Momo is a great example of a well written bossgirl archetype. supportive and likeable, a stark contrast to the garbage coming from holiwood. where they do more harm than good to THE MESSAGE. makes me want to drop kick the holiwood writers FOR GENDER EQUALITY
11:00 this is what actually made me respect Jiji's character, he is scared, doesn't know Momo has powers (at least that can protect her), bearly (doesn't) understands the spiritual stuff, can't register what's happening but protected Momo with 0 hesitation or powers of his own 14:52 It's even more than being inspired. This is *the* moment Ken finally understood his feelings aren't of fiendship
@@complicatedkavi8598 I absolutely do. After ep 10 I just had to read the manga, and I immidiately loved him, I thought he was really funny and had an interesting story, but this exact moment made me respect him sooo much. Don't know if it was more clear how scared he was in the manga or what but I was soooo shocked to see everyone react so differently from how I did.
It’s truly heartwarming to see how much people’s Japanese listening skills have improved since anime became popular worldwide. Watching FLEXIE suddenly respond in Japanese during reactions is also a joy-they seem to understand quite a lot!
I loved how Okarun straightened his posture during that last scene when he realized his feelings. He is usually hunched over, showing he has no confidence.
The literal "never give up" attitude of Taro was exactly the thing Okarun needed to hear in a moment where he was about to give up his "friendship" with Momo. He's realized she's important to him for a while, but I still don't think he's crossed that line into the realization that he loves her at this point because he hasnt advanced enough emotionally to see it. He's still in that defensive mentality that someone with no friends builds up as a wall to avoid the pain of suddenly being abandoned by a new friend let alone a love. She called him out on it in the second episode and I think this is a growth moment for him to start breaking that cycle.
In Japanese schools, there are tales called ghost stories. Among them, there is often a story about a model doll that tends to move around in the middle of the night. In Japan, we believe that everything has a soul and power, and we cherish them. This is true of everything from a pebble to a mountain, and even a hair comb or sewing needle can be imbued with a soul after many years of use.
I think Jiji is basically the anti Aira. (Early Aira) I think he knows he's hot and is genuinely trying to make girls feel better about themselves by flirting with them. He's a goofball, but also a total sweetheart up to the current manga chapter.
so far I think my favorite scene of the series is the 2 minute section of episode 5 where they are longing for each other and then begin searching for each other during lunchtime ending with the teeth clacking
The sequence of events must be crazy. 1. The school bio department got a new mannequin. 2. Both mannequins became haunted. 3. The ghosts fell in love. 4. It's Garbage Day. The school tosses the female mannequin. 5. The male mannequin despairs for his love. 6. He finds a golden ball plucked by Turbo Granny. 7. He runs. 7a. He runs good.
How in the hell did that anatomical mannequin manage to get Okarun's other ball!!? I don't even care, it's Dandadan and everything is chaos and I am happy.
I love how these two "love rivals" are written. Okarun is an insecure, shy guy. Then comes Jiji who seems confident and very outgoing. Momo as wholesome as she is, she used to push Okarun away just because she still wasn't sure about her own feelings. And then Aira happened. Once she got a crush on Okarun, she was so forward, not shy away from expressing her feelings to him at all. She might have appeared to be somewhat of an obstacle, but she wasn't. Her being so straightforward urged Momo to be more straightforward too. With Okarun and Jiji, I expect the same from Okarun. He's gonna try to express his feelings for Momo better from now.
THIS. I love the romantic rivalry in which the rival characters are written to actually help the development of the main couple instead of just there for being an obstacle with no substance. I guess Yukinobu Tatsu's editor forcing him to read 100 romance manga really comes to fruition for stuff like this lol
Love your thoughts on jiji 💞 truth is, lots of people find him annoying cuz he’s so extra (I don’t blame them cuz his silliness is like x10 times when animated with voice and excessive movements), but you make a good point that he doesn’t seem to care what others think of him and is very authentic and sincere to himself and people around him, which is why I love him so much. Little spoiler but it makes sense why he and Okarun would make such good friends, especially when Okarun has insecurities and Jiji is there just being nonjudgmental and unconditionally kind to people around him
15:46 So true. That scene was based on the end of the fifth movie of Urusei Yatsura "Boy meets Girl". Urusei Yatsura was a very chaotic anime series (not dissimilar from Dandadan), very famous in Japan in the eighties, that inspired multiple authors over time. The main female character, Lum, is still famous nowadays, so much that the manga has been re-adapted recently (although it is much less chaotic than the old one). The fifth movie is the very emotional adaptation of the conclusion of the story, which based on the manga of Rumiko Takahashi, the same author of Ranma 1/2 and InuYasha. Of note, Hana, the female mannequin was voiced by the same voice actor who voiced Lum back in the eighties, Fumi Hirano.
The "creatures" in the 2nd half are anatomical mannequins used in classes like biology. I am expecting to end next episode on a cliffhanger, although I can't guess where, exactly (I'm caught up in the manga). Hopefully the rumors that we'll have the 2nd half of the season next summer are true.
The rumors better be true, at this pace not only is this season gonna end on a cliffhanger, it's gonna be one in the middle of an arc (I'm also caught up with the manga)
I think Okarun is a very realistic portrayal of low self-esteem and negative self-talk. As outside observers, we can clearly see Momo cares deeply for him, but he can’t see it. It’s a vicious cycle that can be hard to escape from. I do wonder a lot about what Okarun’s home-life and family must be like. They don’t have to be bad (plenty of people with low self-esteem come from loving families), but I imagine there will be a narrative connection between his upbringing and the way he views himself.
18:50 that's the amazing part about Jiji. He doesn't need character development. It's the greatest subversion of our expectations they could have pulled off. Dude is the ultimate bro.
Love Okarun standing up tall at the end there as he takes in what Taro is telling Hana and relates it to himself. It’s so obvious to the audience that the crush is mutual and Okarun has nothing to worry about but Momo is in denial still too I mean she still can’t even say his real name lol so bummed next week is the last ep for now the next arc is one of the best
You'll get comments about this (somebody from Japan already asked) but the mannequin thing is literally that. You get one in every Japanese school so they're basically a trope over there. Obviously not so much in the US-we get mannequins but they vary in completeness (usually a torso only), are sometimes just a fake skeleton, and certainly don't universally present onlookers with an unnerving rictus.
I'm anime only, so I don't know how the Biology guy appearance gets sorted next ep, but the situation reminds me of the old song "Kaw-Liga" By Hank Williams. An OLD Country song about a carved wooden Indian statue used to sell cigars back in the old days. There's a female carving as well in the store and he falls in love with her but can tell her because, well he's a statue. I think the girl statue gets sold and leaves Kaw-Liga to lament. Maybe same deal here except she's thrown away and this time the golden ball let him come to life and chase her down.
That’s a cool story. As a manga reader I’ll say this most characters shown in the show aren’t one offs and will be of some help or importance to the story. It’s cool to have seen another yokai possess something not human like turbo granny. And even the minor characters will pop up even though this series and characters feel like a random fever dream half the time.
Jiji, standing in front of the human specimen doll at the waste disposal site, is wearing his jacket in an unusual way; this is the way children in Japan do when imitating the Kaiju "Jamilla" from the special effects TV show "Ultraman." The orange clothing worn by Momo's teacher is the uniform of the Science Special Search Party, which also appears in Ultraman, and the English teacher in Okarun's class is wearing the uniform of the Ultra Guard, which appears in Ultra Seven. Even the details of the buses and red cars that can be seen briefly around town are drawn with more attention to detail than necessary. You can tell that the animation production team had fun drawing this.
