I was one of the people who wrote to the Letterman show to complain about Dave's interference when this guy was on the first time. I got a call at home from one of the producers or staff members who said they showed my letter to Dave and he agreed with me and decided to re-book Mr. Silver. Geez, was I the only one who complained or do they tell that to everyone? They gave me the date so I could watch. I tuned in only to see Dave engage in the same childish, egocentric behavior. He just could not control himself. What a jerk.
yea, but ya gotta admit Sylver called him out with the "Save your breath, David, ...you might need it to blow up your date later ..." - that was so F'ing funny !
"Afghanistan Banana Stand". It was a line a hypnotist used in a classic heist movie, "The Hot Rock", starring Robert Redford and Zero Mostel. If you are interested in hypnotism, it's a great scene to look for. You can Google the phrase.
It's depressing how many people are saying that Letterman was unfair to this guy. No one is obligated to play along with a bullshit artist, especially not when he's practicing his deceptions on a mass audience. If only the rest of the media were as ready to call a spade a spade...
I don't care for this guy's stage presence, but Letterman really interfered with it (again) to the point it's difficult to draw any conclusions. The woman's laughter and facial expressions would suggest to me that she wasn't hypnotized. From what I know of hypnotism, no hypnotist could reliably say he could successfully do an instant induction on any random subject, especially in that environment.
I saw Marshall a year ago live, and I have gone on to study hypnosis myself because he was so inspirational. He's less smug looking today...but still commanding. Marshall could not have stood on that woman if she were just trying consciously to be that stiff. Frozen muscles ...what we call catalepsy...is a hypnotic phenomenon indicative of a certain level of trance. It's a common misunderstanding, exemplified by Letterman, that people are asleep when hypnotized. When a hypnotist says "Sleep' he means, "relax deeply." In reality, subjects are awake, able to hear, and responsive to commands...just highly suggestible, with brainwaves in a slower state closer to the sleep state. So that woman could be in deep trance and still adjust her clothing. Letterman's rudeness made it nearly impossible for Marshall to explain the situation, let alone control it...which a hypnotist must be able to do. Letterman also falsely assumed that Marshall was controlling his subjects directly. All hypnosis is really self-hypnosis, based on the hypnotist's ability to create belief and compliance. A hypnotist needs to create the environment in which subjects will respond appropriately. Then it's up to them. It's amazing Marshall was able to achieve what he achieved, with that pompous asshole dancing around him, making fun of what he didn't understand, and determined to destroy his own guest. Fortunately, prepping the subjects meant they could tune David out, and respond to Marshall even with other noise and distractions.
Is this a Marshal Sylver sock puppet account? I remember both of these episodes well, this dude was the most smarmy cheeseball showbiz clown imaginable, of course Letterman was going to totally rip on him and make fun of him. Had he (or his agent) never seen Letterman's show? Also cut from this video is the introduction in which Dave makes an allusion to avoiding pending legal action, making it clear that they're only having this doofus back on to avoid a lawsuit, not because of popular outrage from Letterman viewers.
I went to a Marshal Sylver show in Vegas for Prom. My date and two others from our group got chosen. All three were hypnotized to be stiff as steel bars and he used them as steps. I still have access to the VHS. Crazy stuff!!
David Letterman showed contempt and disrespect for a well-known hypnotist Marshall Sylver. Marshall Sylver has appeared before large audiences of 2,000 people here in Vancouver BC Canada and is the real deal. More mature stage presence these days. Marshall has let the sunglasses go and has increased his credibility by doing so. Hypnosis is a real phenomena and people should research the topic before meeting their guest on such a talk show. David became defensive and rude to Marshall because he didn't do his research, and did not believe hypnosis is possible. Very disrespectful to a professional hypnotist and well-known stage presence in Las Vegas, Marshall Sylver, the Millionaire Maker, who is a millionaire himself. I respect Marshall and hypnosis as a self-improvement healing modality.
Really? In April 2003, Sylver was indicted for theft after nine of his self-improvement program's 1,200 clients alleged that he had failed to honor a money-back guarantee.
This may be my second favorite Letterman show! Dave was always such a miserable jerk to his guest-- if they celebs he'd be kissing up miserably, otherwise he'd do everything to humiliate them. I loved seeing him getting shut down when he tried to sabotage the act. (My favorite episode is where he pissed off Oliver Reed who wanted to punch Dave out).
Letterman is Jealous as F
Of what?
@@stephenstone8480 Apparently Dave is an attention whore.

Marshal if full of crap. You don't think she'd be able to withstand his part of his weight without being in a 'trans'?
Agreed, David should of just let Marshal Sylver do his hypnotic act and sit at his desk instead of interrupting so much.
Maybe, just maybe you should invest in a sense of humor...the guy was full of shit, and Dave knew it...
@@jeffgomez88 Are you...uh...familiar with, uh...everything David fucking Letterman has EVER DONE?
Incredible to see the world's fakest hypnotist, I mean fastest. What a hoot!
“Save your breadth David. You’ll need it to blow up your date later.” He didn’t like Dave at all.
How can’t you not laugh when someone show up dressed like a penguin with sunglasses on a TV show
Loooool
A penguin....loooool. indeed, it resembles one.

This guy was pretty talented and Letterman was just being a jerk for some reason.

Well, it looks like Marshall also goes by the name Jeffery Lyle Segal
@@mojohand74 No, but I do also go by the name Jeffrey Powers when I do my own stage shows now. Look for me on UA-cam.
#MeToo
absolutely. more than you can even know.
He could have done it better. He selected the the worst subject, as she was just pretending to be hypnotized (seems to me).
No but she was still stiff if you notice. Sylver did a great job.
Victorian witches used to do this type of hypnotism as demonstrated by Derren Brown on UA-cam. Sylver was ahead of his time.
Everyone is just pretending to be hypnotized on stage always.
letterman wa s aa bit of a prick, but this guy is still going, marshall sylver hypnotist

Letterman was being a giant dick. Asking talent on and then being a jerk to them for his own amustment.
The guy is a hack and scammer. You can’t expect Dave to have a shred of respect for the showbiz equivalent of an amway salesman.
The REAL JOKE is this clown who calls himself a hypnotist!
