I loved that book, read it several times a bunch of years ago. Though it is still packed from my retirement, I’m ready to take it up again. I didn’t realize there was a group. Uh-oh, I see I’m signed in as my cat’s page instead of my own. I’m WVSunbird (Willa Shaffer), who uploaded this video. Thank you so much for your comment and inspiration.
Hi…just wanted to say thanks again while signed in as myself. I love the book Simple Abundance, and I love this song and the artist. Kathy is from the same town I’m from, and I attended high school with her brother. We are so proud of her and how she has lived her life with absolute joy and grace, full of giving. She now hosts Mountain Stage and is doing a phenomenal job of keeping that project soaring.
I appreciate all the comments this video has garnered. Naturally, I love this song and the artist. Kathy is from the same town I am, and I attended high school with her older brother. We are so proud of her and how she has lived her life with absolute joy and grace, full of giving. She now hosts Mountain Stage and is doing a phenomenal job of keeping that project soaring. I adore her.
Love this song and love Kathy! One of the most underrated country singers of all time...It's sad, but ever since she voiced her support for AIDS awareness and was active in the AIDS movement and lost some friends to the disease, the holier-than-though CMA has seen to it that she has not been even nominated for any country music awards since that time...This one reason I will never support the CMA or anything they are associated with...Kathy will always rock in my book! :)
It's 5 March 2024 and I came across the book Simple Abundance In a drawer my mom kept some of her books, so am here 😊 to listen to the song as the writer speaks about. Much love ❤️ as we all embrace the real treasures of life.
I've always thought this to be one of the better country songs that didn't do as well as I thought it should have. I guess I liked the message of the song. One of my all-time favorites.
Think so too. It means different things to different people. Kathy pays wonderful homage to Don William's original. I suffered from depression (now in treatment) and THAT was me. My brain ignoring all who cared deeply about me in its efforts to destroy me. Those who cared, since I (obviously) didn't care about myself, got me the treatment I deserved, when I thought I was deserving of only destruction.
I'm sitting here watching the rain outside and listening to this. With the recent events in this country, we are truly a nation parched and empty. These days I don't take much for granted because I know that you can turn your head and everything can be gone.
We did it Auntie Pat. I know you and mom are up there with our Lord looking down on all of us kids. God has two beautiful angels. ❤️We love both of you. Our hearts are broke..but we'll press on as you would have would have wanted. I love you both. God bless you ✝️
Now it's people out in public just in a trance with their phones, able to see or talk to anyone in the world, yet enirely alone. Very ironic that we're better connected with anyone and everyone, yet we're more isolated than ever before.
And yet people are still happy and grateful to interact if we are willing to take the initiative to start a conversation. People are lonely today. We need actual face-to-face communication. Listening to someone is a wonderful gift to give, and it enriches us.
I came across this song because of a book that’s about abundance and I have to say I am only 22 but this song says a lot and I feel like I can speak for a lot of people old or young we take life for granted because we’re focused on ourselves and only reflect on our lives when it’s to late... she’s an amazing person for being able to make a song with so much wisdom and awareness that a lot of us don’t want to realize
Call me a sentimental sap, but I don't really care. I listened to thisfor the first time in a long time tonight... and bawled. So many friends that have slipped away. But, great many great memories in the wake of time.
I have a huge number of people that will say they are my friend. Sad thing is I have not a one that knows why occasionally, seemingly for no reason a tear will slip from my eye. No I’m not a kid. I’m nigh 62 , widowed, 4 children, 6 grandchildren. There goes that tear again................
Rick Bailey hey Brother I'm 60 years old I am a grown man that ain't afraid to say I cry at times, I would much rather have a tender heart and admit it than to be hard hearted!!! I thank God I'm not hard hearted!!! May God Bless All!!!
My nephew passed due to a car accident and hearing this reminds me how lucky I am to have known him for as long as I did. Never will foget that fun little kid so full of life and questions about the world.
The Keyboard player is my uncle.. Well not really my uncle but growing up we my siblings and I called him uncle. His name is Gene Lorenzo. He and my dad were really good friends. His cousin, Bill Capizzi was best man at my parents wedding. Bill was in the movie "Heart and Souls". He played the ticket guy at the race track. Great movie. Got to meet Kathy Mattea because of my uncle. She is an awesome woman!
It appears I never did respond to your comment six years ago -- shame on me! I did acknowledge your uncle's name in the description above, but I see no reply here. I appreciate your identifying him for this video, which has since received significant attention and has been shared many times, so it's great to be able to give credit where it's due. Also, you are apparently the reason I finally watched the "Heart and Souls" film, which was thoroughly enjoyable. Thank you so much! Kathy Mattea is definitely an awesome woman....I'm in complete agreement on that. If you ever get a chance to catch one of her concerts, do it. You won't be sorry. You can check out her schedule and/or sign up for her infrequent newsletters on mattea.com. Cheers!
Can't believe it's been more than 20 years since I first heard this wonderful song. I was a young man then, and now really understand the point of the song. Wish it didn't take so much of my life to understand what it was all about the whole time....
Wow, it's the first time I've listened to this song since it was a hit when I was younger. Between now and then, it has described me and my life perfectly. The power of a song can be amazing. I cried.
In 1989 I took a bunch of songs from Houston to Nashville to try to place them. One of them was titled: "Standing Knee deep in the river, Dying of Thirst". I played them for a Nashville publisher who shall remain nameless for now. He really liked "Knee-deep" and said "Leave it with me and I'll see if I can polish it up a little." A couple of weeks later he wrote me, saying "Can't add anything, so I'm sending it back to you."" A few years go by, and I come across a CD by Don Williams with a song called: Standing knee-deep in the river... So this is the question: Is there any value in a song title? If I wrote a song title called "If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body, Would You Hold It Against Me"?...could anybody write a song using that title and not pay a royalty? We're goin to find out...
Dang I just found this book the last day of April and I have been reading it and I am on the page of Jan 6 when they talk about this song and that’s why I am here! Wow wow wow I am crying
I enjoy this song for its message, how we lose friends. How are lives change and the way ou can find yourself alone. While surrounded by so many. The song makes me remember friends long gone now.Kathy Thanks for the song From happy
I recently went back to London and looked her up. She is someone's mum and she is truly happy. I now know it will never happen for us to be together. The song has a new meaning for me now. I hope she remembers me in a good and kind way. As this is the way I like to think of her. May she be happy for the rest of her days.
She still is an amazing singer, Shannon. Check out her tour dates on mattea.com. Her show continues to evolve, and is guaranteed to make you glad you were there. Thank you for your comment. I've been a fan of Kathy's for ... ever! Still am.
I like songs that make you think and this song does. We take things for granted sometimes. The simplicity of a beautiful friendship. The simplicity of connecting with another human being. I was recently diagnosed with cancer and I will be okay, but this song gets you thinking of those you have met and loved in your journey through life. We think we are alone sometimes, but we really have love surrounding us everyday.
Tremendous song, written by the legendary Bob McDill (many massive hits for Don Williams, Keith Whitley etc) and just a tremendous performance by Miss Mattea!
Classic Country is hard to beat. Stuff nowadays called hot new country it is just not the same. Thanks for the good memories, of Classic Country when its good Thanks
I have been through a lot without his funny sense of life. I know the loss of someone you love everyday I try to remind myself to be kind to others. To be friendly and helpful to my fellow man. To call his sister and brother to see how they are. To remember to say I love you more and to show it in my actions. These things help me to be a better person and I hope to improve someone's life. Thank You and please take care Love from Happymike44
This is for HappyMike44. You seem like you have been thru a lot. So have I. Was married for 34 yrs and didnt know what I had untill she left.. This song really touches my heart too.. Im married to a wonderful lady now and I keep telling myself. DONT SCREW THIS ONE UP> I have seen Kathy in concert and she needs more recognition. She sings with feeling and spirit. Not a big screamer and guitar thrower like some singers. Good luck with your future.. Keep looking up.
This song reminds of my ex who left my life after I asked them to marry me. I lost touch wth them and now think of them every so often. I wonder how our lives might have been. The road might have been different if we had traveled it together. I have come to realize how much I miss them more then ever before.
reminds me of my ex we had just had a baby he played football all the time, I walked away with my and his son, he hated me for it, and still hates me, I wud of luved to have stayed friends he wudnt. his hatred for me made him a poor father. so sad I luved him so much it was suffering postnatal depression, UI just walked away, he cudnt be my friend he can't even speak to me. sad so very sad.
Just an awesome song! So currant now. I've laways loved this one. I remember when I was at the age of 17 or something. I fell in love with country and rock'n roll music. This came out of the radio!
Reminds me of how lucky I am. I have recently started a new chapter in my life. I am happy and looking forward to the future. This song gives me hope for life can change and for the better. But the song is still my favorite and wish Kathy would at least perform once and awhile so we could see her again.
And before you know it you're all alone so if you still have them just remember to love them hard as you can and love them deep in your soul. Remember my friends you'll turn around and the place will be empty.
Love the song, love the video. Did you know that she is regarded as the female version of the man himself 'DOn Williams'? and he sang background vocals for her on her hit, 'Five and Dime'. Talk about angelic collaboration.
A wedding ring means nothing as far as the song goes, I am married and have been for 10 years, I have friends I have missed and people who meant a lot to me that I let pass by.
My best friend from childhood's, mother just passed, Larmarrous came home for her funeral. I hurt for his loss, but it was so nice to reconnect with him in person. My prayers and thoughts are with him and his family. This song reminds me of true friends.
I love this song I love to sing along, I met her once and got her autograph on the CD..she is amazing in concert...very deep message here love the lyrics
You're so welcome...my sentiments exactly! Turn yourself on to other Kathy Mattea work. She is a super-talent who is also an incredibly warm and wonderful human being. I am addicted to the way I feel when I listen to Kathy's music, and going to one of her intimate concerts feeds my spirit for weeks afterward. I am deeply grateful for her!
First time hearing this song. Simple Abundance (A Daybook of Comfort and Joy) by Sarah Ban Breathnach - This song is mentioned on Day 6 (Jan 6th). Good Song! Great Book!
Thanks to all who've posted comments here. Kathy Mattea is one of the truest, most evolved folks I've ever known, who lives her life with an open heart. If you love her in this, you ought to check out her more recent work. Her last two CDs ("Roses" and "Right Out of Nowhere") are superb examples of beautiful music that touches the spirit. Kathy makes her work an extension of her own heart. (continued in next comment)
Kathy and Suzy may no longer be topping the charts, but they're definitely at the top of their game. If you get a chance to see them in concert, I'd say don't miss it. Kathy's latest CD "Coal" has garnered tons of critical acclaim and was nominated for a Grammy. In concert, she is amazing!
Friends I could count on, I could count on one hand With a leftover finger or two I took 'em for granted, let 'em all slip away Now where they are I wish I knew They roll by just like water And I guess we never learn Go through life parched and empty Standing knee deep in a river and dying of thirst Sometimes I remember sweethearts I've known Some I've forgotten I suppose One or two still linger, oh, and I wonder now Why I ever let them go? They roll by just like water And I guess we never learn Go through life parched and empty Standing knee deep in a river and dying of thirst So the sidewalk is crowded, the city goes by And I rush through another day And a world full of strangers turn their eyes to me But I just look the other way They roll by just like water And I guess we never learn Go through life parched and empty Standing knee deep in a river and dying of thirst They roll by just like water And I guess we never learn Go through life parched and empty Standing knee deep in a river and dying of thirst 词曲作者:Bucky Jones / Dickey Lee / Bob Mcdill
dong li: Thank you for the lyrics . Much appreciated. This is the story of my life and so many memories and regrets ..Beautiful words and I love Kathy Mattea!!! She looks wonderful here.
Every 6th January, a group of Simple Abundance book readers will come here to listen to this song and remember what matters ❤

Feeling blue in November 2023. This song popped out of the archives of my mind. Tomorrow will be a better day for everyone.
Love this song and love Kathy! I got to meet Kathy in person...twice...in meet and greets after her shows. There are No words to describe that experience...NONE...just AWESOME...
Me also, twice! Gonna make it thrice in VA early March!
At 76 This song hits home
My favorite country song..
Have you seen the live version which I think is cut from a CMA concert ? It's fabulous.
It's 5 March 2024 and I came across the book Simple Abundance In a drawer my mom kept some of her books, so am here 😊 to listen to the song as the writer speaks about.
Much love ❤️ as we all embrace the real treasures of life.
i miss the days of kathy mattea, suzy bogguss, etc... being on top of the charts
I've always thought this to be one of the better country songs that didn't do as well as I thought it should have. I guess I liked the message of the song. One of my all-time favorites.
I heard this 22 years ago, I luv the message it sends.
Mine too

Don Williams song.
I agree totally.
We in West Virginia are VERY proud of our home grown girl. She never forgot where she came from. Great song...Great person singing it.
I'm sitting here watching the rain outside and listening to this. With the recent events in this country, we are truly a nation parched and empty. These days I don't take much for granted because I know that you can turn your head and everything can be gone.
Kathy Mattea is like the cousin that everybody has, and everybody just loves. She seems so grounded
This is the first time I see this video. Always listen to this song but never watch the video. 😁
I say this all the time. I used to make the most wonderful connections with people just by looking them in the eye. Now everyone's looking down.
And yet people are still happy and grateful to interact if we are willing to take the initiative to start a conversation. People are lonely today. We need actual face-to-face communication. Listening to someone is a wonderful gift to give, and it enriches us.
Kathy always sang from the heart and this song 'Standing Knee Deep--gives the heart a moment to reflect. Love her music!
This song makes me remember those gone out of my life. It brings tears to me when I hear it. Kathy is so lovely here.
Me too as the tears fall
This has to be one of my fav songs ever. It’s so beautiful
This is also my favorite song she did ! She is greatly underrated !

I guess we are all here cause of the book 😅
Very underrated singer, nice voice. Couple good songs i like of hers.
One of the most profound song ever written.
Lord knows we could all learn from this song now...

Hello Meghan
I haven't heard this song in years praise GOD
Can't believe it's been more than 20 years since I first heard this wonderful song. I was a young man then, and now really understand the point of the song. Wish it didn't take so much of my life to understand what it was all about the whole time....
it's amazing this tune.
how life goes by so quickly,
wen we can see with eyes that know,
it's to late for change
Wow, it's the first time I've listened to this song since it was a hit when I was younger. Between now and then, it has described me and my life perfectly. The power of a song can be amazing. I cried.
this song made me cry when I first heard it and it still does...LOL! I love Kathy Mattea, her music and voice moves me deeply
I thought that I was the only one. By the second verse, without fail, I'm under water.
In 1989 I took a bunch of songs from Houston to Nashville to try to place them. One of them was titled: "Standing Knee deep in the river, Dying of Thirst". She is someone's mum and she is truly happy.
I now know it will never happen for us to be together.
The song has a new meaning for me now.
I hope she remembers me in a good and kind way.
As this is the way I like to think of her.
May she be happy for the rest of her days.

God how I miss the people in my life that have gone on so much.
Very powerful song with one of the deepest messages about friendship!!!
Great voice....brilliant melody and lyrics. From a 72 yr old Aussie...who strums along late at night to classics lie this...
I have loved this song for so long. Every time I hear it, it turns on the water works. The message is one we all need to hear. Absolutely love her.
I'm rereading Simple Abundance book. Now thanks to UA-cam I have a chance to listen to the song mentioned. Thanks for posting! ❤️
It's 2020 and we're all apart. Let us not die of thirst when we are all together again.
Kathy Mattea has a beautiful strong and clear voice and this song really shows her great abilities
I like songs that make you think and this song does. We take things for granted sometimes. The simplicity of a beautiful friendship. The simplicity of connecting with another human being. I was recently diagnosed with cancer and I will be okay, but this song gets you thinking of those you have met and loved in your journey through life. Tremendous song, written by the legendary Bob McDill (many massive hits for Don Williams, Keith Whitley etc) and just a tremendous performance by Miss Mattea!
With all of the evil in our nation, this song has a powerful statement to people of faith.
Classic Country is hard to beat. Stuff nowadays called hot new country it is just not the same.
Thanks for the good memories, of Classic Country when its good
Thanks
A great song that everyone can relate to sung by an equally great singer.
Great song and so true. Anyone else feel sorry for the old guy in the video or am I just a big o`l softy?
I have been through a lot without his funny sense of life.
I know the loss of someone you love everyday I try to remind myself to be kind to others.
To be friendly and helpful to my fellow man.
To call his sister and brother to see how they are.
To remember to say I love you more and to show it in my actions.
These things help me to be a better person and I hope to improve someone's life.

I remember loving this song as a young kid in the late 80s. And I still love it today. I listen to it randomly whenever I think of it.
Beautifully written
Such a fantastic song
enmaxus, listening to this song makes me tear up also. Thoughts of old friends and former loves flood my memory....incredible song.

A privileged voice for a great song. Kathy Mattea is very beautiful and sings with her heart.

My deepest sympathies to you. The year this was writtne, my beloved nephew died..It gave me comfort to know how we must appreciate life.

But the song is still my favorite and wish Kathy would at least perform once and awhile so we could see her again.
I needed to hear this today. . .
Just saw Kathy Mattea here in Maine last week. She is still great!
Cherish the ones you love
And before you know it you're all alone so if you still have them just remember to love them hard as you can and love them deep in your soul. Remember my friends you'll turn around and the place will be empty.
had it in our church services, sung by my great wife...

Kathy Mattea at her climax point of her career with this sweet song!!!!!

she is so blessed to be able to give us a message so strong.
First time hearing this song. Simple Abundance (A Daybook of Comfort and Joy) by Sarah Ban Breathnach - This song is mentioned on Day 6 (Jan 6th). Good Song! Great Book!

Keep coming back to this -Great song superbly done..
my all time favorite song
thank you for sharing this wonderful song.
Played this video in church.

kathy ・・・・Thank You・・・・・
Friends I could count on, I could count on one hand
With a leftover finger or two
I took 'em for granted, let 'em all slip away
Now where they are I wish I knew
They roll by just like water
And I guess we never learn
Go through life parched and empty
Standing knee deep in a river and dying of thirst
Sometimes I remember sweethearts I've known
Some I've forgotten I suppose
One or two still linger, oh, and I wonder now
Why I ever let them go?
They roll by just like water
And I guess we never learn
Go through life parched and empty
Standing knee deep in a river and dying of thirst
So the sidewalk is crowded, the city goes by
And I rush through another day
And a world full of strangers turn their eyes to me
But I just look the other way
They roll by just like water
And I guess we never learn
Go through life parched and empty
Standing knee deep in a river and dying of thirst
They roll by just like water
And I guess we never learn
Go through life parched and empty
Standing knee deep in a river and dying of thirst
