    I can watch action movies and murder-films without any emotions, but to see those huge colossal freight-trains slowly go over a bridge or through a tunnel, then my hands start trembling and I hold my breath.

    Going eastbound the grade is 1.5% uphill, which really slows the train down. I rode a boxcar to Wenatchee in the 80's and the dang thing took nearly 35 minutes to get through the tunnel. With 4 diesel locomotives ahead of our car was chock full of black sooty smoke, not to mention carbon monoxide. No one warned me about that. I crawled head first into my sleeping bag to filter the smoke. That was probably a close call. The train goes twice as fast eastbound and the engines use a lot less throttle.

    that's pretty cool that the tunnel opens and closes.

    Very nice catches!! That's a amazing tunnel which is 7.8 miles long, I would want to visit that place sometimes.

      Thanks! You definitely should. It's weird because this was a place that I had watched videos of all the time, but I never thought I would get to visit in person. Very cool. More railfanning soon!

      +Mike Fifer I don't even know. I borrowed it from a friend, but I think it was a Sony Handicam(?). I could be wrong. I'll double check on the model designation because I was actually really impressed with the quality.

      I think the idea is that the train itself sort of acts like a plunger as it heads into the tunnel. Only the east portal has a door, and trains are working hard as they climb in the eastbound direction. As the locomotives enter the tunnel, they start to pollute the air and consume the oxygen in the air. But, by the simple laws of displacement, if a train is heading towards the closed door, it naturally moves all of that air out of the way. Since the only escape for the air is the open west portal, this ensures that the dirty air is evacuated towards the rear of the train while the lead locomotives (and of course the train crew) have clean air.
      The tunnel is so long, that if the door weren’t there, the exhaust fumes would become so thick that they’d overtake the lead engines, which would be a real problem for a tunnel of this length.
      Hopefully I didn’t over-explain that as if you’re 8 years old, haha. That’s just my understanding based on what I’ve been told.

    do you need a special permit to get in there? I passed by it and thought about going down to see it but it looked like only authorized personal can go in?

      Yeah! It was pretty beat up. Someone spray painted GN reporting marks on it for some reason. And that's really cool! I'd like to try and build some Boeing cars myself sometime.

      +railfan220 I think it got GN marks while stored at Interbay. BNSF uses them for retired or stored engines. I'll have to post some pictures of mine when it gets a little closer to done.

      @sixriversrail 9 років тому

      +Northwest Railfan Yes, the GN marks were put on years back at Interbay. It sat on the SE side for way too long.
      Great video, and Skykomish sure has changed a lot in just the past few years!
