BOATLIFE GREECE - 5 years of FAILS & LESSONS LEARNT (our advice - don't make the these mistakes!)

- Опубліковано 19 жов 2024
- After 5 years of boat life on the ocean with all the sailing mishaps, near-misses & lesson's learnt, we have collected together some 'nuggets of gold' advice and flash back to some unseen real life events. We also share a lot of our collected experience and knowledge of what’s required to safely cruise Greece or live onboard a sail boat year round on anchor. We’d like to think that any sailor might learn something valuable in this episode that could even save someone or their boat! We have also included within this advice some of the epic upgrades we’ve made this year towards safety for Holly Blue and her crew. This includes our new Lofrans Windlass, Chain counter and anchoring equipment from Rocna, Titan and Fortress which are all available at Europes largest Marine store: SVB

Well now that i found you wonderful people ill be watching and learning!!! Found you from the Dodo
Thankyou! Enjoy! 🦋🐈🐈⬛
Brilliant episode - full of useful safety tips - for everyone. Well done guys
So happy for another SHB episode. Look forward to them each and everyone. Awesome 👍.
Lots of good info in this video. Thank you. I was eyeing the small scuba tank as I like to do a lot of search and recovery in the first atmosphere with my underwater metal detector. My 80s are probably overkill as I can be down for a VERY long time on one tank, but they are heavy. Some of the places I dive require a hike.
We love our SMACO gear…Laura specifically prefers the smaller tank because she feels less restricted in the water wearing it but I go full BCD when I’m doing work on Holly from underneath….it’s very versatile…more coming up in future episodes so keep your eyes peeled you might see something you like! 👍
Informative tips with scary close calls. Thanks guys.
Hi Guys,
Had to laugh because I’ve definitely found the hole in my boat (wallet)! Thanks so much for the tips.

Our pleasure! ❤️⚓️🦋
Learn In Tandem anchoring. You don't need a bigger anchor that you will rarely use, but 2 anchors on the same rode/chain (not separate rodes).
Great idea! 🦋
Very informative, I have also recently also purchased a Fortress anchor, which I am going to use as a kedge, what length of rope did you get for it? and did you get any chain to go with it as well? Fair winds, and keep the videos coming, cheers
Let me check! Ross is the one with those answers…he has a variety of ropes and chain to go with it. So pleased this was informative for you! It was our primary goal for this episode…🦋
The way I saw it, that big yacht was not crossing any anchors but the thing is, you never know when you are that close as somebody just might have a lot more chain out than normal. When possible, I like to ask the other boats when I come in how much they have out. You'd be surprised how many don't know.
Спасибо большое!!!
Всегда с радостью смотрю ваши видео!!!
Our family love that bay you are in (Filiatro at Ithaki) - but we can't stand the charter boat anchoring. So our solution (going back 15 years now) has been to anchor at Sarakiniko (next deep bay to the south) and use the dinghy for a visit to Filiatro. Multiple options and very little chance of charter boats anchoring across your chain.
Sarakiniko sadly equally as crazy but with less space…we went there in Sept/October for a few weeks last year and that was wonderfully quiet 🦋
@@SailingHollyBlue Yes, well, depends on time of the day perhaps, critical to be in position before , say, 7am and the 44ft scouter tender of the day's super-yacht 'reserves' the best space for the €300k per week clients... 15 years ago we could just anchor, not even need to take line ashore.
So, in five years these were all the dangerous situations you faced? Lucky guys!
Just last week I had more:
1. my chain was blocked by 3 charter boats with their chain over mine, we were stuck in the middle of the pathway of huge ferries running with speed into the port of Skopelos
2. Our windlass had its final breath, an old Simpson-Lawrence, where the casing broke. Now waiting for replacement.
etc.
etc.
I think sailing is training the ability to react to dangerous situations, stay alert and enjoy it when a problem is solved.
Haha there were many more but this would have been a LONG episode and Ross doesn’t have the time to edit that 😂. In all seriousness though this was a safety focused episode and more about advice for Greek cruising…this hasn’t touched on times when we’ve woken up to crazy unexpected swells almost sending us onto rocks or sudden squalls almost beaching us as documented in previous episodes already! Xx
Nice video.
You are amazing!
Awesome info guy! Thanks.
Thank You.
So awesome! Thank you!!
Good one
Heard your explanation about your anchor, but have to tell you that anchoring is slightly different than what you think it is. The reason an anchor drags is not because the anchor is under- or oversized, it is all about the shank of the anchor not remaining level with the sea bed and that has everything to do with the anchor chain.
Once you understand why your anchor drags you will understand what to do about it. And as a spoiler, it does not have a lot to do with the size of the anchor, it is just a mathematical equation that you will need to solve.
We dragged once in an anchorage in Corfu during a sudden storm and that was the moment I wanted to understand the mathematics about anchoring. Once I figured those out I knew what to do and since that time we have not dragged anymore. I have explained anchoring in detail on other UA-cam channels, if you want to know the ins and outs just give a shout and I will explain it. Not sure your subscribers want to read the mathematics of anchoring. 😀
Great tip about preparing the lines around the rocks when going stern to.
Thank you so much for sharing your experiences!!!
Can I please ask a couple of questions re sailing year round in Greece as a family of 4.
1. Schooling; how do you do it??
2. Safety; have you ever experienced any situation where you did not feel safe? Any dos and don'ts to keep your boat (home) safe? Places or marinas to avoid?
3. Your kittens; have you had issues with mice or rats ever?
Thank you so much!!!
Hey! We used to homeschool before secondary age and now use Minerva Virtual Academy which is an online school who use Cambridge Curriculum and are AMAZING with a focus on wellbeing and high standard education. Josh has adhd/autism so it’s been incredible for him as they have a high level of focus on SENDS…
Safety…if you mean security we can honestly say that Greece is incredibly safe and we have never had issues there…some reports of tenders being stolen here and there but not that we’ve encountered in the entire 5 years aboard here! Just be sure to lock up well and when it comes to marinas to avoid we honestly can’t say as we have always chosen marinas based on their good reputation but nowadays spend the whole year on anchor.
Our cats are now a couple years old and no we have never encountered mice or rats.

Good afternoon to Holly blue family
I lived on a narrowboat in the UK for 10 years..
Your analogy of hole on pocket I understand the phrase BOAT buing on another thousand was used in narrowboat life..
I changedmy life in 2016 and moved to Spain I now own an embroidery business making uniform and gift clothing.. thanks for your content followed you since this year and watched your older vlogs. You're a beautiful family

@@SailingHollyBlue thanks for replying have a great week ❤️
@@frankhughes4775 you too! 🤗
Hi from Snullertoo the UK boat anchored next to you at Filiatro beach.
Hey! 🤩🤩🤩
It would be a very good idea for you to have a fire extinguisher specifically for lithium ion battery fires. Extinguishers containing F-500 EA will do the job.
Lithium Ion or LiFePO4 batteries ? There is a huge difference. Lithium Ion is something I would not want to have onboard, LiFePO4 we do have onboard, 1400 Ah to be exact and it is 100 % safe.
In a side note…… wow Laura!
Thanks guys! 😊
Great discussion of a very important subject. Personally, I'd like more "privacy" when I anchor, but it appears that that option is not always available in ihe Ionian
You can find it but just have to go out of the height of season or get savvy about where the special spots are! 🦋⚓️
Only married a year and lost my wedding ring swimming back to Zeus Too in a bay around Kalymnos. Spent the rest of the holiday with a 3 euro ring until I could get it replaced. Lucky they still had all the details as we had our rings engraved in Greek. Funny thing is I still wear the 3 euro ring on my other hand lol.
No way! 😂 hope you guys are well xx
Not as well as you guys lol. Fly out to Kos 9/8 for 10 nights on Zeus Too can’t wait. Ps I now take my ring off every time we go for a swim or paddle board lol
I had so much fum about 50 years ago! My boyfriend and i and my 2 dogs lived on a 42ft wooden criss craft house boat,no sails! We traveled up and down the east coast of USA all year round for about 2 years!!only 1 thing i was adamant about was docking or anchor over at a Marina!! I was afraid of pirates! Was wondering have you had any probs with that????
No pirates over here in Greece in fact we have never come across any security issues or felt unsafe in all the 5 years we've cruised this area...lets hope this continues to be the case.
@@SailingHollyBlue I think it was my insecurity, to this day I don't know why I feared that! Maybe I had a bad dream and it stuck it my head, lol,I really have no idea! But boating with my dogs were the best fun I've ever had on a boat🤫
Oh wanted to tell you my ex bf Dad was from Greece made the best Greek macaroni or pasta with feta cheese lots if oil and butter💝
How convenient! They sent an email the next day! Wow.........
100% divine intervention…know it’s hard to believe (we couldn’t either) but this actually happens a-lot for us!
So Laura! Let me get this straight! Ross tells you he's going fishing, than buys some fish instead he goes to the Pub! Now he's not wearing his Wedding Ring, i don't know! ( lol) "Cool Cat" never seen a Cat that likes water and swims! Dean( Soul)Toronto
Hahaha yea somethings not adding up now you mention it! 🧐 😂⚓️
Groovy and quite informative episode. Do you find other boaters moving closer to your boat when you go on the front of your boat to workout? Giggles!
😂😂😂😂🤪😜
I’d get rid of the powder extinguishers, they are unsafe in a close environment. You want class B co2. Trust me, I’ve been in close proximity to a powder extinguisher going off and it crippled my lungs for weeks, I’d hate to think what it could do to little ones lungs. Please take professional advice, not just from someone flogging them.
Is the only reason for tying onto the rocks to allow more boats (kind of a Med moor) in the anchorage? If not it seems that it is better to let the boat swing and let the pointy end face the wind.
Not always the main reason - there are many - we like stern to because it provides stability when we want to work, easier access to land for Laura in any conditions, a little back yard for the kids to play and through the busier summer months certainly helps too 👍
@@SailingHollyBlue And the cat has a shorter swim to the boat.
@@dennisgingrich4963 very true! 🐈❤️👍
IMHO, in order, these are the best overall anchors: Bulwagga (now sold in Turkey), Mantus, Rocna, Ultra, and I wouldn't trust anything else as a main anchor. Best storm anchors (used with other anchors): Fortress, Danforth, Max, Mantus, nothing else.
A Bulwagga with a Mantus and 2 very large Fortress storm anchors is what I like to keep. Bulwagga the main anchor. The Mantus and Fortress can be dismantled for storage. You need a good backup main because, well, people like to steal anchors. The Bulwagga sets better than anything. Mantus is the second best setting anchor out there and holds better than the Bulwagga so it's a pretty good main anchor too which is what I am currently using as a main anchor. They don't make a Bulwagga for a 55' boat.
When the wind picks up, especially with a wind shift, ALWAYS go on deck, not just to watch your boat, but all the others too. I've been in blows where every boat not using a new gen anchor dragged including a 100 million dollar sailing yacht and several 200' fishing vessels. For this reason, I am not a fan of deploying stern anchors and ropes and would rather anchor out father if I can. Not being able to quickly get away from others can be a big problem.
Do you remember me i was at ithaca beach and i said remember me to you
Hahaha YES!
