Sew to Sell Multifunction crossbody bum bag fanny pack dog walking treat carry all phone holder

- This bag design has been in my head for some time. I wanted something I could use when walking the dog that contained treats, pooh bags, and a purse to hold my phone and keys. You can wear it as a crossbody bag, around the waist as a bum bag, and you can even clip the bag to the loops on your jeans.
It's quite roomy, and has a quirky new 2in1 zip technique.
If you don't have a dog to walk, you can easily omit the little eyelet, and use the front pocket for your own treats.

Such irony here. I was dreaming up this type of pattern for myself and I wake up this morning to this wonderful video. You’ve made it so easy again. Thank you and keep on making these great video tutorials. You’re a natural.
Thanks Myra. We must have been having the same dream😀
Christine and zippers :do as I say, not as I do. Great project!
Thanks Sandi. 😄
Thank you Christine for this wonderful video, I will try to make your multi purpose cross body bag. Looking forward to your next video. Cheers Barb
You're very welcome Barb. Thank you😁
Love your bag, and your model! Thank you for a great tutorial.
Thanks Loraine. She works cheap too🤣🐕
Update… I’ve made 3 of these! I did make one out of old denim but my machine didn’t like the thicker fabric. So i made 1 out of college fabric on the front pocket and chambray, and 1 out of Houston Astros fabric on the front pocket with matching quilting cotton. I leave off the poo bag side. I LOVE these bags!! Thanks, Christine!!❤
I think I should make these as regular bags too😁
🎉 simply wonderful
Thanks Yvonna 😁
Really enjoyed your video Christine! The first bag i made i followed your instructions but did not do the grommet for the poo bags. The next one i added credit card slots. It worked perfectly. Definitely sewing more. Thank you again for a great video and project!❤️❤️
That's wonderful Amber, and a great idea for the card slots😀
A great looking well made bag as always - I'm sure it will be a good seller for you
Thanks Leslie. I sure hope so🙂
Thanks for sharing. Hope your well.
You're welcome Karen. Excellent here Thank you😀
Lovely bag.
Glad you like it Gigi. Thank you 😀
christine i just wanted to say thank you for another wonderful tutorial you explain things beautifully and i really look forward to the notification that you have put out another video thank you for all your hard work please keep posting xx
Thank you so much Gilly 😊
Thank you so much Christine for another very useful and versatile bag. Using the double zipper pulls is a clever idea and the warning to not have them too close to avoid the zipper gapping is invaluable. This is another of your projects being added to my list of ' must dos'.
Thanks Jess. It's a fun little bag😀
❤ great ideas
Thanks Sheila😁
Oh Christine you are so clever, you have such fantastic ideas! I just love your dog walking bag.
Thank you so very much for sharing, you instructions are always clear and conscise! So glad I found your site!
Regards Helen 😘
Thanks so much Helen😀
Fanny packs! Yay’
haha, glad you like them😀
Hi Christine. Thank you so much for sharing another brilliant project. You are amazing, and so is your baby girl. Take care xxx
Thanks Sharon. Coco is a delight 😊
Love this bag..this is perfect to fit my phone and 🐕 bits. Thanks Christine
Thanks Janet. It was a pleasure making this😀
I love those!
Thanks Dannie😁
What a great idea. A good thing to carry with us when we go to dog school. You are so very clever. Appreciate your talent.
Thanks Pat 😁
I love love love this bag. I want to make one soon for my son who's going away.. Christine, you are amazing!! Thank you! 💜😁
Thanks Laural. I'm sure your sone will love it😀
I am 100% going to make this out of old jeans! I have so much denim that I’ve harvested. Time to put it to use!!❤🎉
That sounds like a fabulous idea😁
Thanks Christine. Perfect weekend project for my 2 huskies
Might need to use the bigger pocket for those Husky treats Fran.😁
Another of your genius ideas! Love the versatility of this little bag.
Thanks Ramona 😁
I made several of these for a sale I was having with two other ladies. I love the size and functionality and made one for myself as well and I use it everyday when walking my dog. I did not sell any of them! I was really surprised and bummed…😢
This happens to me all the time Mary. When I make something I think will be a great seller, I find it is often just the opposite. Sometimes it just takes time to get the right customer. They will come eventually😁
This is one I would really like to try to make. Thank you so much for the tutorial. I have learned so much and I look forward to your videos. :)
You're very welcome Rebecca. Thank you😀
Yet again another great project, making this one soon, get ready for the Westie walk this coming weekend, they will all love saying Hello and the pooh bag holders, shame I will miss this one.
Thanks Faye. This will be perfect for those larger walks😀
Love this!
Thanks Karla 😁
Thank you so much for this bag it’s awesome,my granddaughter wanted one to go on a belt for her phone, this is perfect.Seeing you put a ring eyelet for the doggie bags ,I am going to put one on the large pocket so she can put her head phone’s for the phone though it as she listens to music on her phone.Thank you so much,it’s a brilliant idea.
I love the idea of putting the headphones through the eyelet Eve. 😀
Thanks for another great project x x x
Thank you Angi 😀
This was such a fun and easy project to make! Thank you for sharing your talents and creativity with us!
You're very welcome Mary😁
Thank you for sharing and showing how to make the bag. There are so many situations where this bag would be so versatile. It would be brilliant to wear on your jeans, and then you don't need to worry about someone pick pocketing. It would also be great to wear on the jeans if you have a small child and stroller ,so you don't need to be alert when you are otherwise occupied.
I love them.
😊
Thanks Sandra. You're giving me even more ideas for the bags now😀
Love them, 👌 thanks for sharing 😘
Thanks Shirley 😁
What a cute little bag.
Thank you😁
I will definitely be making these! Thank you 😊
Happy sewing Lynden😀
Thank you
You're very welcome Cynthia 😀
I love your tutorials. Thanks again for posting such great info.
You're very welcome Janice 😀
Great design idea 😁 thank you for sharing.
You're welcome Ann. Thank you 😀
You do a great job of showing us how to. Thank you.
Thank you Joy 😊
Hello. After watching this video the first time I had myself almost convinced that I didn't need to add this to the long list of your projects that I need to do. Then I watched it the second time and I am now waiting for the hardware to come in, I was running low. You did it to me again, Christine.😄😃
haha, that's so funny Judi. Another viewer also suggested the eyelet would be great for putting ear phone cords through the hole😁
Love your idea, clever girl! Going to make a few for friends and me too! Thanks for sharing!
It was a pleasure Debbie😀
I love this bag too! Brilliant where you put the clips to make it more versatile! Your videos are so good with clear instructions! Thanks! jw
Thank you so much!😀
Fabulous idea, just what I need. Off to make one right now. As usual great, clear instructions. Thankyou 😊
Happy sewing Sharon 😀
I just love your videos I have a lot of different types of channels that I watch ( I don't watch reg tv) but every time I watch your videos I always feel the need to like them :) I think UA-cam needs a love button. You do such a good job at explaining & you are so kind. Oh & I wanted to tell you I got my first box of upholstery fabric from a furniture shop a month or so ago & now they just called me & said they have some more :) I haven't gotten to get sewing anything ( although I am going to try to get a few done for them @ the shop before I go. Just been very busy with Grandbabies & things :) Thanks Again for all you do :)
That's awesome Kimberly. You're going to be inundated soon😀
Love this bag and your variation! This is my next make to modify my Buddy bag that I designed for Sallie Tomato. Thank you for your talent
You're very welcome Jennifer😀
Just what I wanted to make , thank you
You're very welcome😀

Thank you so much Melinda😀
Wow fantastic, I could use it for my keys of my job as I have a lot to carry around and to put my ID and drivers licence, so I don't have to have a chunky bag while I am working which gets in the way all the time. Thanks for sharing 😊
Sounds like this will be perfect Giovanna😀
Such a great idea. I have made a messenger bag and use it for dog walking. I love the size of yours. I also made a bag to attach to the bag to carry full bags of poop, as I have problems carrying anything for too long.
Hmm, I might need to design a little carry bag for the full bags to be attached to as well😀
Great project! Someday I would love to see how you make the, little boxes to attach the handles. Mine are always such a mess.
Thanks Jennifer. Do you mean the boxed stitching on the ends of handles?😀
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs yes at attachment. Often the stitching looks like a boxed X. Despite all efforts mine end up being very wonky ...
Love this bag. I made it but my zipper sunk in at the ends. I must have lined it up wrong. Thanks for the great videos
It still happens to me too sometimes Greg. Perhaps the tabs weren't wide enough?😁
🙂🙂🙂🙂😍😍😍💗💗💗💗
Thanks Joy 😊
what a really cute doggy walking bag i love the hello kitty fabric but im going to try it with doggy fabric i use my fanny pack when walking my dog but i love the idea of having the poop bags come out of the hole thanks for your video youre very creative n give clear
instructions btw i always forget to leave the zippers open also n it drives me nuts
I remember when doing this video, I mentioned three times not to forget about the zipper, yet I still managed to ignore my own advice😁
Christine could you do a tutorial with a doggie pouch but in a Fanny pack style?
I've added it to the list Laurie😀
Love, love, love this bag! I’ll definitely be adding it to my list of things to make. Can’t wait to see some you’ve made with the upholstery fabric, will you line those?
Also love that you’ve used my idea of putting the swivel clips directly on the bag.😉 Cathy from Nevada, USA
Thanks Cathy. Yes, I'll be lining the next batch 😀
I like to carry a water bottle as well, for which I have a "bag". I include a pb jar lid for my dog. She's a tiny thing, so that's enough. But definitely need to carry water for both of us.
Our Coco, just loves peanut butter too😀
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs LOL. I should clarify--if it matters. The pb jar lid is my girl's water bowl when out walking. I've never tried her with pb itself. Maybe I should! Some peanut butters have an additive that is bad for dogs--I'll have to figure that one out.
@@Loruca haha. That's actually a brilliant idea.
Coco has learnt to drink from my water bottle like a dripping tap. I loosen the lid and let the water trickle out😄
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs It works for Lulu, who is only seven pounds. I bought a thermos that came with an insulated carrier, put a smaller water bottle in the carrier, which left space for the lid.
I’m about to give this a go today. I actually got a polyurethane fabric off the clearance table at Lincraft on Friday ($2.50 per metre!!), so that’s what I’m going to use as the lining so if treats are a bit messy it won’t affect the rest of the bag!
That sounds like a great idea Mel. I hope they turned out well😀
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs thanks 😊 I tried using outdoor canvas instead (it’s what I use on the bottom of the dog beds and the top fabric for the winter coats I make). 1st bag hasn’t turned out as good as I hoped, but I am teaching myself everything at 50! Hopefully the next one will come together more evenly and I will be happy with it coz I already have a standing order from 1 for a gorgeous lady who is +size and can’t find a waist treat pouch to fit her. Thank you for your amazing, easy to follow videos, I’m loving learning from you. The 1st project I did was the poo pouches and have actually had some ladies buy them from me at the market for dirty nappies, works just as well and is a lot smaller to carry around than nappy sacks 😊
I eagerly await some more doggy inspired projects 💜🐾💜🐾
Thanks Mel. I'm really pleased your selling some of these items. I'd love to make more doggy things, but not sure what else I shoul make for our spoilt girl. Must give it some thought😀
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs The 2nd one turned out better 😂 I made the loops for the swivel clips longer and it does look and sit better for +size people.
I know what you mean about spoilt fur kids, I have 4 cats and 3 dogs and that’s how I started selling things for pets, I keep making too much 🤣🤣 I started by making some collars for my rescue husky and the rest is history 🤣
I've been looking for that waistband Interfacing for a while! None of the younger salespeople know what I'm talking about 😡
I recently reordered some from my supplier, and couldn't believe how poor the quality was. Thankfully I managed to find some better quality. Not sure which stores have it though😀
Definitely couldn’t advertise them as fanny packs in uk! It has a completely different meaning 😂
It's the same here Lynden. Quite derogatory. I don't think I've even heard the term used since the 70's/80's 🤣
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs ha ha! 😂
$40 AU is only $25 US. That’s quite a bargain. 😊
Thank you. It took a while, bit it finally sold😁
Hi Christine. Every time I go to make a strap, I have to come back here and watch how to do it. Would it be possible for you to add to your short collection a video on just the strap making?
Thanks much, Cathy from Nevada
I haven't forgotten this Cathy, just struggling to find the time. I'll try to get to it soon😁
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs thanks Christine. I know you've been VERY buddy with videos.😉 Love it.😍
Thank you Christine. Would it be possible to do a video in witch you explain different type of stabilizer and witch ones are good to have in your stash please? I have none and when I look online, there are different kinds with a big range in prices (here that kind of thing is quit expensive I found)
Yes Katrien. I'm hoping one of my suppliers will give me some samples to create the vido😀
These are great! What grommet setter do you use?
This is the type I use. It was purchase from Ebay a couple of years ago 😁
Manual Press Grommet Eyelet Hole Punch Machine + 3 Dies and 1500Pcs Grommets Kit
Love the Bag, but I couldn't follow the fast-paced tutorial. Try to stop video and repeat, but UA-cam shows so many commercials in between, I got frustrated. Have to try it later.
many
Thanks Doris. Not sure how they work out the commercials, but they can certainly be a pain😀
Excellent project!! I love how you can laugh at your oopsies! So much fun to watch! Will give this one a go after my cataract surgeries this summer😜. Is this your new sewing room? 🌸💜🌷😜
Yes, it's my new room Tina, though I have my eye on the rest of the house too🤣🤣
Hope your surgery goes well for you
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs Haha! That’s hysterical! Thank you for the laughs! Can’t wait to get my eyes cleaned up because I can’t see to thread my needles!! My son says he’s going to take my car keys pretty soon- if I could run I’d be OUTTA HERE!! Pfft! Have a wonderful day my friend 😜😎💜🌸🍄
@tina vernon I remember as a child laughing at mum because she couldn't thread the needle. (yes, I was that wicked child).
Each time I struggle now, I think how lucky I am that my kids aren't watching me go through it too😆
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs So you have kids? I have one son. He’s the very best I could have ever hoped for. He calls every morning on his way to work and sings our good morning ditty😜 He does tease me mercilessly though! But that’s okay. I am truly blessed with him in my life💜 Life would be so darn boring without him that’s for sure😉
Yes Tina, I have twin boys. They'll be 30 this year. They're like chalk & cheese. I couldn't imaging a life without mine either😊
I don’t have Pellon. What would be better in its place, fusible fleece, woven heavy weight interfacing or non woven heavy interfacing? I’m looking forward to making this one!
Leigh, it'll depend on the fabric you're using. If cotton, then you can use any kind of batting or fleece. Pelon, Peltex, wadding, decovil, even blanketing or flanelette would work😊
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs I’ll use quilting cotton, so fusible fleece would be good then? I wasn’t sure if it would be a little too thick
@leighhansen738 it'll still work Leigh. You may just need to be more careful if it's too thick. Most fusible products are good to work with though😊
Hi Christine. I love this tutorial but I am struggling with the strap. My daughter is 55ins around her waist one and a half times, which is great as the bum bag option but too short for the crossbody. Is it possible to have two sliders on the bag so that it can be adjusted on both sides? I have played with this and cannot see a way so would love to hear your view.
I'm not sure that it would work Liz, as you'd still need to put the excess strap somewhere. I wonder if making a clip-on extension might work somehow😁
Hi Christine, I have read on one of you post but now I can’t find it that post/comment. What size continuous zippers to do normally use #3 or #5 for your sewing.
Hi Julie, I usually use no.5 zips 😊
Thank you
I've been wanting a dog walking bag like this. My hardware is 1" and my webbing is 3/4".....would these sizes work together for a bum bag or should I get the correct sizes?
I would use what I had available Paula. It'll be just fine 🙂
When you said the measurements of the prices did you include seam allowance?
Yes it does. 😄
Do you know if upholstery fabrics are machine washable? I worry that some treats may get messy inside that pocket.
Cathy, whilst I don't wash my small bags, I do regularly wash my supermarket shopping bags made with upholstery fabric. They still look as good as new after about 4 years. I think I've even put them in the dryer😀
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs good to know. Thanks!
I believe you said to measure 1 1/2x the waist measurement for the fanny pack style. If the crossbody strap measures 70", could that not also double as a fanny pack strap? In other words, at 70" it could be used both ways for the average person?
Hi Cherie. The longer strap ends up too loose around the waist as you have almost 10inches extra due to bag around waist as well. I had to cut it down a bit. 😀
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs Thanks. I was hoping to come up with a strap for a dual purpose, but alas, I'm foiled again.
@@cherieemmons6833 what about an extension strap behind the bag connected by a clip? Or perhaps just make it a smaller shoulder strap.
On the other hand, if you're as "cuddly" as I am, you can keep the strap long 😄
Christine, when is the bottom and 4" lining of the 'treat' pouch closed. I finished the job, boxed corners and everything, only to see the raw edge of the main fabric showing inside the bottom of the pocket!? Have I missed something? 🤔
PS I did remember to open the zip! 😂
Diane, the bottom should all line up together. You can sew treat pouch to main fabric, then sew closed as normal. Hope that makes sense.
I'm glad you remembered to open the zip 😄
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs
Sorry but no, I'm still not sure. Can you tell me whereabouts in the video or transcript I can find it and I'll take another look. Thanks 😊
Diane, at 14.20 in the video, you will put the layers together. When I sew the front pieces at the machine a little further on (I'm closing the middle section of the front zip), you will see I'm also stitching the top, sides, and bottom layers together at 15.24 😁
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs
Thankyou ever so much for taking the time and trouble to answer my queries and point me in the right direction. I'll take a look later (it's too early yet!!) and let you know how I get on.
Apart from this glitch, the bag was a fairly easy make and looks great but I think I'll have to take it apart to correct. 🙄 x
@@dianemerrett3774 let me know how you go😊
Your sewing machine is so quiet!!
It sure is. I just love it!😀
No need for dog at the end
Mary, many of my regular subscribers often ask after Coco 😀
Awesome project, i really love your videos. I'm going to give this a try tomorrow. I'm a guy so i might make it "tactical"(lol) with 500d/1000d cordora! Should be fun.. Thanks for sharing. Be well, all the best to ya.
Thanks Rob. I think that will be a great "blokey" fabric to use😀
