  • This Video demonstrates the effect of Axial loading on Natural frequency. Generally Modal analysis are carried out in unloaded condition. But, Can axial loading change the Natural frequency? is a critical question when the structure is subjected to large axial loads. When the loads are considered to calculate modal analysis, it is called Pre-stressed Modal Analysis.
The structure should have adequate margin to avoid any potential resonance. Resonance can be catastrophic if it designed with inadequate damping. Some of the historic examples is Tacoma bridge.
Simple Example was taken to demonstrate the implication of axial load on natural frequency.
Typically these calculations are carried out in two steps and this video shows how to do such analysis using open source software. Geometric modeling and meshing was done using GMSH and the finite element analysis was carried out using Calculix.
it was interesting to note that when the compressive load approach buckling load, the natural frequency approaches zero.
    Hope the Video was useful.
