  • The Crystal Radio was the dream of many young kids in the mid 20th century, but they date back to before the 1920's and were surprisingly well suited for the radio transmissions of that era. Their prices definitely made radio reception a reality for adults and kids alike. While Tubes won out due to audio volume and selectivity, Crystal Radios are still very functional as an AM receiver. We delve into some of the history of this Steinite model, radio theory as it pertains to crystal radios, and actually hook this Steinite Long Range Crystal Radio model to an antenna and headphones to hear it function.

A plain old germanium diode works well. I remember making one with an oatmeal box. Amazing how well they work

As a boy I remember crystal radios advertised in comic books.
Great fun watching you demonstrating the working so that lovely Steinite set.

A most enjoyable and interesting video. As a boy I built crystal radios from a book my father bought me. The boys book of crystal sets. I still have that book dated from 1966.

This crystal set brings back memories when I was in 8th grade. It was 1970 and we built a crystal radio in industrial arts class. I remember I had to come up with 35 cents to buy the diode. Thanks for posting. I enjoy your channel.

Hey Bennie ... I built one too a couple of years before you did. I found the plans in a book in the school library. A lot of fun building and listening to them.

That crystal radio came out the same year my dad was born 1924. Interesting story about Steinite lol

Nice Informative video brings back memories of making various "Experimental" Crystal radio sets during '50's & early '60's.....The classic "Cat's Whisker" Galena Detector, one of the 1st used radio demodulators, is actually a Point Contact semiconductor, used Before vacuum Tubes !!....Seemingly Lost to history, there existed Reliable reports of early radio Experimenters Adding a 2nd Cat Whisker Contact (total of 3 device wire leads) connected to a bias Battery, providing significant Demodulated audio Gain.....That's remarkably Similar to a modern N-P-N or P-N-P semiconductor gain device !!.....As Most electronic radio devices (including vacuum tube) were Accidential discoveries, It's amazing to consider the Possibility of Accidential discovery of 3 electrode semiconductor devices with Gain during radio's Earliest days !!!

I read that a crystal radio has the purest audio as it has so few components. Almost none. I have had several over many years. Great channel!!

People still build them from time to time as a hobby thing to do.
It is a good project for a weekend because you can get it done in about that much time.

Short circuit of the unused turns of the inductance dampens heavily the circuit. I think the slider of the inductance should be connected to ground but not to the variable capacitor.
I started in electronics with crystal radios, in 1963.
