Windowlicker Arrangement Analysis - How Does This Arrangement Work?

- I truly believe that studying the great examples of music helps us find insights that we can use to progress with our own efforts.
I've analysed Windowlicker before from a harmonic standpoint, but this time I look solely at the arrangement. It's so damn good. All those crazy dropped beats, breakdowns, AABBAABB breakdown CCCC etc. waaaaaa!

7:00 Odd Meter is the term, I think.
And in terms of Aphex, it is probably more like odd meter combinatorics with polyrhythms && tempoSwizzling.
haha temposwizzling would be the word, that's a good one.
@danieljacobsonmusic Yeah. That word "swizzle" is essentially the term that is used in GPU programming in regards to "non perfect" parallel processing.
So something like// "value.xy" * "value.z w";
My favorite part of this story is that he was displeased with the amount of distorted bass in some tangential genres, and then decided to purposefully make the highest LUFS(loudness units full scale) bassline ever.
Seriously. It is almost like a sound engineer learning task to get more bass and more LUFS than that one 4 bar loop in windowlicker.
i didn't know that! you know the story about if you analyse the last part with a spectrum analyser you see Richard's face? Because he used metasynth with a scanned pic of his face to make the distorted sound... or so the story goes.
@danieljacobsonmusic Yeah. Bruv was one of the og's in terms of trolling his listeners, fellow musicians and society in general.
The fub part is he was always fun and kind. Although often weird af.
Though mothing like each other Windowlicker is a benchmark for me that Harrmonic Dissassembly by LA Synthesis also meets for top of the game production from a period I feel blessed to have been ensconsed in. That said, music hasnt stopped getting better and better. It has its own organic pulse over time. Or, Time.
yeah I listened to that Harmonic Dissassembly by LA Synthesis, that's a hidden gem that is! thanks for putting me on to that.
yep it never stops. Windowlicker sounds as fresh to me as it did in 1999
pretty sure it was a sample and not his voicr, rjd2 uses the same sample in a famous hiphop beat
You mean the main vocals? It’s definitely his voice manipulated and not a sample. He uses his voice in many tracks.
@@iamzoid well I'm pretty sure it' not... I'm pretty sure the main vocal is a sample and he did some add-lips to it, check out the sample at 1:02 in RJD2's classic hiphop track 'Ghostwriter' and then imagine this sound pitch bend and time stretched... ua-cam.com/video/hY08FkhpPjk/v-deo.html
I did it at home with a vinyl player and played the two parts next to each other and they basically sounded identical...
AFX did a lot of 'pretend production' where he tells people it's synths when it's samples or it's recordings when it's synths etcetera, he basically lies in everything he says to the media to add to the mystery.
It could be he sampled and edited his own voice but knowing him I'm pretty sure he sampled other music (which he actually did very often but spoke about very little) and then made it appear to be his own voice ;-)
@@unfinishedmonkeyrecords hmmm i listened... not convinced at all that this sample is in Windowlicker! there are tons of vocals in windowlicker. even if it is a sample, then fine, i'm wrong, but who cares? he manipulated the shit out of it and made it his own. I'm aware of his using samples like in Xtal for instance, that one is definitely mostly sampled. yes he's a massive troll and tells big porkies, but there are plenty of tracks of his that are not "pretend production" lol
@@danieljacobsonmusic don't get me wrong, I'm a massive afx fan and used to own literally all his music on vinyl until 2016, I'm just saying that because he makes something sound like he did it with his voice, don't mean he actually did it with his own voice :-) and I actually recreated the windowlicker vocal with the rjd2sample back in the day using nothing but a simple pitch bend of a vinyl player and some basic fx.
When I say 'pretend production' I mean he uses ways to 'pretend' he's doing a certain production technique when actually he 's doing it in another way :-) he's so deep into sound design he can make any sound sound like anything really :-) a lot of his drums and glitches are 'real life' samples and a lot his 'real life/organic/instrumental' sounds are actually electronic synthesis so it becomes hard to guess ;-) none of his tracks are 'pretend production' they are all very real and genius ;-) but he may not have made them the way we believe he made them ;-) I think he adores speculation about his sound design techniques lol
ah ok! I agree with all this :)
A lot of stuff we’ll just never know how it was made; yeah I’d say he has a laugh about people arguing all over Reddit about it 😂
