- Initial start up of Caterpillar 3516 diesel generator set engine having serial number index 25Z. This engine has been rebuild deeply by replacement of all critical and recommended parts involved in major overhauling as per Caterpillar parts re-usable guidelines and assembling instructions.

THIS ENGINE IS TUFF!
I've installed about dozen 3516s as emergency power generators and a few as prime power. About half were 480 volts, the other half were 4160.
The largest one had 4 turbos and was rated at 3200 HP@1800 RPM, most were from 2000 - 2500 HP.
They seem to be a pretty good engine but the top ends need overhauled often.
If I remember, the compression ratio is about 13.5:1 so if the block is below about 40F, you'll need starting fluid.
If it's a backup generator, the block is kept warm and they start right up, just as this one.
Glad to read your kind and informative update. Here in Pakistan mostly diesel generator sets are on 400 volts 50 Hertz or 1500 RPM same as that particular prime rated 3516 engine was rebuilt.
Yes I have also hands on experience on quad turbocharger 3500 series HD diesel engines. It's good and more effective. Beside that I have worked on 3100 to 3400 series, C 15 to C18 engines, 3456 Acert engine and some classic engines too along beloved father (late) likewise D342, D343, D346, D348 and D349 having in line long style fuel injection pump group in middle deep inside block and click type valve clearance method along Dual overhead camshaft DOHC 😉😎🇱🇷🇵🇰
13.5 compression? That's awfully low for a Diesel. The E models are at 16.5:1.
@@electric7487 Caterpillar seems to like ultra low compression, just enough to get it started provided the block is warm.
They make up for it with high turbo boost. I've seen nearly 100" on some engines......enough to burn the paint off the tubes from the turbo to the after cooler.........
100" of mercury.....around 50 PSI.

Hmm Dear, it's ABB RR153 twin turbocharger which spins as high as 50,000 RPM likewise whistle of jet engine of Boeing 777 and becomes hot as 600C to 650C temperature to produce finally 1600+ horsepower 😉🇲🇷😎🇱🇷

Good engine did you pre lube before start up? I've built about 30 of these and always pre lube before initial start up after overhaul

Hmm why not. Well it's a V16 twin Turbocharger, dual cam, MUI mechanical unit injector engine.
The firing order of that engine as per standard counter clockwise rotation is as following;
1-6-8-9-13-16-2-3-10-11-14-4-5-7-12-15 😎 🇱🇷 😉 🇵🇰
Why did it have to be rebuilt was it leaking oil? Injectors shot?
Dear, it had run 17,000 plus running hours since new in 1992. Lube oil consumption, both seals and wear sleeves of crankshaft were leaking poorly due to blow by. Weak ABB turbocharger and seepage in cylinder head gaskets were over all conclusion to rebuilt it and gave her a new virgin life 😉🇵🇰😎🇱🇷

@@rudycarlson511 Well as per Caterpillar service manual recommendations besides annual fuel consumption parallel to load factor and running hours. Complete or major overhauling is definitely due on 18,000 service meter units. Because we must have to retain reliability of engine major components to make job done at right, on competitive budget and minimize down time 🎓🚩

If it is an electronic injector, cut off the cylinder injector with the et. and do the compression test,
hmm. No it`s not EUI as Caterpillar 3500B and C series diesel engines are designed on EUI electronic unit injector system. My engine has MUI mechanical unit injector.
Well for EUI engine start up, you may watch my another video of 3512B engine. And we made cut out test of all electronic injectors by ET electronic technician respectively.

Hmmm US$ 25K - 30K for CAT 3516 under normal OEM In-frame overhaul kit.
How do you start without radiator and coolant system ?
Hmmm technically possible and safe. On lower end we placed a solid metallic plate along gasket on water pump impeller housing same as shape of water line connection towards regulator housing.
Then refill coolant as high as upper lever of jacket water temperature regulator housing until you can touch coolant level by insertion of finger 🤞 inside regulator housing.
Always make sure you have installed temperature regulator in housing along vent valve and adequate seal 👄. By that way definitely you may control coolant level inside engine at adequate level and 248-5513 CAT regulators would not have to release coolant flow from cylinder block until jacket water temperature reached @ 82C at least in favorable time.
In that favorable time we can analyze engine sound, emission and other critical parameters. We usually use infrared thermometer temperature gun in that scenario rather than rely on temperature switch 😉🇵🇰🇺🇲😊🔧🛠️💰

Dear, it's 1500 KVA, 1200 KW, 400 Volts, 50 Hertz and 0.8 power factor. Total ampere capacity is 2165 on 💯% load. About 210 liters ⛽ consumption diesel on 80% load. 13,000 kg weight of generator set and 416 liters lube oil 🛢️ capacity.

Hmmm. Testing adjusting of valve clearance and fuel timing injector travel always made by Caterpillar recommended tool 0.020 inch valve inlet and 0.040 inch valve exhaust. Both float bridge (adjustment free) 😉 🇵🇰😎🇱🇷. Well fuel timing for Caterpillar 3516 MUI is 86.90 mm 🎓🚩

@@sohaibshahid7694 hmm nope. Indeed it is an industrial generator set engine Caterpillar 3516 for a female 1200 KW / 1500 KVA. The engine is modified on Woodward 2301A electronic governor powered by 24 VDC.
We only have had to make an engine initial start up without any electronic governor and that's why we had to control fuel manually by hand 😎🇵🇰🇱🇷😉

Why not. You may verify engine initial start up behavior without air filter assembly even could make load trial too for a while 😉🇵🇰😎🇱🇷

Off course, it was made directly to the engine oil gallery point. The manual operated hand pump was used before engine cranking.

Something’s completely wrong here: this engine has to run smoothly, but it runs now as a wrong timed V6, and the engineers should have been aware about that.... Something simply should not be outsourced. Sorry guys.

Hmmm engine jacket water circuit is completely filled by soft water up to upper regulator housing before start up as seen in video satisfactorily. We did have to monitor temperature by infrared Lazer gun 🇵🇰😉😎🇱🇷

Well mechanical unit injector MUI Caterpillar 3500 series all engines almost have ability to produce 💯 🐎 horse power per cylinder.
Caterpillar 3508 is almost 815 HP, 170 mm cylinder bore and 190 mm stroke. Some late models having quad turbocharger engine arrangement have more power, better fuel effeciency and iron piston besides B series EUI model 😉🇵🇰😎🇱🇷
