There's one possible explanation to the movie: adultery is actually a ground for divorce in a lot of countries. Now we know that there's a lot of tension between the student and the wife on account of the student being a drinker. But there's something that goes a little beyond that- there's genuine acrimony (indicated in the student turning the lights on when she brings the fish- unless it's done to prevent her from having a seizure because flickering lights) and he explicitly makes a comment about divorce. The wife is unstable and it could possibly be the student's plot to get the teacher in bed with his wife so that he has a ground for divorce and doesn't have to pay alimony. Alternatively, the student is the one who's really sick and wants the teacher to substitute (no pun intended) but struggles with the thought of having to give her up. The acrimony could all be staged. The fact that he sends his daughter to call them back shows that he's struggling somewhat. Almost everything (except the wife sleepwalking) could be part of their larger plan. However, this seems quite unlikely. I think that the film has deliberately been made to leave just enough inconsistency so as to not fully validate any one theory of what it's about over the other.
Well they couldn't actually say that, even though the fish is probably fine, taking it out of the water can be considered harm, not to mention how they may have gotten the fish. And even if it was killed(which I highly doubt they'd kill it like that lol), as long as it was eaten, then no fowl play occurred. Imho Plus that may have been real liquor idk if they're allowed to have real liquor props where they made this though.
What I love about some of the short films featured here in omeleto is that certain characters' motivations are left to the viewers' imagination, leaving us to make conversations about it.
I quickly came to the initial conclusion that the man lied about his wife being sick, and he was the sick one. I thought his motive was to find a "replacement" father/husband for his family, because he didn't expect to live long, and he had an unspoken agreement to allow his wife to seduce the young teacher. She would be fearing her husband's death too, and surviving without his financial support, not to mention the loneliness of being a younger widow. However, I think the scene at the end revealed the wife really was sick, and the hints about the man's health was merely misdirection. The man probably knew she was a flirt, and either wanted to allow her some final moments of pleasure, or just wasn't threatened by it. Unfortunately it also put the young teacher in an awkward position, and man did seem to genuinely care about him.
i think if he wasn't threatened by the idea he should've at one moment or another disclose it to the teacher. Teacher seems attracted but not wanting to step over.
I don't think she had a physical illness, but a mental one. And he was an alcoholic (much more than she was) and knew he couldn't perform his husbandly duties anymore to her satisfaction. Otherwise, I think your analysis is right.

I've milled this around in my head for a while, read some comments/perspectives, and decided to let it go. I'm not going to figure this out. I don't have the personal or academic experience to understand what was going on, and this was too small a glimpse at this married couple's dynamic for me to figure out what's going on with whom. Their attempts to control situations and each other are going to make for an uncomfortable memory for Kurt, who will only recall being manipulated, and will recognize he was never in a position to help either Ruzena or Vladislav.
I,ve seen too many shorts but maybe we,ve got a little gem out here.....our life is full of awkward moments but we call them routine if they take place under our roof...the interaction between strangers and them witnessing those moments has a human effect of extreme closeness and affection....also ..in a careful timing those feelings stay as they are warming our hearts and not evoliving into basic insticts...(little girl walkingin - husband interrupting - teacher departing)....in the end loneliness makes us vulnerable to our own fear of the future and that is what I think the short was about ...nobody I believe was actually sick ...terminally or otherwise
Gosh! My interpretation is that there is nothing wrong with the wife. She looks amazing and prepares a feast for the family. She's doing her best but she doesn't love her husband any more. She has regrets about marrying him but is now stuck. He is an alcoholic and now has an excuse to drink. The unfortunate teacher has been invited into this domestic mess and is kind of bullied into drinking by the sexist student who taunts him about being like a "woman" , which to him is an insult. All sorts of interesting details in this beautifully made film. Well done all who were involved.
I don’t believe that the old man was sick, a drunk if anything. I believe the wife was truly sick with not a physical but a mental illness. She was always looking for “her” answer from teacher, especially in the kitchen when they shared a cigarette, asking almost rhetorical question, such as her haircut. The old man knows his wife he wouldn’t ask the teacher to go cheer up his wife when only meeting for the first time. He made the teacher heavily drink at the dinner because he knew what to except from the teacher trying to help her.
Maybe I'm weird here, but I get the impression through this film that Vladislav saw Kurt's initial loneliness with being away from family at Christmas, and understood loneliness as well, based on the illness-strained relationship with his wife. It's like he was trying to provide all three of them with some kind of connection. That's at least how I take this story. I like it a lot.
@Chip Howell I agree with you. Families can be complicated. Seems that love for both his wife and teacher is his motive. Loneliness can drive a person to take drastic measures to create a little happiness.
This was awkward mainly because the teacher was so passive. "No thank you" whenever he was asked to do something he didn't want to do; or thanking the hosts for dinner, and just leaving, would have been how you'd handle this weird situation in real-life. His wife sleep walks, she's not physically sick nor mentally ill. She's frustrated in the marriage and the husband is the sick one!
The teacher would have enjoyed his Christmas if he had remained back in his apartment despite there being no water compared to the painfully embarrassing ordeal he was subjected to at his student's dysfunctional home.
So after reading several comments and watching this twice. Here is my theory. The Student obviously much older than his wife, invited his lonely Teacher over to the house for Christmas. The Wife a closet drinker, is unhappy in the marriage and wants out. The Student still loves his wife and wants to make her happy and his Teacher, so, he invites him over for Christmas Dinner, hoping the two would possibly hook up and make her happy. However, the Teacher can't handle his liquor and passes out. The Wife has a mild Mental Disorder, which is why she looked baked when the Teacher called her name, but she was acting as if she was cooking. The Student is used to her doing this so, when he hears the Teacher call her name, he comes to return her to bed, caringly. Both the Student and Wife feed off of each other in a Codependent way. Either the Student is sicker than he lets on and is hoping to give her someone He can trust to take care of her if he dies from whatever his problems are and this way he knows his kids will be fine along with her. Again, this is only my theory, I don't believe he was trying to do anything maliciously other than making sure someone would understand her problems and not judge them, but would be able to take care of them.
yes we have the same theory....even the ending scene where the teacher says 'i'm sorry' and the old guy says 'it's alright...now come back, it's cold'. he really wants to hook up the young guy with his wife. even provoking his wife to divorce him. and like you mentioned he trust this 'lonely but good guy' to take care of his wife and kids. maybe the old guy's intentions was for the good of his family and the teacher at least in his mind. these short films are great make you guessing, wondering, drawing your own conclusions and interpretations.
yes there were many signs, like when he kept telling the teacher "come on become a man" probably referring and preparing him to be the man of the family and when he told him to cheer the wife up it was putting both in a way to connect more with each other.
I dont know but if he truly wanted them to hook up he wouldn't have sent the kid to interrupt them the second time. Seems like he doesn't want it to happen but lets her do it for her sake.
It was fun watching this film. At first I thought is that Prague? The bridges, the tram, the student dorm near the Olympic stadium, even the entryway and locks all looked familiar, but not enough view to be sure. Then the names in the bathroom sealed that question, along with the Carp. I spent 1.5 years there. At Christmas Eve many fisherman sell fish on the streets from buckets. I'm glad I didn't have to kill one, and that the family I lived with didn't drink. Wonderful time, met lots of good friends, 30 years ago.
Poor Fish needs some stimulation Edit, never mind, apparently he’s what’s for dinner. I definitely got a nostalgic cold European Christmas vibe that I so dearly miss living in Nederland and England. My theory; Viroslav wanted another bloke to come by so he could feel macho around his household because clearly, his wife emasculates him.
Per the Omeleto description: "The ending gestures at a kind of fellowship of human suffering, through a gentle acceptance of our flaws and needs and a willingness to share company and bake bread as we mutually stumble through life." For a lot of it I wasn't exactly sure what was going on, other than that the husband wanted to invite someone over to give him a reason to drink. However the ending resonated with me because I have found that any number of times in my life I've entered into strange social situations because they were better than being alone, and I have to imagine on some level other people have felt that way with me, and so the gentle bond that was created by the teacher thinking a bit better about staying, the student going after him, the teacher apologizing, not saying why, and the request to come back ultimately being accepted rang to me of that kind of craving we have for connection and the imperfect ways we sometimes mutually go about creating those bonds. And as weird of a situation it would be to find yourself in, if you're that lonely, I can understand the intrigue. I think the student spotted his loneliness and could read his longing, which albeit, wasn't totally hard to do.
Ok, I have seen this one before. But I still really enjoyed it, kinda yelling to the main character. Lol And of course at the end as the credits roll, yelling, haaahhh no! Don't leave me here!! So good...Thankyou so much for such an interesting odd film. Love it so much. Great casting..💙🌎

At first I thought the fish in the bathtub signified the lonely life of the wife. But boy when the fish got killed, I felt it related more to the poor teacher.
Let me guess this teacher is so weird and awkward that his wife caught him cheating on her with the fish in his bathtub and that's why she wants a divorce.

Love it, and the small details that explain everything rock. Yes she has a drinking issue, but she's also a sleepwalker.
Legend has it, he never went home
My snese is that the wife was rooting the teacher behind the scenes
@@mba849 Probably referring more to the drinking thing or killing the fish.
No I feel like something is going completely over our heads there more to this
That fish *WAS* a great actor... I hope

The teacher would have enjoyed his Christmas if he had remained back in his apartment despite there being no water compared to the painfully embarrassing ordeal he was subjected to at his student's dysfunctional home.
I agree
But then we would have to watch muuuuuuch shorter version of this story)
U eould say dysfunctional because other episodes made by omelet
I'm a bit of an introvert anyway, so I would've stayed at my apartment and ride the Christmas out.
But There's nothing to write about that way!!!
There was nothing awkward about the teacher, just an odd situation he walked into that he and the audience are equally confused about.
But then again telling "you're a man" and all that is definitely weird. Still can't figure out what it means
Nice try
The whole family is weird even the kids lmaoo if i was in that dudes situation i will be paranoid for life
It was fun watching this film.
He's going back for it :P
Who just walks into another person's house without ringing the doorbell or knocking on the door?
The teacher is so awkward, he's like a fish out of water!!!
Hahahahahaha good 1
Damn, the teacher is a really good actor!
Poor Fish needs some stimulation
Edit, never mind, apparently he’s what’s for dinner.
I definitely got a nostalgic cold European Christmas vibe that I so dearly miss living in Nederland and England.
My theory; Viroslav wanted another bloke to come by so he could feel macho around his household because clearly, his wife emasculates him.
Per the Omeleto description:
"The ending gestures at a kind of fellowship of human suffering, through a gentle acceptance of our flaws and needs and a willingness to share company and bake bread as we mutually stumble through life."
For a lot of it I wasn't exactly sure what was going on, other than that the husband wanted to invite someone over to give him a reason to drink.
Yes I concur....and that`s before *and* after your excellent comment.
If you are transfixed while watching a film, you're probably watching Omeleto. Another great one.
No fish were harmed in the making of this video.
WTF...is going on...Was that aptitude test...then i have failed miserably.
It's definitely something different from what we usually get.
Ok, I have seen this one before. But I still really enjoyed it, kinda yelling to the main character. Lol
And of course at the end as the credits roll, yelling, haaahhh no! Don't leave me here!! So good...Thankyou so much for such an interesting odd film. Love it so much. Great casting..💙🌎

I'm sure there is a fish somewhere that you can kill!
No fish was injured during the making of this film.
yup! it was a fishpool!
It can get malevolent. There are occurrences of fish dying by drowning!
Hope not. I was sad.
So.... the old guy wants his wife to have an affair with the teacher and thus have a reason to divorce her? Anyone?
The old man also seems to have a drinking problem and uses the teacher to drink
The woman's "illness" is sleep walking i think?
Digiac OSRS nah she wasn’t sick, it was only to guilt trip him into coming over. the only sick one is the old guy
@@awescar3231 what was she doing that night in the kitchen then? When they both were asleep

Oh ... I already love this. Seeing Prag, our capital city and famous czech actors, thats amazing !
Has she done any movies in English?
Is it Prague or Prag? Or is this how it is spelt among natives
Praha is Czech, Prag is German, Prague is English.
This teacher effectively is awkward, but not as much as the situation itself.
If the fish can act that well, it’s going places
Did anyone else feel bad for the fish? 😐
I did
Yes.
Me. I'm vegan.
It's typical in Poland and Czechia. Not saying I agree with the practice, but it's a deep tradition.
Fish are food. Not friends
Or whatever that shark said
Just amazingly well done. Didn't want it to end. So many contrasting moods. Great!
This is a great modern day tale of strange expecations and then sudden intimacy. It was shocking and The Wife's presence is immense!
At first I thought the fish in the bathtub signified the lonely life of the wife. But boy when the fish got killed, I felt it related more to the poor teacher.
Now you’re getting far too philosophical. Even for Omeleto.
THEY LITERALLY JUST BROUGHT THE POOR GUY AS AN EXCUSE FOR THEM TO DO WHAT THEY WANT.
I think some people get pleasure out of embarrassing their guests.
Let me guess this teacher is so weird and awkward that his wife caught him cheating on her with the fish in his bathtub and that's why she wants a divorce.
What. The. Hell.

Glad to see Prague again and that old Stadion on top of the hill. Trust me, strange things happen in that city. *twinkle*
Vladislav and his wike seem to be playing their own separate game.
And it´s called "let´s see how uncomfortable we can make our guest." And they are both winning.
I'm actually a former butcher but I actually felt sad for the fish, special effects or not. To lighten the mood, I wonder whether they had battered fish on Boxing Day?

She has dementia or Alzheimer... its obvius... also in the bathroom there are names of her family... in the night shes doing dishes.... my aunt lives with us and has dementia and its much worse with her... she'll argue do things that dont make sense... go outside and call names from her past... always says her kids need to eat or where is her mother... her mother died 5 years ago and her kids are adults in different states... she takes noodles and eats them raw... she sees thing that are not there talks to them.... sees a little girl with something over her mouth... she says she cant breath take that off her... its sad... i never knew how scary it is... its trully horrifying actually seeing the illness in person... her husband dies 2 years ago and thats when it started but her children said she had it even before but her husband took care of her...
My mother and I took care of an old woman that was horrible with her dementia just like you’re saying. It was absolutely heart breaking.

Love it, and the small details that explain everything rock. Yes she has a drinking issue, but she's also a sleepwalker. I caught my son at our hallway window handing out fries and burgers *he worked at McDonalds*. The hallway window was on the second floor. And he had the wording, handing out the fries and burger down to a pat. Turned him around, sent him back to bed, he went right back to sleep.
Lmao🤣😂😂😂😂😂😂
Remember a prog about Sleepwalkers. A girl used to ride her motorbike. Confirmed by her landlady.
The teacher should have ran away with the mans wife😂
they probably keep the fish in the bath to purge it of its muddy taste.
It's a Czech tradition.
Very good. That is correct and where the tradition started.
11:50 I said out loud "uh oh". That cigarette sharing is dangerous.
For everyone who doesn't know, they are drinking Absinthe. Absinthe is alcoholic drink that is banned in USA (at least as I know it), and some other countries in the world.
