  • How good was Iffy Melifonwu at the end of last season? He played a huge role for the Lions in their run to an NFC North title and 2 playoff wins. But he might not get the playing time he saw a year ago. We discuss Brian branch and the organization's love for him and the possible shift to Safety. Also, how did the Lions fare in the PFF Guard rankings? And we finally find a QB list with Jared Goff getting his due. #firstlisten

With the injuries we had in the secondary, last year, having this much depth in the secondary is the best thing ever.

You’re exactly right everybody’s overlooked in this thing like it’s some other kind of plan we needed depth. Hell, you had Vildor at starting corner In the NFC championship game when he won’t even make the team this year most likely. Kirby and iffy will be locking down the safety with Branch helping out here and there with different looks but he will be in slot corner! Rakeshaw, Amik, Moseley, that’s all gravy and depth. Davis got that contract which I’m not a big fan about so those guys can take Davis off that mountain for that corner spot. I think Arnold is a lock in for the other spot, I do like the rookie on one side and as of now.. it looks like Davis will be locking up the other corner position, but we will see all those players on the field this year!

They’re getting the players to play situational football against the teams they will face. Building a very versatile team. I also think they will have a very good special teams unit.

It is going to be a knock down drag out for positions. You keep saying a player has to play because of where he was drafted. I don't think that is going to be the case.

iron sharpens iron, its honestly the best thing that we have this much starting talent, the cream will rise to the top and we will play that. if rakestraw an amik are the top guys in summer training then thats who we play and they probably deserved it, however whoever is on the top of that mountain can be knocked off if as the season goes people get better and some get worse. I just hate these ideas of 'static' starters in this day and age, this isnt 70s football.

BB is the starting Nickel because he's the best at it on the team. I expect BB will play both SS & FS depending on the down & distance and game match ups.
Iffy will still get plenty of snaps if he plays like he did last year.

The nice thing about all the CB's is the Lions will have backups. This was a huge problem the last few years. Injuries could not be filled in for with any kid of quality. As far a guards go, who cares? It's PFF. They seem to have an anti-Lions bias.

That Spielman interview is must see. And I loved his bit on Branch. I love how he fell to us because he is too slow. Then in his 1st Game, he picks off Mahomes in Arrowhead and runs past everybody to the endzone. Nobody could catch him.
Kerby will be the odd man out.

Dude, it’s his spot to lose he balled out! He was great on run support, played back and was always in good position. Plus he’s got closing speed with great change of direction and he had a few sacks and a lot of blitz pressures. If the guy can stay healthy he’s a CB playing Safety and should be a Pro Bowler.

Branch can play all over. He’s gonna be the slot corner! Of course he’s gonna be all over the field with three high safety looks and other schemes. Amik, Rakeshaw, those guys are great depth something we didn’t have last year I hope Mosley will be all right.

The Lions found ways to keep a bunch of guys along the DL back in the day. Suh, Fairley, Ansah, Jones, Reid, Webster, Mosley- They will find a way to keep at least Arnold, Rakestraw, Branch, Davis, Joseph, Iffy and Amik.
This is what teams that build a strength do.
You can kind of already see the defensive roster is going to be the 7 DBs (minimum). Hutchinson, Houston, Davenport, Paschal, Reader, Alim, Cominsky (7 DL minimum). Barnes Anzalone, Campbell (3 LB minimum) meaning you’re at 17 of a possible 20-21 spots IF you go on pure numbers and think they’ll keep 20-23 guys each side (based on a full roster).
You can probably figure Wingo makes it. JRM will given his ST value. Moseley probably. And Gilmore perhaps.
The last spots will be between Rodríguez (who id guess makes it based on the weakness at LB) and Betts or Moore or Martin. Or Levi. Really, if they were to dump all those guys, they’d be churning the bottom of the roster at each position group. I wouldn’t see moving on from any of those guys as a big loss.

Kirby was caught out of position but not anything alarming and I’m certain some of that was because of Glenn’s Defense scheme which sometimes drove me nuts last year because he didn’t have the players he will have this year. Kirby will be fine and as long as IFfy can stay healthy, he’s a future Pro Bowler.

You only pressure on a handful of snaps a game. And the run defense is already good. It will be even better with guys like Rakestraw and Arnold who aren’t scared to come up to the line and hit someone.
There’s life after the DL. No. Really.

You still got to pay! That is the blessing and curse of having great drafts. Sewell and AR just got paid and Goff is locked up. They have a solid 2 year window before they are going to have to shell out a lot of money. Hutch first and they should start working on that after this year (3). then Gibbs, LaPorta, and Monty should be extended as soon as the end of this year if still healthy which I think he will be.
