Thanks for the update Mike, I nearly hit the buy button a few times on this rig... then I stopped to think what I really wanted, I see it's on offer at the moment for £599 but for an extra £350 could pick up a second hand FT991A from a dealer with some warranty, although this is a little bit bigger rig than I like - I know they are two completely different rigs but I wanted to have a play with Fusion but with the 991 you get some big extra features... Like you say I think Yaesu has missed a trick. We need a replacement for FT857 or that sort of size which includes C4FM & 4m all mode.. We can dream!
I have never used c4fm.. but I was looking at getting this to try it out.. but after watching, I think I am with you.. I will hold out for a 991a, even tho I think I would prefer a separate rig for hf vhf/uhf.. in the shack. I have the ft- 857d in the car. and FT-450D at home.
I don't understand why Yaesu doesn't put wideband receive into their mobiles - I enjoy monitoring CB, 4m/6m etc. My FT-3D can receive anywhere from 522KHz up!
Mike nice summary on the 500/ I am still trying to get my 400 set up I think my Ft5 has had more outings than the 400, cheers for the update M7CVK Tony
Nice update on the 500 it lovely radio I would love to have this set it just bit pricey for me I'll just stick with my 300 and 400 hopefully the price will drop on the 500 in the future. Great video you've put out cheers.
its kinda quite arround icom. after the 7300 nothing really significant came out. I would expect an successor to the 7300 after all these years but nothing.
So when your holding down the BAND + FUNC+POWER? does this wideband the radio to transmit on PMR 446? ive seen videos on MARS mods for the FTM 300 but they have to take the radio apart and de solder some component? But are you saying with the FTM 500 that you just have to do what your showing in the video to mars mod it?
Mike, Thanks for the overview and "how to" on some of the undocumented features, definetly useful especially for Doing some mobile ISS work with regard to the crossband repeat. One item Ive seen twice since owning my FTM500 since July, on 2 different occasions Ive observed the radio display up in the right hand corner of the gray notification bar the battery voltage. At first I just thought I was seeing something strange then the second time I saw it I knew it was giving a batt voltage. Just curious if you have seen this or can you tell me how to toggle it to display on command. wonder how many easter eggs are on this radio we'll never know about. Thanks
@@madmagrider Thank you for that tip. Went out to the truck and did the procedure as you described worked. My truck may sit for a few days, and when it's cold I really like to know what my batt volts are. My old FT-8500 had a easy to access function for batt volts and this radio replaced it. So much radio in a small package thanks again. 73's
Since this post , mine died. It went back to Lynch’s who sent it to Yaesu in Winchester, where it has sat from beginning of September, til the beginning of December . They’ve only just decided they can’t fix it. No
Thanks for the info, much prefer the old style menu layout! and I didn't realise this radio was able to do x-band 🙂 bonus! one thing I wish and no doubt along with many other 500 users is that Yaesu would add SSB, surely it could be a simple FW update to add SSB!? @Yaesu? #Yaesu #FTM-500DE
Thanks Mike, excellent video. I was wondering whether to splash out and get myself one of these, but after this video my mind is made up to pass this one by. If I want an APRS mobile rig, I'll shop for a "second-ham'd" FTM-400 or similar. Cheers, Jan (M7HNK)
I have the 500 and 400. The 400 is better mobile still because of that big screen IMO. The 500 is beautifful, but why the hell they can't implement memory banks in mobile radio's just makes me wonder. They did it in a £400 HT, and don't in a £630 mobile. It's crazy. Thanks for the great video Mike. 73 2E0GKF
It's a completely different radio and incompatible with US or EU bands. And the Japanese market radios can't be flashed with other region's firmware. Don't buy one just because they're less expensive.
I bought a Yaesu FTM-500D Japanese version, I'm in the United States, I can't transmit at 146.500mhz, it says TX PROHIBITED> I've already tried the tips in the video and I can't, can anyone help?°
Totally depends on where you live. There are a bunch of *active* 2m/70cm repeaters where I am - FM, fusion and DMR - and some simplex on 2m. Also lots of APRS. Plus there's all the other bands! If you truly think amateur radio is dead, why are you wasting your own time watching and commenting on this video?
Where I am in northern NV, it seems like very few folks are still on 2m repeaters and have gone over to 440. I've been out of ham radio for over 20 years and just decided to get back in. My old Yaesu 2600M mobile was programmed to bunches of 2m repeaters here. I just got a new ARRL repeater guide and see that NONE of the frequencies I had in my old radio show up in the new guide.
The thing is with my schedule, nobody is on 2M or 70cm when I commute. I'm not talking about people already being on, but people not even responding on the repeater or 520. They just have their nets and turn their radios off immediately apparently.

They should give us P25 reception :D.
Thank you for the video and information. The best part for me about the FTM-500 is the audio is much better than the FTIM-400.
Totally agree!

Why do the manufacturers include Cross-Band Repeat as a feature and put absolutely NOTHING about it in the manuals?
So when your holding down the BAND + FUNC+POWER? does this wideband the radio to transmit on PMR 446? ive seen videos on MARS mods for the FTM 300 but they have to take the radio apart and de solder some component? Nope, you have to remove the resistor as per in the video to "wideband" the radio.
The menu change is genius. Why Yaesu kept that hidden is a mystery

Found mine to be a little odd, as far as the display, I will try to do so investigation.
You can display the battery voltage, but you have to do it every time you power up.
@@madmagrider any chance you could share the procedure to display the battery voltage on startup.
@@texbaz2 Press GM+Function when powering up the radio.

Glad it helped, the FTM400 is still number one in my book, well if you take Kenwood out of the equation that is.
@@mike-M0MSN I have no experience with Kenwood as a brand, so will have to do some research.

Could you show how quick and easy the new APRS message typing method works?
Sorry I do not really use the messaging system. :(
So the wideband doesn't open the radio up to 10 and 11 meter?
Why are you sittin in the wrong seat mister... 😂
New firmware was released on 1st August Mike.
I still say the digital systems sound very odd, Dstar was the same. Looks a great little rig.
So far looks the same as my ftm300
Does it give you gmrs?
You still in France..??
Yes mate, I mean Oui
What is this thing with people making videos in their cars?
lol
its a lot of money for a radio that cannot do ssb usb and cw etc. i will stick to my ft991a . 73s PD0ROH
600+pounds?!? They are being sold domestically in Japan for around 350pounds. That's one heck of a markup by UK vendors.
I guess with import tax and shipping £450….. I don’t think the retailers are making much the radio is simply to expensive
I just got mine for $450 in Sacramento.

Just paid £430 for mine, inc £70 rebate fronm Yaesu.
O radio tem seus problemas, cabo de microfone muito ruim tivessem colocado um conector DIM seria melhor que o RJ , sem medidor de ROE , etc...
sim eu concordo
I paid 455 pounds UK from martin Lynch brand new 3 months ago.

600 quid to listen to what. only ever hear a hand full of amateurs on 2mtrs and never hear anything on 70cms. ham radio is dead.
