Why does government raise money through Sovereign Gold Bonds?

The biggest advantage is, the government doesn't need to import gold resulting in a lower deficit ultimately preventing rupee depreciation.
It also has some advantages to buyers also, but one should only if you want to invest in gold for the long term.

So even though SGB are not technically gold backed and investor does not have direct claim on it, SGB is indirectly backed by gold that RBI is purchasing. It is actually very genius idea. Indian public gets best way to invest in gold and RBI use the same money to buy gold and increase foreign exchange reserves. It strengthens our currency as well as side effect.
