- This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Did God create the universe? After working through the science of stars and the origin of the universe this is the question that astrophysicist Father George Coyne poses. Merging the hard science of element creation with the religious question, did a divine creator start it all; Father George examines the relation between the two.
Mathematician, philosopher, astronomist, Catholic priest and former director of the Vatican Observatory, Father George V. Coyne is a fascinating real-life representation of the paradoxical battle between science and religion.

I always learn so much whenever I listen to Dr. Coyne. He will truly be missed.
I was privileged enough to attend this TEDx event and George Coyne was by far the best presenter of the group. To answer George's question... I think that it is extremely rare to find a religious individual whom are willing to questioning their holy books... and in all honesty is so refreshing to hear him say "I don't know". The problem with religion and science is that science does not claim to have infinite knowledge or power, it must be learned and proven on its own. The contrary is religious believers are taught to never question the word of god, and to just accept it as absolute power or knowledge, which takes away from the learning process of finding scientific truth. In my humble opinion, not knowing is a beautiful thing and we should strive for as much scientific understanding as possible. This is why I choose to reject organized religion based on ancient texts of an unquestionable deity, and focus on having a stronger physical understanding of our universe.
Is it not extremely rare to find a scientist who is willing to question his science books replete with experiments and analyses which could be wrong?
@@joedellaselva1251 I think it happens more than we know. It seems the Catholic Church is not peopled, totally, with fools and the delusioned. There are many who would agree with George. He is their spokesperson. I suspect it is the realisation of this that persuades many prominent atheists to return to the church eventually.
@@tonedumbharry The Catholic Church is firstly not incompatible with Science. In any case questioning itself is not a sin so yeah.

@@LASLAY13 There is no claim at least Philosophically that would challenge the Catholic Faith. Evolution for example.
I came across Father Coyne through a Bill Maher interview and then I watched an interview he had with Richard Dawkins. I highly recommend everybody here to watch both of them (the latter is about 1 hour long, but so entertaining that you won't notice). This man is certainly an intelligent person and is worth listening to him.

The first preacher to make any sense. Always though religious scientists were out to disprove science, or contradict it. Very refreshing.

We were made in the image of God, god meaning nature which includes everything organic, the stars and the galaxies. Everything is a copy of a copy, an imperfection reflection of the pure alpha perfection.

He did not know as a physicist but said that he was sure God created the Universe from his faith background.
And now so-called atheist are having trouble saying "I don't know" as they've become too prideful to admit current limitations of science.

He knows God made the universe as a man of faith but as a Physicist there is a lot he doesn't know. And that is what makes him admirable.

As +Chris Canning said below, there's a wonderful talk between Father Coyne and Richard Dawkins (for the best quality - watch the series that's in "parts" - parts 1-7 - there's no "ads"). Its about the belief in evolution with regard to the Catholic Church. The series is very, very interesting, how as a scientitist and priest he states "his" understanding of evolution and "his" belief in god. Wonderful conversation, should be required viewing (at least) by all Catholics.
Father coyn. Will be missed, he helped bridge the gap between science and religion.

There are getting to be more and more good scientific reasons to believe in a Creator, reasons arising out of cosmology, biology, and physics. So, it's not as if science is silent on the subject, or that religious belief and science never cross paths. Like Fr. Coyne, I'm a believer in both science and religion, and I find the ongoing contest (if I may use that word) between them fascinating. Fortunately, there are open minded people on both sides of the controversy. I'm expecting that science will someday prove all or part of the religious view to be correct, and then we'll see a general shift in attitudes. But, of course, as always there will remain skeptics on both sides holding extremist views. That's life!

He could have kept on going on the science route, but he is conditioned to still bring up a God. No reason to go there at all. Nature is all there is. Why isn't that enough?
@@nookymonster1the reason it's not enough is that the very fact that it's a priest, and former Vatican Astronomer that's giving the TED talk, places the question so squarely central, he couldn't be expected to ignore it, just as we can't in an open discussion.

Found out about him a week before his death. Since then, I've looked more into his approach to science and religion, and I've greatly appreciated his thoughts. Wish I could have known about him sooner.

I remember when Carl Sagan first told us about the stardust. It made me think it was a miracle. However, I agree scientists should not exclude God or insert God when talking about science. If they do, they aren't doing science. No, I don't understand whey there is a conflict between science and spiritual exploration. I would like to see scientists and theologians work together.

What are the implications of the universe being within us?
Probably this will be where the next paradigm we are pioneering will develop.
We will also discover how many of our desires, thoughts and intentions influence the phenomena of nature that surround us.
By changing the same elements of will that are in us, namely the molecules that make up our essence, we change not only our perception of reality, but also what is dangling to this world.
And the method for changing our inner self (which also came from that moment of creation) is the wisdom of kabbalah.

Biblical literalism. That's your answer. Non-Literalist Christians in America have no problems accepting science and their religion. I would like to add, because the universe is imperfect and in my faith god is perfect, I can only surmise imperfection is perfection.

We know that we know nothing and that is why is no point to ask because we will never know ultimate objective truth as it probably dont exist...Anything else is only opinion theory and hipothesis.Hopeing in reason and ability of our minds to read and discover " objective truth and real nature of things " is pathetic" .We can find a little bite how things are made ( in frame of science )but never find " why " and either religion science philosophy want be able to answear it. We think automatically that behind everything must be certain " cause". May be there is no cause

What is actually happening at this point is science has made so many discoveries that religion can no longer deny..There was a time when religion and science were at total odds with each other..Seems to me science is winning the battle and it's about time..
You are correct that science is winning the battle of how natural events happen through natural causes. God is not an answer to those questions because he isn't an item within the natural universe, but rather The Creator God in which all contingent things have their being.

+styot Philosophy (natural theology) and revelation. Knowledge is not reduced to only scientific knowledge. You yourself who advocates 'scientism", are actually advocating a philosophical argument.
David Viscuso It's true that science has it's roots in philosophy but it's kinda doing it's own thing also, for example advocating a philosophical argument isn't going to get you very far in science where empirical evidence is required. Science has a proven track record for improving our knowledge which is why it's valued so highly, philosophy seems a lot more speculative and doesn't have the mechanisms for testing it's conclusions and falsification, which is why science is generally very good at building consensus and in philosophy pretty much anything goes and there is widespread disagreement on pretty much everything between philosophers. Revelation as a mechanism for acquiring knowledge seems completely hopeless as there are so many contradictory revelations out there, how do you distinguish the good from the bad? It's even worse then philosophy for having a way to test conclusions and falsify the bad ones. Maybe ironically for your argument it often is science that dose falsify religious "revelations".

I dont know abt stardust....i just know we are spiritual being into human.thats it.

We maybe made from stardust but that star dust has been pretty damn busy for billions of years to actually bring about the lifeforms that we see today. i disagree that were born of stardust as he puts it. I think the things that shaped that stardust into us is much more important what about the weather systems, THE CYCLE OF THE SEASONS the struggle of surviving 4.5 billion winters that pushed life to survive it or die or the fact that we and every species plant and animal are common descendants of an ancient single celled organism (the seed of life) theres great beauty in imagining the course of life and the events and cycles that shape us into what we have become. I THINK RATHER THAN USING ''WE ARE BORN OF STARDUST'' AS SOME KIND OF SLOGAN WE SHOULD SAY WE ARE BORN OF THE CYCLES AND PATTERNS OF OUR PLANET WITHIN OUR SOLAR SYSTEM AND prehaps the complex dynamics of diverse species existing and coexisting with each other. But scientists seem to leave all the beauty and the fundumental views of our reality to one side
The Universe did not need a god to be here. Some of our brains do need a god to cope with mortality and the unknown. The personal god that those brains create will die when those brains cease to function. That in itself is a good thing IMO.

God tells us in the book of Genesis 2:7 "And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
