There is no such thing as ‘the novel’ . It’s a series of short stories combined to form Goodbye to Berlin, and the play I am a Camera ( the source for the musical Cabaret combined the Sally Bowles story with Mr Norris Changes Trains. John Kander more recently disclosed that neither he nor Fred Ebb liked the film version at all. Most notably the film abandoned the moving sub plot involving Fraulien Schneider and the grocer.
PS The Bob Fosse film had very little to do with the literary source as Sally Bowles is British not American and was based loosely on a real person Jean Ross who sobered after she left Berlin and went off to the Spanish Civil War and then worked for various left wing newspapers in Britain while frequenting the Cafe Royal in London. She died penniless in 1973.
