I wish Islands would have a big sit-down show in Hogsmead to take some of the pressure off of Hagrids. A 20-minute magic show where characters demonstrate different spells in person, maybe ending with a duel, would be great if they can get the special effects right.

I think they should really replace Flight of the Hippogriff with a Wizarding World show. It just has such low capacity it doesn’t do anything for the land.

As a former cast member I can 100% confirm that shows are a benefit to any theme park. I made magic at the Millenium Falcon at Hollywood Studios and during the summer and early fall the night time rush was something that needed to be seen to be believed. The wait time could be at peak guest flow and still more and more people would keep arriving. Without the Indiana Jones show the last 2 and a half hours of operations would be full of thousands of people who wanted to get as many rides in as they could. When Fantasmic reopened it made all the wait times across the park drop and it stayed that way even during the holiday rush. It was almost unreal seeing how low the wait time would be and how empty the attraction would feel.
Shows are part of the reason that all the rides at SeaWorld Orlando mostly have waits below 30 minutes so, shows could reduce wait times by a decent amount at IOA.
Seaworld has no wait times because they have no one at the park lol. They have a really hard time bringing people in despite having some amazing coasters.

I think you're spot-on with the fact that Parks need shows for people who push themselves. Attending a show when you need a break is a great way to not feel like you're wasting your time in a theme park. I feel like I can sit on my butt at home, a lot of the time I'll even eat my food walking. We get a limited amount of time in the park. So I try to maximize the fun to the point it's almost work. A show makes me take time to relax and be entertained instead of rushing around.
For me, The big problem holding back IOA is the neglect of lands like Toon Lagoon and Seuss Landing. Sure they’re not as big of a drive as Jurassic Park, Harry Potter and most newer additions, but they hold a lot of Potential. Unversial should use some of the Epic Universe profits for areas like those

Marvel is probably the most neglected as they can’t really improve it due to Disney having to approve most changes made to the land.

I think the lack of a proper nighttime show holds the park back too. They have this beautiful lagoon where they could have a central nighttime show, but instead its shoreline is taken by a host of rides, buildings, and propping.

I love Skull Island. But they should have the Walking with Dinosaur show or the Jurassic World Live Tour show instead.

Hard agree on this. The Islands is definitely my favorite Florida park, and even though I love the ride and attraction lineup, it can definitely use at the very least two theater shows. Hell I'd be happy if they just brought in a revival of Pandemonium Cartoon Circus, or especially Waterworld

I think Universal should bring Dune into the IOA where the lost continent is right now they wouldn't even have to change the land that much, I know people want Zelda but Dune is probably the next big movie franchise. Imagine a show about arena dueling👀

It isn't just live entertainment. It's also lacking in slow moving dark rides that Disney became famous for. These rides help people decompress and make for a better overall experience. Universal has never really gotten the point of a "dark ride" and just try to inject it with screens and action all the time
At least Epic will have two theatre shows on opening day.

This is a very obvious problem at IOA, but I'm glad you called it out anyway. The abandoned theaters are sad and annoying, and always make me feel as though I'm being cheated a little. The ticket prices are partly based on entertainment features that no longer exist. Full-fledged sit-down shows are vital for absorbing park crowds and giving guests a chance to rest.
One thing that should happen as well is a major remake of Seuss Landing. It needs a new coat of paint, remake the Cat in the Hat ride with new companies and give the characters new costumes, they’re so old that they are falling apart with loose threads on some of them. Only Lorax has had a new costume and he stands out compared to the other costumes from 1999, even having the Illumination Grinch would be an improvement It’s sad that the area for kids are ignored compared to other areas
The thing is, all of Universal’s resources are currently tied to Epic Universe’s budget. It’s going to be a while until the budget will allocate to Islands for bigger projects there.
And they simply don't need to. Everyone going to Epic when it opens is also going to stop by IoA, so there's no reason to add anything there at this point in time.
Eighth voyage of Sinbad and the Wild West stunt show used to be favorites of mine . Funny a d entertainment, and yes time to rest and such too.

I can name a few issues that are putting Islands of Adventure off a bit. The update for the Dr. Seuss land, maybe an update on their Toon Lagoon and their overall plan for the future of the Marvel land.
They should 100% keep the Marvel comics IP, but they can modernize it a little bit. Same bright colors and designs, just less campy and more realistic (not too realistic, but realistic enough).
Yeah, Universal should really take advantage of the fact that Disney hasn't touched the comics side of Marvel with their parks.

@@sonicspeed4238I don’t know if they’re allowed to do that. I saw somewhere that there was some sort of agreement that they can’t use any of the comic book characters shown in IOA, but that wouldn’t make much sense considering Spider-Man plays a pretty big role in both parks. I guess you could say that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is pretty much his own character due to how vastly different he is from his comic book counterpart.
I knew it! Shows is their #1 issue since they don't have any atm! Shows will help the crowd levels. I hope in the future they fix that issue!
I think the "crusade" on shows is explained by them wanting to cut staffing costs. All your examples make it clear how these shows require so many people on stage, that doesn't even include whoever's doing the lighting, makeup, etc, etc.
From the business perspective I see the issue. A theater's seating space usually holds less people than a ride queue. A ride needs less staff to operate plus they don't need expensive costumes, props, etc. If you're trying to maximize how many guests you can "engage" using a certain number of staff, then the ride clearly wins. Unfortunately that "engagement" in this case means waiting in line.

However I'd argue another thing that others are pointing out as well, and that is: Neglecting their older attractions and lands.
This is an area where they need to take a note from Disney who consistently updates their older attractions to keep them relevant, functional, and entertaining.
Take the Cat in the Hat ride for example. That ride looks ROUGH. EVERYONE agrees. But Cat in the Hat is still an icon, and if that ride simply got a facelift and some new programming and such, it could hold a candle to the other rides in the park but for now it's a sad shell of a great ride that just didn't get the budget or technology it needed to shine and it looks as though it won't be getting the help it needs.
Yeah I hope they don't fall into complacency with lands like Seuss landing. Marvel, Seuss and Toon Lagoon at their cores are nice balanced theme park lands but none of them have received any true additions since the mid-2000's, not including the upgrading of Spidey and Hulk. People like to scoff at the Waterworld idea but that's a show I think would fit perfectly at islands in light of Poseidon's and sinbad closing.
No one is talking about this but the last 3 times I went on Jurassic Park River Adventure it has looked ROUGH. The animatronics look like they're from a Six Flags or something
I have never been a theme park show person, but I just saw my first one this past weekend at Universal Studios Hollywood. It was the Waterworld Stunt Show and it completely changed my mind about theme park shows. It was as good as an attraction, and it was so easy to see how it drew crowds, which meant ride queues were freeing up. The key to shows is to make them actually really good so people see them as just as vital to a park day as the rides
I feel like if universal does merge with Warner.
This will be the perfect park to have massive renovations.
Marvel to DC, toon lagoon to looney toons lagoon.
Maybe a different brand replacing the auditorium.

I think the MonsterVerse theme would be good as a solo ride, or a mini land. It could be similar to Smuggler’s Run (the Millenium Falcon ride) but better in every aspect. I remember the HEAV vehicles, they would work perfectly for a Hollow Earth tour attraction.

Oh I'd be all for that! I only learned recently there used to be a fireworks show in the lagoon during the park's early years. Adventure in the Sky, I believe? Apparently that one track from the park's album, The Adventure Lives On, was made for the show
I’m thinking a Jaws themed show, that would be a great way to pay homage to the old Jaws boat ride!
One time I walked toward that theater by Poseidon's Fury and quite literally nobody was there. I was certain I had walked into a backstage area until I saw all the seats. Had to do some on-site research since I was so confused.
Also not to mention to if u have a indoor show hell even a outdoor show especially in fl. If u add a small snack stand it be a good slice of revenue like soda water pop corn, pretzel etc
I think they need a MonsterVerse attraction. It could be a Monarch outpost where they offer guests a tour of the Hollow Earth. The ride will be themed to the HEAV vehicles shown in Godzilla Vs. Kong, and it would be similar to both the Millenium Falcon Smuggler’s Run, and Avatar Flight Passage. I picture a screen based attraction (I know, I know, brandish your pitchforks) but with a drop tower system, that way you can get that intense feeling of traveling down into the Hollow Earth. My other idea is getting rid of the Skull Island attraction, and replacing it with a Jurassic Park/World ride. As for Skull Island, I think it should get an entire land in Epic Universe as a future expansion.
For the shows, I have quite an insane idea that I don’t even think would be possible, but a massive mosasaurus puppet/animatronic on the water would be awesome, and if they can do that they can also do the same thing but with Bruce (the shark from Jaws).
A monsterverse HEAV ride would be fantastic

I think you kinda hit the nail on the head as to why there is NOT more shows at IOA in the fact it does keep the lines longer, and think of how much money Universal makes off of upsells for avoiding those lines.

Universal had a lot of waisted space between both parks.
IOA also is in need of some major updates.
There is also the area between IOA and Studios. Since Nickelodeon closed, all of that property is just sitting empty. I don’t think they are using the production studios anymore. They could bulldoze all of that and make a new area for IOA or Studios.
But, live shows cost money, and a permanent show is something they probably don’t want to invest in.

This was such a great video! I was just wondering why all these stages sat abandoned at the parks on both sides. While Universal Studios still has a view street shows, their stage ones have mostly been retired too. I think Animal Actors was the last one. Now both parks are missing stage shows. I for one did see the Sinbad show back in the day and it was fine. Got me off my feet.
Now what i have suggested elsewhere is to expand Marvel Superhero Island and add a Capt America stunt show with Ironman, the X-Men etc. They have rights to do that as long as they use the comic book versions that are approved already. A superhero stunt show I think might be a hit.

The best water ride collection ever assembled was Pirates + Splash Mountain + Small World
Regardless of how much one dislikes Disney, nobody can't deny that TECHNICALLY and OBJECTIVELLY those 3 are way more advanced than JPRA + Ripsaw Falls + Barges
And if we decide not to count Small World, we still have the Matterhorn in Disneyland (which had that same Pirates + SM deck in its hands) which gives you a slight refresh at the end
And some family and friends might be limited to G forces (oddly, many times its the spinning). So as you want to share fun with others, you have to tell some of them there is more to do than 3 street shows lasting tens of minutes.
I 100% agree with you. I LOVE all the rides there, but the park is SEVERELY lacking in shows. You add a few solid big shows and a parade, and this park is top tier with very few flaws.
Slower entertainment that can swallow up huge numbers of guests for long periods of time and that keeps those guests out of lines is underrated by most American theme parks these days. Not only shows, but exhibits. So much of a priority is placed on thrill rides that last less than 5 minutes which might generate queues hours long; however, they often replace shows, walk-throughs, and gentler rides that entertained guests for longer periods of time, ensuring that less of their trip was spent on queuing downtime.
Islands of Adventure gets less flack for it than Disney parks (namingly Epcot) because it opened in a state that prioritized thrill rides over other offerings, but it's still a problem that cheapens the experience. If I'm facing 90+ minute waits for most of the best rides during most of the day, I'd hope there'd still be enough entertainment to fill my time beyond shopping, eating, or waiting in one of those queues.
It's so much worse if you think about the fact that it's probably because they don't want to pay actors, and encouraging guests to shop and/or eat whenever they aren't on rides is far more profitable than providing free entertainment
Honestly they need to do more with jurrasic park and upgrade stuff but a dinasour sit down show would be awesome
Considering the new Twister movie, I'd love to see that make a comeback in some way in the Toon Lagoon theater. A full scale refurb of Seuss Landing, revamp of Cat, and possible "Whoville" expansion behind 1 fish 2 fish with the Mt. Crumpit Grinch ride. Universal promised 17 billion to the Orlando marker after UEU, so there's no reason why this wouldn't be on the table.

I 100% agree with you regarding how they should add more shows into IOA. My ideas would be to bring back Pandemonium Cartoon Circus in some form to Toon Lagoon’s theater, with brand new acts and new characters both old and more recognizable in cartoons and comics besides Betty Boop, Rocky and Bullwinkle, and Popeye. Perhaps even a stunt show themed to Marvel would be a good idea!

The main problem is that COVID-19 killed a lot of the sit down shows in theme parks.And also most of the performers are union.

Funny you just posted this I just left IOA yesterday. Hadn’t been to the park in 8 years and boy do they have some work to do after epic universe opens.
They need to completely overhaul the toon section as well as the Seuss lands. They have too many valuable IP to leave these in the parks. It’s a disservice to both lands when the attractions are so dated. There’s a lot of rides/lands they must get to after the new gate opens

IOA is turning into an amusement park instead of a theme park. They got rid of the character / greeters at the front of the park, now too.
It's insane that Spider man is still "the best simulator ride" (I agree), it was like the first one and nobody ever topped it😭

a sit down show and a high quality kid attraction in islands of adventure would make it a big package. it will have everything that everyone likes and will make ioa a better park, it already is a fantastic park tho but itll make it better
Remember shows take up time and reduce wait times they are essential to keep maximum occupancy while making sure it’s not crowded
I think the biggest thing it needs is a refurb for Forbidden Journey. Seriously, that could be an S-tier dark ride but the old and blurry screens bring it down a couple tiers and it’s tragic. 😭
It clears up ride lines/food and merch lines, gives you an activity and a break at the same time, and WaterWorld in Orlando is free money
Seems like you would be a great data analyst or project manager for universal studios, what you might not see is the analytical value this brings to universal. This would be your resume!

I think this is more of a trend in the amusement park industry rather than just Universal. From the coaster wars winding down we saw Six Flags hit bankruptcy and significantly cut down on costs anywhere they could and they were more concerned about selling food/merch at parks than they were about putting quality into parks. I imagine the shows cost a ton of money to cast. Also it's probably difficult in these days to sign music acts to stay at 1 location for 5 months where they otherwise could be touring. It's just unfortunately something that seems to have faded away but is really missed. I'm not interested in much animal stuff because I think it sucks for the animals but I used to love the diving show at my local park and then it was removed during the 2010s.
These days parks are trying to be more family destinations again so maybe shows will make a comeback at parks and universal has so many license opportunities it would seem they could make some killer shows for kids and adults...
Universal should take the final room of Poseidon's Fury, and convert it to a proper full length stage show. They could gut the water tunnel and treasure room to make room for seating, and still use the first room as some kind of preshow to make it a full experience. Having a 30 minute show right down the road from Hagrid's could really help lower it's ridiculous wait times.
Agreed on all points! Pointless to have so much dead space in IOA. And, a stage show doesn’t require as much tech like Poseidon’s Fury needed.
Waterworld in Universal Hollywood is simply the BEST theme park show I have EVER watched. Which is funny considering that not too many people cares or likes the movie, but the show is just AMAZING. I would be in ecstasy if they decided to bring it to Florida, but that is, unfortunately, very unlikely.
I took extended family to IoA for the first time and this was the prime complaint from the older folks especially

In USF, I love that there's the Bourne Stuntacular and the Hollywood Makeup show still, but it does still feel a bit slim. In terms of IOA, in addition to the severe lack of shows, I'd say there's a lack of rides that can operate in lightning/thunder conditions - which is a very common occurrence in Central Florida.
Personally, I think Toon Lagoon could use a facelift. Not sure how things stand, legally, with Nickelodeon (or, the IP's within).... But I think refurbishing the land to be a celebration of animation as a whole would be great. Seuss is a mess in just about every way, not sure what can be done with it.
Pikmin Is Better
Shows and Some attractions such as people movers are what I call foot resters. managing when you do your foot resters are very important in mastering and maximizing your park experience. If you can do all the foot resters during the peak time in the early afternoon you get a pretty lengthy break off your feet and in some cases AC. It's how you go all day in the parks when you are at a resort for multiple days. People who go back to the hotel in the middle of the day are just people who don't know how to manage foot resters. That or they have very young children which I can't relate to as I don't have kids and if I did I would not bring them to a park till they are old enough to walk everywhere on there own and be physically and mentally stable enough to manage the day.
I was about to comment my opinion and then you took the words out of my mouth- IOA is well balanced but after walking the park 5 times over, riding the same rides multiple times, and spending all our money on food and souvenirs, we still run out of things to do and feel like we’re missing out on something. A version of Seussical and a Harry Potter theater show seem like no brainers. Universal is notorious for having rides that are not accommodating to people of size or medical conditions. More theater shows would give more value to those folks and as you said, just more options for everyone.

I'm fine with Water World not being there, but IOA could absolutely take at least two shows. One Harry Potter show at the Sindbad stage and another one uhhh, somewhere for Jurassic Park. It would do wonders for the crowds there. A Potter show in particular would really help alleviate the burden of Hagrids and Hogsmeade. That's a really large theater space that's just sitting there doing nothing except acting as a morning overflow for Hagrids.

I dont think islands of adventure needs shows because... Universal Resorts are like a complete package in my opinion, they compliment each other and Studios had a lot of amazing shows but not a lot of quality rides... On the contrary Islands has a lot of quality rided but not a single show... Together they offer the full theme park experience and I think its the best theme park currently still operating!

So not the increasing number of rides and attractions that are constantly size restrictive that limits your guest satisfaction and limits a sizable American audience, overrated food (haven’t been since 2021, it could’ve improved, but for now, I’ll stand on this) or its massive dead zones where there are no attractions (Lost Continent, Toon Lagoon near Marvel Superhero Island), its shows. Idk. I agree they could use shows, but I’d rather see them build stuff for everyone to enjoy, including coasters and dark rides, without the constant size restrictions that make it hard for guests who are too round or too tall to be unable to ride like 1/2 the rides in that park. And that issue in particular is not just an Islands of Adventure problem, it’s a problem at all Universal parks. For as much as they’re hyping up Epic Universe, I have zero faith that it won’t have the same size issues we’ve seen. Mario Kart, a dark ride, has one in Hollywood. Basically any new coaster will universal builds. Every main Harry Potter ride that isn’t the Hogwarts Express has a size restriction. I think with 12 rides, meaning there will be little to do which will inflate queue times and these constant size restrictions, I think we may be overestimating the success of Epic before it even opens.
I agree the IoA needs more family things, I really don’t like intense coasters, and there were only like, 5 rides I could ride there. And I repeat, not BABY rides like Seuss landing, FAMILY rides, like Mario Kart challenge or another Harry Potter ride.
Theme park fans will do absolutely anything but lose weight.
Id love for them to add a flight of passage style ride. Maybe they could put it in the Poseidon’s fury building and theme it to the paraglider from legend of Zelda.

I feel the Toon Lagoon Theater, possibly a bit of that "comic strip" could be rebuilt into something else. Waterworld? while nice I doubt it since every other resort since Hollywood opened with it and at this point USO probably never will and if anything drives people to visit Hollywood. If they really wanted to add Water World though, they could retheme Toon Lagoon into the Sea of Stories with Waterworld the area around Toon Lagoon Theater), Popeye (which is already kind of its own miniland), and then retheme Dudley Do-Right to a more relevant water-based IP such as Spongebob or something else (basically everything else, although if there is a way to make up for loosing Comic Strip cafe in whole or part to make the Waterworld miniland a bit bigger, I'd take it)
