'It hurts a lot, but we can be really proud' 😌 Murat Yakin ⚽ England 1-1 Switzerland (Pens 5-3)

- Reaction from head coach Murat Yakin at the Merkur Spiel-Arena in Dusseldorf on Saturday after his Switzerland side were knocked out of Euro 2024 by England at the quarter-final stage on penalties.
In a closely-fought match, Monaco forward Breel Embolo gave Switzerland the lead on 75 minutes, but Bukayo Saka of Arsenal equalised five minutes later and after the two teams could not be separated by extra time, it all came down to a shootout.
England went first and scored though Chelsea youngster Cole Palmer, then Switzerland's Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji saw his penalty saved by Jordan Pickford.
Yann Sommer could not prevent Jude Bellingham, Saka, Ivan Toney and Trent Alexander-Arnold from converting their spot kicks and England won 5-3.
It was hard on Switzerland, who have still to reach the semi-finals of a major tournament.
They exit the European Championship on penalties in the last eight for the second time in a row after losing to Spain in similar fashion three years ago.

A very good performance by the Swiss. Excellent tactics. Huge credit to Yakin. Very dignified in defeat. Wish him and Switzerland well going forwards.
Are they excellent tactics if they are countered with the same formation and not effective? Surely excellent tactics would be changing formation to counter like England did?
@@jamie-w6c They did counter England, or did you not notice the two substitutions that gave the Swiss the ascendancy mid-way through the second half and then the lead late in the game, and just how close they came to winning the game in the second period of extra time? England were hanging on.
“Excellent tactics” got the Swiss very, very close to winning. England, who arguably had the greater individual talents, were nullified and unable to beat a very effective Swiss team in 120 minutes.
Yes, the Swiss coach adopted excellent tactics that brought his side within a cross-bar of victory.
@@really8930 “Excellent tactics” got the Swiss very, very close against a team that's playing terrible. Yeh amazing team ahaha
@@jamie-w6c No, that’s the point. The Swiss are not an “amazing team”. That is precisely why the tactics meant that they could with compete with England and come very close to winning in regulation time. They exit the competition unbeaten by anyone, including the English and the Germans, who man for man have better players.
As for England playing “terribly”, true it hasn’t been exciting football BUT
- they finished top of their group
- have conceded just 3 goals
- are unbeaten
- are in the semi final and could yet win the Euros
The laugh’s on you, mate.
Switzerland had a good tournament
Well played to them👏👏unlucky not
to go through to the semi finals
No luck in penalties its a skill thats practised by the best teams . Switzerland had fewer shots and possesion than England .
This guy has great hair
He kissed Shakiri
Was a good game of football which unfortunately one team has to lose. When England went a goal down, I must admit, I thought they were finished.
As an England fan I stopped watching at that point, I have to admit. I heard Saka's goal from the other room.
Always capable of flashes of class the English
Penalties looked easy for England
A big thank you for Switzerland's impressive European Championship campaign! it was great!!! I hope Manuel Akanji can handle it, no Swiss, at least Akanji, deserves to bear this burden. Now we'll reach the semi-finals in 2026 ;)
Sebbene abbia perso, la squadra ha giocato molto bene… brava Svizzera! 👏👏
Schade 😢 sehr bitter Glücklicher Sieg von England ⚽️
@@user-sz4th4sm5l jy praat nouw nonsense
We England have been so poor this tournament I was convinced we’d get beaten by the Swiss we are blagging it imo and have been lucky I’m starting to think that sometimes you are destined for glory.
It's literally fated for England to win this Euros.
@@ThomasCrompton-mq1ft jst like portugal in 2016 they played avg bt won at last
@@prans_bas yeah, if we shit-play our way to the Trophy, we'll take it!
Good game Swisse.
THE WAY SWITZERLAND CAME IN THEY WERE THE DARK HORSES IMPRESSED THEY MADE IT THAT FAR.🔥.
"Saka, we controlled him" 😂
Coach of the tournament perhaps
Penalty shootouts are definitely not down to luck!!! Look at Argentina 😮
The Swiss were not better or in control. The had a bright period in the 2nd half the rest of the time they were chasing the ball. The also were not defending saka effectively as he got past to the byline line numerous times 🙄
Spot on..They played badly for 65 mins..
Agreed Saka giving the fb a torrid time
pens are not luck. Englands pen takers are way better. They'd win 9/10 pen shootouts against the swiss. Pickford done his research on where they shoot also
Most goalkeepers do research. Some idiots have the audacity to call it cheating when Switzerland would have most definitely been watching how Kane and Foden take penalties lol.
The fact he thinks penalties are down to luck is why Switzerland are going home.
Yeah they looked very inferior in the shootout tbh
England players stepping up were never gonna miss
Swiss lucky to end game without a man short
No way the fb was controlling Saka
For the most part, England in this tournament have been extremely bornung.
Same for pretty much every team i think the defensive strength of most nations has made it difficult to watch
Yeah. Very bornung indeed. By the way, WTF does bornung mean?
@@bobwilson2357German for boring 😅😅😅
@@urbanpulsewalks LOL. Boring but in the semi final 🤣
And yet, England have scored 3 of the best goals in the tournament.
Murat bey good luck,,👏👏👏⚽️⚽️⚽️🌎🫡
Ask Kyle Walker about ikanjes penalty ….
I thought
Switzerland were brilliant, they played much better than England, penalties are brutal
Seriously?
No way, England controlled the game most of the time...didn't create much but we played in the Swiss half apart from a period in the 2nd half. England went behind and stepped up a couple of gears
Zero knowledge. Or just bitter?
We dominated the game
Switzerland were much better than England? I don't know what game you were watching but the stats don't back that claim up.
you did well you certainly didn't disappoint Switzerland , don't let a missed penalty get you down, especially as the English cheated, the mistake was to let a late lead slip like against Germany, there's room for improvement here for the team
Cheated? How so?
@@Onecanvandamme the keeper and his bottle, he tried to hide
@christofbernhart503 What rule say he carnt research penalty takers....none ? Your obviously a poor German
@@christofbernhart503 that’s not cheating , that’s like saying the opposing manager can’t watch previous games for tactical reasons , what a stupid comment
LOL. Cheating. Whatever. It's called research.
BRAS LESTROIS DIRECT
Controlled Saka 😂lol
Swiss should of had a red card too
Yes penalties are total luck look at Italy in the last final v England.
Swiss > Dutch I feel
The actual game was boring as hell, it improved when England scored a goal.
The penalty shoot out was a master class by England who deserved to win.
Switzerland just played a ring fence around there goal to prevent England scoring a goal.
4/10 lackluster game
.
Switzerland is an underdog who nearly won, don’t expect them to try to dominate a game against a stacked England side
@@NickPhillips-yf2re Are they really an underdog if they've had a good team that's performed well in recent years? They went even with a struggling England so it's nothing special.
Yes they are a underdog ask any Swiss fan, their is confidence but the team is no comparison, the country has less people and less funding into football
@@NickPhillips-yf2re Yeh because funding wins you games. "Chelsea's 1 billion spending spree"
Ok so I say about funding, Bayern Munich, Man City, Real Madrid, psg all dominate their league. And we are talking about a country’s funding here into a particular sector, which is very important you are ignoring everything.
Swiss 🧀
Oo du kebabgrind gang bi certina go schaffe
ENGLAND WON BRILLIANTLY SWISS PLAYERS SHOULD HAVE BEEN SENT OFF CHEATERS
England dominated that game no doubt
Small price to pay to live in an objectively better country :)
😂
LOL. NURSE!? Maximum dose of copium, stat!
@@bobwilson2357 Hey I’m still sad ok 😂😂😂
Key word being objectively lol and to whom?😂
YOU HAVE TO FEEL FOR TÜRKEY FOR MAKING IT THIS FAR.🥺.
