  • My Natural Hair Journey -
    Began August 2008
    BC January 2009
I wanted to post my journey because I took a lot of inspiration from the other movies I saw here on UA-cam..When I thought "I can't do this, I'm going to relax it," all I had to do was go online and see all the other stories, and know that what I am feeling is natural and I WILL get through this. So thank you to everyone who posts natural hair care/journey videos, you really do make a difference and inspire women like me who never knew they could make it this far and feel so free!

Wow, 2009 before it was a gig. When melanated girls were in the dark about our natural hair. Whitney was the perfect person to lead this journey. Woman, you bring so much to this community by being daring, caring, truthful and an excellent student and teacher. Your flourishing curls are a gift well placed. Thank you!

I'm sitting here shocked at the length of your hair now because I didn't know that you started with a big chop. I'm looking at your progress and I bet you didn't even know that your natural hair was this beautiful and could be this thick and full. Every time I visit a sisters channel about natural hair no matter what length different emotions well up inside of me. The power of suggestion is so powerful that the world and society had us believe that our crowns are not beautiful which is such b.s.. Our hair is so unique and special we should celebrate every time we see a sister sporting her natural crown. I'm not against a sister with a weave or a wig or a relaxer but I am sending a special shout-out to my natural sisters. Keep going look at the possibilities!!! We are all beautiful the way GOD made us!! Peace

I'm just like all the other ladies-shocked and still inspired. I've seen your hair mid-length and the luxurious long beautiful length that it is currently. But Whitney I look up to you all the more, because you've believed in your hair, and kept the faith. It's a struggle to break away from someone else's programming on how you should look and embracing your true self. You rank up there with the stars!

Thank you so much for making these natural hair videos!!!! I was a worried mom and have been looking for inspirational hair videos. My little girl is 9 years old and I refuse to start making her feel like her hair isn't pretty just the way it is!! She watched this video with me and got really excited! She hoped in the shower so I could help her detangle her hair and wants to do a hot oil treatment! I want her to be proud of who she is, exactly the way God made her and I appreciate the videos you make because they are an inspiration and great help to people of many different races and ethnicities!

Enjoyed looking back on your natural hair journey.. I must tell you how much you have inspired me! You are my hair crush!! LOL. I started going natural in May of 2012 because I noticed how thin my hair started getting after going to get my hair blown out at the Dominican Salons where I live.. loved the body and sheen but wasn't used to the thinning hair.. Once I decided to go natural.. I didn't know what to do with my hair until a co-worker of mine suggested UA-cam tutorials.. and I was HOOKED.
watching your channel has inspired me to keep my natural hair, because it hasn't been an easy journey.. at one point I was ready to give up. but now, I love my curls...learning about the different products and what works for my curl pattern..., now, I just have to learn how to manage my hair during the hot spring and summer months.

Here I am in 2020 scrolling through the archives trying to remind myself that you have to start from somewhere. But it doesn't matter where you start, as long as you JUST START! So thank you UA-cam algorithm (for dropping this video into my recommended section lol) and THANK YOU WHITNEY!! You inspired me to take the leap (big chop) in 2012, after about 3 months of transitioning, and I haven't looked back since!! Currently I've been looking to you as a shining example of what a successful business woman, mother, and resilience looks like in real life. You're so freaking amazing!! 💖💖💖

Hello! This is how much my husband to be loves my natural hair.We will be married next year in October. I'm looking now for some new natural hairstyles to wear for our big day. He prefers me to keep it natural as possible he loves the way it feels and smells. He loves the Shea butter creams I've made and use so much he uses it himself in his hair LOL. I watched you and now make my own organic hair products from your information link you've provided for anyone to try. I've also talked my daughter into going natural, She loves it and will never go back to the creamy crack LOL. Keep up with the knowledge of natural hair. I support what you do. I love your beautiful family, your daughter looks like the both of you. Love is so beautiful.
    Thank You

Thank you Whitney for sharing your experience.
That was me at 12-14. My mom began relaxing my hair. Then texturizers. At 14 I said Enough. There wasn't any advice on natural hair care so I was on my own. I grew it out, went through a lot of breakage, but never looked back (I wore extensions and lots of cornrows. That album was the one I was jamming to Freshmen year). 10 years later, still natural, and I'm so happy I found your channel! It has helped me better take care of my God-given curls that I love so much.
You're helping me reach hair goals I set years ago. Thank you thank you thank you!

I don't usually comment but I had to just take a minute to thank you for this video. I am transitioning and I have been watching a lot of videos (especially yours) and think, "how am I ever going to get to that point" because I feel like my hair is too short to do anything with at the moment and it's two textures so it's a bit wacky at the moment. Your video was a nice reminder that everyone starts somewhere and things will get better. I just have to take a deep breath and learn to love what I've got. :-) Thanks again!

I felt as if we were walking side by side in our natural hair journey as i would watch all of your tutorials and blog post. Since I decided to chop my hair off and relax it in a short pixie cut about two years ago. I am back watching this video again as I start to transition to be natural again! I've been following you since just under a year then subscribed somewhere shortly after. My hair was cut short for about the forth time because was making it fall out at the back. Now after transitioning for almost 3 years, I've just completed cutting my perm ends about 3 inches. So now that i'm determined to go natural for the 5th or 6th time, i'm going to start watching your videos from the start a free at a time. I have daughters to work on my hair, but I like having choices. I'll have questions now and then. You looked so nice during your school days. You don't look much older now, but still beautiful. Your guy have changed since then. Anyways, nice video.

I have been binge watching your channel because your hair looks just like minds (when I stop perming and chopping). I miss my hair so much. I tend to go through these phases of braids and weave. I love your videos and all your tips for natural hair. I just started watching your channel and I'm already a fan!! I love your natural hair story! I felt like I could really relate to it. I went natural last year around April, but it wasn't because I wanted to. I had long, silky hair and I loved having that straight hair look. What made me have to go natural was the damage I did to my hair with over heating it. I was flat ironing it too much and using it always at its highest level of 475. I ended up melting the cortex of most of my hair follicles , so my hair was falling out in chunks. My mom, grandmother, and beautician had helped me get started with going natural with tips and LOTS of support. After all the braiding and learning what my hair likes and dislikes (trust me there was a lot of times I ready to go get a perm back in) I finally can say that I love my healthy natural hair, coils, thickness, and all!

I like your honesty when you mentioned that you were a bit apprehensive when you first got it cut. The humor of the braid falling out kept it really down-to-earth :-D Thanks for sharing the beginning of your journey with us.
(btw, you hair has always been beautifully cared for, even when it was relaxed) Glad I'm not the only one who loves taking care of my hair.
Thanks Again, Keep the camera rolling chica.

Thank you sooo much!! I'm a natural newbie, and you have just inspired me to keep on doing me. We have family pics with my dad this weekend, and I was thinking about straigtening for one day because I didn't think I could do my hair nice enough for the photo. Well I'm going to work this natural twist out on Saturday with the sass I know how to bring. Thank you again for ALL you do to help us rock what we have, and don't forget to let us know when the little one gets here.

This video was so inspirational. I have followed you for quite some time now. You have become my inspiration for not puttng heat on my hair. My BC was 3/18/11. I do not plan to put heat in my hair until at LEAST 2014. I am seeing the difference and look forward to the future. Thank you for sharing.

you were inspired by many others, but you are so very inspiring yourself! I haven't relaxed in over a year but wear sew ins, and although i'm still not ready to show the world yet, I think I'm going to do a big chop to even up what I've started, as my have had thin parts from stress and pulling in the past, although it is growing very well now....keep doing what you are doing and inspire even more!

    Ok, Wait, wait, wait... what?!?!
I have never seen this video before either and I feel as if you posted it back up in a timely fashion.
I was inspired before but now ☆☆☆ I just feel like Luigi when he found the fiery flower and merged w/ it and had for that breif moment reached his maximum potential heading towards a whole new level ☆☆☆That is how this video made me feel. ♥☆♥☆
Secondly, Jajajajajaka look at Felipe w/ the long hair... ♡♡♡ it!
Lastly. I beleive you have satiated my need to see your hair straightend. Now I can close my eyes and imagine it doubled.
All in all, it was an awesome day... because you made my day.
    Thank you
    BESOS!!

So happy that you're filming again. I understand the difficulties of separation and eventually divorce, it's like a death of some sort. But from that death life emerges and you find out just how powerful you are, smart, time manager and all the things that you weren't sure you knew how to do. Don't be too hard on yourself things take time.

Sometimes, I get so wrapped up, I feel like I am right there! I say all of this to simply say thank you!

I remember watching this video last year. I had just cut all my hair off and I was in tears. Then I watched this and got the strength to keep my head up. Now I'm here watching again today. My 1 year napiversary was last month and my hair is not bra strap length. I do not think I would have made it this far without your inspiration. Thank you Whitney

Thank you for sharing. I am at my 6 month of transitioning trying to make it to May and then BC. I thank all natural hair and transitioning youtubers. I would not have a clue of what to do if not for you. I am still very nervous about this tremendous change and trying to imagine what it will look like, but I am also very excited and looking forward to it.
