Hey, so proud to now be a part of this car's history! I was the one who designed the version in Ready Player One! Alterations included the tanks being hidden jet engines, reinforced supercharger and front bumper, and several other changes to fit into this new virtual world. It was originally planned as Aech's car for the film which would have featured it MUCH more, but was later changed to the Big Foot monster truck because it was easier to spot in the sea of cars. There was also a more customized version that was scaled bigger, had a more dragster rear end and a sunroof cut out of the roff so the 8' AECH character could drive with his head out the top. But that too was paired back before filming. Still LOVE the original Mad Max as the one with the best story as Max walks into the darkness and comes out as the Black on Black.... epic!

Absolutely fantastic video. I was one of those petrol heads that saw the original in the theater in the US as a 16YO octane junkie. This car grabbed in a way nothing else ever has. Trying to get info on the car before the internet in the US was extremely hard. About all I was able to find out was it was a Australian Falcon. Now seeing as the Mad Max released in the States was devoid of any Aussie accents or lingo we had thought the car was a Ford Torino with a 71-73 Mustang front clip and much custom work to achieve the look . Some has even thought it was a George Barris car. For me this was summer of 1980 as the US saw the release about a year after it open in Oz. So when video tape releases came out I bought it and studied the car frame by frame , dreaming of the day I would somehow find and buy one . Flash forward 20 years to 2000 . A friend at work , also a Mad Max fanatic were talking . I told him of what little I still knew of the car and it spurred him into a web search for info as I was still not in the computer age. The next day he came in with pages he had printed from Peter Barton's Mad max FAQ page. Seeing all the info available I went out and purchased a Web TV internet terminal and began to scrounge everything I could. After reading everything on Peter's page I went through all the links he has posted. One link was that of Mad Max Cars. Thinking it was a info page I was stunned when the page opened with the message " Do You live in the US? Do you want to own a Interceptor?" I was like HELL YES I DO. I read everything on the page and reached out to the owner of the page . I explained what I was looking for in a car and he said well I have a Black 4 speed car ,but it's a XA GT clone, you'd have to replace all the front sheet metal. I was still interested . Now at this point I had very little idea of what a stock XA GT looked like . When Terry transmitted the photos . My plans changed. I no longer wanted to build the Interceptor , but wanted to restore the car back to it's original beauty. So we struck the deal in June of 2000, the car was packed and shipped too me and arrived in late August of 2000. I goy=t the car registered and insured and drove it as is to it's 1st show 3 days later. The crowd that this beaten and slightly tired car drew was surprising to me. I was still parking it as a crowd gathered around it . many wanting to know why was this very American looking car ( most if not all believing it was a Torino) had RHD . Once I explained that this was the stock version of the Mad Max Car they all understood . After that began a nearly 2 year nut and bolt restoration and the car was truly now show worthy in late may of 2002. In 2003 I along with the many Falcon owners in the States pilgrimaged to Dearborn, Michigan in June 2003 for the Ford 100th celebration. We had 26 Aussie falcons there over the course of the weekend . Still to my knowledge the largest gathering of Aussie falcons outside of Oz or NZ . In attendance we had 3 Interceptors and a Big Bopper sedan, XA ,XB coupes and a Cobra , a XW sedan and Ford of Australia sent over a new at the BA XR6 sedan and Ute. So this one car has taken up 40 years of my life and I've never been disappointed in it. Again thanks for the great video and your work is greatly appreciated.

Well done ! The best doco I've seen so far. I used to own a 75 XB GS Coupe with factory sunroof. I sold it for $2,500 to a friend. How stupid I was ...
Cheers. Several people have pointed out I said "Valve" when I should have said "Venturis" wish I could go back and fix that. But thank you for the kind words. I always wanted and XB coupe as a kid growing up in Australia. When I finally made it to 16 in the mid to late 90s, they were still obtainable. But my father took us away to another country just before I got my licence and could save up to buy one. I went back in 2006, but by then I was at zero and not had a place of my own to properly store one. Now I am away and the dream is over. Unless I get rich somehow. But they just keep going up, so I feel your pain in letting it go so cheap.
Freaken excellent video, I was only 11 years old when my parents took us to a Drive-In to see the first Mad Max, I was blown away and instantly hooked on the MFP Interceptor, "Long Live the Night Rider" :)
Well i must say, i'm extremely impressed with this doco on the old Mad Max GT351 XB Falcon, you tell a clear description and good understanding of it's life. Thank you Michael.
Cheers mate. This is the doc that got the ball rolling for me on this channel. I always wanted to see this car's story told as best as possible as I loved it as a kid growing up in Australia. Turns out there is more history out there than people knew and of other cars as well.
One of the greatest cinematic moments in my 49 years on this planet is, "Kick it in the guts Barry". My God if that isn't magnificent the growl and the whine of the supercharger, ending with the last of oxygen being sucked as it shut down. Pure animal.
Saw it when it came out, Still gets the hairs on my arms up. My first car was a 74 coupe because of that movie. Wish I still had it. What an idiot I am : (
I still remember the first time and exact moment and emotion felt when I saw MadMax in the early '80s. That car made a huge impact on me. Years later I found out the name of the movie and discovered The Road Warrior in the late '80s. The Road Warrior is the very first VHS tape I ever purchased and I wore the God damned tape out I watched it so many times and had to purchase another copy. MadMax has it's own special mystique and remains my favorite motion picture of all time.
I did the same. My brother, one of our mates and myself would be forever watching it, so much so my mother knew the lines of the movie and didn't watch it at all.
I used to clean the interior of my cousin's XB GT when I was a kid of 11. A Ford Pepper red one with the black bonnet infill. On the weekends, I was occasionally lucky enough to go racing with him. He would change the car to a race prepared engine on Friday, load up the trailer on Saturday with track tyres and and we'd drive to the track. At the track, he would sticker the car, change tyres, attend scrutineering, compete, change back to road tyres, drive home and change the engine back on Sunday. All the while with me just wide eyed, grinning and soaking it in for the whole day. This does sounds like a tall story, but if you followed super car racing in the 70's and 80's in New Zealand, you'll know the driver I'm referring to... An amazing video, thank you so much. This bought back some wonderful memories for me.
Great informative video. I saw the car during many visits to the "Cars of the stars" Museum in England where it was on display. Usually you had to see it standing behind a barrier but one day the museum was almost empty and the staff let me sit in the drivers seat. Very nice.
And they rust, I had one. The steel was shit and they had no zinc coating. Also the factory caulking put on the bare metal in the factory used to let go and trap water under it. When I bought mine , panel beater mate wised me up and we stripped the car and resealed it.
yeah but the americans had the 1967 falcon coupe ( very cool cars BTW) where australia didn't produce those, only the 4 door version with both 6 cylinder and V8 versions
7:41 I saw Mad Max at the long gone Rowville drive-in in Melbourne on release. I had a very quick XA four door at the time, and Mel was very nearly correct.
I lost this video in my history after a barrage of children's videos buried it (nephew stayed for a week, forgot to change the account on the tv) and today it reappeared in my recommended. Could not be happier to have taken the extra 21 minutes to stay awake and finally watch it, excellently done video that I Will be sharing with friends, now I've got to plan a trip to Orlando for next year.
Fantastic job on this. As a Yank that has owned and built TWO Interceptor replica, one MM1 and one Fury Road (now redone to road Warrior), I know a little bit about the car and movies as well as the group of Aussie Falcon owners. You could have reached out to Cameron Manwell as he is who built the five Falcons for Fury Road(three blacks and two Razors). Cheers and great job!
I went to see Mad Max in 1979 in the only theater showing it in Nashville. My dad, my brother and I couldn’t decide what kind of car the Pursuit special was. Even when I saw the Road Warrior years later I was still stumped. It was years later that I finally found out it was an Aussie Original
In the roar of an engine he lost everything - and became - a shell of a man, a burnt out desolate man, a man haunted by the demons of his past, a man who wondered out into the wasteland. And it was here, in this blighted place, that he learned to live again.

I've watched this movie probably 100 times just for the car chases, back then you had to rent it from the local store, i believe this one VHS was my all time go to )
I notice the type of side-pipes change from one version to another. In the opening of Road Warrior they are clearly thin and straight but on the XB used for speed runs they are wide and fluted. Most of the restorations I’ve seen also appear to have fluted pipes.
Well done sir. Though I was only vaguely famiiar with The Interceptor (I'm in the U.S.) my love of U.S. muscle cars naturally drew me to the Falcon (I surmised The Interceptor to look very much like the U.S. Ford Torino). I learned a lot about the history of this legendary cinema star. Thanks for your efforts and upload regarding this video. I would guess that The Interceptor is the Australian equal of the "Bullitt Mustang) here in the states regarding it's fame and affection for the car by mover-goers. Cheers!

I might one day do a collective Mad Max video focusing on the other cars used in the film as well. But thank you once again for your kind words. Cheers.
Steve the car was not acquired by the Movie people from Rural Motors in Orange NSW, it was Sold brand new from Rural Motors in NSW and later it ended up in Victoria in 1975 at Frank Johnson Auto Mart car yard and they sold it to Bob Jane Southern Motors car yard in North Melbourne and Bob Jane car yard put the first Vic rego number plate on it (IFE509)

A massive amount of work went into this...a labour of love
Thank you. Yes it was. And it has started me onto doing similar videos for other movie vehicles. Keep an eye out. ;)
You can shut the gate on this one, its the ducks guts!!!!!
Yep, 'last of the V8 Interceptors. ... It would be a shame to blow it up.'
She sucks nitro
"It's the rat's ass"! I love this car since seeing Mad Max 2 in 1982 or 1983 in a theater in the Washington DC area in the USA. Peace!
AND the mutts nuts!!😉
deer's ears?
Fury road has the most amazing cars I have ever seen in any piece of media in my life, I really enjoyed looking back to where it all started in this video.
The car that started my career!
Saw it as a kid, was hooked immediately! First was models, then cars, 30yrs later I still find myself turning wrenches and giving people the car of their dreams.
Who'd of thunk!?
The interceptor lives on........
Cheers. Stay tuned, a new video showcasing the evolution of the interceptor will be released in the next few days.
What’s a blower ???
@@kevindimauro9689 slang for a super charger. Usually refers to a "Roots blower" , simply a bye gone super charger manufacturer from back in the 50's/60's.
Don't worry, you aren't the only one. :-(
gees, hope i dont have your car now, bought one in geelong, red, half vinyl roof, black stripes
@@MFPMapFilmProductions 1970-71 Torino's are still around and their a lot cheaper than a Falcon any way. Never give up on your dreams.
I had a 74, i know ur grief. All these yrs later I sometimes dream I am driving it.
Love how the old ad had them flogging the falcon through the bush.
One of the greatest cinematic moments in my 49 years on this planet is, "Kick it in the guts Barry". My God if that isn't magnificent the growl and the whine of the supercharger, ending with the last of oxygen being sucked as it shut down. Pure animal.
I replayed the start of this about 20 times in a row. 😂
Saw it when it came out, Still gets the hairs on my arms up. My first car was a 74 coupe because of that movie. Wish I still had it. What an idiot I am : (
nice work. awesome vintage tv intro / effects.
As far I tell superchargers are on as soon as the car stsrts no clutch to engage
Easily one of my favorite apocalypse movie
Well done. The interceptor is my favorite movie car ever
My 1st love when it came to cars! If I had FU money I would do whatever to get one!
Very nice.
Yeah, us too on our honeymoon! It's in America now...
Those Aussie two door Falcons even looked beautiful when they were rusted wrecks .
And they rust, I had one. The steel was shit and they had no zinc coating. Also the factory caulking put on the bare metal in the factory used to let go and trap water under it. When I bought mine , panel beater mate wised me up and we stripped the car and resealed it.
Fat arsed ugly things!!! 4 doors are a different story! XAs by preference.
yeah but the americans had the 1967 falcon coupe ( very cool cars BTW) where australia didn't produce those, only the 4 door version with both 6 cylinder and V8 versions
Love the beast is a great documentary with eric bana and his ford xb. Great watch. Cheers.

Wow, at 2:58 that's one hell of a shot of the cars. That's a movie poster right there.
nice work. awesome vintage tv intro / effects.
Thank you. That is a recreation of my old living room back home as I remembered it as a kid. Hence, the low angle.
In the roar of an engine he lost everything - and became - a shell of a man,
a burnt out desolate man,
a man haunted by the demons of his past, a man who wondered out into the wasteland.
And it was here, in this blighted place,
that he learned to live again.
Best documentary I watched in a long time ...that car when I saw it in the movies was straight out legendary...I shed tears when the car got blown up in Road Warrior.. thanks for bringing fond memories back in this video..❤
Cheers.
Seen the original in its original release in 1979 , my brother and I went .... To this day its still one of my favorite films.🙂🙂
Awesome Job on your coverage of the car and film.... 👍👍

Thank you.
As a australian and as a fan of mad max movies,i proudly say i have completed the mad max game many times and still play it even this week, and continue to watch and own all the mad max movies as well
Absolutely brilliant in every way well done
This videos are a labour of love. Everything is, simply, perfect, and the documents, the names, the data is so interesting for any Mad Max movies fan. Thanks so much
Cheers. Much appreciated.
It's also available as a slot car from Scalextric.
In two versions from the first and second movies
Interesting to hear. I'm currently scratch building one for my old Tyco slot car tracks. I'm using a Mustang funny car as the base and taking the nose and hood from a Firebird Trans Am. Still hunting for a decent supercharger.
@@qontoh2s872 Shouldn't be too hard to manufacture from styrene or clay.
@@ZiddersRooFurry I actually found the supercharger for it about a week ago. From an old Hot Wheels car. I considered carving one but this is much easier and has more detail than I could add. I may hollow it out to reduce the weight.
@@qontoh2s872 Sweet!
Just listened to a livestream discussion of the film and I had to come back and watch this again!
Love the roaring sound of the v8! Great documentary. Thx!
Thanks man. Check on my channel for others. I have three now with more to continue, plus other videos will be made, some breaking down car chase scenes and ranking different top 10's.
@@MFPMapFilmProductions awesome! Thanks
I've been a fan of MM and this car for nearly 40 years. This is by far the best documentary I've seen.
Thanks very much👍
Thank you very much. Its comments like yours that makes the whole thing worthwhile.
Thank you for putting such a great detailed history of such an iconic car. Great work.
Glad you liked it. There are a few more of other cars on my channel and more to come. Feel free to subscribe.
This amazing car started my love for everything automotive. There's no other car in the history of film has done more to excite the passion for truly awesome cars. I still remember coming out of the movie theater with so much excitement and I remember finding a magazine about this car at my local bookstore and hanging the pictures of this car all around my bedroom. I was so obsessed about this truly amazing car and it's still the car of my dream's till this very day...💯
Very well done! Thanks for making this vid
Thank you very much. Keep an eye out as this was the first of a series of episodes I am doing on famous movie and tv cars called Screen Chassis. I am now deciding which car to do next. I will be making videos on The Delorean from Back to the Future, The Tumbler from Batman Begins, The Turbo Interceptor from The Wraith, The Mustang from Bullitt and many others eventually. I am a one man operation at this stage so they will come when I can make them as good a quality as this one. Cheers.
Very very good, serious
Mad Max is the best trilogy ever mad . I watch it over and over , it's perfect 👍
Mate amazing documentary, you should be proud 🙌🏼🙌🏼👏🏼, All the best from Adelaide SA !
I gotta rewatch the movie again now. I loved it then so much
Well done. Love this video. I've learnt a few things I'd not known about the movie.
Myvfav all time car...Me and my wife were friends with the owners of the Cars of the stars museum in Keswick UK were the interceptor was i sat in that car more times than my dads car...and even got to start it when they were servicing all the cars... it was so loud and had to switch the blower on...a dream come true for me... great vid of the original and best Mad Max car.
That's awesome. Just once before I die, I would like to get a chance to sit in her and feel that energy she left in history.
@@MFPMapFilmProductions it was a dream come true for me the 1st time i was allowed to sit in her. It was so surreal i remembered watching Mad max for the 1st time on pirate vhs back in the day wishing for that car....then fast forward 20 years and here i am friends with the owners and getting to sit and start the very car i watched when i was 8 years old amazing
@@ForgottenHorrorchannel Got a chance to ask Craig Lowndes if he got a chance to drive one and surprised the answer no!!🤯 My first go kart used I had his 888 for my number!!
Great video with excellent information, loved the old tv with vhs tapes in a typical aussie lounge room environment, with Mad Max snippets on screen, well done!!
Cheers. That was a recreation I did of my old living room from the 80s. I use to lie on the carpet and watch films that way. Hence the angle I shot it in.
I owned a SS Camaro in 79' that had a blown Ls-6 427 cubic inch. First for all of you young people and i was 18 in 79', if you ever have a chance to ride in a blown muscle car, DO IT. I was running a 10% under driven, 3- Inch cragar drive and a 6.71 GM blower with Weiand full race manifold , topped off by 2 Holley 600cfm center squirters. What a great memories for the kid i used to be. A blown muscle car is a something to remember when that blower comes up on line, Over Pressure.
Wow... I;ve been looking for/thinking about this video for nearly 15 years...
I was just saying how Fuel TV/Motortrend Etc.. could make an entire show based on vehicles of Mad Max that would dominate the entire market
What a fantastic film and history lesson! Love it.
Well done video, very informative; loved seeing the car at the Kendal motor museum when younger . Still got the VHS video of the film that was dubbed, wasn't till i watched it again when i was about 15 on the BBC that I realised it was an Australian film!!
@ 3:51 Concorde panel van concept unveiled at the ’77 Melbourne Motor Show. Penned by visionary designer Peter Arcadipane and built by motor body craftsman Sam Midgley, the Concorde went on to be sold in kit form and became the styling inspiration for a certain famous black Interceptor hardtop.
WHEN DO WE GO FOR A RIDE!
Yesss 🏁🏁🏁🏁❤️❤️❤️❤️
The one thing that really shocked me was I asked a V8 Suprecar if he ever got to drive one and sadly the answer was no. That car was love at first sight as a kid !
All I can say is you get it, one of the best run downs of the mad max mobile I’ve ever seen and the rest of your car videos are brilliant. Excellent work
Thank you. More to come.
Thanks mate. Gold show :)
I love to hear all the details of this cars history. Since I saw Mad Max 1978 in the cinema as a 14 year old I watch it once a year and have had many Kawasaki Z bikes and still have one in 2022.
God i love Australia's contributions to automobile design and performance.
Great documentary of an iconic car. Thankyou.
I am glad you liked it. There are several other videos like this one on different movie cars on my channels. So far I have made doc on the 89 Batmobile and the 1986 Wraith car. I have also done a breakdown video on the opening chase from Mad Max one where I talk about those cars as well. I will soon be finishing another breakdown video on the chase from Bullitt. And my next movie car video will either be the Tumbler (I have already built a 3D model for that) or the Back to the Future Delorean or Ecto-1 from Ghostbusters. Stay tuned if you haven't subscribed. Cheers.
Gave it a like just for the intro
One of the best cinematic masterpieces made, an d on a low budget, shows that imagination and creativity , beats cash, in some instances.
this or a ferrari, i'll have this please :)
I've watched this movie probably 100 times just for the car chases, back then you had to rent it from the local store, i believe this one VHS was my all time go to )
Great video!!
Oustanding video, by far the best yet, thank you.
That was a beautiful car.
Excellent piece on the Interceptor what an awesome car!!! It is the star of the first Mad Max as much as Mel Gibson is.
I notice the type of side-pipes change from one version to another. In the opening of Road Warrior they are clearly thin and straight but on the XB used for speed runs they are wide and fluted. Most of the restorations I’ve seen also appear to have fluted pipes.
Interesting - thanks!
Cheers!
What a well researched video. I put it in my favorites to watch years ago. It was a fantastic wait for such an experience. 🎉
Cheers. Glad you got around to it and enjoyed it.
Brilliant 😎😎😎👍👍👍
Thanks. Stay tuned, I am making this into a type of series talking about other movie cars this way. Next up is The Wraith.
thank you. great documentary!! I m gonna watch for the 30ths time mad max today again.
I love the stills of the XB GT Coupe in white, when they acquired it from the Ford dealer in Orange,NSW.Bloody awesome pieces of content for your video.Loved it.
I am glad you loved this video. Though I have been busy on some big projects outside my own, I hope to continue these types of video on other movie cars that have left their mark on film and television. I have been collecting info on this car for years now as I have been a big fan of the franchise since I saw it as a kid back in 1985. I might one day do a collective Mad Max video focusing on the other cars used in the film as well. But thank you once again for your kind words. Cheers.
the car looks better pre front end mods
Steve the car was not acquired by the Movie people from Rural Motors in Orange NSW, it was Sold brand new from Rural Motors in NSW and later it ended up in Victoria in 1975 at Frank Johnson Auto Mart car yard and they sold it to Bob Jane Southern Motors car yard in North Melbourne and Bob Jane car yard put the first Vic rego number plate on it (IFE509)
Thanks for the memories. Saw Mad Max the first time in high school at the drive-in theater. Girlfriend at the time got pissed that I wanted to watch the movie instead of making out. LOL
You could watch the movie and let her give you a head job.
There was only one" Mad Max" film. The first one.
i disagree! there was another Mad Max movie - the first one!
Best breakdown of this famous car yet!
Thank you.

The sound of that Interceptor V8 is so Beautiful
Ber sure to include some of this stuff in the commentary, once you do this with Ollie.
You know it. Will do. Plus I have a few film info outside of the car to add as well.
R.i.p cars of the stars. Awesome collection and walking distance from where i lived in Keswick. When mates would visit i’d blow their minds taking them to it without warning. Security was pretty slack i’ve sat in the interceptor, a-team gmc, kit , original bat mobile, munsters stagecoach . Keswick was a really random setting for a car museum
I had a Mustang from that era. Falcon was waaay better choice! Lol! I wish I had a Falcon in America!
How can it be way better than a Mustang? It's basically the same car.
Great video, this bloke knows his stuff. Must of lived and breathed it since he was a kid!
Thank you. Yes I did. As much as I could at least. I will try and keep up this quality (or do better) in future videos. Cheers.
Good little doco' there mate. Mad Max ends with Thunderdome for me still though. Not a Fury Road fan at all.
Cheers. I'm inclined to agree with you. Fury Road is a great film. But for me, Mel is the true Mad Max and Thunderdome is where it ends for me, unless they can get Mel back (highly doubtful) But I watch FR as its own thing in this universe.
@@MFPMapFilmProductions aside from our movie preferences, this was an enjoyable, concise video on the car. About ten years ago, I found a site dedicated to every detail about the 'trilogy', and their was a great page all about the vehicles, like the '72 HOLDEN MONARO stolen by the Nightrider.
@@Hambag2009 If you haven't seen it yet, I have a more recent video on my channel about the making of the opening chase and the a "Lite doc" about those cars as well, as that is a Chase Breakdown series I have started. My docs are split up. One series on a special car that was used and has a good history. And the other series about car chases that the cars may not always be as special, but the scene was.
I found Fury Road to be overrated, I didn't like Thunderdome very much but it still has some charm.
Great car and video. Glad to see the Black on Black saved.
As the Ford Falcon was beautiful in the film I'm also fan of the Z1s ill like to no Whot happened to all the bikes. I don't now for shore but I think Kawasaki gave them all the bikes for nothing.
No, most of the bikes belonged to the guys who were riding them (many were actual bikies). This movie was made on a shoe string with bugger all help from any outfits.
Very well done, thanks for posting👍👍👍👍
Glad you liked it.
Good vid but for me the first 2 mad max films are legendary & then went down hill from there with the last one fury road, boring no real story line or plot & to the point of being unwatchable.
