Vintage Ampeg SVT: how does the preamp, the poweramp and the cabinet affect the sound

  • I tried to analyze where the magic of the Ampeg SVT comes from and is this something that can be judged on the level of headphones. And is this something that can be simulated by a pedal for instance.
    I recorded 6 channels simultaneously: a direct signal, the preamp of the SVT, the whole amp by using a speaker DI and with a close and a distance microphones. After this I bypassed the preamp of the SVT and later the poweramp as well to see the effect.
    I also purchased a Radial JDI and tried it as a speaker DI.

    Thank you, Jasper. This is brilliant. You cut through the hype and emphasize “can you hear the difference?”

    I just play through my 1998 SVT classics with 810s just re tubed it all new tung sol tubes and solvtex pre amp tubes no added pre amps or DI I love the playing straight through the SVT , I hope it will not give me any trouble in the future. Going to try using the new Ampeg heritage 410 leaving the 810 home. Have my hopes up. Thanks for the in-depth video

      That's a HLF version isn't it? I think that's a total different beast since it's ported (at least the bottom 2 speakers). Gives tons of lows (a bit too much for me!) but I know plenty of bassplayers totally happy with it.

    Well done. I use a PF 800 for everything now. It just works for me.

      Thanks! Yes my PF500 serves me well too, but I keep carrying the SVT around as long as I can!

    NIce work! Very thorough, straight to the point! I always here the same superlatives used, yet I can't find anyone that will explain what those flowery words mean. Either put it on a scope/analyze the sound/waveform with a frequency response measurement, or just use your ears.

    Te gekke vergelijking. Allereerst complimenten voor de mooie sound van je bassen. Die Precision in combinatie met de SVT klinkt echt te gek. Dankjewel voor deze goeie info!

    nothing can ever beat tubes. the svt is probably the best bass amp ever made tone wise but all my friends that owned it had many technical problems, if you buy an old one make sure to send it to a proper tech. you can also make the amp sound better using vintage tubes but to do it right will cost more than the amp.

      When I got it (25 years ago?) I had it totally serviced. After this I swapped the tubes once (with new Russian ones). Hardly any problems. Tons of gigs! It’s been super reliable.

      i think the mic recordings unveil the room's sound mostly, too. and the speakers' contribution i think might have been revealed a bit more woth the power amp cranked and the speakers making some xmax excursion, that's when they truly start adding colour (as opposed to solely changing the freq response)

    • @JasperMortier
      @JasperMortier  4 місяці тому +1

      Yes, I was not happy with the mic sound either. Normally I put the amp somewhere in the corner facing the wall, so you get way less reflections. And the room doesn't sound too good anyway! But that's what I've got to deal with. I'm not sure about the volume though. I pretty much record on the same level I use for gigs and louder is not per se better, especially for recording...@@raoulselten9480

    Love your energy dear Jasper, i get a ton of inspiration when i hit ya' great channel, The Ampeg SVT is nor so affordable for me but sounds awesome in many generes,.. your video makes me wanna experiment with what i got to create a SVT style of sound, i also like the Aucostic amps sound i think Jaco used that amp among others,..That Radial D.I sounded good but it is also expensive,..

      Thanks so much! Yes the SVTs come with a pricetag although especially the classics are often offered for ok prices, but still at least a 1000 bucks yes. So good to hear from you! Ciao. Jasper.

    I had the top and bottom and a nice P-Bass about 1978. Stand about 8 to 10 feet in front of it at 1/2 volume and you just needed to guide your left hand to play basic rock as the power rattled you to the bones. I was smart enough to wear shooting ear protection because without it i would be close to deaf. Once a monster, always a monster. Was about $400.00 to do the tubes back then. I can only imagine how much now.

    Might be just me but without the ultra low switch engaged the SVT sounds like a million other set ups that are good.

    • @JasperMortier
      @JasperMortier  4 місяці тому +2

      I never use the switch and still I think the SVT is not comparable to any other amp. 'Maybe' we have a different sound in our head!

    Great Video! Thanks for doing this! Does your cabinet have the original CTS 32 ohm speakers or the Eminence speakers?

    • @JasperMortier
      @JasperMortier  4 місяці тому

      Ha ha. You know my other videos do you? No the CTS speakers are stored in my basement. They sound killer but far too often the sound on stage is already boomy/muddy caused by bad acoustics or subwoofers etc. In that case I need more mids/cut-through character and the Eminence reissues do that better for me.

    I like the sound of the mic'd cab the best. The D.I. outs always sound really sterile to me.

    • @JasperMortier
      @JasperMortier  3 місяці тому +1

      Yes, you really have to work on the DI to get something worthwhile. Through a p.a. it's a different story though especially with all the disturbing acoustics involved. In that case a totally clean DI can really help to get a sound that's cuts through. Just a mike can get a bit blurry (totally depending on the situation though). Like I say in the video lately I'm using the Radial as a speaker DI and that's working pretty good!

    With respect, the SVT speaker cabinet is not a guitar cabinet. I have no idea what the speakers yiu are using - they are not the original SVT speakers.

    • @JasperMortier
      @JasperMortier  4 дні тому

      @@RogerCox-m2n Did I say it’s a guitar cab? Of course it’s designed to be a basscab yes. Maybe I meant the speakers they used in the beginning (late 60-ies) cause they didn’t really have powerful bassspeakers back then yet. Those early alnico’s do sound killer. I made another video you can look up, about the difference between those old CTS speakers and the Eminence Legend reissues I settled with. Those reissues have more power and are a bit tighter and midheavy. They work better for me in a lot of live situations with bad acoustics and/or boomy PA’s. In ideal acoustic circumstances the old alnico’s sound the best. My cabs are an exact replica of the old squareback 8x10 SVTcab only cut in half. See also that other video if you’re interested that is. Ciao!
