I was 24 when this movie was released. It wasn't just an incredibly successful movie, it was a cultural phenomenon. So much changed in the way of movie making after Star Wars.
I can't even imagine what that must have been like, to get to see Star Wars in THEATERS for the first time. I'm actually incredibly jealous, that must have been so much fun. I've heard that it was the original that basically created the idea of a movie being a cultural phenomenon. So awesome! Thanks for commenting and cheers!
@nickrb I am from a small town. We had maybe two, two screen theaters, and outside town a drive in. The movie ran for most of a year and was re-released shortly after it's initial run. I was four when it started. I saw it no mess than six times between the ages of four and eight. All in the theater or at drive-in. The kicker. There were only one or two copies in the tri-county area. However, you knew which theater had it playing. By the lines wrapping around buildings or blocks.
I’ve watched dozens of ANH first time reactions, and this is easily one of my favorites. Love all the production and movie-making comments. Good stuff.
10:52 Episode 3. Sheve Palpatine, Chancellor of the Galactic Republic, is voted emergency powers because of the rebellion, and, as his first act, reorganizes the Galactic Republic into the First Galactic Empire... That makes him Emperor...
You're right about Hidden Fortress. Lucas' first choice for Obi-Wan was Toshiro Mifune. Even the lightsaber battles are based pretty strongly on Kendi.
The easiest way to get an idea of how literally EVERYTHING changed in science fiction after this movie is to watch the last pre-SW sci-fi movie to make a big splash in 1976: Logan's Run. It's like watching something out of a time capsule -- NOTHING was the same from one movie to the other.
George Lucas literally hanged the face of cinema and movie theaters. I mean when you think of the way THX revolutionized sound in movie theaters? The man is a true genius and he doesn't get enough credit.
“I was not expecting this movie to be so powerful.” My dude, how do you think that 50 years later this film still holds such a loyal and devoted fan base?!
At one of the later screenings two of the model artists were coming out of the theater when they were approached by some kids for autographs. They said to the kids,, "You won't want our autographs. We're just the model artists," but the kids enthusiastically told them they did.
4:14 The walking Dubac and the shuttle taking off are SE additions. There was originally a shot of a Stormtrooper on a Dubac, but it was a static prop. Later the Sand People's Banthas are all practical effects (Elephants in costume).
This is why people went back to see it 3,4 5+ times. You get the journey on the first viewing but you had to go back to take in all the world building. That in itself drew people back to the sequels.
Dude I literally did a spit take when I read this. Ugh, I needed that. Thank you so much I wish I could like this comment five times. It was a long day of work and this really made me laugh. Cheers my friend!
1:30 "Is This The Sequel To ROGUE ONE" 🤣🤣 A New Hope came out almost 40 years before it but from your Chronological perspective you're correct... 7:53 Alec Guinness was our original Obi-Wan, and many Prequel scenes/quotes can be referenced back to the Original Trilogy... 10:48 you saw the Emperor at the end of the Prequels. He was the Supreme Chancellor that told the Senate he's turning the Republic into a new Galactic Empire... 23:58 Obi-Wan has become 'One with the Force'. Before Qui-Gon died he learned how to transfer his consciousness to the Force. He then taught Yoda who taught Obi-Wan at the end of the Prequels. FYI you're great at analysing the writing & film making so I'd like to see how you view the Sequels if you ever get to that divisive trilogy. Haha yeah the Rogue One thing was a joke. Alec Guinness is absolutely incredible isn't he? I envy anyone who got to see him as Obi Wan for the first time on the big screen back in 1977. Ah okay, yeah I think I remember the Emperor then, though honestly it's been almost two decades since I saw those movies in theaters, I barely remember them at this point. Thank you so much for the kind words and encouragement! I'll be sure to check out the channel you recommended, I cant wait to watch A New Hope in 4K, honestly I'd love to see it on the big screen someday. Cheers and thanks for the comment!
@@nickrb I just remembered you also did quality control for productions. Your skills were needed when they embarrassingly showed the title "ROUGE ONE" in theatres 🤦🏾♂️ Didn't realise it's been so long since watching the Prequels. I recommend revisiting it as a reaction. Ep III is my 2nd favourite Star Wars movie. Empire is most people's favourite so don't leave us hanging too long for that next reaction lol
In the opening sequence: 1) the models are all upside down 2) the camera is slowly panned front to back over the models. 3) the film was flipped and run backwards.
Dude fantastic reaction! One of the best I've ever seen. You obviously have a background in film and what you brought to the reaction with that was very unique and very interesting. I think you're going to go really far with this channel once enough people catch on. Subbed and best of luck!
This was one of the first movies to make large-scale use of motion control cameras, which could be programmed to follow exactly the same path through 3D space repeatedly. This allowed them to take multiple shots of different models and later combine them seamlessly. The trench run was a motion control camera being run repeatedly through a huge - a good proportion of a room - model of the trench.
7:36 in the original cut, a mirror was used to hide the wheels on the speeder, and an orange haze (dubbed the "Force Field"" by the VFX artists) was added in post. This was digitally removed in the SE.
YOU’VE NEVER SEEN THESE???!!? HOW DID I NOT KNOW THIS. Also you really should have reached out to me. Happy to share them! Also excellent reaction and commentary as always
Haha yeah I know bud, I know. They published the original theatrical releases in 4K? Maybe I'll order it before I watch the next one. Which edition do I buy?
@@nickrb They were never published beyond VHS releases because George Lucas wanted to erase them from existence so people would only ever be able to watch the special editions. I prefer the new "Final Cut" by David Kaylor. It's the best of both worlds making a 4K edition with limited amounts of the CGI e.g. no more Jabba in Ep4 & no more 'Noooo' in Ep6. His channel has the link to download them for free.

Absolutely can’t wait to see the reaction to the next two movies! The Original Trilogy really is a masterclass in cinema. There’s a reason the franchise has endured and been so popular. And yeah, why it’s caused a lot of fan division over the years with newer Star Wars movies. Ah. I feel comfortable not having to explain there was no cgi in these movies originally. There are some edits, though, such as “Han shooting first or Greedo”. You may also recognize the influence from Flash Gordon and Dune, Kurosawa, …
Yeah the non-CGI is one of the best aspects of the entire film honestly. I definitely recognized the Kurosawa influences, but didn't pick up on Dune or Flash Gordon, I'll have to check them out. Thanks!
I'n the prison scene, Harrison Ford thought the scene would be more natural if he ad-libbed his lines. That's why it looks like he didn't know what to say
its great. the movie was made in the same format as the old 1930's adventure serials like flash gordon. it moves fast and you are on the edge of your seat the whole way. of course the music is epic.
I have to go back and watch some more Flash Gordon, a few people have mentioned it as an influence for the film. I just love that it took an existing format, and folded it into an entirely new and fresh experience. This is seriously one of the best films ever made. Thanks for commenting, I really appreciate it! Cheers!
@@nickrb you were totally right. I think the guy who let the escape pod escape was probably force-choking death #1 and ended up on the cutting room floor.
G'day, I've watchem multiple reacters re view Star Wars, Watching you evaluate thes was great with your insights into movie structure. Your ability to recognise various referances and then show where they get used is way beyond ouher reactors.
Oh you’re gonna loooove empire! Might hurt a bit after Sw’s though…. Saw Sw’s at the theatre in 78 (NZ release) and it was a phenomenon everyone was crazy for it, it was mind blowing for a 7 yr old kid. We had all the story records, books and of course action figures etc. yep it was world changing.
I have a feeling Empire is going to be a lot of fun, everyone is telling me it's the best one in the original Star Wars trilogy, but I'll be honest, it's going to be really hard to beat a New Hope! Cheers and thanks for the comment!
18:15 This was early in Harrison Ford's career, but he had more experience than Mark Hamill or Carrie Fisher. Harrison forgot his lines, but ad lobed the whole conversation, and George Lucas let it ride.
Depends on which the various edits you watch. 2004 DVD it's nearly simultaneous. 2011 BD they tweaked it more. 2019 D+ tweaked again and added new dialog.
@SpidermanandhisAmazingFriends Anyone who introduces someone new to Star Wars, and doesn’t show them the original trilogy first, is doing it wrong. Period.
I have the "Despecialized" versions of the original trilogy. They are fan-edits where the blu ray official releases have the special edition stuff removed, and the film and sound quality remastered for hi-res digital media. They should never have messed around and updated anything with these movies.
11:40 Technically Luke's "uncle" and "aunt" are not blood. The uncle, Owen Lars, is the little brother of a man Luke's grandma married just before her death. The Lars are not a blood relation. They just adopted him as the closest thing to relatives he has on the planet.
They're not blood, but Owen was the son (probably from a prior marriage) of the man Luke's grandma married. He's introduced as Anakin's stepbrother in Attack of the Clones.
The set backgrounds, the story lines and the real appearance of the spaceships was something very new when this film came out. Most scifi films before and the many trying to cash in on the Star Wars films success after were of poor quality.
Actually the bombing scene is stolen from the true life story of the The Dam Busters raid (Operation Chastise) carried out by the RAF in WW2...There is a movie based on it made in 1955...I believe Lucas said this is where he got his inspiration.
Great reaction and analysis. I like that you laughed at droids crossing the corridor through a barrage of laser bolts. That always got a big laugh from audiences back in it's initial theatrical release but I hardly ever see any think its funny at all. The movie is full of little jokes that fly right over people's heads today. Like, "We dont serve their kind in here," from a bigoted bartender in a bar full of every race you can imagine. The dog fight at the end is an interesting bit of story telling. The entire scene is told strictly from the dialogue of the pilot's radio communication. And none of that is superfluous dialogue. No jokes or wise cracks, "Cut the chatter Red Two!". Every word spoken is authentic combat radio coms. That doesn't exist in any of the other movies, especially the prequels, where all they do is crack jokes and feed us clunky exposition. Aside from a few bits of dialogue from the Empire, that whole scene is just "Stay on target!" Miss that.
Thanks so much for the kind words! Yeah the droids crossing the hallway was great, such a simple, comic moment. It made me think of old Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd films from the 1920s, just a simple way to escape from the problem - run through it! Ah yeah, I had a feeling about that bartender when I watched it, wasn't sure if it was meant to be commentary or not but that makes sense. That's a really interesting note about the dogfight, I hadn't considered that but you're right. That really does make the scene kind of unique, I can't really think of any other place they do that. Cheers and thanks for the comment!
20:37 This duel between OWK and DV is a bit underwhelming for anyone who has seen other Lightsaber fights. Obviously, they were limited in what Sir Alec Guinness could do physically. this is 19 years after the events of (the prequel) episode III, the ancient galactic republic together with galactic liberty has fallen!! as result of the Clone Wars, and what emerges from its ashes to replace it is a new galactic political super-power which has consolidated the remaining supporting star systems (political bodies) into unified Empire, controlled by the most ancient evil (thought extinct) - the Sith, unbeknownst .. all other star systems which fell away are sympathetic & loyal to foundations of a free republic and its ancient protectors (the Jedi) which have all but been exterminated, closely untaken by the emperors most loyal servant Darth Vader, .. this story begins with the empire in hot pursuit of rebel spies who managed to steal the plans for the most powerful weapon “The Death Star (planet killer) as the movie unfolds it explains that the only chance to restore freedom lies within the bloodline of the Skywalker family who are literally … the last Hope ..
I agree with that, I was just pointing out why, from a storytelling perspective, it's wrong for Han to shoot second.. It gets to the heart of the function Han's character plays in the film. He's what's called a counter-balance. Having established how vulnerable Luke and Obi-Wan are, and how dangerous the world and the Empire are, the function of Han's character is to level the playing field if/when the time comes, and you illustrate his ability to do that by demonstrating that he's willing to play rough and he anticipates problems and eliminates them while they're still on the horizon. Hence, Han should shoot first.
I know, I know. I get this a lot. Honestly I just wasn't that interested in the original trilogy when I was growing up. Bu I'm so glad I'm watching it now!
While this is a good time I really can’t get onboard that you’ve never watched these. You are trying to say you grew up on prequels etc and are a film student/nerd who has lived long enough to have silver hair BUT you never found the time to watch Star Wars? You can recite lines from the prequels and even get the 1138 Lucas connection but *shrug* never ever had a late night or a friend sofa night where you mentioned not watching Star Wars and it wasn’t immediately cued up with popcorn? I’m happy to watch - I just need a more believable understanding of why you ACTIVELY avoided this trilogy which you would have to have done - or more honestly about why you felt the need to be dishonest. Like it just took me out of being able to actually enjoy your commentary fully because it felt weird you wanted us to buy the surprised pikachu face. Star Wars? I never heard of her.
Hey bud, I'm sorry to hear you feel that way, but honestly I was just not that interested in the original Star Wars growing up. I was more into Hitchcock, Kubrick, Samuel Fuller, Buster Keaton, Mira Nair, filmmakers like that. My favorite films were movies like Benny and Joon, The Sandlot, The Client, Raise the Red Lantern, Ma Vie En Rose, Hitchcock's "Rope", etc. I wasn't that into mainstream movies until more recently. I think that's because I can't enjoy a movie when everyone is constantly telling me how great it is, because then I'm just evaluating when I watch it, rather than getting into it and enjoying it. So yeah, the original Star Wars, the Back to the Future films, some of the Indiana Jones movies, I going through them now and watching them because I have enough distance to really enjoy them. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to comment and share your thoughts - cheers and I hope you continue to watch and engage!

its great. the movie was made in the same format as the old 1930's adventure serials like flash gordon. it moves fast and you are on the edge of your seat the whole way. of course the music is epic.
This is the most intelligent reaction video to this movie I have ever seen.
G'day, I've watchem multiple reacters re view Star Wars, Watching you evaluate thes was great with your insights into movie structure. Your ability to recognise various referances and then show where they get used is way beyond ouher reactors.
Lucas was also influenced by Joseph Campbell.
Interesting, I didn't think of that but this story does follow the heroes journey.
@@nickrb well, be prepared to see the best of all the films! A change in tone, and maybe for some shocking surprises….
I'm very much looking forward to your review of Empire!
18:15 This was early in Harrison Ford's career, but he had more experience than Mark Hamill or Carrie Fisher. Harrison forgot his lines, but ad lobed the whole conversation, and George Lucas let it ride.
1:50 Stormtroopers don't have bad aim, but main characters do have plot armor! No-name troopers cannot hurt main characters!
They were allowed to escape so Tarkin could track them to their base.
Yeah, I am with you. I like Han shooting first, I really wish they hadn't changed it.
It's such an odd thing to want to change. Given his character's function in the movie, it seems only logical that Han should shoot first.
Depends on which the various edits you watch.
2004 DVD it's nearly simultaneous.
2011 BD they tweaked it more.
2019 D+ tweaked again and added new dialog.
this was wonderful to watch your first viewing... i am in an about 6k
Excellent reaction. Very intelligent commentary !
Hey thanks! I really appreciate the kind words!
George Lucas was influenced by Kurisawa. There are similarities to THE HIDDEN FORTRESS.
Yeah The Hidden Fortress seems to be the main influence here. Great movie. If you're going to borrow, borrow from the best!
How the hell could you watch EVERY OTHER Star Wars movie without watching the ORIGINAL movies???
Cause the original trilogy isn't the event of their generation. Franky, I love seeing the difference in perspective
@SpidermanandhisAmazingFriends Anyone who introduces someone new to Star Wars, and doesn’t show them the original trilogy first, is doing it wrong. Period.

Dude, take it easy 😂🤣
George Lucas showed his technicians at ILM films of World War II dogfights at a guideline for the action sequences.
Makes complete sense.
The set backgrounds, the story lines and the real appearance of the spaceships was something very new when this film came out. Most scifi films before and the many trying to cash in on the Star Wars films success after were of poor quality.
The movie is absolutely magic. I cannot believe it didn't win Best Picture that year.
q2:23 These 2 have a cameo in Rogue One. If you see that first, it's a blink-and-you-miss-it moment.
21:39 The cockpit of the MF is patterned after the cockpit of a B 29 Super Fortress one of the largest bombers of WWII.
If you think THIS movie is exciting, I can barely contain myself waiting for you to see the next two.
I'm literally setting up to watch Empire as we speak. Word on the street is it's the best one. We shall see, it's a tall bar to meet.
2:40 if they had shot the escape pod they would never have found the plans.
5:32 NOBODY knows the relationship here yet either... (and wont until episode 6)
Actually the bombing scene is stolen from the true life story of the The Dam Busters raid (Operation Chastise) carried out by the RAF in WW2...There is a movie based on it made in 1955...I believe Lucas said this is where he got his inspiration.
13:17 This scene has been reworked so many times, it's ridiculous. It should never have been altered. Han shoots Greedo. Greedo never shoots at all.
Aside from a few bits of dialogue from the Empire, that whole scene is just "Stay on target!"
Miss that.
Seen all the films except the originals ?? OK.
I know, it's lame. But I'm catching up! Cheers!
20:37 This duel between OWK and DV is a bit underwhelming for anyone who has seen other Lightsaber fights. Obviously, they were limited in what Sir Alec Guinness could do physically. Someone has made a fan remake of this scene (Scene 38) that is worth a watch. Scene 38 Reimagined ua-cam.com/video/to2SMng4u1k/v-deo.html
I believe im 421
Haha we're all a little TK-421
At the time, this saga was a dream.
Now she makes you laugh.
Yeah I can't imagine what it must have been like to get to see these movies in theaters when they were released. Thanks for commenting! Cheers!
12:51 It's not a Starwars Movie until someone looses a hand or arm.
You should check out Gattaca if yiu haven't seen it.
Never seen Gattaca! I'll check it out! (You're talking about the original, the remake? Both?)
@@nickrb - 1997 with Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman. I don't think there's a remake of it.
I'm excited about this. Your reaction to Star Wars was one of the better reactions I've seen - such great insights. I think your channel will do very well if you continue to do this. Your presentation, knowledge, etc. is top notch. Good luck!

Haha cheers! Thanks bud
Well, rather than "a sequel to Rogue One" I prefer to see it as a sequel to Empire at War.
if you're impressed with this movie you might want to check out STAR TREK TOS.
I just put it in the queue! Thanks for the rec!
Were those really Gaffers running across the scene, or was that sarcasm? 😭
there are more cultural references to this movie in society than there are to the bible.
this is 19 years after the events of (the prequel) episode III, the ancient galactic republic together with galactic liberty has fallen!! as result of the Clone Wars, and what emerges from its ashes to replace it is a new galactic political super-power which has consolidated the remaining supporting star systems (political bodies) into unified Empire, controlled by the most ancient evil (thought extinct) - the Sith, unbeknownst .. all other star systems which fell away are sympathetic & loyal to foundations of a free republic and its ancient protectors (the Jedi) which have all but been exterminated, closely untaken by the emperors most loyal servant Darth Vader, ..
this story begins with the empire in hot pursuit of rebel spies who managed to steal the plans for the most powerful weapon “The Death Star (planet killer) as the movie unfolds it explains that the only chance to restore freedom lies within the bloodline of the Skywalker family who are literally … the last Hope ..
No, Han shoots first because a deadly weapon is being trained on him, and his adversary talks too much…
I agree with that, I was just pointing out why, from a storytelling perspective, it's wrong for Han to shoot second..
How have you not seen the original star wars? You have a lot of grey hair. Where have you been all your life?
Need to improve on your fake-reactions. Stick to the day job!
"No. I don't want to do any of that." - Michael Scott.
Are you thinking that this movie has been around so long and is so iconic that he MUST HAVE seen it, and he's just faking it? Nevertheless, he's the most intellectual and eloquent analyzers of films who should have millions of subscribers by now. UA-cam is obviously suppressing him.
