Exploring a Native American Indian Burial Ground

- What Native American tribe did the Pilgrims meet? The Nobscussett were the first tribe to meet the Mayflower Pilgrims. The number of burials here is unknown. Even the exact dates of usage are lost from historical record. The chief Mashantampaine who is believed buried here was born in the early 17th century.
Did the Pilgrims get along with the natives? The Indigenous people of the area which we now call Cape Cod, were engaged in beaver skin trade with both England and France. In the year 1614, English Captain Thomas Hunt captured more than 20 Nobscussett people and brought them to Spain, to sell as slaves. The captures outraged the Nobscussett and they stopped the trading. In the years 1618 through 1619, a plague killed most of the Nobscussett. It is believed the burning of the dead from this plague marks the origin of this Burial Ground.

Nice! Most can't be found. Chase cemetery, my family's lineage plot in Freetown has an Indian burialground nearby but on private farm land but our ancestors actually intermarried
We have a 17th to 18th century native burial ground in our town. It is on a knoll in the forest surrounded by low, wet ground and mixed hardwoods. There are no grave markers at this site either. Across the old road, in the woods nearby, is an early cemetery that was used by both the white settlers and their free black neighbors, beginning in the early 1700s. It is unusual to have this kind of integration in one area. The last member of the Aspetuck tribe died in the late 1800s and there is a photograph of him at Town Hall.

This was so fascinating, will definitely look up Captain Hunt. The only Indian tribe I am familiar with on the Cape are the Wampanoag Indians, located in Mashpee. They have a cemetery off Falmouth Road or rt. 28, or it's their council center. Cannot remember which. Also, you may know this book title, "Mayflower" by Nathaniel Philbrick. It outlines in great detail the Pilgrims relationship with the Indians and Prince Philips War. Any chance you could do a drive on Rt 6A this summer? Or maybe you already did one. Im metis in Canada and went and worked out in Fort McMurray in 2019 when the floods happened there my father tells me not to go there anymore because he believes its cursed land. There's been floods and fires happening so much there.

So, in Kansas, there is a tradition, where important people, are buried, and a honey locust is planted on their body.
So, their soul will go into the tree, and become a part of it, and when you eat the seeds of that tree, you can recieve cultural information.
