my dear husband to cancer in 2017, we had a great time together....going to lots of gigs, Floyd, Yes and Genesis and many more over the years. I could be wrong but i believe the opening scenes in the video are of the North East, maybe Newcastle or in that vicinity. He is a proud Northener and always has been. Take care, regards, Jean. P.S. I like 'nothing to fear' by Chris :)
@@jeancollins2009 Well thank you. I think it is a part of the aging process and mine were the result of bad genetics from both sides of my family. I take medications which minimize the risk. But I haven't many problems lately. Nothing like Chris. Though when the two incidents happened they were no fun. But I was close enough to good hospitals and was taken care of promptly. But my dear mother. She never smoked a day in her life. But she was raised on a farm where tobacco was raised. Her father smoked a pipe and her brothers where cigarette smokers. My dad smoked and chewed tobacco the first 15 years of their marriage but he gave up both. My mother did work out in the sun and ended up with melanoma. It was removed and didn't come back. But at some point in time she developed lung cancer and multiple myeloma. In February we learned she had Mets Brain Cancer and had 6 months to live. They were correct. My 87 year old mother left this earth early Monday Morning June 27 2022. You just never now.
@@lockedin60 That is so sad, you will miss her. When my mother died back in the 90s, i had lost more than a mother, i lost my history teacher too. Mothers are always a mine of family information, all the dramas and gossip. Take care.
Somewhere in the distant future, an astronaut will be traversing through the endless depths of the universe, and this song will reflect his or her being.

Then I've been spending all day today researching his history and playing his great music - what a moron I am. This guy is an epic talent in so many ways. Yes, I agree, TIMELESS. Chris Rea is in My opinion, ONE OF THE GREATEST GUITARIST TO EVER BE RECORDED. His notes are Always allowed to be heard, without the next note "stepping on it" . He doesn't have to show you how fast his fingers are. He allows each note to Lead you to the next, and NOT be Pulled by it. This is what makes CHRIS REA A GREAT MUSICIAN.
