Zulu Mardi Gras Parade 2019

  • The Zulu King for 2019 is George V. Rainey. Zulu’s characters for 2019 will be LeBaron Fisher as Zulu Big Shot, Troy Daliet as Zulu Witch Doctor, Gregory Lucien as Zulu Ambassador, Darren G. Mire as Zulu Mayor, Everette Briscoe as Zulu Province Prince, Barrin W. David as Zulu Governor and James A. Mitchel as Zulu Mr. Big Stuff.
    Early in 1909, a group of laborers in a club named “The Tramps” went to the Pythian Theater to see a musical comedy that included a skit entitled, "There Never Was and Never Will Be a King Like Me" about the Zulu Tribe. According to legend, after seeing the skit, they retired to their meeting place (a room in the rear of a restaurant/bar in the 1100 block of Perdido Street), and emerged as Zulus. The rest, as they say, is history. Years of extensive research by Zulu's staff of historians, however, seem to indicate that Zulu's beginning was much more complicated than that.
    Conversations and interviews with older members indicate that, back in the day, the city was divided into wards, and each ward had its own group or “Club.” The Tramps were one such group. The group that founded Zulu was probably made up of both members from the Tramps and other ward-based groups and members of a Benevolent Aid Society. Benevolent Societies were the first forms of insurance in the Black community. For a small amount of dues, members received financial help when they got sick or there was a funeral to pay for.
    While the men marched in Mardi Gras as early as 1901, their first appearance as Zulus came in 1909, with William Story as King. The group wore raggedy pants, and had a Jubilee-singing quartet in front of and behind King Story. His costume of "lard can" crown and "banana stalk" scepter has been well-documented. The Kings following William Story in the early days were similarly attired.
    The year 1915 heralded the first use of floats, constructed on a spring wagon, using dry good boxes. The float was decorated with palmetto leaves and moss and carried four Dukes along with the King. That humble beginning gave rise to the lavish floats we see in the Zulu parade today.
    Today Zulu is famous for their coconut throw - quite possibly the most coveted throw in all of Mardi Gras. Zulu’s honor guard is called the Soulful Warriors; and they have characters including Big Shot, Witch Doctor, Ambassador, Mayor, Province Prince, Governor and Mr. Big Stuff.
    The most famous Krewe of Zulu king was Louis Armstrong who reigned in 1949.

      @@roybabineaux5353 There is no celebration here Roy. This is Mockery. I am a Nguni girl, a direct descendent of Shaka Zulu and I have never seen a Zulu person looking like that. Why didn't they use brown paint? How do you honor culture by misrepresenting it? This might be funny to Americans but to us Zulus, this is a disgrace and infuriating. I would love to see a real Zulu who feels honored by this ridiculousness. Ngamanyala la!

      @@mariamacandrew90 The Zulu parade begin when it was illegal for blacks to celebrate anything in 1901. You're looking at it from one point of view which is understandable, but it's been hashed out since the 60's it literally was to mock the minstrel shows not the Zulus. The king and queen of the Zulus never wears face paint and always dress to the 9's. It is called the Zulu parade because Zulus were the only ones at the time standing up against British rule and fighting back. And I'm sorry that your culture is being used as a play toy.

      @@mariamacandrew90 with Google and UA-cam, I’m surprised you didn’t do your research on the Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club before passing such harsh judgement! Here, that remark would be considered terribly racist. We don’t waste our time being infuriated, and we only have one rule here: BE NICE OR LEAVE.
      BYE

    • @mariamacandrew90
      @mariamacandrew90 2 роки тому

      At Nancy Whitty you missed the fact that all three comments above yours are from Zulu speaking people. Dont let my names fool you I am a Nguni descendent. Nothing infuriates me like seeing my cultures potrayed incorrectly. Judging from previous commentors,most feel the same. If you were so triggered by my comment on America and google then think about how a misrepresentation on other cultures could be triggering. Call it what you want but I will still add my respectful honest and sincere comment, that is just uncool. We need to start respecting each other and each others cultures and values and not continue pepertuating practices no matter how they seem funny and enjoyable to you especially those that degrade, misrepresent or might seem insulting to other cultures. By the way I know a lot of Americans that were infuriated too when we watched that march together. We need to respect each others cultures, that is the only way we can continue building a truly inclusive society based on mutual respect. The intentions of that club might have been pure however, the ability to stop and assess the impact on others, how others feel about certain things we do especially withim the conexto f culture where we are still learning to coexist in a diverse world while honouring our different cultures, things like these need to be really looked at. If others are triggered by it especially those who value the misrepresented people, culture or practice, we need to be open to hear them. While you might say you are not triggered, I am aware my comment on Americans and Google was triggering so I will ho ahead and appologise for them because I realise I said something that challenges, maybe infuriates others. Having said that, when a particular practise offends, we need to try and understand why are people offended. Then we will be on our way to building truly inclusive, respectful societies. By the way I am Gugulenkosi. That is my African name. And by the way English is my 7th language so if anything is wrong in there just edit as you go along.

      Joe T if you check the original history of Blackface, you’ll see that before our ancestors were brought to Amerikkka, in the Mother Land, they used to paint their faces black for several different reasons. They’d paint their faces to defend their territory, they’d paint their faces for the birth of a baby, they’d paint their faces for MANY different things. When we were forced here, ‘they’ had prior knowledge of Blackface and made it into something to be made fun of.
