I remember when i first came across your videos when I was watching a the MAD MAX movies and got curious about some info about certain stuff about the film like the car, the world before the break down and so on. Hell, you were gon for like what, a year or two and I honestly thought that was it. you were done. life or whatever responsibilities you got just took too much of your time and you just moved on yet here you are. dropping some insane facts about the movie, comics and other stuff that literally never seen the light of day. Love you videos man. Seriously, keep up the amazing work. Yeah, this Mad Max thing was never a fad with me, I've been collecting info about those movies from commonly available sources for a long time until the well dried up and there was no other way but to dig deeper until I just couldn't have all that info rattle around in my head so I stated making videos about this stuff. It's the same with Melvin except he writes books about this stuff, and Adrian has a whole museum. Hopefully my videos open people's eyes on how rich the Mad Max fandom is and how deep the lore goes, so I really appreciate your comment, it means that this is all going in the right direction :)
Dog's legacy lives on in the Fallout universe's "Dogmeat" (who in all except for Fallout 3 is immortal), Rex in Fallout New Vegas (who is a stand-in for Dogmeat) and "Dinky Di" from the Mad Max game. I forget the name of a steampunk rpg game I played once (it was about 5 computers ago), but it also features an overt nod to Dog. Also, it's good to know he had a good life after the movie.
I grew up in the central valley of rural California, USA. I had a Blue Healer when I was a kid that I named Dog! In this case, I named him after the Dog in a John Wayne movie, Big Jake. He was literally my play companion and we would explore everywhere and everything together. We spent every free moment together. He was smart, intuitive and a true friend. I miss him very much even 40+ years later.
Dog's final moments might have been faked but that's exactly what an Australian Cattle dog would do IRL. They are so loyal and fearless, they will put themselves in harm's way to protect their owner. My Blue, Snoop would protect my younger son when his older brother would play fight with him but I wouldn't want to see a stranger do something like that. Snoop saw me as her alpha and she'd do anything for me. When my older son died, she knew when I was upset, I'd never known an animal who was so intuitive. She was the best dog I ever had, a true friend, irreplaceable and I miss her dearly.
Great that you got to have the Bluey experience as a kid given you grew up in the US. A mate who is a copper here is Aus who told me how Blueys are so loyal that police and emergency Services sometimes have trouble getting to a driver who has been killed in a motor accident because a freaked out Bluey in the vehicle won't let anyone get near his boss. Blueys are pretty special dogs.
We all miss our dogs, but what happiness they bring to our lives. I'm 60 now and have a Staffordshire bull terrier, cross English mastiff....Gus, is the most gentle intelligent and loving dog I've ever had. He's 7 now and I've decided he will be my last (if I out live him?) As nothing could replace him.
@@michealgillman7418I know that feeling. I turned 45 the other day, have had dogs all my life, and never went longer than a year in between them. But my last died 3 years ago this August. She was just one of the special ones. All dogs have their words and commands they know and their own personalities but sometimes you get one that just stands a little above the others. This one knew more words than any I ever had. I have no idea how I did it but I taught her to sneeze on command. I dunno maybe a million people have done that but it was just the damndest thing. And she knew when I was cutting her favorite "healthy snack," green peppers. I could lay out various vegetables in the kitchen and start chopping onions and zucchini and carrots and she didn't care (though she did love carrots). But as soon as I'd cut into a pepper she'd run in. And it wasn't a smell thing, I would trick her sometimes and cut very slowly and quietly and she wouldn't come (I always shared eventually of course). But when she heard the sound of a green pepper on the board it was on. I could go on and on but point being, some are truly just irreplaceable.
Dog was the most underrated sidekick. I'm glad he was loved and adopted. Too many movie animals get mistreated, it warms me to know the crew really took the extra effort to treat him well.
I will write down the comment from the previous upload. I found Dog's story to be very interesting because I just thought it was as simple as finding a dog and training him for the film. Dog the Australian shepherd dog, the Wasteland Heeler who only had 1 day left to live became the co-star of Mad Max 2. A good boy with a big heart till the end, may he still roam the sandy beaches chasing scarves and rubber snakes.
that's a genuinely good ending for that dog, and it doesnt surprise me that the cast got so attached to him, one of my favorite behind the scenes stories about the first John Wick film is that after the camera was done rolling when they did the whole fake death scene of the dog, all the guys just ran to the dog and gave it a hug lol also I'm glad George was careful not to put that ad in the paper, as he's right, people WOULD have done that
We got a blue heeler (after 4 labs) because my husband wanted the Mad Max dog. Riley is a handful but smart as a whip, protective & loyal, with a strong stubborn streak. He’s affectionate & a cuddler, too. But this boy was born to run & is happiest let loose to explore the world around him. my hubs gives him rides on the snowmobile & he sits there like a real trooper ❤❤
Yeah, doesn’t it just make so much sense to get a heeler once you’ve had a bunch of Labs? I’m still very much a Lab guy and retrievers in general but since I adopted my little brat of a heeler I’m hooked. My girl is intense, stubborn and mega-intelligent but she’s also the best cuddler in my pack. She has slept next to my head literally every night for the past 5 1/2 years she has owned me. Not the breed for everyone but worth the adventure.
When I was a kid my dad brought home a blue heeler puppy, we named her nipper for her biting. When she was mostly grown, she was run over chasing the tires on his truck as he was driving in the yard and had to be put down. I think I only ever saw my dad cry three times, once for my Grandma's funeral, once for my cousins funeral, and when he was digging the hole out back for nipper.
As a big fan of Mad Max, I find "background" documentaries like this fascinating. Thanks for posting! I was particularly impressed by the factoid about the scene where the Gyro Captain, Max, and the dog return to the gyrocopter, and find the dead man. That most of dialogue and action by Bruce Spence and the dog was improvised.
Thanks so much for researching this. As an Aussie I grew up with the Mad Max movies and like many others, can't get enough trivia about these iconic films. Great that "Dog" was in reality a tyre chasing rascal recidivist Bluey on Death Row at the pound who got saved on the condition he submit to a vasectomy - and in spite of the fact his proven hatred of cars was undiminished - went on to became an ICON of Australian road movies....😂
I got the opportunity of being best friends with a Female Blue heeler named Bella. I can say hands down those 10 years were the best years of my life! She went everywhere I went including work everyday. I'm adopted so she was the closest thing I've ever had to a family..... it's been 2 years since she passed and my life has withered without her 😔

I lost my GSD when I was 13. I swore never to have another dog but when I saw mad max 2 in the 80s the dog impressed me so much it stayed in my memory didn’t know anything about the breed. Fast forward to 2010 or so my kids were pestering me for a dog so I agreed saying ok we will get one but it has to be an ACD. Thinking that I was being clever I’d never seen one in the UK now I have 2, one in on my shoulder as I type and the other is on my feet. Amazing dogs.
I had an Australian Shepard that very much fits the personality of the "dog" in this story, and like Dog he was a rescue but he was only about 4 months old when I got him, he was absolutely fearless he was adored by everyone everywhere we went and all the other dogs wanted to be like him, it was amazing the way he'd take over as the leader when you'd take him around an established pack of dogs, in 5 minutes he'd be the new alpha, he just had this energy and charm that was infectious that made him 100% rock star everywhere we went, and he was a little f%&ker, he was always into something or doing something that was borderline criminal, I used to say all the time "I swear that little f$#ker's one little mustache away from invading Poland". The stories about him are endless and epic to put it mildly, like the time he battled it out with an Osprey in our back yard over a fish the bird had caught in the river that was just downstream from a creek in a gully behind out house, poor thing landed in our backyard just wanting to eat it's lunch after working so hard to get it but it ended up sitting on a limb that overhung our backyard screeching and watching Hunter run around tossing his fish up in the air taunting him with it, of course it wound up on my roof and I had to get a ladder out before it turned into a fishcicle because it was the middle of winter, or the time my girlfriend at the time was planting flowers at the same time he was running laps around the house and everytime he came galloping through the flower garden he'd snatch one she'd just planted and then turn around not understanding why she didn't seem to be making any progress, I was watching through a window laughing my ass off through the whole thing barely able to contain myself, after about the third one she turned and saw him running around the corner of the house with that flower hanging out of his mouth and started screaming, just like the Osprey did. I've had some dogs in my life but there'll never be another one like him, he was one of those personalities you run across once in a lifetime if you're lucky and I'll always thank my lucky stars that I got to share his life with a part of mine, when him and I were living in that house I consider them to be the best years of my life, I love my dogs I have now but there'll never be another one like him. Hunter passed away about a year before I moved out of that house and back to my home state of Pennsylvania, everyone said I should have had him cremated so I could keep him with me but I felt burying him up there in the yard at the edge of the gully behind the house was more appropriate, he loved that place and was always standing guard over it and me, and it was the best kind of place for him to live with it's huge yards he had to run around in and always "monitor", oh yea it was his place and he had no quams about letting anyone know it was, God rest his soul.
@@paulnapper6182 Who said Australian Shepard's were? I simply said I had an Australian Shepard that had a personality quite a bit like Dog's from the description of him in this documentary. And being the owner of several of them I'm very much aware of the breeds origin and their story. But what does that have to do with anything anyways? People are the one's that act like jerks over nationalities not dogs, like me dogs don't really care about that sort of thing and never make issues about it.
On the farm when I was a kid we had a German shepherd and a bluey, they worked together herding throwing commands to eachother running 200 odd sheep dual file across the road to the next paddock, in their 10 years working they never once tried to stand over eachother it's like they both knew they had equal load
Our family had an Australian Blue Heeler named "Blue". Her fur was black but looked a blue hue in the sunlight. One of the most loyal dogs a person can own. Although she only lived to 12 years of age on a diet of Canadian kibble, the oldest dog ever recorded was Bluey, an Australian cattle dog who lived in Rochester, Victoria, Australia. Bluey lived 29 years and 5 months. She had a very active life working with sheep and cattle, which may have contributed to her longevity.
The impetus for me to adopt a Heeler years later-Chewie (1999-2016 ❤️). Having now had a total of five Heelers to date, I've found that them to be generally wary, willful, obstinate, and argumentative, but nonetheless extremely intelligent, observant, proactive, endearing little clown-beasts-with no "social conscience" whatsoever! 😉 Almost everything you'd expect from a medium-sized dog bred to herd large, non-compliant, rough cattle for miles and miles in Australia's outback. I was 11 or 12 in 1982 and saw this in the theater with my family. Only years later would I realize dad took us to the wrong movie. Just like Raiders of the Lost Ark and the scenes leading up to rolling boulder in the first 10 minutes, it was immediately my favorite movie. As soon as Max was on the freeway after the Ferril Kid described the past, I was hooked.

My Pepper used to lunge at cars and street signs just like at 2:58 I didn't know that was a healer thing. Miss her, she was so loyal, loved kids and was all business when outside on the farm "working"
One 4th of July, my Blue started snapping at firecrackers thrown on the ground, they were actually blowing up as she bit at them, I had to put her in the house because she wouldn't stop! It amazes me to think that she showed no fear and no apparent discomfort from the firecrackers!
@@if6was929 they can be fearless, specially if they think someone in there pack is threatened. Pepper passed away 8 years ago. We adopted another healer mix soon after. Both hated snakes and if you approached the snake they rush in, grab and shake it to death. Im in Colorado, we have rattle snakes here however not on our property, we just have huge bull snakes. Our current mix attacked a porcupine because she thought my wife wa6to close, not good results I must say. Also attacked a skunk to protect us, once again not so favorable outcome.
It makes me so happy to know Dog had a deserved second chance at life. It brings happy tears to my eyes to know he lived out his life with purpose and happiness. Something we all want for ourselves
this was my dog. got ‘Rex’ at two years after being a tied up blue heeler. He was extremely toy and fetch oriented. Such a great dog. lived 15 1/2 yrs.
Each time I watch that scene with the can of dog food, two moments strike me: when Max throws the can it sounds completely empty, then the hungry Dog dives in and still leaves a handful for the pilot man to eat. I first watched this back in the 80s and always wanted to have this dog. Back then I had no idea about the breed, I thought it was just a mongrel. Some 30 years later I adopted a 6 years old blue heeler who lived with me until the end of his days.
I was a young fella when this was released, because of this film, my first dog ( mine not the family pet) was a blue healer, savage little shit, but loyal as. He'd sit between my feet, bit every single person that entered our back yard when I wasn't around, RIP "GUDGEON" (GUDGEON pin, holds ya piston to the conrod) he was my best mate.
We had a Blue Heeler just like Dog growing up. His name was Rex. Absolutely the best family dog we ever had. We have pleasant memories and still tell stories about him. He was tough and protective. And also, a tire-biter, which this video just showed me is a trait these dogs can have. Interesting! Rex once flattened a visitor's car tire, lol!
Really liked this vid and it was lovly to know that Dog had a well deserved and good life post Max esp as he was so close to the brink of getting nailed, that scene with the rabbit and Dog holding the cord his eyes were so expressive - one of my faves.
We have a cattle dog and we were so sad by indeed, the hardest scene to watch in the movie. So this was so fun to watch knowing Dog's great real life. Good Dog!

I very happy that "Dog " lived a long and happy life we had a Kelpie that hated going in any car and he wasn't a tyre chaser so that does happen even to pedagrees

My last dog 'Bluey' did indeed end up with three legs. So as I am watching this, and the front leg disappears, I couldn't believe it. I watched this primarily for the Blue Heeler content, followed closely by Mad Max. I live in Victoria and my neighbours just got a Blue Heeler pup. I'm so jealous, I miss my Bluey, and he was a classic looking dog, not like this show junk you see these days. You don't see many old school, proper blueys these days. I have just subscribed because, as an Australian, born in the seventies, Mad Max is in my blood. We were practically raised on the original, like Vegemite. I must have watched it over 100 times, and watched every possible reaction here.
I can't stress enough to you guy's in Australia the cultural impact that the Mad Max franchise had here in America, the term "Road Warrior" to this day is used to describe any kind of bad ass car or motorcycle that's rough in appearance but still runs like a raped ape. A while back I watched a documentary called Not Quite Hollywood about the movie industry in Australia, particularly what's called "The Australian New Wave era" of movie making and came to understand that Mad Max was a product of an entire movement of movie making in Australia that started in the early 70's, since then I've been looking up and finding places to stream those movies like Stork, Alvin Purple, The Cars That Ate Paris, Picnic at Hanging Rock and a favorite of mine Oz, A Rock and Roll Road Story. I love those movies, they're all great and watching them to me is like getting to relive the 70's because I lived in that time but I've never seen them before, so everytime I see one for the first time it's like being transported back through time to the 70's, and the fact that Bruce Spence who's one of my favorite Australian actors is in a good bit of them is an added bonus, tracking down and watching those movies is my latest thing in life. It's funny that as I sit here typing this a movie just a few years old is on that has Jacki Weaver in it, star of some of those movies like Stork, Alvin Purple and Picnic at Hanging Rock among others. Those movies from that era, that movement in Australian film making are so great and I'm so glad I've discovered them especially in this era of all the remanufactured rebooted junk that's coming out of Hollywood.

Some of the roads/areas where Mad Max was shot, been through there many times. The beach scene with the mannequin, I've fished off that beach. Bruce Spence, I was only thinking the other day how much of a legendary actor he is. The Cars That Ate Paris, what can I say? Some of the dark Aussie films are the best. Have you seen Stone? Have you seen Wake in Fright? That one is a life changer. I would also suggest the more obscure The Plumber. I believe Cable Guy paid homage to this, the line in it even 'it's not like I'm the plumber'! I think Weaver has been performing for 60 years. I could talk with you for hours.
@@arconeagain Yes, I've see Stone, as a matter of fact I just got around to watching it just about 2 weeks ago, Wake in Fright and The Plumber I've never heard of I don't think but I'm definitely putting them on my list as per your recommendation. I was 17 when The Road Warrior came out and I first saw it here in the US and like most people my age was instantly taken in by it, all of us were trying to figure out what kind of car it was he had and were trying to figure out how to get one, it being the pre internet days we'd never seen one and didn't understand that companies like Ford and GM had subsidiaries in Australia that designed and made cars unique to Australia, there'd been Ford Falcons here in America but they were different chassis and from what I gather after they were discontinued here in the states that freed up Ford of Australia to use that name for a model of theirs, it's also to my understanding the Australian Falcons were built on the basic Mustang chassis just with a different body style, either way after that movie came out we'd have loved to get them here in the states, that car became an instant icon. Another big Australian influence here in America from back in those days that made a huge cultural impact here in the states was AC/DC of course, we'd had some exposure to their music in the 70's but when Back in Black came out in 1980 it ripped through every high school in America like a wildfire and overnight made AC/DC a household name, I've never seen an album explode like that one did, it instantly became a "must have" for everyone in high school and became an instant classic.
@@dukecraig2402 brilliant. If you want to see more of the cars of the era in Australia, look up Bathurst 1000 or Hardie Ferodo 500. It's a prestigious motor racing event in Australia on one of the greatest tracks on earth. Ford coupes used to be common here, watch Love the Beast with Eric Bana to get an idea of car culture in Australia and Melbourne, they're called petrol heads. My brother had a Holden GTR XU1 in the eighties, a direct competitor to Ford. It's all about the Ford Holden rivalry. The government put a stop to such cars when Ford released the Australian GT, it was the fastest production sedan in the world at the time. Please make sure you watch Wake in Fright, no film has had an impact on me like that, ever. Another sort of car movie (dark) is Metal Skin of the 90s. It features Ben Mendelsohn. Another sort of car movie he did was The Big Steal, very funny. My boss saw AC/DC with Bon (I was born in '77). Yes it's amazing what Back in Black did in the states, you've gotta hand it to Brian, boy did he take the reigns. I have also watched countless reactions to AC/DC, again, in my blood. Great speaking with you, and it would be good if we could keep in touch. BTW other early Mel movies are Summer City, 'Tim' with Piper Laurie (she starred in The Hustler with Paul Newman) and Gallipoli, of course. Gallipoli is a masterpiece, as too Wake in Fright. @@arconeagain Oh yea, Gallipoli is an excellent movie and I've been a fan of it since I first saw it in 81, another good Mel movie from back then is The Year of Living Dangerously 1982 with Sigourney Weaver and especially Lina Hunt who won the Academy Award for her portrayal of a man, Billy Qwan in it. 1981 was a fantastic year for movies, Dragonslayer The Road Warrior Gallipoli Escape From New York Time Bandits Raiders of the Lost Ark And the list just goes on and on for that year, it could quite possibly be the greatest year ever in the history of movies, there's just too many to list from that year that are fantastic.
My own dog Hunter had a similar problem, he'd chase cars and bite the tires, this was because my grandfather's friend would pretend to try and run him over which led him to develop a hatred and fear of cars, he got hit a couple times, the first time he broke one of his back legs which developed into a limp on that leg when he got old, the second time it was more minor injuries, but thankfully he lived to see old age.
We have a heeler because of Dog, as well! Lol! She’s so freaking spoiled and a tire chaser, too. Car tires, truck tires, motorcycle tires, scooter tires, lawnmower tires, wheelbarrow tires and so on. She even tries to attack round garbage can lids!
Dog didn’t know his life had been saved, he never knew he was scheduled to die in the morning. Also great video and you madd maxx knowledge is incredible.
It's great to hear that so many people involved really cared about animal welfare. Not advertising to avoid dogs being maimed means a lot, far more than a throw away line about the dog's name being 'Trike'. Amazing the good and bad luck for that particular dog, given he was doomed, but also hated cars, yet ended up in a Mad Max film. Thanks for everything!
I had a blue heeler growing up who would bite the tires occasionally, but she always stuck by us. She was so loyal and protective of the family. But she loved car rides. Also she was deaf.
Fantastic video! Great pacing, excellent editing and the script is even great. You're a very good story teller. Most people make 10-15 min videos that could be told in 3-5 min and there's so much filler it's draining. Watching this video has renewed my faith that good UA-cam videos are still being made! What matters is that this one is factually correct, worst case scenario if it wasn't and got popular, people would become misinformed.
I saw MM2 in the theater when it came out with my mom because I was only 12. To this day she still talks about watching the movie through her fingers. It's one of my favorites still to this day.
Like so many others here, Dog was my inspiration for adopting a heeler. I've had my girl, Kimchi, for over five years now. She's my best friend and I dread the day I have to say goodbye. I tell her all the time that we're beating the world record for oldest dog (also a heeler). Glad Dog had such a good life on and off set. I always kind of hoped the Gyro pilot would have adopted him. You could tell they got along.

Being the car crazy kid I was, my best friend and I were nuts when we first saw Mad Max. Then the sequel was even more over the top. But I was even more dog crazy than anything else. I thought Dog was such a badass pup. Rough and tumble, damn near indestructible. Jump forward a few decades and I was presented the chance opportunity to take in a blue heeler as a re-home rescue. Damn straight I jumped at the chance. Five years later I’m a hard-core heeler guy. It has been a blast having her in my life. I love my little velociraptor so damn much. A total PITA at times but I wouldn’t trade her for the universe.

Dog's legacy lives on in the Fallout universe's "Dogmeat" (who in all except for Fallout 3 is immortal), Rex in Fallout New Vegas (who is a stand-in for Dogmeat) and "Dinky Di" from the Mad Max game. I forget the name of a steampunk rpg game I played once (it was about 5 computers ago), but it also features an overt nod to Dog. Also, it's good to know he had a good life after the movie.
I grew up in the central valley of rural California, USA. I had a Blue Healer when I was a kid that I named Dog! In this case, I named him after the Dog in a John Wayne movie, Big Jake. He was literally my play companion and we would explore everywhere and everything together. We spent every free moment together. He was smart, intuitive and a true friend. I miss him very much even 40+ years later.
Dog's final moments might have been faked but that's exactly what an Australian Cattle dog would do IRL. They are so loyal and fearless, they will put themselves in harm's way to protect their owner. My Blue, Snoop would protect my younger son when his older brother would play fight with him but I wouldn't want to see a stranger do something like that. Snoop saw me as her alpha and she'd do anything for me. When my older son died, she knew when I was upset, I'd never known an animal who was so intuitive. She was the best dog I ever had, a true friend, irreplaceable and I miss her dearly.
Great that you got to have the Bluey experience as a kid given you grew up in the US. A mate who is a copper here is Aus who told me how Blueys are so loyal that police and emergency Services sometimes have trouble getting to a driver who has been killed in a motor accident because a freaked out Bluey in the vehicle won't let anyone get near his boss. Blueys are pretty special dogs.
We all miss our dogs, but what happiness they bring to our lives. I'm 60 now and have a Staffordshire bull terrier, cross English mastiff....Gus, is the most gentle intelligent and loving dog I've ever had. He's 7 now and I've decided he will be my last (if I out live him?) As nothing could replace him.

@@michealgillman7418I know that feeling. I turned 45 the other day, have had dogs all my life, and never went longer than a year in between them. But my last died 3 years ago this August. She was just one of the special ones. All dogs have their words and commands they know and their own personalities but sometimes you get one that just stands a little above the others.
This one knew more words than any I ever had. I have no idea how I did it but I taught her to sneeze on command. I dunno maybe a million people have done that but it was just the damndest thing. And she knew when I was cutting her favorite "healthy snack," green peppers. I could lay out various vegetables in the kitchen and start chopping onions and zucchini and carrots and she didn't care (though she did love carrots). But as soon as I'd cut into a pepper she'd run in. And it wasn't a smell thing, I would trick her sometimes and cut very slowly and quietly and she wouldn't come (I always shared eventually of course). But when she heard the sound of a green pepper on the board it was on.
I could go on and on but point being, some are truly just irreplaceable.
Dog: "Was I a good boy?"
Death: "No. I heard you were the best."
Dog was the most underrated sidekick. I'm glad he was loved and adopted. Too many movie animals get mistreated, it warms me to know the crew really took the extra effort to treat him well.
I will write down the comment from the previous upload. I found Dog's story to be very interesting because I just thought it was as simple as finding a dog and training him for the film. Dog the Australian shepherd dog, the Wasteland Heeler who only had 1 day left to live became the co-star of Mad Max 2. A good boy with a big heart till the end, may he still roam the sandy beaches chasing scarves and rubber snakes.
that's a genuinely good ending for that dog, and it doesnt surprise me that the cast got so attached to him, one of my favorite behind the scenes stories about the first John Wick film is that after the camera was done rolling when they did the whole fake death scene of the dog, all the guys just ran to the dog and gave it a hug lol

Dog is one of my all time favorite movie dogs. It's nice to know he had a good, long life after his movie career ended.
We got a blue heeler (after 4 labs) because my husband wanted the Mad Max dog. Riley is a handful but smart as a whip, protective & loyal, with a strong stubborn streak. He’s affectionate & a cuddler, too. But this boy was born to run & is happiest let loose to explore the world around him. my hubs gives him rides on the snowmobile & he sits there like a real trooper ❤❤
Yeah, doesn’t it just make so much sense to get a heeler once you’ve had a bunch of Labs? I’m still very much a Lab guy and retrievers in general but since I adopted my little brat of a heeler I’m hooked. My girl is intense, stubborn and mega-intelligent but she’s also the best cuddler in my pack. She has slept next to my head literally every night for the past 5 1/2 years she has owned me. Not the breed for everyone but worth the adventure.

When I was a kid my dad brought home a blue heeler puppy, we named her nipper for her biting. When she was mostly grown, she was run over chasing the tires on his truck as he was driving in the yard and had to be put down. I think I only ever saw my dad cry three times, once for my Grandma's funeral, once for my cousins funeral, and when he was digging the hole out back for nipper.

I was particularly impressed by the factoid about the scene where the Gyro Captain, Max, and the dog return to the gyrocopter, and find the dead man. That most of dialogue and action by Bruce Spence and the dog was improvised.
Thanks so much for researching this. As an Aussie I grew up with the Mad Max movies and like many others, can't get enough trivia about these iconic films. Great that "Dog" was in reality a tyre chasing rascal recidivist Bluey on Death Row at the pound who got saved on the condition he submit to a vasectomy - and in spite of the fact his proven hatred of cars was undiminished - went on to became an ICON of Australian road movies....😂
I got the opportunity of being best friends with a Female Blue heeler named Bella. I can say hands down those 10 years were the best years of my life! She went everywhere I went including work everyday. I'm adopted so she was the closest thing I've ever had to a family..... it's been 2 years since she passed and my life has withered without her 😔

I lost my GSD when I was 13. I swore never to have another dog but when I saw mad max 2 in the 80s the dog impressed me so much it stayed in my memory didn’t know anything about the breed. Fast forward to 2010 or so my kids were pestering me for a dog so I agreed saying ok we will get one but it has to be an ACD. Thinking that I was being clever I’d never seen one in the UK now I have 2, one in on my shoulder as I type and the other is on my feet. Amazing dogs.
I had an Australian Shepard that very much fits the personality of the "dog" in this story, and like Dog he was a rescue but he was only about 4 months old when I got him, he was absolutely fearless he was adored by everyone everywhere we went and all the other dogs wanted to be like him, it was amazing the way he'd take over as the leader when you'd take him around an established pack of dogs, in 5 minutes he'd be the new alpha, he just had this energy and charm that was infectious that made him 100% rock star everywhere we went, and he was a little f%&ker, he was always into something or doing something that was borderline criminal, I used to say all the time "I swear that little f$#ker's one little mustache away from invading Poland".
The stories about him are endless and epic to put it mildly, like the time he battled it out with an Osprey in our back yard over a fish the bird had caught in the river that was just downstream from a creek in a gully behind out house, poor thing landed in our backyard just wanting to eat it's lunch after working so hard to get it but it ended up sitting on a limb that overhung our backyard screeching and watching Hunter run around tossing his fish up in the air taunting him with it, of course it wound up on my roof and I had to get a ladder out before it turned into a fishcicle because it was the middle of winter, or the time my girlfriend at the time was planting flowers at the same time he was running laps around the house and everytime he came galloping through the flower garden he'd snatch one she'd just planted and then turn around not understanding why she didn't seem to be making any progress, I was watching through a window laughing my ass off through the whole thing barely able to contain myself, after about the third one she turned and saw him running around the corner of the house with that flower hanging out of his mouth and started screaming, just like the Osprey did.
I've had some dogs in my life but there'll never be another one like him, he was one of those personalities you run across once in a lifetime if you're lucky and I'll always thank my lucky stars that I got to share his life with a part of mine, when him and I were living in that house I consider them to be the best years of my life, I love my dogs I have now but there'll never be another one like him.
Hunter passed away about a year before I moved out of that house and back to my home state of Pennsylvania, everyone said I should have had him cremated so I could keep him with me but I felt burying him up there in the yard at the edge of the gully behind the house was more appropriate, he loved that place and was always standing guard over it and me, and it was the best kind of place for him to live with it's huge yards he had to run around in and always "monitor", oh yea it was his place and he had no quams about letting anyone know it was, God rest his soul.

Who said Australian Shepard's were? I simply said I had an Australian Shepard that had a personality quite a bit like Dog's from the description of him in this documentary.
And being the owner of several of them I'm very much aware of the breeds origin and their story.
But what does that have to do with anything anyways? People are the one's that act like jerks over nationalities not dogs, like me dogs don't really care about that sort of thing and never make issues about it.
I grew up in Narooma and would see Dog around the place all the time. He loved going out to sea with Gerry on his jet ski. Amazing pup.
I’ve had both Blue Heelers and Red Heelers and I will say they are amazing wonderful animals and make great buddies!
On the farm when I was a kid we had a German shepherd and a bluey, they worked together herding throwing commands to eachother running 200 odd sheep dual file across the road to the next paddock, in their 10 years working they never once tried to stand over eachother it's like they both knew they had equal load
Our family had an Australian Blue Heeler named "Blue". Her fur was black but looked a blue hue in the sunlight. One of the most loyal dogs a person can own. Although she only lived to 12 years of age on a diet of Canadian kibble, the oldest dog ever recorded was Bluey, an Australian cattle dog who lived in Rochester, Victoria, Australia. Bluey lived 29 years and 5 months. She had a very active life working with sheep and cattle, which may have contributed to her longevity.
The impetus for me to adopt a Heeler years later-Chewie (1999-2016 ❤️).
Having now had a total of five Heelers to date, I've found that them to be generally wary, willful, obstinate, and argumentative, but nonetheless extremely intelligent, observant, proactive, endearing little clown-beasts-with no "social conscience" whatsoever! 😉
Almost everything you'd expect from a medium-sized dog bred to herd large, non-compliant, rough cattle for miles and miles in Australia's outback.

I was 11 or 12 in 1982 and saw this in the theater with my family. Only years later would I realize dad took us to the wrong movie. Just like Raiders of the Lost Ark and the scenes leading up to rolling boulder in the first 10 minutes, it was immediately my favorite movie. As soon as Max was on the freeway after the Ferril Kid described the past, I was hooked.
I have been waiting for this documentary on Dog since 1982, which was when I saw the movie.
I hardly ever use all caps but after watching this documentary on one of my favorite characters from the movie I have to say that, "YOU ARE AWESOME!!!" Thank you for this video!

My Pepper used to lunge at cars and street signs just like at 2:58 I didn't know that was a healer thing. Miss her, she was so loyal, loved kids and was all business when outside on the farm "working"
One 4th of July, my Blue started snapping at firecrackers thrown on the ground, they were actually blowing up as she bit at them, I had to put her in the house because she wouldn't stop! It amazes me to think that she showed no fear and no apparent discomfort from the firecrackers!
@@if6was929 they can be fearless, specially if they think someone in there pack is threatened. Pepper passed away 8 years ago. We adopted another healer mix soon after. Both hated snakes and if you approached the snake they rush in, grab and shake it to death. Im in Colorado, we have rattle snakes here however not on our property, we just have huge bull snakes. Our current mix attacked a porcupine because she thought my wife wa6to close, not good results I must say. Also attacked a skunk to protect us, once again not so favorable outcome.

this was my dog. got ‘Rex’ at two years after being a tied up blue heeler. He was extremely toy and fetch oriented. Such a great dog. lived 15 1/2 yrs.
Each time I watch that scene with the can of dog food, two moments strike me: when Max throws the can it sounds completely empty, then the hungry Dog dives in and still leaves a handful for the pilot man to eat.
I first watched this back in the 80s and always wanted to have this dog. Back then I had no idea about the breed, I thought it was just a mongrel. Some 30 years later I adopted a 6 years old blue heeler who lived with me until the end of his days.
I was a young fella when this was released, because of this film, my first dog ( mine not the family pet) was a blue healer, savage little shit, but loyal as. He'd sit between my feet, bit every single person that entered our back yard when I wasn't around, RIP "GUDGEON" (GUDGEON pin, holds ya piston to the conrod) he was my best mate.
The scene where the gyro captain is at gunpoint is one of my favorites. Dog is awesome, so glad he was well taken care of.

We had a Blue Heeler just like Dog growing up. His name was Rex. Absolutely the best family dog we ever had. We have pleasant memories and still tell stories about him. He was tough and protective. And also, a tire-biter, which this video just showed me is a trait these dogs can have. Interesting! Rex once flattened a visitor's car tire, lol!

Really liked this vid and it was lovly to know that Dog had a well deserved and good life post Max esp as he was so close to the brink of getting nailed, that scene with the rabbit and Dog holding the cord his eyes were so expressive - one of my faves.
We have a cattle dog and we were so sad by indeed, the hardest scene to watch in the movie. So this was so fun to watch knowing Dog's great real life. Good Dog!

My last dog 'Bluey' did indeed end up with three legs. So as I am watching this, and the front leg disappears, I couldn't believe it. I watched this primarily for the Blue Heeler content, followed closely by Mad Max. I live in Victoria and my neighbours just got a Blue Heeler pup. I'm so jealous, I miss my Bluey, and he was a classic looking dog, not like this show junk you see these days. You don't see many old school, proper blueys these days. I have just subscribed because, as an Australian, born in the seventies, Mad Max is in my blood. We were practically raised on the original, like Vegemite. I must have watched it over 100 times, and watched every possible reaction here.
I can't stress enough to you guy's in Australia the cultural impact that the Mad Max franchise had here in America, the term "Road Warrior" to this day is used to describe any kind of bad ass car or motorcycle that's rough in appearance but still runs like a raped ape.
A while back I watched a documentary called Not Quite Hollywood about the movie industry in Australia, particularly what's called "The Australian New Wave era" of movie making and came to understand that Mad Max was a product of an entire movement of movie making in Australia that started in the early 70's, since then I've been looking up and finding places to stream those movies like Stork, Alvin Purple, The Cars That Ate Paris, Picnic at Hanging Rock and a favorite of mine Oz, A Rock and Roll Road Story.
I love those movies, they're all great and watching them to me is like getting to relive the 70's because I lived in that time but I've never seen them before, so everytime I see one for the first time it's like being transported back through time to the 70's, and the fact that Bruce Spence who's one of my favorite Australian actors is in a good bit of them is an added bonus, tracking down and watching those movies is my latest thing in life.
It's funny that as I sit here typing this a movie just a few years old is on that has Jacki Weaver in it, star of some of those movies like Stork, Alvin Purple and Picnic at Hanging Rock among others.
Those movies from that era, that movement in Australian film making are so great and I'm so glad I've discovered them especially in this era of all the remanufactured rebooted junk that's coming out of Hollywood.

Some of the roads/areas where Mad Max was shot, been through there many times. The beach scene with the mannequin, I've fished off that beach. Bruce Spence, I was only thinking the other day how much of a legendary actor he is. The Cars That Ate Paris, what can I say? Some of the dark Aussie films are the best. Have you seen Stone? Have you seen Wake in Fright? That one is a life changer. I would also suggest the more obscure The Plumber. I believe Cable Guy paid homage to this, the line in it even 'it's not like I'm the plumber'! I think Weaver has been performing for 60 years. I could talk with you for hours.

Yes, I've see Stone, as a matter of fact I just got around to watching it just about 2 weeks ago, Wake in Fright and The Plumber I've never heard of I don't think but I'm definitely putting them on my list as per your recommendation.
I was 17 when The Road Warrior came out and I first saw it here in the US and like most people my age was instantly taken in by it, all of us were trying to figure out what kind of car it was he had and were trying to figure out how to get one, it being the pre internet days we'd never seen one and didn't understand that companies like Ford and GM had subsidiaries in Australia that designed and made cars unique to Australia, there'd been Ford Falcons here in America but they were different chassis and from what I gather after they were discontinued here in the states that freed up Ford of Australia to use that name for a model of theirs, it's also to my understanding the Australian Falcons were built on the basic Mustang chassis just with a different body style, either way after that movie came out we'd have loved to get them here in the states, that car became an instant icon.
Another big Australian influence here in America from back in those days that made a huge cultural impact here in the states was AC/DC of course, we'd had some exposure to their music in the 70's but when Back in Black came out in 1980 it ripped through every high school in America like a wildfire and overnight made AC/DC a household name, I've never seen an album explode like that one did, it instantly became a "must have" for everyone in high school and became an instant classic.
@@dukecraig2402 brilliant. If you want to see more of the cars of the era in Australia, look up Bathurst 1000 or Hardie Ferodo 500. It's a prestigious motor racing event in Australia on one of the greatest tracks on earth. Ford coupes used to be common here, watch Love the Beast with Eric Bana to get an idea of car culture in Australia and Melbourne, they're called petrol heads. My brother had a Holden GTR XU1 in the eighties, a direct competitor to Ford. It's all about the Ford Holden rivalry. The government put a stop to such cars when Ford released the Australian GT, it was the fastest production sedan in the world at the time. Please make sure you watch Wake in Fright, no film has had an impact on me like that, ever. Another sort of car movie (dark) is Metal Skin of the 90s. It features Ben Mendelsohn. Another sort of car movie he did was The Big Steal, very funny. My boss saw AC/DC with Bon (I was born in '77). Yes it's amazing what Back in Black did in the states, you've gotta hand it to Brian, boy did he take the reigns. I have also watched countless reactions to AC/DC, again, in my blood. Great speaking with you, and it would be good if we could keep in touch. BTW other early Mel movies are Summer City, 'Tim' with Piper Laurie (she starred in The Hustler with Paul Newman) and Gallipoli, of course. Gallipoli is a masterpiece, as too Wake in Fright. Oh yea, Gallipoli is an excellent movie and I've been a fan of it since I first saw it in 81, another good Mel movie from back then is The Year of Living Dangerously 1982 with Sigourney Weaver and especially Lina Hunt who won the Academy Award for her portrayal of a man, Billy Qwan in it.

My own dog Hunter had a similar problem, he'd chase cars and bite the tires, this was because my grandfather's friend would pretend to try and run him over which led him to develop a hatred and fear of cars, he got hit a couple times, the first time he broke one of his back legs which developed into a limp on that leg when he got old, the second time it was more minor injuries, but thankfully he lived to see old age.

We have a heeler because of Dog, as well! Lol! She’s so freaking spoiled and a tire chaser, too. Car tires, truck tires, motorcycle tires, scooter tires, lawnmower tires, wheelbarrow tires and so on. She even tries to attack round garbage can lids!
Dog didn’t know his life had been saved, he never knew he was scheduled to die in the morning. Also great video and you madd maxx knowledge is incredible.

It's great to hear that so many people involved really cared about animal welfare. Not advertising to avoid dogs being maimed means a lot, far more than a throw away line about the dog's name being 'Trike'. Amazing the good and bad luck for that particular dog, given he was doomed, but also hated cars, yet ended up in a Mad Max film. Thanks for everything!
I had a blue heeler growing up who would bite the tires occasionally, but she always stuck by us. She was so loyal and protective of the family. But she loved car rides. Also she was deaf.

Fantastic video! Great pacing, excellent editing and the script is even great. You're a very good story teller. I saw MM2 in the theater when it came out with my mom because I was only 12. To this day she still talks about watching the movie through her fingers. It's one of my favorites still to this day.
Like so many others here, Dog was my inspiration for adopting a heeler. I've had my girl, Kimchi, for over five years now. She's my best friend and I dread the day I have to say goodbye. I tell her all the time that we're beating the world record for oldest dog (also a heeler).
Glad Dog had such a good life on and off set. I always kind of hoped the Gyro pilot would have adopted him. You could tell they got along.

Somehow a part of me just got healed knowing that Dog lived a long and happy life! That scene always bothered me. Thank you! (Not a coincidence, that every dog I've had since this amazing film came out was at least part Blue Heeler!)

Being the car crazy kid I was, my best friend and I were nuts when we first saw Mad Max. Then the sequel was even more over the top. But I was even more dog crazy than anything else. I thought Dog was such a badass pup. Rough and tumble, damn near indestructible. Jump forward a few decades and I was presented the chance opportunity to take in a blue heeler as a re-home rescue. Damn straight I jumped at the chance. Five years later I’m a hard-core heeler guy. It has been a blast having her in my life. I love my little velociraptor so damn much. A total PITA at times but I wouldn’t trade her for the universe.
